2006 Jeep Commander problems
The Jeep Commander XK and XH (for diesel-powered export version) is a mid-size SUV that was manufactured from 2005 to 2010 by the Jeep division of the American manufacturer Chrysler.
Concept car
Jeep exhibited a concept car named Commander during the 1999 auto show circuit. The concept featured an experimental direct methanol fuel cell that produced electricity to charge a nickel–metal hydride battery pack. Full-time four-wheel drive was by a severe duty electric motor on each axle. The suspension could be raised 4 inches (102 mm) for traversing off-road purposes. The overall styling influenced the development of the third-generation Grand Cherokee that was at that time six years away. The concept car had the same height as production Grand Cherokees, but was about 8 inches (203 mm) wider. This allowed for an interior featuring an extra wide center console in the front and three bucket seats in the second row. The Commander concept had no relation to the production SUV.
Production
The production version of the Jeep Commander (XK and the diesel-powered XH export version) debuted at the 2005 New York Auto Show as a five- or seven-passenger counterpart of the Jeep Liberty. It was developed to target consumers who wanted a three-row SUV, but designed to be only two inches longer than the Jeep Grand Cherokee with its two-rows of seats as well as to be assembled on the same production line.
It shared its unibody construction, independent short/long arm front suspension and its 5-link live rear axle with the Grand Cherokee on which it was based. It featured an upright windshield and squared-off sides. Its stepped roof was disguised by the roof rack; a design similar to the GMC Envoy XL and Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT. This allowed the second and third-row seats to be mounted higher than the first-row seats.

Common 2006 Jeep Commander problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2006 Jeep Commander, several common problems have been reported:
- Exhaust Leaks: Some 2006-2010 Jeep Commander units with 3.7 V6 and 4.7 V8 engines have been prone to exhaust leaks. Owners have described hearing a ticking noise from the exhaust manifold, which was later found to be caused by damaged exhaust manifold bolts. Replacing faulty gaskets and bolts has been a common solution to this issue.
- Service 4WD System Warning Light: Owners have reported instances where the service 4WD system warning light would activate suddenly, even when no fault codes were stored in the final drive control module (FDCM). A software update for the vehicle’s FDCM has been effective in resolving this issue on most affected vehicles.
- Manual Temperature Control Malfunction: Some owners have noticed warm air coming through the instrument panel outlets even after selecting the cold setting. Mechanics have recommended installing a revised air distribution housing to address this malfunction.
- Delayed Transmission Engagement: Units from the 2006-2009 model years of the Jeep Commander may exhibit delayed transmission engagement due to a faulty internal cooler return filter. Replacing the cooler filters with the “AB” suffix in the part number has been suggested as a solution to this problem.
- Electrical Problems: Potential electrical issues have been reported in 2008 Jeep Commanders, including problems with the radio, faulty backup sensors, and malfunctioning dash gauges without any apparent cause. While some of these issues may seem minor, they should not be ignored, and owners are advised to have their vehicles inspected by a mechanic promptly to diagnose and address these electrical concerns.
These common problems with the 2006 Jeep Commander highlight various issues that owners have faced, ranging from safety concerns like engine stalling to comfort and convenience issues related to temperature control malfunctions and electrical problems.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-05
- VIN: 1J8HG58276C
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: Transmission over temp is a never ending light that lights up daily. I've had 3 reprogrammed PCMs and the ECM replaced as well. The car was also reprogrammed at the dealership twice with the results the same. It will work for a couple days then right back to the original issue and including a few more. Recently the trans over temp came on and stalled in rush hour traffic. Resulting in a almost serious accident. Several attempts made to restart the car. Started and stalled immediately. After the 4th time and reving the engine very hard it stayed running. I've called the recall line on this and several other recalls (1 that was under warranty) with no resolution. This is now a safety issue for me and others on the road. This car is a lemon and should be taken off the road. I've waisted money at the dealership being charged over $300 each time to reprogrammed with no improvement. Bought 3 PCMs at $1200 each. I replaced almost everything under the hood and car with no positive results.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-23
- VIN: 1J8HG48K96C
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Ignition switch recall which was issued on my jeep commander was addressed and ultimately an appointment was made upon availability. However, since the recall, the jeep will not function normally upon initial start up attempt progressively into more attempts thereafter. Connection between key switch and cylinder not responding to connection, lack thereof. This occurred at first seldom to more and more random periodic "no signal, no start". Recalls are supposed to fix the initial severe problem, correct? Not result into another problem that wasn't present before, right? Found my time fruitless in getting clarity of this issue resolved from dealer. What can I do? What should be done? As the consumer we will feel the job done wasn't done correctly. Fact is there were not any start up issues prior to the recall addressed and ignition switch replaced/fixed?

