Chevrolet Hhr problems

The Chevrolet HHR (an initialism for Heritage High Roof) is a retro-styled, high-roofed, five-door, five-passenger, front-wheel drive wagon designed by Bryan Nesbitt and launched by the American automaker Chevrolet at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show as a 2006 model.

The HHR shares the GM Delta platform with the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Saturn Ion. Chevrolet also marketed a panel van variant of the HHR beginning in 2007. Assembled in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and marketed throughout North America, production of the HHR ended in May 2011. The HHR was replaced in the U.S. by the Chevrolet Captiva Sport. This was a rebadged version of the Opel Antara. However, the Captiva Sport was only available as a fleet vehicle and was not available new to the general public.

Design

The vehicle's design was inspired by the late-1940s/early 1950s Chevrolet cars and trucks, specifically the 1947 Chevrolet Suburban and Advance Design pickups, with large, square fender flares and a hemispherical grille. The design of the HHR has been credited to Bryan Nesbitt who was a former designer at Chrysler where he was the lead designer of the Chrysler PT Cruiser. Nesbitt was recruited by GM to join its design staff and served for a time as the chief designer of the Chevrolet brand. The HHR had a cargo-carrying capacity of 62.7 cubic feet (1.78 m3). All models had a flat-load floor (passenger models have 60/40 split bench) and fold-flat front passenger seat. For the 2007 model year, it was available in four trim levels; LS, LT, 2LT, and Special Edition. A panel van variant was also made available in 2007 for only the LT trim and became available on all trim levels in 2008. A "Half Panel" (RPO code AA5) rear quarter window delete option was available in the 2008 to 2010 model years.

Common Chevrolet Hhr problems

The Chevrolet HHR, a compact station wagon, has been known for its unique design and reliability. However, like any vehicle, it can experience common problems that may affect its drivability and quality. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on car owner complaints:

  1. Check Engine Light Due to Gas Cap Issue: This issue has been reported by 99 people, making it the most common problem. The check engine light may illuminate due to a loose or worn-out gas cap, which can cause harmful vapor to be released into the air and force the owner to spend more on fuel.
  2. Poor Engine Performance: Some owners of the 2011 Chevrolet HHR have reported excessive vibration, lurching forward, and a drop in RPMs. This could be caused by a clogged or dirty air filter, damaged intake hoses, faulty fuel pumps or injectors, or damaged sensors. If you experience these symptoms, it is recommended to have your vehicle checked by a licensed mechanic for a proper diagnosis.
  3. Power Steering Shutdowns: The 2008 Chevrolet HHR has been reported to have power steering shuts down, with an average cost to fix of $500 and an average mileage of 88,000 mi.
  4. Accessories - Interior Problems: The worst problem category for the Chevrolet HHR is accessories - interior problems, which can include malfunctioning power windows, radio issues, and broken dashboard gauges.
  5. Transmission Issues: Some owners have reported transmission problems, such as slipping, jerking, and difficulty shifting.
  6. Air Conditioning Failure: The air conditioning system may fail, causing discomfort during hot weather and potentially leading to overheating issues.
  7. Battery Failure: Some owners have reported issues with the battery, such as difficulty starting the car or complete battery failure.
  8. Steering Wheel Problems: Issues with the steering wheel, such as shaking or difficulty turning, have been reported.
  9. Electrical System Problems: Various electrical system problems, such as malfunctioning dashboard indicators, have been reported.

