Chevrolet Cobalt problems

The Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The Cobalt replaced both the Cavalier and the Toyota-based Geo/Chevrolet Prizm as Chevrolet's compact car. The Cobalt was available as both a coupe and sedan, as well as a sport compact version dubbed the Cobalt SS. Like the Chevrolet HHR and the Saturn ION, it was based on the GM Delta platform.

A Pontiac version was sold in the United States and Mexico under the G5 name for 2007–2009. It was sold as the Pontiac G4 in Mexico for 2005–2006 and as the Pontiac G5 in Canada for its entire run (where it was briefly known as the Pontiac Pursuit and later Pontiac G5 Pursuit). The G5 replaced the Cavalier-related Pontiac Sunfire. While the Cobalt was available as a 2-door coupe and a 4-door sedan in all markets it was offered in, the G5 was only available as a coupé in the United States while a sedan version was sold alongside the coupé in Canada and Mexico.

As with their predecessors, all Cobalts and its Pontiac equivalents were manufactured at GM's plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and Lordstown, Ohio. The United States Environmental Protection Agency classified the Cobalt as a subcompact car.

Common Chevrolet Cobalt problems

The Chevrolet Cobalt, produced from 2005 to 2010, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are the details of the most frequently reported issues:

  • Ignition Key Stuck Due to Failed Shifter: This issue affects 2005-2010 Cobalts, with 302 owners reporting that their keys get intermittently stuck in the car's ignition cylinder.
  • Check Engine Light and Misfire Due to Ignition Module/Coil Failure: This problem is the second most common issue found in 2005-2010 Cobalts. The car's engine cuts off randomly, sometimes when slowing down or at a stop light/sign. The reported fix for this issue is to replace the ignition coil, which could cost an average of $353 to $426.
  • Broken Timing Chain: This issue has affected all Cobalt model years from 2005 to 2011. The main culprit is a faulty timing chain tensioner, which can fail around 108,000 miles. Many Cobalt owners reported spending around $1,500 to $2,000 for the fix.
  • Engine Misfire: This issue can be found in 2005-2010 Cobalts and tends to crop up around 107,000 miles. Reports from owners state that the car's engine cuts off randomly, sometimes when slowing down or at a stop light/sign. The reported fix for this issue is to replace the ignition coil, which could cost an average of $353 to $426.
  • Power Steering Issues: The 2005 Cobalt had over 1,000 complaints, 6 recalls, and the notorious "Avoid Like the Plague" designation. Its most prominent issue is with its electrical power steering system. According to numerous reports, drivers have lost the car's power steering, which can be a scary experience. In some cases, the steering becomes stiff and won't turn in any direction. It's such a widespread issue that GM sent a recall notice for the 2005-2010 Chevy Cobalt due to a faulty power steering motor.
  • Grinding Transmission When Shifting: The 2008 Chevy Cobalt had over 1,000 complaints and 5 recalls. The most common complaint is the grinding transmission when shifting. Several causes of the transmission grinds include low fluid transmission, contaminated transmission fluid, cracked or chipped gear, and faulty synchronizer. According to the reports, the issue happens at low mileage too.

These issues have contributed to the Chevrolet Cobalt's overall reliability rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars from Repair Pal, but potential buyers should be aware of these common problems before purchasing a used Cobalt.

  • Summary: The car idles very low when stopped and sputters/putters like it's going to die. It has now actually died on me twice while driving, luckily when you put it in park and turn the car off and back on it starts right back up but you can see how this is a severe safety hazard. The first time it died I was stopped in the turning lane waiting on traffic to go by so I could turn left (this is the busiest street in town) I go to start turning left the car just shuts off mid turn crossing the other lane of the street, luckily I didn't get hit by oncoming traffic and was able to coast onto the side street that I was turning on and pull over and turn the car off and back on and drive it home. I took it to the mechanic and he can't figure out what's wrong with it so he gives it a tune up and now the check engine light won't turn off...fast forward to today it dies again at a stop sign with my [XXX] in the car. It is ESPECIALLY bad if you have the AC on it seems like it effects the electrical like the car is going to shut off when I am stopped and the ac is running, so I turned off the ac and it was still sputtering when I would stop but didn't die again. There is an entire thread of people with the same issue as me: [XXX] this car needs recalled it is a death trap. • Date Complaint: 2024-05-23
  • VIN: 1G1AL58F987
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: When the driver's side window on my 2008 Chevy Cobalt is fully open/down, the "Service air bag" warning light comes on. This seems to be the exact same issue that resulted in a recall on the 2010 model (NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V500000). When I called Chevrolet corporate customer service regarding this, they explained the model years were manufactured the same, and the reason my year did not have a recall could be that there were not enough reported complaints on it. It is very concerning, since as my dealer indicated, the airbag system seems to be disabled when in this condition. I put today's date as the when the incident occurred, but it's been a condition for the last few years.