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-27
- VIN: 1J8HG58226C
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: 2006 Jeep Commander Limited 5.7L V8 Message as appears on dash - TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP While driving a short distance the message TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP appears, the fan kicks on HIGH & is very loud, and it feels like the transmission disengages like being thrown into neutral, but is still drivable. About 2 weeks prior, I noticed smoke coming out from under hood & the engine coolant tank was almost empty. There were no visible leaks on carport. I refilled the tank & immediately called Kilby Automotive repair shop, then took it in. They said that the radiator cap needed to be replaced. The also said the valve cover gasket was leaking. They replaced the radiator cap & made an appointment for June 3rd to replace the valve cover gasket. Before that appointment the vehicle started displaying the TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP message. I took it into Kilby Automotive on May 27, 2021. They said it was a faulty transmission temperature sensor, but they could not repair. They have done a lot of repairs on the vehicle for several years. I called Ultimate Luxury Auto Service explaining the issue. The man said that he could put a new sensor in & there is a broken transmission mount. He replaced the sensor. Fix mount later. When I was driving home, the same message appeared & the fan kicked on as before. I messaged the shop & took the vehicle back in. They put a 2nd sensor in, drove it & received the same TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP message. They returned the 2 new sensors & put my original sensor back in. They said they were sorry they could not fix it & dropped the price of repairs. I entered the make, model, & message online & found out a lot of people have the same problem. Some people have said they replaced numerous parts & it did not fix it, and others say they replaced the PCM. I am disabled and do not want to be stranded or have a vehicle fire. I am afraid that it would pose a risk to me & others, as transmission oil can ignite on hot surfaces and cause a fire in the engine.

2006 Jeep Commander recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2006 Jeep Commander.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.

A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.
- Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.

Negative 2006 Jeep Commander car reviews
Positive 2006 Jeep Commander car reviews
-
I noticed that you had a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and decided to switch to the Commander for its third row seat, which is perfect for small children, and its safety features. I must say, the 4.7 V8 is a significant improvement over the old I 6. The ride is incredibly smooth and quiet, making it a great choice for both city and highway driving. While the Explorer my wife drives has a V6 that gets about 2-3 mpg better than the Commander, I still think the Commander is a better choice overall.
-
We were a bit sceptical about the commander but it turned out to be a great vehicle. It has reached 165000 miles and the engine and transmission keep running stronger than ever. I highly recommend this vehicle, especially if you have a big family like we do!

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you mentioned you bought your Jeep this year and I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying it! It's great to have a car that you love, isn't it? I especially love the space inside of it and how well it handles in the snow. Thanks for sharing your experience with me!

This vehicle has an exceptional ride quality, surpassing that of many SUVs and full-size trucks. Its turning radius is also impressive, even compared to most full-size cars. Although I experienced an issue with the transmission downshifting hard into 2nd on deceleration, the dealer was able to reset the computer and the issue was resolved. The gas mileage is not the best, averaging just over 15 mpg for mixed use. During long road trips, I have experienced discomfort in my legs due to the seat. However, overall, this vehicle is a great choice. I would highly recommend considering the Hemi option.

I have the V6. I love the truck, but I must say that you won't get anything near 16/20 miles per gallon. In almost a year, I haven't averaged over 14 miles per gallon even though I do some highway driving.

We have owned this vehicle for a year now, and unfortunately, we have experienced several issues with it. Despite numerous trips to the shop, the problems persist, including stalling while in motion, which has caused some concern. We have also encountered issues with wind noise, water leaks, and the AC making unpleasant sounds. Additionally, there have been several recalls and a slow response throttle. We are aware that other owners of this car have faced similar problems, and we are hopeful that the ongoing investigation by NHTSA will lead to a resolution. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the non-hemi V8 my wife purchased back in 2006. The engine was incredibly strong and the ride was very smooth and quiet. The exterior had a solid and distinguishable look, but the interior was a bit bland with too much plastic. Unfortunately, we had to get rid of it due to its poor gas consumption. Even on all highway cruising trips, we only got 14 miles to the gallon at best, and with such a small 18-gallon gas tank, we found ourselves filling up 2-3 times a week! We recently traded it in for a brand new Hyundai Sonata Limited V6, which we're really enjoying. Thanks for listening!

My husband and I both own Jeeps - a 2008 Commander and a 2006 model - and we've been experiencing similar issues. We've had to replace the starter, brakes, and wheel bearings, and my radio and passenger side window only work intermittently. To make matters worse, both vehicles have been leaking water onto the front floorboards. As longtime Jeep enthusiasts, we're starting to question whether the love of Jeeps is worth the frustration of dealing with these design flaws. We hope that Chrysler will prioritize quality over cost-cutting measures, especially given the price we pay for these vehicles.

I've had my Jeep for a year now and unfortunately, I've experienced some of the issues that I've read about in reviews. The transmission slips and clunks, the main seal started leaking, and the windshield whistles. When shifting from reverse to drive, there's a hard clunk and it feels like the car is going to fall apart when going over bumps. To add to the list, the AC isn't cooling as well as it used to. Despite all of this, the dealership insists that everything is fine and it's just the nature of the beast. I'm not quite sure what to do other than keep bringing it in for check-ups and wasting both my time and theirs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

This Jeep has had several issues, including stalling at low speeds, a whistling noise from the sunroof, rusted roof panels, a leak that cannot be found, malfunctioning window controls, and radio issues in cold weather. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my ability to address these problems and ensure that this Jeep runs smoothly. As a loyal Jeep owner, I am disappointed by these issues, but I am determined to find a solution and get back to enjoying my vehicle.
