2009 Chevrolet Hhr problems
The Chevrolet HHR (an initialism for Heritage High Roof) is a retro-styled, high-roofed, five-door, five-passenger, front-wheel drive wagon designed by Bryan Nesbitt and launched by the American automaker Chevrolet at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show as a 2006 model.
The HHR shares the GM Delta platform with the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Saturn Ion. Chevrolet also marketed a panel van variant of the HHR beginning in 2007. Assembled in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and marketed throughout North America, production of the HHR ended in May 2011. The HHR was replaced in the U.S. by the Chevrolet Captiva Sport. This was a rebadged version of the Opel Antara. However, the Captiva Sport was only available as a fleet vehicle and was not available new to the general public.
Design
The vehicle's design was inspired by the late-1940s/early 1950s Chevrolet cars and trucks, specifically the 1947 Chevrolet Suburban and Advance Design pickups, with large, square fender flares and a hemispherical grille. The design of the HHR has been credited to Bryan Nesbitt who was a former designer at Chrysler where he was the lead designer of the Chrysler PT Cruiser. Nesbitt was recruited by GM to join its design staff and served for a time as the chief designer of the Chevrolet brand. The HHR had a cargo-carrying capacity of 62.7 cubic feet (1.78 m3). All models had a flat-load floor (passenger models have 60/40 split bench) and fold-flat front passenger seat. For the 2007 model year, it was available in four trim levels; LS, LT, 2LT, and Special Edition. A panel van variant was also made available in 2007 for only the LT trim and became available on all trim levels in 2008. A "Half Panel" (RPO code AA5) rear quarter window delete option was available in the 2008 to 2010 model years.

Common 2009 Chevrolet Hhr problems
The Chevrolet HHR, produced between 2006 and 2011, has been known for some common problems that have been reported by its owners. Here are the most frequently mentioned issues and their details:
- VVT Solenoid Valves: The VVT (Variable Valve Timing) solenoid valves control the variable valve timing of the camshafts. When these valves fail, the engine may run roughly, stall, or trigger a check engine light with codes related to the valves. Regular oil changes and maintaining the correct oil level are crucial to prevent these valves from failing.
- Throttle Body: The throttle body, which is responsible for controlling the air intake, can cause engine issues when it fails. Symptoms include a rough engine, low idle, stalling, and a check engine light with a throttle body-related code. In most cases, the throttle body needs to be replaced rather than cleaned.
- Coolant System: The coolant system in the Chevrolet HHR may require more frequent flushes than other vehicles. It is recommended to flush the coolant every 60,000 miles instead of the standard 150,000 miles. Neglecting this can lead to plugged heater cores or radiators, often requiring replacement of the heater core.
- Gas Cap: A loose or damaged gas cap can cause an EVAP code and trigger a check engine light. It is essential to check the gas cap for tightness and any damage to the seal or ratchet. Replacing the gas cap may be necessary if it is faulty.
- Power Steering: The Chevrolet HHR has an electronically assisted power steering system. After a jump-start, the power steering may not function correctly. Removing the fuse box cover can provide instructions on how to reset the power steering system.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-01
- VIN: 3GNCA73X79S
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I was backing my car out of the garage and I noticed a line of liquid on the ground, indicating a leak. I immediately stopped the car, got out and took a look. I traced the leak back to the drivers side at the rear, just before the tire. I could see fuel dripping down from under the car. The exhaust pipe right near the dripping was also wet. I could smell gas and I confirmed that was what was dripping by smelling a drop after I let it fall on my finger. Definitely gasoline. After the dripping stopped, I pushed the car back into the garage. I used a QuickJack to raise the car to get a better look at the area where the leak was coming from. There was massive corrosion/rust of the metal lines in the area. The leak was easily found by just looking for where the lines were wet. Even though fuel was no longer dripping (the engine was off so there was no fuel pressure anymore), there was still wetness from the gas leaking through the rusted area. I will not drive the car again until the leak has been repaired. Considering the fact that the exhaust pipe had also gotten wet from the leak, the chance of a fire was VERY LIKELY. I consider myself very lucky to have found the leak when I did, rather than have a fire occur while driving. Even if I were to pull over and shut the engine off immediately, a significant amount of fuel would leak out and feed the fire as the fuel escapes under pressure. This certainly could cause the rest of the car to catch fire. This is clearly unsafe and dangerous. If the leak occurred after the car was put in the garage with the exhaust still hot, a fire could not only consume the vehicle but the garage and the house as well. That could cause injury or even death in a worst case scenario. This is clearly an unsafe design and a clear risk to both people and property. This absolutely should be the basis for a recall where the corroded lines are replaced free with new lines made of a more durable material such as stainless steel.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-16
- VIN: 3GNCA53V89S
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: When driving my 2009 HHR the steering wheel shakes & vibrate at different intervals. Usually while slowing down to a stop & sometimes after during high speeds. Recently the noise it made was frightening. I had to use my emergency flashers & drive 50 mi per hr. on the freeway to arrive home safely. I took my car to Mark Chevrolet & reported it on 08/02/2021. The car's mileage was 133344. The car is not an everyday vehicle that is driven often. I received the car on 08/17/2021 after the steering column & shaft were replaced along with resurfacing front brake rotors & rear brake job. On August 18, 2021 while driving on the freeway I went to blow my horn at a hazardous situation & discovered none of the steering wheels controls were working, horn & etc. I immediately returned my car to Mark Chevrolet & reported their negligence & how they had risk my life to release the car without these functions working. They supposedly corrected the problem. On 07/05/2022 I had to return my car to Mark Chevrolet because I was experiencing the identical problem with my steering wheel vibrating & make noise. My cars mileage was only 137641 less than a year later with just 4,297 miles driven. They claimed to have tightened something up in the column & returned my car on 07/12/2022. As I was driving on 07/16/2022 again the steering wheel started vibrating & making strange loud noises. I felt so unsafe & tried to make it home safely driving at a reduced speed. I plan to return the car this week back to Mark Chevrolet and am asking for support to rectify this situation. I understand there was a recall on Chevrolet HHR 2009 Steering Electric Power Assist System. I don't know if this issue is related to that. I never received communication from General Motors stating that my vehicle was affected but apparently there is a problem. Please Help!

