2009 Chevrolet Cobalt problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The Cobalt replaced both the Cavalier and the Toyota-based Geo/Chevrolet Prizm as Chevrolet's compact car. The Cobalt was available as both a coupe and sedan, as well as a sport compact version dubbed the Cobalt SS. Like the Chevrolet HHR and the Saturn ION, it was based on the GM Delta platform.

A Pontiac version was sold in the United States and Mexico under the G5 name for 2007–2009. It was sold as the Pontiac G4 in Mexico for 2005–2006 and as the Pontiac G5 in Canada for its entire run (where it was briefly known as the Pontiac Pursuit and later Pontiac G5 Pursuit). The G5 replaced the Cavalier-related Pontiac Sunfire. While the Cobalt was available as a 2-door coupe and a 4-door sedan in all markets it was offered in, the G5 was only available as a coupé in the United States while a sedan version was sold alongside the coupé in Canada and Mexico.

As with their predecessors, all Cobalts and its Pontiac equivalents were manufactured at GM's plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and Lordstown, Ohio. The United States Environmental Protection Agency classified the Cobalt as a subcompact car.

Common 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt problems

The 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the issues is the loss of power steering assist, which can occur suddenly at any time while driving. This problem affects the 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007-2010 Pontiac G5 vehicles equipped with electric power steering. If power steering assist is lost, it would require greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the electric power steering motor free of charge for this issue.

Another problem reported is the key getting stuck in the ignition. This issue was prevalent in the 2005-2008 Chevrolet Cobalt models, where the key would get stuck in the ignition after parking the car. This problem was due to a faulty automatic transmission shifter in the floor console.

The 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt had over 1,000 complaints, with the most common complaint being the grinding transmission when shifting. The transmission grinds can be caused by low fluid transmission, contaminated transmission fluid, cracked or chipped gear, and faulty synchronizer. Additionally, the key stuck in the ignition issue was also present with the 2008 Cobalt, and there was a related issue where the key could be removed from the ignition even when in the OFF position, putting the vehicle at risk of rolling away if the parking brake isn't engaged.

The 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt also had recalls, including a recall for the key being able to be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position. This issue increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries if the vehicle could roll away.

In summary, the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt has several common problems, including loss of power steering assist, the key getting stuck in the ignition, grinding transmission when shifting, and recalls for the key being able to be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position. These issues can increase the risk of a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries, requiring dealers to replace the electric power steering motor and ignition cylinder free of charge.

2009 Chevrolet Cobalt engine

Is Chevy Cobalt 2009 a good car?

Acceleration is impressive -- Chevrolet says the SS will sprint from zero to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds -- and braking and handling are top-notch. The Cobalt SS may not be the most refined sport compact on the market, but we can't argue with its performance, which rivals that of pint-sized powerhouses like the Mazdaspeed 3.

What are common problems with 2009 Chevy Cobalt?

Problems found on the 2009 Cobalt include keys stuck in the ignition, excessive fuel smells, and failed sensors. Keys getting stuck in the ignition are the most common complaint from owners at around 50,000 miles. Replacing the ignition cylinder solves the problem, and costs around $250.

But, when I turn my key into the off position, my car tried starting by itself. It was scary. It was checked by a mechanic, prior to this happening, because the car was hard to start. The mechanic told me to find out if there is a recall. However, I did some research and there was a recall on the ignition switch and fuel pump. The ignition switch was faulty causing the car to turn off while moving and two people died as a result. I entered the VIN # and it didn't show any recalls.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-17
  • VIN: 1G1AS58HX97
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My Cobalt 2009 has gas leaking in front of the back driver's side wheel. This has been report it seems by several people online that I have found. Why can not GM cover this repair in a recall? I've tried to call around for pricing but most garage's won't give me a quote over the phone. The best I got was that this would cost around 2000-3000 for replacement. But it seemed like a shot in the dark on the pricing. I called the local dealership near me in Darian Connecticut, and was told that this was not covered under any recall. Corrosion protection coverage expired in 2019 from GMs site. But why would a fuel line be made of a metal that rust and is near the hot exhaust requiring a heatshield on the pipes? Aftermarket repairs seems to be either Braided Stainless Steel around Nylon, or Some Nickel/Copper Piping using compression fittings that plumbers use.

2009 Chevrolet Cobalt recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt.

2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
  • Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
2014-04-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
  • Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
  • Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.

  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GM’s recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.