While the Chevrolet HHR has a reputation for reliability, it is important to be aware of these common issues and address them promptly to maintain the vehicle's quality and drivability.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-18
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 3GCCA85B79S
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: last week we noticed gasoline showing up on the ground in front of the rear driver side tire. I looked underneath and found a pipe that seems to be corroded. I looked online and found that many people have the same problem, so I haven't had it checked at a dealership. The pipe continues to leak after you walk away and I'm afraid someone will discard a cigarette near the vehicle, or worse. We are generally home, and can be reached for inspection.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-12
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-04
  • VIN: 3GNBACDV3AS
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Although this vehicle is a 2010 HHR, it has less than 23000 miles on it, has been garaged kept and maintained impeccably. The warning light blinks at random and then the power steering fails. It does not matter the speed of the vehicle and happens at random. Once turned off and restarted, the power steering works for approx 5 minutes and then fails again. There was a recall on 2009-2010 HHRs for sudden loss of power steering issued in 3/2014, recall # 14V153000. This recall is not VIN# specific. However, when I contact the dealer for repair of this vehicle, I am told that the recall does not pertain to my VIN#, so its not covered. NHTSA has more than 135 complaints about HHRs since 10/2019 with more than half of them being steering issues. This clearly is a wider recall issue than originally thought. My vehicle is inoperable due to this safety issue. I filed a complaint with GM. They told me it was not their issue and I could pay to have it diagnosed and fixed at a dealership. This is a GM issue due to the amount of complaints about this exact problem from other owners. I am hoping GM is made aware of the widespread issues and does the right thing, issuing another recall for all 2009-2010 HHRs regardless of VIN#.
Chevrolet Hhr 2006
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-10
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-12
  • VIN: 3GNDA13D16S
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The (EPS) system in my 2006 Chevy HHR has experienced multiple malfunctions. The power steering suddenly cuts out without warning while driving at both low and high speeds, making it extremely difficult to steer, especially when attempting to turn or change lanes. This failure happens intermittently, and the EPS motor is suspected to be the root cause. I have replaced fuses and relays, but the issue persists. This system is available for inspection upon request. This malfunction poses a severe risk to my safety and the safety of others. When the power steering fails, it becomes nearly impossible to turn the vehicle, which is especially hazardous during routine maneuvers such as lane changes or turns at intersections. The sudden loss of steering capability, especially at higher speeds, has left me vulnerable to potential collisions. Given the unpredictability of the issue, it could easily lead to a fatal accident if it occurs while navigating tight curves or avoiding road hazards. The problem has been confirmed by a certified mechanic, who validated that the power steering system is malfunctioning and recognized the danger it poses. The mechanic advised that this issue is prevalent in vehicles of this make and model & suggested filing a formal complaint to prompt further investigation by the manufacturer. To date, the veh has been thoroughly examined by an independent service center. They confirmed the malfunction of the EPS system but were unable to fully resolve the issue through standard repairs like fuse or relay replacements. A "Power Steering" message illuminates on the dashboard. A few seconds later, the power steering system fails completely, leaving the vehicle almost impossible to control. These warnings have been intermittent, but their frequency has increased over time. The first occurrence was about a year ago, Given the ongoing danger and prevalence of this issue among other 2006 Chevy HHR owners, I am requesting that GM initiate a formal recall.

Latest negative Chevrolet Hhr car reviews

  1. Jo Heidenreich 2025-07-08

    Vehicle year: 2008

Hi there! I noticed a few issues with my car that I wanted to share. Firstly, I've had some trouble with the rotors getting warped and have had to replace them several times. Additionally, the right rear passenger window motor has gone out and the tire pressure gauges no longer work. While the rear seat has gotten a bit cramped since my kids have grown up, I must say that the gas mileage is great! I've driven 147,000 miles and have had no engine problems. The only minor inconvenience is that I sometimes have to lean forward to see the traffic light when I'm first in line. Thanks for listening!

  2. Mackenzie Yundt 2025-07-04

    Vehicle year: 2006

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share a recent experience I had with my car. I usually take it to Midway Chevrolet for servicing and have never had any issues until recently. While driving, I noticed a 'clunk' sound when I shifted into overdrive and lost power. Even though no warning lights came on, the car continued to make strange noises and eventually broke down. I had to take it to a GMC dealer and found out that the engine had seized and all the oil was gone. I was surprised because the car only had 141,350 miles on it and I thought it would last longer. I'm getting a used engine put in, but I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience? Thanks for your help!

