Chevrolet Cobalt 2006 problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The Cobalt replaced both the Cavalier and the Toyota-based Geo/Chevrolet Prizm as Chevrolet's compact car. The Cobalt was available as both a coupe and sedan, as well as a sport compact version dubbed the Cobalt SS. Like the Chevrolet HHR and the Saturn ION, it was based on the GM Delta platform.

A Pontiac version was sold in the United States and Mexico under the G5 name for 2007–2009. It was sold as the Pontiac G4 in Mexico for 2005–2006 and as the Pontiac G5 in Canada for its entire run (where it was briefly known as the Pontiac Pursuit and later Pontiac G5 Pursuit). The G5 replaced the Cavalier-related Pontiac Sunfire. While the Cobalt was available as a 2-door coupe and a 4-door sedan in all markets it was offered in, the G5 was only available as a coupé in the United States while a sedan version was sold alongside the coupé in Canada and Mexico.

As with their predecessors, all Cobalts and its Pontiac equivalents were manufactured at GM's plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and Lordstown, Ohio. The United States Environmental Protection Agency classified the Cobalt as a subcompact car.

Common Chevrolet Cobalt 2006 problems

The Chevrolet Cobalt, produced from 2005 to 2010, has been known to have several common problems that have been reported by real owners. Here are the three most common issues along with their details:

  • Ignition Key Stuck: Many Chevrolet Cobalt owners have experienced the ignition key getting stuck in the car's ignition cylinder. This issue seems to crop up around 84,000 miles and costs anywhere from $88 to $111 to fix. A small button or plunger near the steering column was released by GM as a fix for this issue, and a recall was also issued.
  • Engine Misfire: The second most common issue that you'll find on a Chevy Cobalt is an engine misfire. This issue can be found in 2005-2010 Cobalts and owners have reported that it crops up around 107,000 miles. Reports from owners state that the car's engine cuts off randomly, sometimes when slowing down or at a stop light/sign. The reported fix for this issue is to replace the ignition coil, which could cost an average of $353 to $426.
  • Broken Timing Chain: The third most common Chevy Cobalt issue has to do with a broken timing chain. Unlike the other two issues, which are easy fixes, this issue has required the entire cylinder head and timing chain to be replaced in some cases. The main culprit has to do with a faulty timing chain tensioner, which can fail at around 108,000 miles. Many Cobalt owners reported spending around $1,500 to $2,000 for the fix. Unfortunately, this large issue tends to show up every Cobalt model year – 2005-2011.

In addition to these three issues, the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt has been reported to have problems with the ignition key getting stuck in the ignition after parking the car, and the power steering going off at random times. The 2007 model also inherited most of the problems from 2005 and 2006, including issues with the power steering system and engine problems that can cause the vehicle to lose power while driving.

The 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt, while having fewer complaints than the previous years, still had issues with the grinding transmission when shifting and the key being able to be removed from the ignition even when in the OFF position. This puts the vehicle at risk of rolling away if the parking brake isn't engaged.

It is important to note that General Motors recalled 1.6 million vehicles in February 2014 due to a faulty ignition switch that has been linked to the deaths of 13 people. This defect may have been known by the company for over a decade, and a federal case against GM's handling of the recall has left the door open for owners to sue the automaker for economic losses if they want.

