2007 Chevrolet Cobalt problems
The Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The Cobalt replaced both the Cavalier and the Toyota-based Geo/Chevrolet Prizm as Chevrolet's compact car. The Cobalt was available as both a coupe and sedan, as well as a sport compact version dubbed the Cobalt SS. Like the Chevrolet HHR and the Saturn ION, it was based on the GM Delta platform.
A Pontiac version was sold in the United States and Mexico under the G5 name for 2007–2009. It was sold as the Pontiac G4 in Mexico for 2005–2006 and as the Pontiac G5 in Canada for its entire run (where it was briefly known as the Pontiac Pursuit and later Pontiac G5 Pursuit). The G5 replaced the Cavalier-related Pontiac Sunfire. While the Cobalt was available as a 2-door coupe and a 4-door sedan in all markets it was offered in, the G5 was only available as a coupé in the United States while a sedan version was sold alongside the coupé in Canada and Mexico.
As with their predecessors, all Cobalts and its Pontiac equivalents were manufactured at GM's plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and Lordstown, Ohio. The United States Environmental Protection Agency classified the Cobalt as a subcompact car.

Common 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt problems
The 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the power steering system, fuel system, and engine.
- Fuel System Issues: The fuel system issues show up on many Cobalt models at around 100,000 miles. The fuel pump, tank, and fuel neck are all prone to cracking, leading to leaks. Replacing the parts as they wear out can cost around $1,200.
- Stalling Engines: Stalling engines are another common complaint at around 75,000 miles. The main engine computer, called the power control module, fails easily and replacing it costs roughly $900.
- Faulty Power Steering Motor: The 2007 Cobalt was part of a recall by GM due to a faulty power steering motor. The recall notice was sent to owners between March 29, 2010, and November 2010. The remedy is to replace the electric power steering motor free of charge.
- Fuel Pump Module Recall: General Motors is recalling certain model year 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt and Saturn Ion vehicles and model year 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5 and Saturn Ion vehicles. The plastic supply or return port on the modular reservoir assembly may crack, causing fuel to leak from the area. This could lead to vehicle performance issues and an increased risk of a fire.
- Key Stuck in the Ignition: The 2007 Cobalt has had issues with the key getting stuck in the ignition after parking the car. This was an issue with a faulty automatic transmission shifter in the floor console.
- Grinding Transmission: The 2008 Cobalt, which inherited most of the problems from 2005 and 2006, has had complaints about a grinding transmission when shifting. The issue happens at low mileage and is caused by low fluid transmission, contaminated transmission fluid, cracked or chipped gear, and faulty synchronizer.
- Wiring Problems: Some owners have reported wiring problems with the 2007 Cobalt, causing power steering to stop working, lights such as security and airbag to go on, and all gauges to go crazy with the tranny switch flickering.
These problems can significantly impact the reliability and safety of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and potential buyers should be aware of these issues before making a purchase decision.

The seats lack support and the cabin feels cramped. Although quick, the Cobalt's engine is noisy and returns paltry fuel economy.

- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The fuel pump failed and had began leaking profusely. The car was brought to the Chevy dealership where I was told it would be fixed under special coverage 12191. Chevy had tried an aftermarket part to fix but it would not seal properly and continued to leak. I got in contact with General Motors who said a new part had been ordered, a week later they told me there was no new part as they discontinued it. They are now saying that it isn’t their responsibility to fix the car due to its mileage even though special coverage 12191 specifically states no expiration due to mileage. They are offering me a credit towards a down payment which I do not want as I am not interested in having a new car payment, i want my car repaired or to be compensated once they total it out. This is my daily driver car and I have been without it for four months while GM shoves me around and refuses to deliver on their failed product. Please help.

2007 Chevrolet Cobalt recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt.
- Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
- Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
- Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
- Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
- Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GMs recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.

For the money, power, build quality, and fuel economy, this vehicle is just as good, if not better, than any import. Kudos to GM for creating such a great car. As a former owner of Honda, BMW, and Mercedes, I can honestly say that GM has done an excellent job. They are truly a leader in the entry-level market.