  1. Demarco Welch 2024-11-21

At the Company I work for, we have experienced some issues with our four new 2009 Lt Cobalt cars. Specifically, we have had to replace the steering column at around 7k to 10k miles, which has caused some problems with the power steering. This has made turning into parking spots quite difficult. Additionally, we have noticed some minor issues such as the gear indicator light not working and the headrest being in an awkward position. We understand that these issues can be frustrating, and we are working to address them as quickly as possible.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in November of 2008, and at the time, it was the most affordable option for me. However, I've been pleasantly surprised with how much I've enjoyed it! The drive is smooth and comfortable, and while it's not the most exciting car out there, it gets the job done. The radio is decent, and the controls are easy to use. I've found that the front seats are comfortable enough to sit in for a few hours at a time, which is great for longer drives. Plus, even though it's a compact car, it has enough power to pass semi-trucks on the highway. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase!

After test driving several models including the Fit, Yaris, Soul, G5, and Focus, I finally found a manual Cobalt available during week one of cash for clunkers. I was pleasantly surprised by its fuel economy, which was better than the other models I had tried. While the G5 had more features for the price, it was sold out by day 4. The Cobalt may not have all the bells and whistles, but it does come with a trip computer, On Star, and XM radio. With rebates, I was able to purchase it for only 8,100 after the 4,500 cash for clunkers discount. For that kind of money, I can definitely overlook the missing features. I will keep you updated on its real-world mileage and wear and tear in future posts.

I love this car! It's such an upgrade from my previous 2008 Dodge Caliber. Even after an accident, I was able to fix it myself for only $500 and it still runs just as great as before. The manual transmission makes driving so much more fun, especially when racing others. Plus, the fuel economy is fantastic - I only need to fill up once every two weeks for just $45. I wouldn't trade this car for anything!

Positive 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt car reviews

This car is an absolute joy to drive. The engine power is exceptional and the handling is incredibly tight. The brakes are very responsive and the sound system is top-notch. While the fuel tank is a bit small at only 13 gallons, I am confident that the fuel economy will improve after the break-in period. However, the interior design could use some improvement as there is too much cheap-looking plastic. Additionally, I was disappointed to discover that the underhood liner was missing upon arriving home with my new car. Despite going through multiple quality control checks and a dealership new car PDI, this issue was not caught. I am eager to see how the dealership will handle this problem, but overall I am still very pleased with my purchase.

I purchased my SS Cobalt without test driving it, as there were only 5 SS' available in every state west of the Mississippi. After reading my favorite car magazines, Road and Track and Motor Trend, and even taking a ride around the Nurburgring track with a professional driver in the rain, I was convinced that this was the car for me. The lap times were just above 8 minutes, and the driver was thoroughly impressed with what the car was capable of. I wanted to support the economy while also owning a true muscle car that could match the numbers of a Buick GS 455, and get 2 to 3 times the mileage. With 4500 miles on the car, the seats are still perfect and my 90-year-old mother can ride in the passenger seat for 8 hours without any pain. It's also incredibly fast, like a Corvette!

Your daughter made an excellent choice with this car! I'm glad to hear that you had a comfortable and enjoyable 3200 mile trip. The front seats sound very comfortable and it's great to hear that there is plenty of room in the back seat. The car's fuel efficiency is impressive, averaging 38 mpg on your trip. The car's handling and tightness, along with the quiet cabin, make for a smooth and enjoyable ride. The 5 spd transmission and light clutch sound like they make for effortless shifting. The gauges and controls are well laid out and easy to read, and it's great to hear that the AC worked well even in the extreme desert heat. Overall, this is a fantastic car that I would highly recommend to anyone!

I looked at a few different cars in this class and ended up buying a great Cobalt XFE. Although the interior door panels are in need of new materials and a better design, the chrome door handle and storage are great. However, the plastic is so rough you can grate cheese on it, which is a bit of a downside. That being said, the Cobalt is an excellent car overall. I also considered an 09 Corolla, but the interior looked extremely cheap and was full of bad plastics and poor fitting panels. The cost of the Corolla 5 speed was 14,500 rock bottom price, whereas the Cobalt with all the same equipment plus OnStar and XM radio was only $11,000 before tax. Plus, the Cobalt is getting 39 mpg in mixed driving and it's not even broken in yet. In my opinion, the Cobalt is definitely the way to go.

I'm so glad to hear about your positive experience with your 2009 car! It's great to know that even with 155,000 miles, it still runs smoothly and gets an impressive 37 mpg. It's also reassuring to hear that the only issue you had was a minor gas line leak, which was easily fixed for just $100. It's clear that you take good care of your car by getting regular high-mileage oil changes and maintaining the fluids. Overall, it sounds like you made a fantastic purchase for only $3,000. Thank you for sharing your experience!
