2010 Chevrolet Hhr problems

The Chevrolet HHR (an initialism for Heritage High Roof) is a retro-styled, high-roofed, five-door, five-passenger, front-wheel drive wagon designed by Bryan Nesbitt and launched by the American automaker Chevrolet at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show as a 2006 model.

The HHR shares the GM Delta platform with the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Saturn Ion. Chevrolet also marketed a panel van variant of the HHR beginning in 2007. Assembled in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and marketed throughout North America, production of the HHR ended in May 2011. The HHR was replaced in the U.S. by the Chevrolet Captiva Sport. This was a rebadged version of the Opel Antara. However, the Captiva Sport was only available as a fleet vehicle and was not available new to the general public.

Design

The vehicle's design was inspired by the late-1940s/early 1950s Chevrolet cars and trucks, specifically the 1947 Chevrolet Suburban and Advance Design pickups, with large, square fender flares and a hemispherical grille. The design of the HHR has been credited to Bryan Nesbitt who was a former designer at Chrysler where he was the lead designer of the Chrysler PT Cruiser. Nesbitt was recruited by GM to join its design staff and served for a time as the chief designer of the Chevrolet brand. The HHR had a cargo-carrying capacity of 62.7 cubic feet (1.78 m3). All models had a flat-load floor (passenger models have 60/40 split bench) and fold-flat front passenger seat. For the 2007 model year, it was available in four trim levels; LS, LT, 2LT, and Special Edition. A panel van variant was also made available in 2007 for only the LT trim and became available on all trim levels in 2008. A "Half Panel" (RPO code AA5) rear quarter window delete option was available in the 2008 to 2010 model years.

Common 2010 Chevrolet Hhr problems

The 2010 Chevrolet HHR has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to engine performance, gas caps, and control arms.

One of the most common issues is poor engine performance, which has been reported by some owners of the 2011 Chevrolet HHR redesign. If you experience these symptoms, it is recommended to have your vehicle checked by a licensed mechanic for a proper diagnosis.

Another common issue is a loose or worn gas cap, which has been reported across all Chevy HHR model years. Although this problem does not typically affect ride quality, it can cause the check engine light to illuminate, leading to harmful vapor being released into the air and increased fuel consumption. Gas caps can cost between $10 and $100 to replace.

Additionally, the 2010 Chevrolet HHR has been reported to have problems with control arms, which have been replaced twice on the passenger side and once on the driver's side in one owner's experience. This issue can lead to the car being in the shop for extended periods, causing inconvenience and additional expenses.

Despite these issues, the Chevrolet HHR has a 4.0 out of 5.0 reliability rating, ranking it 13th out of 36 compact cars.

In summary, the 2010 Chevrolet HHR has several common problems related to engine performance, gas caps, and control arms. However, it is still a dependable daily driver with a good reliability rating and lower than average repair and maintenance costs.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-12
  • VIN: 3GNBACDV3AS
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Although this vehicle is a 2010 HHR, it has less than 23000 miles on it, has been garaged kept and maintained impeccably. The warning light blinks at random and then the power steering fails. It does not matter the speed of the vehicle and happens at random. Once turned off and restarted, the power steering works for approx 5 minutes and then fails again. There was a recall on 2009-2010 HHRs for sudden loss of power steering issued in 3/2014, recall # 14V153000. This recall is not VIN# specific. However, when I contact the dealer for repair of this vehicle, I am told that the recall does not pertain to my VIN#, so its not covered. NHTSA has more than 135 complaints about HHRs since 10/2019 with more than half of them being steering issues. This clearly is a wider recall issue than originally thought. My vehicle is inoperable due to this safety issue. I filed a complaint with GM. They told me it was not their issue and I could pay to have it diagnosed and fixed at a dealership. This is a GM issue due to the amount of complaints about this exact problem from other owners. I am hoping GM is made aware of the widespread issues and does the right thing, issuing another recall for all 2009-2010 HHRs regardless of VIN#.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-07
  • VIN: 3GNBABDB3AS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Noticed that the cruise control would disengage randomly when activated. I checked the function of the brake lights at night and found that the brake lights would turn themselves on randomly with zero brake input, disengaging the cruise control. In this state, depressing the brake pedal more than around 30-40% would turn the brake lights off, even with the brake pedal fully pressed. Furthermore, with the brake pedal pressed to a moderate level, the cruise control is able to be engaged, even with obvious brake pressure being applied. This defeats the cruise control disengagement feature and the cruise control system will fight against the braking system to maintain speed instead of turning itself off as it seems to rely solely on the brake lights for the automatic disengagement. This issue is quite dangerous as this seems to happen quite often with the brake lights, but I cannot find any sort of consistent scenario that causes these issues to occur.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-25
  • VIN: 3GNBACDV3AS
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Noticed gasoline dripping under the vehicle just behind the driver side rear door. Upon investigation discovered steel fuel line has corroded between a plastic support bracket and fiber heat shield. This seems to be due to a design that allows moisture and road debris (salt) to accumulate, leading to corrosion. This could lead to total loss of power to the vehicle, and poses a risk of fire while in operation or while parked.

