2013 Nissan Rogue problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Rogue is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan. It made its debut in October 2007 for the 2008 model year. Beginning in 2013 for the 2014 model year, the model has been merged with the X-Trail sold outside the North American market, making them identical. It is currently Nissan's best-selling vehicle in the United States.

As of 2023, the Rogue was manufactured at the Nissan Smyrna Assembly Plant in Tennessee, United States and at the Nissan Motor Kyushu plant in Kanda, Fukuoka, Japan. Between August 2014 and March 2020, it was also built at the Renault Samsung Motors plant in Busan, South Korea under contract.

First generation (S35; 2007)

The first-generation Rogue made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on 7 January 2007. It replaces the Nissan X-Trail in Canada as Nissan's entry-level SUV and the body-on-frame Nissan Xterra in Mexico due to the Smyrna plant freeing capacity for the Suzuki Equator, although the Xterra continued on sale in the United States and Canada through 2015 after being withdrawn from the Mexican market after the 2008 model year.

The first-generation Rogue was available in three trim levels in the United States: S, SV and SL, available with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

Common 2013 Nissan Rogue problems

The 2013 Nissan Rogue has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues span across various components of the vehicle, including the engine electrical system, power train, steering, windshield, brakes, and transmission.

One of the most prevalent issues is the engine electrical system failure, which can lead to a loss of engine power. This problem is associated with the electronic stability control system and has been reported to cause the vehicle to lose power at stop signs, during slow driving, or even under normal driving conditions.

Another major concern is the power train and vehicle speed control system. Several drivers have reported that their vehicles lost power and would not accelerate when driving, with some experiencing transmission problems as well. This issue is particularly problematic as it can affect the vehicle's ability to maintain speed and may require extensive repairs.

Steering issues have also been reported, with some drivers experiencing a loss of control or difficulty maintaining their lane. This problem is often accompanied by the steering lock light coming on, which can be alarming and potentially dangerous.

A less common but still concerning issue is the spontaneous cracking of the windshield without any contact from external objects. This problem has been reported by multiple drivers, although there is no clear explanation for why it occurs.

Faulty brakes are another issue that has been reported by some 2013 Nissan Rogue owners. Drivers have reported experiencing delays or a soft feel when applying the brakes, which can affect the vehicle's stopping ability and potentially lead to accidents.

However, the most significant issue reported by 2013 Nissan Rogue owners is extensive transmission failure. Many drivers have reported that their vehicles' transmissions failed at low mileage, often due to overheating. This problem can result in the vehicle being unable to accelerate or shift gears properly, which can be dangerous in certain driving situations.

In summary, the 2013 Nissan Rogue has several common problems that owners should be aware of, including engine electrical system failure, power train issues, steering problems, windshield cracking, faulty brakes, and transmission failure. These issues can range from minor inconveniences to major safety concerns, and it is essential for owners to address them promptly to ensure their vehicle's safe and reliable operation.

Is 2013 Nissan Rogue a good car?

Reliable, great value

This vehicle has been very reliable and never broke down. We performed regular recommended maintenance and owned 7 years after it was paid off. Good value, comfortable, has good cargo space without being a large SUV.

What is the biggest problem with Nissan Rogue?

The problematic transmission system is the likely culprit for the Rogue's most reported issue: acceleration loss. Reports claimed they experienced shaking, jerking, and stalling before the SUV accelerated. Faulty A/C: The Rogue's A/C system is prone to malfunction, causing it not to heat or cool the interior.

What is the CVT problem on a 2013 Nissan Rogue?

AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-02
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JN8AS5MV2DW
  • Components: AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: During a rear end accident on the highway when someone slammed on their brakes, I hit them at around 40 mph and slamming on my brakes to prevent it and the airbags did not deploy. The light was on the dashboard after the accident as if they did the deploy, the seatbelt blew out and will no longer retract. The front frame of the vehicle bent inwards at a 90 degrees angle puncturing the AC compressor, though the bumper has minimal damage. MA State Troopers noted that damage and allowed me to drive off since "the vehicle is not over heating or leaking", a body shop then said my car is totaled. My insurance company is investigating why/how the frame obtained extensive damage though the outer body is not as damaged. The vehicle has been parked since the accident and is available for inspection. My safety was at risk with a significant crash and the airbags not deploying, the seatbelt injured me, I am under medical treatment for injuries obtained after this accident. I have a police report, I have an insurance claim, I believe this needs to be further investigated. My vehicle was bought used in 2017 from a Nissan Dealership, it has never been in an accident with me as the owner, but my insurance company found an unreported accident from 2014 which could relate to the airbags not deploying and the frame bending so significantly from a rear end accident.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05
  • VIN: JN8AS5MT0DW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Air Bag warning light blinks 1 long and 5 short blinks. Scan shows code of B1018-00 which is passenger seat occupation seat sensor failure meaning even if seat is occupied, air bag will not deploy. Nissan has no coverage for this but earlier and later models did have recall coverage with only the 2013 year not recalled or just ignored. Let's get this handled please.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-15
  • VIN: JN8AS5MT3DW
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My car is a 2013 Rogue S with 118,000 miles. Two weeks ago I was on the I-95 at around 70 miles an hour and the car suddenly goes to 45 miles, despite my insistence to maintain my speed, I had to give up and pull over to the right ... I was able to go home at low speed and this experience traumatized me. After that I consulted a mechanic who told me without joking that these cars have the worst transmission and I should contact Nissan. I contacted Nissan customer service to explain the problem, they told me no and gave me a case number (52135330). After checking, it turns out that following repeated complaints Nissan would have increased the warranty up to 120,000 miles, but not for me!

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-21
  • VIN: JN8AS5MVXDW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: Purchased a 2013 Nissan Rogue with 95,000 miles on it back in the summer of 2021. currently has 102,00 miles. While travelling on the turnpike at 75 mph, the engine suddenly shut down and I began coasting until I stopped. Being in the left passing lane, I had to get over to the berm without getting hit by passing vehicles (2 nearly rear-ended me) because I was coasting slowly across two other lanes. Once stopped, the car would not restart. I started doing research as to why this happened. I needed a new part for the transmission per the Nissan Dealership. Nissan said I also needed an "engine cooler" for $1500 or it will happen again. This situation is a very well-known issue with this year of vehicle. It can happen with minimal mileage on it but usually when the tempos are in the 90's. Nissan knows about this because later models have these engine coolers installed. I could not afford $1500 and the extended warranty I purchased in 2021 did not cover it. This is a KNOWN issue and there needs to be a serious look at a Class-actions lawsuit. I paid for this part already and the car has been running fine.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-10
  • VIN: JN8AS5MVXDW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: KNOWN issue with engines overheating and the vehicle stopping. Purchased a 2014 Nissan Rogue with 95,000 miles on it back in the summer of 2021. It currently has 102,00 miles. Along with the purchase, I purchased the “extended” warranty for $2400 to cover the drive-train. All was running well until the temperatures starting climbing into the 90’s consistently. While travelling on the turnpike at 75 mph, the engine suddenly shut down and I began coasting until I stopped. I tried restarting the car but to no avail. I called a tow truck to tow me back home 35 miles. I started doing research as to why this happened. It’s two-sided. The good part was that it shut the engine down before it overheated. The bad part was that I did need a new part for the transmission per the Nissan Dealership. Good-bad there too. Though I had the extended warranty with Protective Asset Protection, I still had to pay the labor difference between what the Dealership charges and what the third-party would cover. That was a $400 difference which I discussed with the warranty company. They are in agreement with the Dealership on the amount of labor they would pay “per hour”. The difference is that “based on a national average”, they say the job would only take 9.7 hours X $150/hr. However, Nissan said it would take 12.3 to complete. The difference in time is where the $400 discrepancy comes in. Not sure how the warranty figures all that out, but that’s a scam in itself. I spoke to someone at Nissan Consumer Affairs and all she could do was escalate. While talking, she sent a message to the two gentlemen working on my case (Richard Garrett & Mark Avery) and they told her to tell me t have the Dealership call one of them and they can help. Sounded very positive. I contacted the Deale

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-25
  • VIN: JN8AS5MT3DW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Airbag light continuously blinks on dashboard, I took it into my local dealer and they said it is due to the passenger seat airbag sensor failure. This was not caused by user error, but I feel is a defect in the vehicle itself.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-25
  • VIN: JN8AS5MT3DW