I bought my 2007 Cobalt LS coupe in September of 2006 and I absolutely love it! The performance for the price ($12850) is simply amazing. The handling is also great. I can take corners with ease and the tires never slip (not even a squeak). The suspension is refined and the stock engine (148 hp) is fairly powerful, making for an incredible back road driving experience, especially with the easy-to-use 5-speed transmission! And if you're looking for something more than stock, don't worry, GM offers plenty of upgrades for this car. In fact, this car is probably one of the best compact cars in America. Aftermarket companies are already excited about it!

I've been driving my Chevy Cobalt for over 10 years now, and I still love it! Despite what everyone else said, I'm glad I went with this car. Meanwhile, my friends have gone through multiple Hondas and are already looking forward to their next upgrade.

We bought this car used from a dealer 3 years ago and have never had a problem with it. We wanted to take a nice trip to the Keys for 2 days, so we decided to go with my girlfriend's Chevy Cobalt. I have to say, I was so impressed with the performance of this little car. It had no problem going 80 miles per hour. I was pushing it and laughing. My girlfriend told me to take it easy on her baby, so I responded by saying, 'Don't worry, Babe, Besty is doing fine.' Unfortunately, my girlfriend got into a car accident a couple of weeks ago with a pickup truck on her way to work and totaled Besty. We only had PIP insurance on it. My girlfriend is doing fine, but she's so sad about the car. She wants the same car because of its reliability. We're trying to save up to get another one.

I'm so glad you're considering the base model 07 Cobalt! This car really impressed me with its performance and handling, especially on the curvy roads where I live. Plus, the fuel economy is outstanding at 30 M+PG. Another great feature is the spacious trunk - I was pleasantly surprised by how much room there was. And as someone who's 6 feet tall, I was happy to find that there was enough room for me to sit comfortably behind the wheel. One interesting detail I noticed is that the battery is located in the trunk.

I needed a reliable car to send my daughter off to college, and we searched until we found one with all the features she wanted. Despite the car having 37,000 miles on it and the bumper to bumper warranty having just expired, my daughter experienced a power steering failure while driving from Nashville. Fortunately, she was not in a turn when it happened. Upon researching the issue, I discovered that this is a widespread problem with Cobalts. I urge anyone considering purchasing a Cobalt to thoroughly research this issue before making a decision. It is disappointing that the dealership and GM have not been more sympathetic to our situation.

This car is an excellent choice for a first car. It reliably gets you from point A to point B. However, it may not be worth investing too much money into the car as it may have some maintenance issues.

Hi there! I noticed that you have an 07 SS Coupe and drive a lot. It's a shame to hear that your gas mileage has been less than desirable, with a maximum of 27mpg on the highway. I can imagine that it must have been quite a relief to have an extended warranty when your transmission needed to be replaced at 40,500 miles. On the bright side, the styling of the car is great and it looks hot in black, which is probably why you get a lot of looks from people. I do agree that replacing the tires can be expensive and the SS is quite low to the ground, which can make it difficult to clear most speed bumps without scraping. Unless you can get a great deal on this car, it might be worth considering your options. Let me know if you have any questions!

At first, the car seemed like a great deal for the price. Unfortunately, things went downhill as soon as I paid for it. The driver side door handle broke on the first day, and soon after, the inside one did too. A month later, a hole in the flex pipe made the car extremely loud. The mechanic shop said the part would cost $1,000, which was a lot. With that came a ton of other problems. In hindsight, I wish I had looked around a little more instead of falling for the sporty body style. If you have kids in car seats, it can be a nightmare. I hope this helps others make a more informed decision.

I purchased this car used with 10k miles and loved it at first. However, over time it revealed its true colors. I have had to replace the wheel bearings, sway bars, control arms, and bushings three times. The second time the repair was under warranty, but the first and third were quite expensive. Additionally, the inside door handles have peeled. I have just paid it off and am ready to get rid of this car. I have learned my lesson and Chevy won't be getting my business again.
