1999 Volvo C70 problems

The Volvo C70 is a two-door, four-passenger sports GT manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2013 across two generations.

The first generation (1996–2005) was available as both a coupé (1996–2002) and softtop convertible (1997–2005). The second generation (2006–2013) was available as a retractable hardtop convertible.

First generation (1996–2005)

Volvo debuted the first generation C70 at the 1996 Paris Motor Show, and introduced it in Europe as a 1997 model, and a year later as a 1998 model in North America — with 2.0 (sold mostly in Italy), a low-pressure turbo (2.4L) and a high-pressure turbo (2.0L and 2.3L), 5-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engines and manual and automatic transmissions. Ian Callum designed the exterior and Mexican designer Jose Diaz de la Vega led the interior design team.

The C70 broke Volvo's decades-long styling tradition of boxy, rectilinear designs and was Volvo's first luxury coupe since the 780. According to a tongue-in-check remark made by Peter Horbury, Volvo's design chief from 1991 to 2002, with the C70, Volvo "kept the toy, and threw away the box!" "Our vision was to design a convertible that would meet the needs of a family of four looking for comfortable blue-sky motoring in a vehicle also providing stylish looks, performance and faultless driving and road-holding."

In a development program of 30 months and working with a Volvo 850-derived platform, Britain’s TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing) co-designed the car's basic design and suspension tuning with Volvo. Manufacture of the C70 was a joint venture until the two companies experienced disputes that threatened to interrupt production; TWR did not contribute to the second generation C70.

Volvo's first modern convertible, the C70 was manufactured in Uddevalla, Sweden on an assembly line separate from the 70-series sedan and station wagon. The four-passenger convertible featured an electrically heated glass rear window; automatic (pop-up) rollover hoops system, marketed as ROPS; seat belt pre-tensioners; A-pillars reinforced with boron steel; front and side airbags; and a safety cage — a horseshoe-like structure around the passenger compartment.

The cloth convertible top, initially available in four colors, was fully automatic, operated by a single, dashboard-mounted control. The top stored automatically under an integral rigid tonneau cover, using a system pioneered in modern convertibles with the fourth generation Mercedes SL.

The C70 convertible exhibited two negative traits endemic to convertibles: poor rear visibility and pronounced scuttle shake, a characteristic where the structural design of the bulkhead between the engine and passenger compartments of a convertible suffers sufficiently poor rigidity to negatively impact ride and handling — and allow noticeable vibration, shudder or chassis-flexing into the passenger compartment.

Early special editions featured two-tone leather interior with wood trim and a SC-901 (1998) Dolby Pro Logic I stereo with 3-disc integrated changer unit (via a cartridge) 400 watts of power and 11 high end Dynaudio speakers.

Common 1999 Volvo C70 problems

The Volvo C70, produced between 1997 and 2006, is known for its reliability, thanks to the use of many tried-and-tested components from the S70 saloon. However, some common issues have been reported by owners, which are important to be aware of when considering purchasing a used Volvo C70.

  1. Turbo Engine Failure: The turbo engines in the Volvo C70 are quite highly stressed. If not properly maintained, they can develop problems. Suspicious-looking blue or black smoke from the exhaust when revving a hot engine could indicate a failed turbo, which would require a replacement.
  2. Hood Wear and Tear: The hood of the Volvo C70 can suffer from wear and tear over time. It's essential to check the hood for any signs of damage and ensure it folds smoothly. Replacements and parts for the hood are expensive, so it's crucial to find a car with minimal wear.
  3. Leaking Door Mirrors: The Volvo C70 is notorious for having issues with leaking door mirrors. This can be challenging to fix and might require professional assistance. If the footwell carpets are wet, it's essential to check if the door mirrors are the culprit.
  4. Suspension Problems: Uneven tyre wear or signs of kerbing damage on the wheels could indicate a suspension problem. This might be due to worn-out components or even damage to the driveshaft. It's crucial to have any suspension issues addressed promptly to avoid further damage to the vehicle.
  5. ABS Control Module Failure: Some 1993-2000 850, S70, C70, and V70 models can have issues with the ABS control module, which can cause the ABS warning lamp to illuminate. This is often due to an internal failure of the module, which might require replacement.
  6. Fuel Door Hinge Failure: The plastic gas cap door hinge on the Volvo C70 can fail, causing the gas door to hang from the side of the vehicle. This not only looks unappealing but can also potentially damage the paint job.
  7. Shift Interlock Failure: The shift interlock, which prevents the driver from shifting the car from "PARK" into "DRIVE" unless the brakes are applied, can fail. This can be inconvenient and might require replacement of the micro-switch.
  8. Anti Sway Bar End Link Failure: The anti-sway bar end links on the Volvo C70 can fail, causing a loss of stability and handling. This issue is more common in models produced between 1993 and 2000.
  9. Convertible Top Micro-Switch/Potentiometer Problems: The convertible top's micro-switches or potentiometers can develop issues, causing problems with the operation of the top. This is a common problem in convertible models of the Volvo C70.
  10. Tailgate Interior Panel Failure: The interior tailgate panel on many Volvo wagon models, including the C70, can break away from the tailgate, leaving the panel hanging loose and interfering with the function of the tailgate lock/latch.