I had my fingers of my right hand partially out of the window holding the top of the door frame. The driver hit the remote switch for auto close of the power window. As I felt intense pain in my right hand I quickly withdrew my hand and noted spurting blood, mutilated pinky finger and intense pain. The driver's view of my hand may have been obstructed by my body. My fingertip was still stuck between the top of the window and door frame. I went directly to the nearest Emergency Room and was diagnosed with a traumatic amputation of the right hand (dominant) fifth finger with complete loss of the nail. Three hand x-rays show open, partially displaced fracture of the distal phalange. Due to severe mutilation of the fingertip it could not be reattached to the remaining portion of my finger. This vehicle must not have been in compliance with the FMVSS No. 118 that required anti-pinch windows in vehicles from 2008 forward. Owner's manual has no statement that it has this safety feature.

2009 Chevrolet Hhr recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2009 Chevrolet Hhr.
- Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
- Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
- Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
- Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
- Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2006 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2006 Malibu Maxx, 2009-2010 HHR (non-turbo), 2010 Cobalt, 2008-2009 Saturn Aura and 2004-2007 Ion, and 2005-2009 Pontiac G6. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
- Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will perform one of four bulletins. Parts are not currently available. GM expects to send an interim notification around May 28, 2014. When parts are available, owners will be mailed a second letter to come in to have the applicable bulletin applied. Bulletin 14115 covers model year 2004-2007 Saturn Ion, 2009-2010 Chevrolet HHR and 2010 Chevrolet Cobalts. Dealers will replace the EPS motor. Bulletin 14116 covers model year 2004-2006 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, 2005-2006 Pontiac G6 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from March 1, 2008, through June 27, 2008. Dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly. Bulletin 14117 covers model year 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from February 1, 2008, through February 28, 2008. Dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly and EPS motor controller unit. Bulletin 14118 covers model year 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from October 1, 2007, through January 31, 2008. Dealers will replace the EPS motor controller unit. The recall began on July 17, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, Saturn at 1-800-553-6000, and Pontiac at 1-800-620-7668. GM's number for this recall is N140115. Note: GM bulletin number 14119 will be implemented for model year 2006-2008 and early production of 2009 Chevrolet HHR (non-turbo) and model year 2003 Saturn ION to provide EPS Motor replacement for the life of the vehicle.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GMs recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.