  • Summary: I smelled a strong odor of gas behind the right rear wheel of my 2010 Chevy HHR. Two different mechanics verified that the fuel lines had rusted through and need to replace. The first mechanic said that the car was unsafe to drive, and that he was not qualified to replace the lines. I had the vehicle towed to a Chevy dealership would confirmed that the lines rusted through. Google search states the cost to replace the fuel lines including labor will be around $1,034. The dealership is charging me $1,754! During my Google search, I saw that many other owners of Chevy HHRs have had the same issues. I wish for Chevy to reimburse me the expense to replace the fuel lines.

2010 Chevrolet Hhr recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2010 Chevrolet Hhr.

2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
  • Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
2014-04-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
  • Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
  • Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
2014-03-31
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2006 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2006 Malibu Maxx, 2009-2010 HHR (non-turbo), 2010 Cobalt, 2008-2009 Saturn Aura and 2004-2007 Ion, and 2005-2009 Pontiac G6. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
  • Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will perform one of four bulletins. Parts are not currently available. GM expects to send an interim notification around May 28, 2014. When parts are available, owners will be mailed a second letter to come in to have the applicable bulletin applied. Bulletin 14115 covers model year 2004-2007 Saturn Ion, 2009-2010 Chevrolet HHR and 2010 Chevrolet Cobalts. Dealers will replace the EPS motor. Bulletin 14116 covers model year 2004-2006 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, 2005-2006 Pontiac G6 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from March 1, 2008, through June 27, 2008. Dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly and EPS motor controller unit. Bulletin 14118 covers model year 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from October 1, 2007, through January 31, 2008. Dealers will replace the EPS motor controller unit. The recall began on July 17, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, Saturn at 1-800-553-6000, and Pontiac at 1-800-620-7668. GM's number for this recall is N140115. Note: GM bulletin number 14119 will be implemented for model year 2006-2008 and early production of 2009 Chevrolet HHR (non-turbo) and model year 2003 Saturn ION to provide EPS Motor replacement for the life of the vehicle.

  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. I had a few issues with my car, including a recall on the ignition that took a while to get fixed. Despite receiving multiple notices, the dealership seemed to have trouble getting the part in. Eventually, I had to insist that they fix it, and even then, they didn't offer a rental until I demanded one. Later on, I noticed a recall for the power steering, but I didn't want to go through the hassle of dealing with the dealership again. I also had some issues with the airbag and a door that wouldn't stay shut, which ended up being quite expensive to fix. Despite all this, I take good care of my car and it has relatively low mileage. Hi there! I've been having some trouble with my car lately. It seems to be stuck in 3rd gear and occasionally stalls when I try to take off from a stop. The check engine light also came on the next day, so I decided to take it in to get checked out. Although I was a bit hesitant at first, the team at the dealership were really helpful and took a look at it for me. Unfortunately, it turns out that the powertrain warranty doesn't cover the issue, but they were able to replace a piece of plastic for me for $350. While it's not ideal, I'm grateful that they were able to help me out. I'm still figuring out what to do next, but I'm hopeful that I can work something out with the Ford dealer across the street. Thanks for listening!

I purchased my 2010 HHR in 2010 and unfortunately experienced several issues with it. I had to replace three ignition switches, luckily they were recalled. The Cam Shaft Advance sensor also went out and the dealership quoted me $680 to repair it. The power steering had issues and the whole front end would lurch and jump when I put the car in reverse. Additionally, the cooling fan threw a blade and was out of balance, costing me $380. Over the course of four years, I had to deal with several out-of-pocket expenses, including a $350 water pump replacement, a $760 alternator replacement, and two turn signal switches that failed to turn off, costing $400. The master power window switch also malfunctioned, and I had to pay $189 for the repair. On one occasion, while driving on the highway, the car lost power and I had to maintain 4800 RPM to do 55 mph. I took it to the dealer and had to pay $1789 for transmission repair, even though the car only had 48,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, when the transmission fails, it also affects the ABS, brake lights, and stability control system, causing them to flash. The airbag light also comes on intermittently, and the speakers to the stereo only work when they want to. I understand that some people may think that we are just complaining, but these issues have cost me over $4,000 in just six months. I bought this car new, and it has been a frustrating experience since then. I will not be purchasing another GM car again. When I contacted GM, they only offered me a $500 certificate towards purchasing another GM car, which I declined.