STEERING,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-26
  • VIN: 1G1AL15F767
  • Components: STEERING,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: My Power Steering is going out and then coming back in to use. Today is the second time it has happened. It went out just now, I reversed down the road to my house, and turn it off once I crank it again the steering is back. I haven’t gotten any pictures of it as I’m more worried about making it back to my house so I’m not in the road but will be more than happy to get a picture if this happens again. I’m also not sure which ADAS this connects to so I put cruise control.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-24
  • VIN: 1G1AK55F167
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: The car idles very low when stopped and sputters/putters like it's going to die. It has now actually died on me twice while driving, luckily when you put it in park and turn the car off and back on it starts right back up but you can see how this is a severe safety hazard. The first time it died I was stopped in the turning lane waiting on traffic to go by so I could turn left (this is the busiest street in town) I go to start turning left the car just shuts off mid turn crossing the other lane of the street, luckily I didn't get hit by oncoming traffic and was able to coast onto the side street that I was turning on and pull over and turn the car off and back on and drive it home. I took it to the mechanic and he can't figure out what's wrong with it so he gives it a tune up and now the check engine light won't turn off...fast forward to today it dies again at a stop sign with my [XXX] in the car. It is ESPECIALLY bad if you have the AC on it seems like it effects the electrical like the car is going to shut off when I am stopped and the ac is running, so I turned off the ac and it was still sputtering when I would stop but didn't die again. There is an entire thread of people with the same issue as me: [XXX] this car needs recalled it is a death trap. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-06
  • VIN: 1G1AL55F767
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I took the vehicle in for a recall repair to the ignition. After the repair, my key did not open my trunk. This is a huge problem because the battery is located in the trunk. You need power to open the trunk without a key. If your battery fails, you have no way to access it for repairs. I e-mailed the dealer who responded by advising me to contact the service manager. I did this. The service manager told me they only rekey the ignition to the original key during a recall. If this is true, they key should unlock the trunk. We were able to unlock the trunk before the recall repairs. The service manager told me there was nothing he could do. I have e-mailed the dealer again but have recieved no answer.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-08-05
  • VIN: 1G1AK15F967
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Before I get into all of it there has never been an accident not yet at least. I do everything I can to try an stop that from happening, (but accidents do happen) only because I know my car could kill on me so I’m extra careful. 1) After I get gas I’m my car the car won’t start right away. I have to restart it a couple times an step in the gas an rev up wasting the gas I just put in to get it to start. 2) When I stop an start to pull out of somewhere on to a main road the car will just die on me so I’m stuck pulling out in traffic trying to get my car to start again. It’s when I come to a stop an pull out it just kills on me. So I have to make sure no one else is coming an I have enough time to be able to restart it otherwise I’m worried when I pull out of anywhere or stop an go that another car will smack into me because my car just died on me in the middle of the road/ pulling out an crossing lanes. SUPER SCARY! 3) Let get into the next issue so anytime I run my ac my car starts to do this jumping thing like it wants to kill on me not to mention it has killed on me with the ac on (I live in Louisiana an it’s too hot not to have ac plus I have 3 kids) what’s sad is the ac works fine but if you want the car to maybe not die then turn it off an you have a better chance of it not killing off on you but not always a guarantee. So ill run it for second to try an cool down so I’m not drenched in sweat but I have no other choice to turn it off so the car doesn’t just die on me. This refers back to the 2nd problem I make sure it’s off anytime I pull out of anywhere thinking that would help it from killing on me while trying to get out of anywhere but it doesn’t but I can tell you If the ac is on when I pull out when I start to go it dies right as I’m in the middle of the road every time never fails. Mechanics have replaced parts trying to fix the issue, but it still happens I can’t keep buying/fixing things for nada, ongoing problems since buying.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-01
  • VIN: 1G1AM18B767
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: The problem that sent it to a different mechanic than the chevy dealer where it came from after a month and 900.00 bill for 550.00 ecm and diagnostic test they did without my permission, there labor for the test and ecm was a total of 900.00. Plus claimed it was throwing a code for a peddle that it needed. We just put a brand new peddle and brand new throttle body on it, it was idled to high, so reason for them getting it was to get the old ecm and new throttle sinked up to reduce the idle , at the time of it leaving me it started and ran just idle to high. Throwing no codes. They got it, claim it wouldn't start so did a diagnostic claimed it needed a new peddle. I said I'm coming to get it, they didn't tell me at any time I couldn't drive it home. I left there lot and pulled about 150 feet off the side of road because it wouldn't shift. Called them , botched did no good. Called same tow truck to tow it home. Got here it was idled normal but was throwing a different codes, I turned the car off it wouldn't stop running for about 3 to 4 minutes, then it died. I had it towed to different mechanic for the ignition to be replaced. He said it was throwing a couple codes still ignition not fixed yet, and it ran for about 15 minutes after shutting off the key. At no time here or at the new place did it throw a code for a defective peddle. So now it's be gone for 2 months , new ecm , new throttle body ,new peddle, idle is fixed and car runs but won't shift. Codes its throwing is now are just needing coil on #4 checked and throttle position sensor adjusted. So far that's it. 2 months later. Still not ready for pick up.

Chevrolet Cobalt 2006 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the Chevrolet Cobalt 2006.

