2005 Chevrolet Cobalt problems

The Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The Cobalt replaced both the Cavalier and the Toyota-based Geo/Chevrolet Prizm as Chevrolet's compact car. The Cobalt was available as both a coupe and sedan, as well as a sport compact version dubbed the Cobalt SS. Like the Chevrolet HHR and the Saturn ION, it was based on the GM Delta platform.

A Pontiac version was sold in the United States and Mexico under the G5 name for 2007–2009. It was sold as the Pontiac G4 in Mexico for 2005–2006 and as the Pontiac G5 in Canada for its entire run (where it was briefly known as the Pontiac Pursuit and later Pontiac G5 Pursuit). The G5 replaced the Cavalier-related Pontiac Sunfire. While the Cobalt was available as a 2-door coupe and a 4-door sedan in all markets it was offered in, the G5 was only available as a coupé in the United States while a sedan version was sold alongside the coupé in Canada and Mexico.

As with their predecessors, all Cobalts and its Pontiac equivalents were manufactured at GM's plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and Lordstown, Ohio. The United States Environmental Protection Agency classified the Cobalt as a subcompact car.

2005 Chevrolet Cobalt recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt.

2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
  • Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
2014-04-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
  • Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
  • Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
2014-02-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GM’s recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.

Negative 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt car reviews

  1. Marcus Mills 2025-01-01

Although the car runs, it has had several issues such as cutting off while driving, CD player errors, melting emblem, peeling door handles, knocking sound in the back, and malfunctioning mirrors. Despite these challenges, I am grateful for the car's performance.

  2. Remington Harris 2024-11-04

The coupe gets great gas mileage, but I regret not getting the sedan. I have noticed that the rear window is quite small, making it difficult to check my blind spot when switching lanes. To improve safety, I recommend adding a small round mirror to the side mirror. I feel more comfortable driving on freeways when my girlfriend is with me to help check the traffic in the right lane.

  3. Carson Crooks 2024-09-15

I have owned my Chevy for 4 years and have unfortunately had numerous repairs. The A/C leaked all over my floor, the front struts had to be replaced twice, and the sunroof button has been replaced too many times to count. Additionally, the door lock on the driver's side had to be replaced, and there was a scary knocking noise coming from the rear end. The interior has not held up well, with paint chipping on the radio and door handles. I have also experienced issues with the key getting stuck after shifting or restarting the car, and the rotors have been problematic. Currently, I am experiencing issues with the steering, but unfortunately, Chevy has not been willing to address even the minor issues. Despite these challenges, I remain hopeful that a solution can be found.

I have extensive experience with import cars, having owned both an 02 Eclipse and an 03 Audi 1.8t. However, due to recent economic circumstances and the arrival of a new child, I needed to find a more practical option. After careful consideration, I decided to purchase an 05 Cobalt. Despite initial reservations, I am confident in my decision and stand by it. While some may criticize its appearance, I find it to be a reliable and efficient vehicle. In comparison to my previous cars, the Cobalt holds its own and meets my needs perfectly.

  5. Nicola Bernhard 2024-08-26

This is my wife's car and she puts less than the average yearly mileage on it. When she first bought the car, it was wonderful. In fact, I found myself sneaking it for little trips to the store. However, the reliability of the car has been a sour point. Here is a list of the items that have been fixed since it was new: Throttle body malfunctioned, sunroof has broken and come off track twice, every button in the interior has broken at least once, and the sunroof bezel has been replaced 4 times. There was also an electrical short in the trunk that killed the electrical system. Despite these issues, the car is fun to drive and has good gas mileage. However, we are considering trading it for a Honda Civic.

Positive 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt car reviews

  1. Wallace Gutkowski 2025-01-06

This car is a great choice for anyone looking for a powerful and reliable vehicle. Although I experienced some issues with the engine light coming on and off, I was able to address them and continue enjoying the car for many miles. While it may require premium gas and synthetic oil changes, the investment is well worth it for the performance and longevity of the vehicle. Overall, I highly recommend this car to anyone in the market for a high-quality ride.

  2. Eliseo Stroman 2025-01-01

I really appreciate it! Your car is fantastic. I've heard it being called the 'Little Vette' and it definitely lives up to the name. I'm so glad you're extremely happy with your Cobalt :>)

  3. Orion Wisozk 2024-11-25

Surprising attributes for a compact car from GM. The ride is solid and firm without any harshness, and it's surprisingly quiet - even quieter than my wife's Buick LeSabre. The car has reasonable power and gets an impressive 35 MPG on the highway. I'm currently getting around 27.4 MPG driving around town (according to the trip computer). While I would like to have the S/C engine in this car, I don't want the stiff suspension and sky-high spoiler.

  4. Kip Hamill 2024-08-13

I have mostly driven larger vehicles, except for my Corvettes. However, I needed a car that was more gas economical for my long-distance driving. My 19-year-old son suggested the Cobalt, and after test driving it, I was impressed by the ride. Compared to the larger vehicles I've owned in the past, the Cobalt handled well and had a solid feel with good pick-up for a 4-cylinder engine. I am very happy with my new Cobalt and grateful to my son for suggesting it, even though he would have preferred the SS. Overall, it's a great car for the money. Chevrolet deserves ten stars for this one!

  5. Dejon Runte 2024-07-29

This car is great! For a small car, it has a lot of room. You can actually sit comfortably in the back seat! The sound system is top-notch, and the MP3 player is an added bonus. This car handles great and has a lot of pickup. If you want a smaller car with room and speed, choose the Cobalt.
