The Chevrolet HHR (an initialism for Heritage High Roof) is a retro-styled, high-roofed, five-door, five-passenger, front-wheel drive wagon designed by Bryan Nesbitt and launched by the American automaker Chevrolet at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show as a 2006 model.
The HHR shares the GM Delta platform with the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Saturn Ion. Chevrolet also marketed a panel van variant of the HHR beginning in 2007. Assembled in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and marketed throughout North America, production of the HHR ended in May 2011. The HHR was replaced in the U.S. by the Chevrolet Captiva Sport. This was a rebadged version of the Opel Antara. However, the Captiva Sport was only available as a fleet vehicle and was not available new to the general public.
Design
The vehicle's design was inspired by the late-1940s/early 1950s Chevrolet cars and trucks, specifically the 1947 Chevrolet Suburban and Advance Design pickups, with large, square fender flares and a hemispherical grille. The design of the HHR has been credited to Bryan Nesbitt who was a former designer at Chrysler where he was the lead designer of the Chrysler PT Cruiser. Nesbitt was recruited by GM to join its design staff and served for a time as the chief designer of the Chevrolet brand. The HHR had a cargo-carrying capacity of 62.7 cubic feet (1.78 m3). All models had a flat-load floor (passenger models have 60/40 split bench) and fold-flat front passenger seat. For the 2007 model year, it was available in four trim levels; LS, LT, 2LT, and Special Edition. A panel van variant was also made available in 2007 for only the LT trim and became available on all trim levels in 2008. A "Half Panel" (RPO code AA5) rear quarter window delete option was available in the 2008 to 2010 model years.

- Summary: last week we noticed gasoline showing up on the ground in front of the rear driver side tire. I looked underneath and found a pipe that seems to be corroded. I looked online and found that many people have the same problem, so I haven't had it checked at a dealership. - Summary: Although this vehicle is a 2010 HHR, it has less than 23000 miles on it, has been garaged kept and maintained impeccably. The warning light blinks at random and then the power steering fails. It does not matter the speed of the vehicle and happens at random. Once turned off and restarted, the power steering works for approx 5 minutes and then fails again. There was a recall on 2009-2010 HHRs for sudden loss of power steering issued in 3/2014, recall # 14V153000. This recall is not VIN# specific. However, when I contact the dealer for repair of this vehicle, I am told that the recall does not pertain to my VIN#, so its not covered. NHTSA has more than 135 complaints about HHRs since 10/2019 with more than half of them being steering issues. This clearly is a wider recall issue than originally thought. My vehicle is inoperable due to this safety issue. I filed a complaint with GM. They told me it was not their issue and I could pay to have it diagnosed and fixed at a dealership. This is a GM issue due to the amount of complaints about this exact problem from other owners. I am hoping GM is made aware of the widespread issues and does the right thing, issuing another recall for all 2009-2010 HHRs regardless of VIN#.

- Summary: The (EPS) system in my 2006 Chevy HHR has experienced multiple malfunctions. The power steering suddenly cuts out without warning while driving at both low and high speeds, making it extremely difficult to steer, especially when attempting to turn or change lanes. This failure happens intermittently, and the EPS motor is suspected to be the root cause. I have replaced fuses and relays, but the issue persists. This system is available for inspection upon request. This malfunction poses a severe risk to my safety and the safety of others. When the power steering fails, it becomes nearly impossible to turn the vehicle, which is especially hazardous during routine maneuvers such as lane changes or turns at intersections. The sudden loss of steering capability, especially at higher speeds, has left me vulnerable to potential collisions. Given the unpredictability of the issue, it could easily lead to a fatal accident if it occurs while navigating tight curves or avoiding road hazards. The problem has been confirmed by a certified mechanic, who validated that the power steering system is malfunctioning and recognized the danger it poses. The mechanic advised that this issue is prevalent in vehicles of this make and model & suggested filing a formal complaint to prompt further investigation by the manufacturer. To date, the veh has been thoroughly examined by an independent service center. They confirmed the malfunction of the EPS system but were unable to fully resolve the issue through standard repairs like fuse or relay replacements. A "Power Steering" message illuminates on the dashboard. A few seconds later, the power steering system fails completely, leaving the vehicle almost impossible to control. These warnings have been intermittent, but their frequency has increased over time. The first occurrence was about a year ago, Given the ongoing danger and prevalence of this issue among other 2006 Chevy HHR owners, I am requesting that GM initiate a formal recall.