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-24
  • VIN: JN8AS5MT6DW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The passenger seat sensor does not work anymore. So the passenger side airbag does not register anyone in the seat and is always turned off. The passenger side air bag will not fire if there is a crash. Confirmed by mechanic, the sensor failed and need to replace the entire seat to make it work. The light is showing that the airbag is off even when someone sits in the seat. Not sure how long ago this started.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-22
  • VIN: JN8AS5MV2DW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My 2013 Nissan rogue that we purchased in November keeps going into limp mode. It has happened several times. We’ve taken it to different shops and they all say it has a defective CVT transmission. It does not pull any codes and does not show that it’s overheating. It does make it dangerous for us and other cars on the road since it will happen on the freeway or as we are making a turn. We have been put in danger several times now. I can find several other years with the recall already. This problem is extremely dangerous when it all of a sudden doesn’t want to go or reduces speeds.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-18
  • VIN: JN8AS5MT2DW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,ENGINE
  • Summary: #1 I have been completely affected by the KNOWN defect in the Nissan transmissions with the first instance being my on the interstate, 4 hours from home with my child only, and we lost power while driving the interstate. The losing power issue has happened multiple times over the last 5 years and all that I can find online is that Nissan is aware and owners can buy something and have it added to the transmission....if we purchased the vehicle I think Nissan should at least be responsible for the issues with something that they are aware is an issue with the products they sell. I am now putting oil in the car every few weeks because of a leak that there is no explanation of how it happened and will cost a fortune to fix; and most recently I came out of work and when I went to get in my car the handle came off in my hand. I've researched and apparently this too is an issue with Nissan Rogues......Everytime I search for a recall there is nothing for the 2013 Rogue but there are for the ones years prior and after??? Whoever thinks that the perfect line came out in 2013 needs reevaluate their information!!!!

  • Summary: Transmission problem out of no where. Acceleration changed with a high reving/whining noise, with no power on the gas pedal while turning left, putting me and my family at risk. There were no warning lights and no warning whatsoever. There has been no recall with this type of CVT transmission as there should as it is a HIGH RISK of DANGER on the road! I can't even believe that Nissan won't even address the issue. Do not buy this vehicle! Auto parts stores do not even carry parts for this car to replace transmission or torqure converter you have to go to NISSAN dealership(That should tell you SOMETHING) and they won't address the safety the issue nor do they care. PLEASE recall this transmission issue. It is a defect all the way Very unsafe. The cost to replace the transmission through the dealer is a lot of money just to have it be defective again down the road is NOT WORTH your safety.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01
  • VIN: JN8AS5MV0DW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: Dangerous and terrifying vehicle malfunction. I have done extensive research on the vehicle and I am beyond upset that this has not been resolved for everyone who owns any Nissan vehicle experiencing this problem. While driving either on the highway or local streets after approximately 10-15 minutes of travel time at any speed there is a loud whining noise while accelerating and total power loss. My 2013 Nissan Rogue SV has almost complete power loss while driving just a few minutes at any speeds and especially during or immediately following highway travel. While driving with my 3 year old son in the back, operating at the posted speed, the vehicle suddenly loses power and the ability to maintain or increase speed, the accelerator can be fully pressed and there is little to no response. We have nearly been involved in multiple accidents with semi trucks, other cars/suvs, and objects due to this issue. This has created a massive risk for us while driving daily routes to school and work. I have read hundreds out of thousands of forum threads, YouTube comments, and tweet, etc.. and as a whole every single post has the same issue for many Nissan models but little to none have been fixed or addressed. This issue is extremely hazardous and life threatening, I am terrified to have my child in this vehicle for any reason. I am extremely disappointed in the fact that there has not been a single positive response from Nissan to repair this problem and save the lives of the people and there families who paid extremely high prices to buy these vehicles to only be very tragically affected by these problems after the purposely designed warranty is expired and then cost in the thousands for repairs are being handed to the owners. I am not going to stand by and allow this to go unaddressed until it causes serious harm or injury to my family and I. The thousands of people who have experienced this can agree. There is a manufacturing defect related to the CVT transmission system.