2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
  • Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
2014-04-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
  • Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
  • Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
2014-02-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GM’s recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.

Negative Chevrolet Cobalt 2006 car reviews

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with this car. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with it, like my brakes squeaking and the airbag light coming on for no reason. Also, the seats stain easily and the windows don't always roll down smoothly. On top of that, the driver's side door handle fell off and my dome light won't stay in place. However, I'm sure there are people who have had better experiences with this car. Just wanted to share my thoughts!

  2. Dean Christiansen 2024-10-01

The '06 Cobalt was the first car I bought. However, it has been extremely disappointing. Within the first month of owning it, I had to take it in twice. Once because the wiring on the safety harness had been chewed by rodents at either the dealership or a GM facility and had remained undetected until my check engine light went on a couple of weeks after I brought it home. The second time, my ignition stuck and it had to be towed to replace the gear shift in the floor. Since then, I've had to replace the fuel sensor and the fuel pump. Other repairs are still pending. The car has less than 8000 miles on it. Despite these issues, I would advise anyone thinking about buying one to research carefully.

I hope you're doing well! When I first bought this car, I really liked it. However, as time went on, a few things started to happen. I had to replace the sunroof, shift knob, and vacuum pump in the gas tank because the car would idle rough.

  4. Lambert Bernier 2024-08-18

I purchased my car brand new in 2006, and although I had fair credit at the time, I made the decision to go for a high interest rate. The car was excellent when I first purchased it, but unfortunately, I started experiencing major problems at 110,000 miles. Despite taking it to the dealership and Sears for servicing, I had to replace the transmission flush, fuel system, steering, and belt due to recalls, as well as three rotors and other parts over time. Now, with 174,500 miles on the clock, the engine did not pass the compression check and the dealership has recommended a new engine at a cost of $3,100. Despite still owing money, I am confident in my decision to invest in a new engine and look forward to many more years of reliable driving.

I purchased this car on July 3rd '06, and unfortunately, it has spent most of its time in the shop since then. However, I can confidently say that this car does not meet my expectations for quality. On the first day of ownership, the door lock broke, and the temperature gauge malfunctioned. Despite having the seat repaired multiple times, the car has continued to have issues. As a result of my experience, I have decided not to purchase another American-made car. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  1. Emmet Reinger 2024-11-26

I love my Cobalt because it gets great gas mileage. However, I have had some issues with it. I had to replace my steering column twice and the control arms on both sides, which caused problems with my brakes and tires. Unfortunately, the dealership initially refused to fix them, but with persistence, the issues were resolved. It's been a month since then, but the noise has returned. Although I've heard that the Cobalt is known for front end issues, I still enjoy my car overall when it's fixed.

  2. Darien King 2024-11-25

This is the most enjoyable I've had with four wheels since 1969. It goes, stops, and turns with great feel and precision. Getting 20 MPG in stop-and-go commutes and 34 MPG on a 200-mile freeway trek doesn't hurt my feelings either. It's the best value for your money, hands down.

  3. Art Funk 2024-11-25

This car is perfect for commuters who enjoy the feel of a sports sedan. Despite the engine's output of 171HP, the fuel mileage is impressive. The handling is sharp and the suspension absorbs bumps well. I'm excited to drive this small Chevy and share my experience with my friends. While the interior is cozy, it's important to keep in mind that this is a smaller vehicle designed for the economical driver who values performance. Overall, it's a great choice for those seeking a sports sedan in this class.

  4. Nicholas Ritchie 2024-11-22

I'm so glad to hear that you've had an amazing experience with this car! It's fast, fun to drive, and the stylish look and feel is amazing. I'm surprised that more people haven't purchased this vehicle, especially considering how much driving satisfaction it delivers.

  5. Clair Nienow 2024-11-06

I recently purchased this car and I'm thrilled to know that it's not a common sight on the road. I invested $1200 in aftermarket parts and now I can go from 0 to 60 in just 5.4 seconds! The interior is impressive and offers great value for the price. Additionally, the safety ratings are quite good. Kudos to GM for discontinuing the Cavalier and introducing something new and exciting to the market. The horsepower numbers are underrated, as the car is achieving 215-225 horsepower to the wheels! Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase and would definitely buy it again if given the choice. Thanks GM! It's worth noting that GM is releasing a plethora of aftermarket parts that won't void your warranty.