  3. Linwood Cole 2025-07-03

    Vehicle year: 2008

When your car reaches 100,000 miles, it may start to require more maintenance. In this case, it seems like there were a few issues that needed attention, such as a new transmission and starter, as well as problems with the door locks and engine. We have an HHR LT with the 2.4L Ecotec FlexFuel engine and automatic transmission. It drives great and has plenty of pick-up. However, we have noticed that the engine does not perform well with the Ethanol gas we are required to use. To improve gas mileage, we have found that adding Lucas fuel additive every time we fill up is necessary, which can be a bit of a hassle. Additionally, the interior has a few blind spots that require extra caution, especially for shorter drivers. Despite these minor issues, the car is comfortable to sit in and the power driver seat works well. The round air vents are a nice touch and there are ample cup holders, which is a great feature compared to many more expensive cars.

The vehicle has an attractive and urban design, making it a great alternative to the PT Cruiser. It's fun to drive when it's not in the garage and has great fuel mileage on long hauls. I often take 1300 mile trips and only use 3 tanks of gas for the whole trip. However, when it comes to reliability and performance, it's a different story. I purchase new vehicles often, about every 2-3 years, and unfortunately, this will probably be my last Chevrolet purchase. Although Chevrolet customer service is great, if they can't build a reliable car, then it's not for me. I would recommend Toyota, Honda, or Saturn instead.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that this HHR SS AA5 (1/2 Panel) is a real gem! It's one of only 199 made in 2009 and has all the GM Performance equipment available, including a 5-speed manual transmission. Even better, it's in show car quality condition with only 46,000 original miles. Thanks for considering this amazing vehicle!

I went to Texas with my son three years ago, but Edmonds keeps asking me and I cannot cancel my account. I loved this reliable vehicle so much that I gave it to my son when he immigrated to Dallas, Texas from New York City in February 2021. It has been a great little truck, with no problems on the 1600-mile journey (then 126,000 miles)! It can hold so much and gets 30mpg on my highway trips between NYC and Kingston, NY. Maintenance costs are low, and I go to the dealer for main checkups and Monro and Mavis in between. The only complaints are rust at the bottom of the doors inside, and rotors and wheel bearings wearing out every 35,000 miles, although this is no longer an issue now that I'm over 100k+ high mileage. I can't figure out how to remove water stains on the upholstery, but I use sheepskin covers up front and a blanket in the back. There's a rattle to the left of the driver's dashboard that's been there since 11k miles, only on gravel roads, but I still love the truck in September 2020. This little truck was first owned by my wife's father (11,000 miles), then us until 126,000 miles, and now my son wants to keep it for another 100,000. He's going to give it a special paint job to dress it up! I miss it! He just did that fancy paint job, new custom grill, new wheel covers, custom front and back bumpers... Wow!

I have the 2lt 2.4 auto and it's a great car. I traded in my 4 door Ram Hemi and have no regrets. The mileage is great, averaging 22 on e85 and 30 mpg on regular. I've even gotten an average of 32 mpg at 75 mph with the a/c on. There's lots of room for 4 people and luggage, and it can even pull a small trailer for a dirt bike or lawn mower. It's fun to drive and oil changes are a breeze. Although it's made with cheaper quality materials and lots of plastic, I paid only $18,000 on a $24,000 sticker so I can't complain. It's a good-looking little gas saver with lots of room. I chose this over the Kia Soul due to its room and mileage.

I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to reach out and share my experience with the 2006 HR. I've been driving it for the past three years and overall, it's been a great ride. However, I have noticed some leaking on the driver's side floor after heavy rains. I was wondering if you or anyone you know has experienced this issue as well? Thank you for your time and help!

I really like this car, although I must admit that I loved my PT Cruiser even more. The PT Cruiser had more cargo room and fewer blind spots, so I felt more confident driving it. However, the reliability of this car is excellent, and I have had fewer issues with it than with my PT Cruiser. Repair costs are about the same, and I get 26 mpg, which is much better than the 18 mpg I got with the PT Cruiser.