This is a severe safety concern of ignition/explosion due to a fuel leak; risk of property damage or even death. This problem has not been addressed yet to a dealer or local mechanic as of yet . Failed component has not yet been inspected by GM, Police or insurance. No warning lamps or messages were illuminated on dashboard, prior to failure, vehicle did have some difficulty starting, possibly due to this problem, but it did start.

My repair quote is about $500 to get the line replaced entirely.

Vehicle year: 2007
Looking for a used car for my business, I stumbled across my HHR on another car finding website. I was specifically looking for a car with a moonroof and Bluetooth, and my car had both at a ridiculously low price compared to others on the site. I went to the VW dealer that had the car and bought it after they took another grand off because the website price was wrong. No joke! That was 2 years and 49,000 miles ago, and since then, the car has needed nothing other than standard maintenance. I bought it with 85,000 miles and was really worried about the 100,000 G.M. fall-aparts. However, I'm at 134,000 miles now, and apart from oil changes, a set of tires, and one visit to the dealer for the ignition recall, nothing has broken or gone wonky. The only thing I see as kind of a negative is that although it gets within its EPA gas mileage ratings, I feel that gas mileage could be better. I get a consistent 24 mpg all-around but feel it should do better. All in all, it's a great little car, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

It's especially great for our furry friends - we have two rescued greyhounds and they fit perfectly with the back seats down. I bought this car brand new from a dealer in my hometown back in 2007-2008! Even after 10 years, it still manages to get an impressive 29 miles to the gallon on the highway and about 26 miles in the city. With 120,000 miles on it, it still runs like a champion. I must admit, being a small person, the interior works perfectly for me, but it may not be as comfortable for taller individuals. I can't see any reason why I wouldn't keep this car for many more years, as it still runs like it's brand new! If you're in the market for a good used vehicle that has been well cared for like mine, I highly recommend this car. It has always slept in a garage at night!

Hey there! If you're considering the HHR, don't let the negative reviews fool you. I think some people just had a bad experience and felt the need to share it. Personally, I've had a great time with my 2010 Chevy HHR LT 2.4L. I got it for an amazing deal at $11,500 with only 35k miles on it, and even got a 1 year 100k warranty. It was my first new-ish car and it felt like a dream after driving an old Chevy Celebrity for so long. Of course, there are some downsides. The blindspots are pretty big, but I just added some circular mirrors to my side-view mirrors and it's been a big help. The front view is also a bit small and square, but I'm a small person so it doesn't bother me too much. One thing I do wish it had was a USB port for my iPhone, but the auxiliary port works just fine. The gas mileage isn't the best, but it's not terrible either. I get 22/30 MPG, which isn't as good as some newer models, but it's still decent. The acceleration could be better too, but it's only a 4cyl 2.4L engine so that's to be expected. Overall, I've had a great experience with my HHR and it's been easy to keep up with maintenance at home. Hope this helps!I love my HHR! I've done a lot of maintenance on it myself, like changing the brake pads and oil, and even putting new rotors on at 50k. As a small lady, I'm proud to say that it was a snap. Plus, parts are very affordable. I've put a lot of miles on this car, but it still runs like a dream after three years and 85k miles. I've taken it on many long trips, including to Florida and back, and it's been great for moving too. I can comfortably pack all of my furniture and make one, maybe two trips without needing a UHaul. It's also the most comfortable car for group road trips with 4 or 5 people. In the winter, it's like driving Santa's flying sleigh through the snow. I can't think of anything I genuinely dislike about this car. Proper maintenance is key, and with it, my car runs so quietly that I can't even tell if it's on sometimes. My brother also owns an HHR from 2008, and it still runs great at 130k miles. He did have to replace the suspension, but it was only $650. The only odd thing about his car is that the window buttons are on the center console, but mine is normal. Overall, the HHR is a great little easy-keeper car with so much utility. I plan on driving mine until it can't run anymore!