Negative 2013 Nissan Rogue car reviews

  1. Jairo Bernier 2024-11-29

I purchased my 2013 Nissan Rogue brand new with the expectation that it would last me a long time. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the car early on, such as shaking and jittering, which made me concerned about its safety. Despite bringing it to the dealership, they assured me that everything was normal. However, over time, I had to replace the AC compressor and eventually the engine. Recently, while on a trip, I encountered an issue with the cruise control and the car's speed. After checking the oil and transmission fluid, I brought it to the dealership and was informed that I needed a new transmission. It has been a frustrating experience, but I am hopeful that the dealership will be able to resolve the issue. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  2. Erich Strosin 2024-11-07

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2013 Rogue that I purchased in May of that year. Unfortunately, last week the malfunction light came on while I was driving in town and I had some trouble accelerating. I decided to take it to the nearest Nissan dealer and they determined that I needed a new transmission. It's been 8 days and the car is still being repaired, but I'm hopeful that it will be back on the road soon. While this experience has been frustrating, I'm still grateful for my Rogue and the memories it has helped me create. Thanks for listening!

  3. Zack Ullrich 2024-08-24

    The transmission failed prematurely.

  4. Jackson Renner 2024-08-06

I experienced a loss of power while driving on the highway, despite the transmission having less than 70k miles. Despite Nissan extending warranties on other models for the same issue, they were not able to provide any assistance. While the car has been reliable up to this point, the cost of a rebuilt transmission from dealers is over 3k. It is clear that this issue needs to be addressed by Nissan to ensure customer satisfaction and loyalty.

  5. Lon Lubowitz 2024-07-12

If you're considering purchasing a 2013 Rogue, it's important to note that the hood insulator (black cover under the hood) is missing. Nissan has stated that it is no longer necessary, but it's always better to be safe than sorry. We recommend checking under the hood and comparing it to a 2012 or 2014 model. If you have any concerns, don't hesitate to ask the dealer to explain why this safety feature is missing. We want to ensure that you have all the information you need to make an informed decision.

It's great to hear that you find the car reliable!

  2. Gardner Spinka 2024-11-25

Hi there! Just wanted to share that we recently purchased a 2013 model with only 17500 miles on it. We had a great experience driving it back from Tucson, AZ at 80mph and were pleasantly surprised to get 30mpg. :)

  3. Albin Stracke 2024-11-19

Pros:1. CV Tranny excellent, no constant shifting2. Plenty of power when needed at any speed.3. Drives comfortably, but shorterwheelbase of this class is a little bumpier.4. I get 28 mpg, my wife gets 24 overall. Gets over 30 on the highway at 60 mph.5. Door looking options are very nice.Cons:1. The Navigation system is totally useless. I had to buy a GPS. Cannot be set while moving, no MPH check, No useful trip record, no elevation, etc. etc. Of no use whatsoever.2. No option for power seats for passenger.3. Cargo space is small for class.4. Speedometer is analog only, no digital read.

  4. Rickie Kihn 2024-10-21

We chose the Nissan Rogue for two main reasons: its high safety and reliability ratings (why settle for less?) and its exceptionally comfortable seats. Our other SUV is a Honda CRV, which is slightly bigger and better suited for family trips. Although both cars are equally safe and reliable, the CRV has a slight edge in some small convenience areas (such as more cup holders, cargo space, and a more flexible interior), but we were willing to overlook these in favor of the Rogue's dream-like seating, which provides proper support for your lower back. Additionally, the Rogue includes variable speeds for the intermittent wipers, which the Honda lacks. We've been using this vehicle for about 8 months now, without a single issue or concern. It handles wonderfully and is our go-to vehicle for local trips. To make this vehicle even better, Nissan could consider shrinking or eliminating the front row console, which leaves you with nowhere to put a purse, and offer more interior color options beyond gray and black. Overall, we love it. I have very long legs, and there's plenty of legroom.

  5. Glennie Ernser 2024-08-20

The Nissan Rogue is an amazing vehicle that I love for its size and feel. With recent maintenance work, including changing the transfer case fluid, differential fluid, CVT fluid, installing new NGK Iridium IX spark plugs, and new coils, I have been able to achieve a decent mileage of 30mpg, even when driving gently. Prior to this work, the vehicle was only getting 18mpg. While the ride may be a bit rough, it is still an exceptional vehicle overall.