Only complaint: Panel trim desperately needs backup camera. Impossible to see backing out of a parking space. Good handling, good brakes. Stiff suspension can be a little harsh on rough roads. A real sleeper at red lights with good acceleration when you want it. With the Stage 1 dealer upgrade it will smoke the tires with traction control turned off and competitive mode on. After Stage 1 upgrade requires premium grade gas and still gets 30 mpg on the highway. Overall, I love this little wagon and have driven it daily for the past 6 years. It's a shame that Chevy discontinued this model.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 09 HHR during a recent trip to Denver NC via Norton VA. Even though it was pretty loaded down with luggage, it handled the steep hills like a champ and I didn't have any problems with the brakes, except that the pedal felt a bit soft. On the way back to Ohio through the Blue Ridge on I77, it ran great with the cruise set at 70. Throughout the trip, I averaged an impressive 29.2 mpg and found it to be a really comfortable ride. Just a heads up, you do have to know how to set and use the outside mirrors as there are some blind spots. Take care!

You're in for a treat with this vehicle! Having owned or leased at least 60 vehicles in my lifetime, I can confidently say that this one is one of the best in its class. It boasts a well-designed exterior, is incredibly stable, and is an absolute joy to drive. Plus, it's super quiet and gets great mileage. I've read a lot of reviews and I have to say, I haven't found any of the negatives that others have reported. Sure, the cupholders could be better and the front visibility is slightly impaired due to the non-curved windshield, but these are minor issues. If you're looking for a fantastic domestic vehicle, don't let the skeptics deter you - this car is definitely worth buying or leasing!

I recently purchased a rental car with 8200 miles on it. While the fuel mileage isn't fantastic (18-21 on E85 and 45 with my VW Bug diesel), the car is well-built and handles well with proper tire inflation. There are a few quirks, such as the light switch momentarily going off when switching from bright to dim and vice versa, and torque steer when accelerating can be startling, so hold on tight! I appreciate the storage in the middle of the dash, but there isn't a lot of storage space available around the driver. The small windshield takes some getting used to, and I wish the steering wheel adjustment had a greater range. Overall, this car is great for long trips, but it would be even better with a dash like a Peterbilt (straight dash with lots of gauges) and more cupholders.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with this 2009 truck that I absolutely love. It's been my daily driver to my home in Lake Wallenpaupack Pennsylvania and I'm getting about 27 miles per gallon on the highway. It's got plenty of cargo room for a family of four and the 4 wheel Brembo disc brakes provide great stopping power. I've also added some chrome accents to the exterior to give it a custom look. If you get a chance to test drive one, I think you'll be hooked!

This car has had some issues since I purchased it, but I have been proactive in addressing them. I have replaced several parts, including the ignition cylinder, fuse block, BCM, control arm, power steering motor, and window motor. I have also had the electrical system rewired and the brakes replaced multiple times. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my ability to maintain and repair this vehicle. I am committed to ensuring its safety and reliability for myself and my passengers. While I acknowledge that this car may not be the best fit for everyone, I am confident in my ability to handle any issues that may arise.Although it is currently my only vehicle and I have a remaining payment plan of 2 1/2 years, I am considering alternative options as this car has not met my expectations and has been unreliable.

I can relate to your experience with the HHR. It's important to take the time to really get the feel of a vehicle before making a purchase. As an older lady myself, I understand the importance of finding a car that feels comfortable and safe. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the HHR and I wish you the best of luck in finding a car that suits your needs.

I have a LT2 large engine that I bought with 9000 miles on it. During the first year of ownership, I had to have new struts installed, a new catalytic converter, and currently, it's in the shop to have a sensor replaced. Unfortunately, the tire pressure monitoring system doesn't work, and I can't seem to keep the pressure in the right front tire. It's been a costly year, with over a thousand dollars spent on repairs alone. I'm considering trading it in soon, but I wanted to warn others to be cautious. The ride is quite rough, similar to a truck without shocks, and it's hard on tires. Additionally, there's a lot of road noise. I'm not a fan of this car, and in my 76 years, I've only had one other car that was as bad, a 1981 Chevy T-top Monte Carlo. I think it's time for me to explore other car brands.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the car my wife and I bought back in '09. Overall, it's been a reliable car that's great on gas and perfect for road trips. However, I did notice that as a taller person, I had to hunch over a bit to see out the windshield. We did have an issue with the ignition within the first year, but thankfully it was covered under warranty. We've also had to replace the brake rotors and pads a couple of times, and most recently had to replace a leaking front strut. While we haven't had to pay for any repairs yet, our warranty is ending soon. All in all, while I wouldn't purchase another one, I'm grateful for the memories we've made in this car.

Our 2008 HHR has rust at the bottom of the doors. Despite my attempts to address the issue with Hare Chevrolet in Noblesville, Indiana, they have refused to take responsibility and have even accused me of wrongdoing. However, I am confident in my efforts to maintain the car and believe that the dealership should take responsibility for this issue.