By being aware of these common issues, potential buyers can make informed decisions when considering a used Volvo C70. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent many of these problems from developing or worsening over time.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-06-20
  • VIN: YV1NC56D4XJ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE CAR REDUCED THE SPEED AND NOW IT STOPPED RUNNING BECAUSE THE ETM IS NOT WORKING. I CONTACTED VOLVO AND THEY SAID THAT THE WARRANTY IS NOT COVERED BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN OVER 10 YEARS. I BOUGHT THIS CAR FROM A PREVIOUS OWNER IN OCTOBER 2013 AND THEREFORE I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. NOW THEY WANT ME TO PAY APPROXIMATELY $900 TO FIX IT. THEY SAID THE WARRANTY STARTED FROM THE DAY THE FIRST CAR WAS BOUGHT WHICH WAS AUGUST 25, 1999 BUT IN MY OPINION IT SHOULD BE FROM THE FIRST TIME THERE WAS A PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED WITH THE ETM THAT CAUSED VOLVO TO RECALL AND BUY THE CARS BACK. VOLVO MADE APPROXIMATELY 300,000 CARS AND REPAIRED AND BOUGHT BACK AROUND 165,000 CARS. THIS MEANS THAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE ENCOUNTERING THE SAME PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD BY VOLVO THAT THE CAR I CURRENTLY OWN THE SOFTWARE WAS UPDATED IN NORTH CAROLINA. AS I SEE IT THEY NEGLECTED TO CHANGE THE THROTTLE IN THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A BIG SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THIS CAR CAN CAUSE MY FAMILY TO GET IN A CAR ACCIDENT. THE REGIONAL MANAGER INDICATED THAT THE CAR COULD NOT BE FIXED AND THAT I HAD TO PAY FOR THE LABOR AND THE PARTS. THEY ARE OFFERING TO GIVE ME A DISCOUNT ON THE REPAIRS BUT I FEEL THEY NEED TO TAKE CARE OF A PROBLEM THAT WAS CAUSED BY THE MANUFACTURER. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE DISCOUNTS FOR LABOR AND PARTS INDICATE THAT VOLVO UNDERSTAND THE SAFETY CONCERNS AND THE PROBLEMS OF THE CAR BUT ALSO THEY NEED TO TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM. I ASK TO SPEAK TO THE REGIONAL MANAGER AND I WAS TOLD BY THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE THAT I WAS NOT ALLOWED. I LEFT A MESSAGE TO HIM TO SEE IF WE CAN RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-12-31
  • VIN: YV1NK53D6XJ
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER
  • Summary: ON 12/31/2004 WHILE DRIVING HOME, THE ETM DASH LIGHT CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE WENT INTO "LIMP" MODE. I BARELY MADE IT HOME, AND SINCE IT WAS FRIDAY NIGHT, I COULD NOT CALL MY LOCAL GARAGE. ON MONDAY I HAD MY VEHICLE TOWED TO THE LOCAL GARAGE, WHERE THEY INFORMED ME THAT I HAD THE "ERROR CODE OF DEATH", THAT I WOULD HAVE TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST BIG CITY VOLVO GARAGE. THEY HAD SEEN MANY OF THESE TB PROBLEMS. I HAD IT TOWED TO SMC, INC. WHERE I WAS TOLD THAT THE ETM UNIT FAILED AND IT WAS MY FAULT FOR "USING CHEAP GAS" AND "FAILING TO SERVICE THE AIR CLEANERS". SINCE I ALWAYS BURN THE BEST FUEL AVAILABLE, AND ALWAYS GO TO THE DEALER GARAGE FOR ALL MY MAINTENANCE, I KNEW THAT WAS BOGUS. THE THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACED AS WAS A GASKET. I WAS OUTRAGED, AND EXPRESSED THIS TO THE SERVICE MANAGER, AND CHALLENGED HIS ACCUSATION. I EXPRESSED CONCERN ABOUT THE RELIABILITY OF THE REPLACEMENT PART. THE MAGNETI MORELLI ETM MODULES WHICH IS COMMON IN ALL 1999-2001 70-SERIES ENGINES ARE ALL STARTING TO FAIL. DOES THIS MEAN THAT WE ARE ALL USING "CHEAP GAS AND FAILING REGULAR MAINTENANCE"? NO, IT MEANS THAT THEIR LOUSY DESIGN USES METAL WIPERS AGAINST A THIN-FILM POLY RHEOSTAT, GUARANTEED TO RUB THRU WITHIN 30-60K MILES. IF THIS HAPPENS IN THE FAST LANE ON THE FREEWAY, SOMEONE IS GOING TO DIE. IF THIS HAPPENS ON A REMOTE WINTER HIGHWAY, SOMEONE IS GOING TO DIE. I WAS TOLD THAT VOLVO'S "LEGENDARY SAFETY" ONLY APPLIES TO CRASH TESTS, AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DEFECTIVE DESIGNS AND OTHER SAFETY ISSUES. JUST THIS WEEKEND A STRANDED MOTORIST WAS PLOWED DOWN BY A SEMI-TRUCK ON A LOCAL HIGHWAY. *JB

EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-05-18
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: YV1NK53D9XJ
  • Components: EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: I WOKE UP THIS MORNING TO FIND OUT THAT I HAD A FLAT TIRE. SO I GOT OUT THE FACTORY JACK THAT CAME WITH THE CAR AND PROCEEDED TO LIFT UP THE CAR. THE JACK THAT CAME WITH THE CAR ARE "SCISSOR-TYPE" AND HAS ONLY BEEN USED TWICE. SO, THE CAR WAS LIFTED ON ONE SIDE AND I PROCEEDED TO TAKE OFF THE FRONT TIRE. ALL OF THE SUDDEN, THE JACK GAVE WAY AND THE CAR CAME DOWN. LUCKILY THE FRONT TIRE WAS HALFWAY IN THE WHEEL-WELL, SO THE CAR JUST SETTLED ON THE TIRE WITH THE ROTOR PUSHING AGAINST THE INSIDE OF THE RIM (I NOTICED SCRATCHES INSIDE THE RIM AFTER I REMOVED THE TIRE). WELL, I TOOK A CLOSER LOOK AT THE JACK AND SAW THAT THE BIG, LONG SCREW BROKE IN HALF. I JUST COULDN'T IMAGINE THAT THE JACK VOLVO GIVES OUT WITH THEIR CARS WOULD SIMPLY BREAK, ESPECIALLY IF EVERYTHING WAS DONE PROPERLY. THE CAR WAS EMPTY, SO WEIGHT COULDN'T BE AN ISSUE. THERE WAS SOME LOWER BODY PANEL DAMAGE FROM THE JACK WHEN IT BROKE. ALSO, MY FINGERS GOT BRUISED AND SCRATCHED UP A BIT FROM THE IMPACT OF THE CAR FALLING ON THE FRONT TIRE THAT I WAS REMOVING AT THE TIME. *NLM

  • Date Of Incident: 2001-02-12
  • VIN: YV1NK56D7XJ
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: MY CAR HAS BEEN SERVICED ACCORDING TO VOLVO'S RECOMMENDATIONS. VOLVO DEALER BALANCED AND ROTATED MY TIRES AT 15,000 MILES AND INDICATED THEY WERE FINE. AL 16,000 MILES THE TWO REAR TIRES (WHICH WERE IN THE FRON UNTIL THE 15,000 MILE SERVICE) STARTED DISINTEGRATING AT 16,000 MILES (THE STEEL CORDS STARTED COMING OUT). THIS CAN'T BE NORMAL! I HAVE TRIED TO CONTACT VOLVO NUMEROUS TIMES (THE DEALER AND VOLVO'S 800 CUSTOMER SERVICENUMBER) AND VOLVO IS IGNORING MY CALLS. I SAW OTHER VOLVO C70 CARS AT THE DEALER WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS AND THEY ONLY HAD 12,000 MILES!. CAR TIRES SHOULD LAST LONGER THAN THIS! HAVE YOU RECEIVED OTHER COMPLAINTS FROM VOLVO C70 OWNERS?