I have the LT 2.4l e85 equipped engine with an automatic transmission. It's in an SUV class and it's sporty, which is a win-win. When you give it gas, it goes, so power isn't bad. Even being in an SUV class, I get about 29mpg on the highway, which is pretty good. If you plan on going on vacation or traveling with a lot of cargo, it's best not to bring more than 5 or 4 people as it can get cramped with a lot of people and cargo. The suspension is nice, a good mix between sporty and comfortable. It's rated to tow up to 1,500lbs, which isn't much for an SUV. The seats aren't bad either. I have well over 200,000 total miles driving on this car and I've experienced 2 major problems so far. If you hit the brakes really hard, they may go out and you won't be able to stop. The emergency brake is also false. I believe the fix to this problem is a bad wheel sensor. Another problem is that sometimes when you start the engine, it will make a bad ticking noise and you'll need to shut off the engine and then start it again. Not as bad, but the transmission is rough when you're stopped and still in gear.

This car is a great option for those looking for a crossover/wagon econocar daily driver. It is fairly comfortable and decent on most roads, although it can be a bit jittery on hard-scrabble dirt. In terms of city driving, it may not be the best in its class, but it still manages to get 18 to 23 MPG depending on how short your drive is and how hard you drive. While it would be great if it could get 28 MPG City and 40 highway, it's important to remember that corporations prioritize profitable vehicles like trucks and SUVs. The 2.2 L engine is decent, but it may take a bit of time to accelerate from a dead stop. However, it can still carry a big load of stuff, which is a plus. It's worth noting that some parts like the front end suspension, wheel bearings, and even the plastic driver side door handle may need to be replaced before 60k miles, which can be a bit costly. While Chevy and GM may not meet Honda and Toyota's standards, this car can still last up to 75k miles if well-maintained.

I encountered several issues with my car. Firstly, the no seat belt light for the passenger would show even when no one was sitting there. The dealer claimed that cell phones caused it to malfunction. Secondly, the car would suddenly apply the autobrake, causing the car to slow down and shake. It was a very scary experience. The ESC or something similar was cutting on, and I had to pull over and restart the car. The dealer claimed they had never heard of the problem, but I found online forums where others had experienced the same issue. Thirdly, there were several recalls that I had to deal with. Fourthly, the door handle was made of cheap plastic and broke. The dealer wanted to charge me around $400 to fix it, but I found a replacement on Amazon for $50 and installed it myself. Lastly, the rotor and brakes went out, which I think was caused by problem #2. It cost me $530 to fix. I hope this information helps others who may be experiencing similar issues.

Positive 2010 Chevrolet Hhr car reviews

Congratulations on your new 2010 HHR! It's great to hear that the interior size is comparable to your previous 2000 Blazer. It's also wonderful that you're enjoying the interior changes made from the 2006 HHR model. The body style is identical to the Heritage '51 Model, which is a classic design. It's good to know that the car feels solid and runs quietly, especially with the bigger engine you chose. Although the cup holder positioning is still a bit of a problem, it's great to hear that the car runs smoothly after the initial lag on take-off. Here's to hoping that your new car lasts for at least 10 years!

Great choice! It sounds like you really enjoy this model. This is your third one, that's impressive! Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us.

This car is definitely a driver's car! The smooth turbo makes it peppy and responsive, while the Brembo brakes keep everything under control. Plus, folding down the rear seats makes it easy to throw a bike or snowboard in the back. And with front-wheel drive, it does great on the snow. Overall, it's a great purchase!

  4. Mortimer Morissette 2024-09-09

I've owned 5 HHR's since 2006 (love the car), and out of those 5, only two had issues with the turbos. However, I've never had any other problems with any of them, not even a water leak or radio problem. Unfortunately, my 2010 model had a piece of tubing connected to the turbo that holds 20 pounds of pressure and was made out of plastic that failed. The Chevy dealer has been unable to locate the part nationwide, even with GM's help. I'm wondering if it's possible to contact the assembly plant for a part or have one fabricated? The dealer stated that GM won't allow them to fabricate a part, so I've been without my 600-mile 2010 car for over a week. Thankfully, with GM's help, I was able to get a loaner car after 5 days.

I was fortunate enough to inherit this car from my parents, although it wouldn't have been my first choice for an SUV. In my opinion, it's a bit too small to be considered a true SUV and I often feel a bit cramped inside. If you have a passenger, be prepared to store your purse in the back seat. Additionally, the drink holders between the seats aren't the most convenient. Despite these minor inconveniences, my 2010 HHR has only 55,000 miles on it and has proven to be a reliable vehicle. In fact, I recently drove it from California to Texas without any issues!