I too had a problem with standing water in the floorboards, but it was an easy fix. The sunroof has two drain tubes that run down through the door post. We blew these hoses out, and they were full of nasty black debris. Once they were cleared out, I haven't had a single problem with water again. I'm thrilled with my car! It gets great gas mileage and performs great. I'm so happy we figured out the problem.

After owning this car for nearly two years, I experienced engine failure due to a faulty oil return. Despite my attempts to contact Chevy, they did not provide any assistance. While the exterior design was appealing, the interior lacked certain features that I desired. The stereo was subpar and the speakers were only satisfactory. Additionally, the ride height was unsuitable for areas with heavy snowfall, making winter travel a nerve-wracking experience as the HHR would often slide and lose control. Even adding a 50lb bag of sand to the back did not improve the situation. Although headroom was adequate, leg and shoulder room were somewhat cramped. The vehicle's steering response was decent, and the braking was acceptable, but not exceptional. At speeds of 75mph, the engine seemed to be overworked. However, I must admit that the HHR's gas mileage was impressive. Overall, while the HHR may be a decent car for short commutes with minimal highway driving, I would not recommend it for longer journeys or areas with harsh winter conditions.

I purchased my 2009 HHr in April 2010 and unfortunately, it has had more problems than all of my previous cars combined over the past 40 years. Shortly after purchasing the car, the power windows on the passenger side stopped working and I also noticed that the front and rear floors on the driver's side were wet. This caused the wires to corrode and eventually led to the ecm malfunctioning, which in turn caused the windows to lose power. Thankfully, the dealer fixed this issue under good will. However, I later had to return to the dealer to fix another short circuit and then again when the key would not come out of the ignition. The dealer replaced the shifter and ignition switch, which finally resolved the issue. Since then, I have had to replace the battery and front brakes, but now everything is working well.

I initially had a high opinion of this car, but after owning it for 15 months, I have encountered some issues. Unfortunately, the build quality of this vehicle is not up to par. As a loyal buyer of domestic cars, I have purchased two GM vehicles in the past (both 2006 models), but unfortunately, they have not met my expectations. The HHR has required several repairs, including front brake rotors, electrical issues, wiper problems, injector replacement, and pulling, among others. Additionally, the metal is quite thin and prone to dents. However, when the check engine light is not on (which is about 50% of the time), it is a fun car to drive. I must say that my dealership has been very helpful, but I do wish that the engineers who designed this car had done a better job.

You special ordered it brand new and even put an exterior woodgrain trim kit on it. 'Lil Woody' was your go-to for riding around town and on road trips. Although things started falling apart at 40k, you always drove it easy and kept it in the garage at night. You had to replace some parts like the shocks/struts, ignition switch, and front wheel hubs, but you took care of it. You even replaced the lower control arms, electric power steering motor, engine compartment fuse/relay box, AC freon charge valve, AC condenser, and painted wheel covers. Despite the check engine light staying on chronically, you still loved your car. Unfortunately, the engine quit running on the freeway and you had to tow it to the mechanic. Although the mechanic couldn't find anything to fix, you couldn't have a car that may randomly just stop running. After 15 years and 96,000 miles, it was time to say goodbye. The dealer only offered you $1,000 as a trade-in, but you know you deserved better. Your previous car, a 1987 Cavalier Z24, gave you 20 years and 201,000 miles with very little trouble. Here's hoping your new(er) Ford Edge will deliver! We'll see.

I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to share my experience with my HHR LS that I purchased in 2007. After driving around 36,000 miles, I started to hear a rattling sound coming from the front end of the car. I became concerned and decided to take my car to a GM authorized service center. After speaking with the service representative, I learned that this is a common issue with the HHR. However, I was pleased to find out that both struts, the steering column shaft, and sway bars were covered under warranty and the GM service team was very helpful throughout the process. If you own a '07 or '08 HHR, it may be worth keeping an eye out for these issues. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!