  • Model: Chevrolet Cobalt 2010
  • Report Received Date: 2015-08-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt vehicles manufactured January 4, 2010, to June 23, 2010. The affected vehicles may be equipped with an improperly routed Side-Impact Sensor (SIS) wiring harness in the driver side front door. The misrouted wiring harness could cause an electrical short that disables the driver side curtain air bag.
  • Consequence: A disabled driver side roof-rail air bag will not deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of that air bag, increasing the risk of injury to the driver.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the sensor's wiring in the driver's door and make repairs as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on September 8, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 15075.
  • Model: Chevrolet Cobalt 2007
  • Report Received Date: 2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
  • Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).

Latest negative Chevrolet Cobalt car reviews

  1. Kenyon Mayert 2025-05-04

    Vehicle year: 2005

Oh no! It sounds like you're having some trouble with your 2005 Chevy Cobalt. It seems like the motor has thrown a rod and the paint job is coming off. On top of that, the A/C is leaking inside the car. You've already had to replace the brakes, starter, and rims. That's a lot to deal with! Let's see if we can find a solution to get your car back on the road.

  2. Shad Flatley 2025-04-19

    Vehicle year: 2007

I absolutely love my 2007 Cobalt! The manual transmission is surprisingly smooth, with a linear clutch and a stick with tight, short throws. It's not the fastest car out there, but it's got enough power to have some fun and feel confident overtaking. Plus, it's very economical if you drive with a light foot. The trunk is huge for its size, which is a great bonus. And for the price, there aren't many cars out there that look as good as the Cobalt coupe. However, there are a few things that could be improved. The road and wind noise can be a bit loud, and the seats aren't the most comfortable. Also, the high speed stability and braking could be better. As is typical with GM cars, the interior materials are a bit cheap and the build quality could be better. The base trim is a bit basic for a 2007 model, not even coming with power locks, windows, mirrors, or cruise control. And the rear leg and head room is a bit tight, so it might not be the best choice for larger passengers. I have had some issues with the front end suspension, but overall my Cobalt has been very reliable. I've never had an issue with it failing to start or dying on me. The 2.2 i4 engine seems to be pretty tough, as I've put 30,000 miles on it with one cylinder running at half the PSI it should be without any additional adverse effects. This car should have died long ago, but it just keeps on going. And if something does go wrong, repair and maintenance costs are very low. Overall, the Cobalt is a fantastic car for the price. It looks great, the manual transmission is a blast to drive, and it's easy on the wallet. If you're thinking of making a purchase, I would recommend going for a model with a more solid front end. It's best to avoid the base model as it's not very well equipped.

I recently traded in my 2005 Cobalt and I'm thrilled with my new car! While the engine and transmission were good, I had some issues with the rest of the car. There were a few spots of rust bubbling up through the paint on the body, and the interior was made of plastic that felt a bit cheap. The suspension wasn't great, and there was a clunking noise coming from the steering column that was a common issue with Cobalts. Additionally, the engine rattled loudly at idle and the blower motor has been chirping since 40,000 miles. Lastly, the door handles were painted with chrome paint that eventually flaked off. Despite these issues, I'm happy to have moved on to a new car.

I purchased an '08 Lt Sedan (4a) in September 2011 with only 58000 km's on it, and it felt like it was brand new and fully equipped! It's been almost two years and 40000 km later, and I'm still impressed with my Cobalt. The 2.2l engine is very quiet, yet performs flawlessly. I average around 600km per tank, and there's barely any road noise. The sound system is good, and it's reliable on the highway with good performance during Canadian Winters. The interior is plain, but nothing fancy. The ''info'' center is great as you can scroll through Oil Life, Gas Mileage, Outdoor temp, etc. All in all, it's a great car if you're looking for something non-fancy but will get you from A-B.

I have owned my 2006 Chevy Cobalt SS since 2008, when I bought it used with 22,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I have had a few issues with the car over the years and have spent a significant amount of money on repairs, not including those covered under warranty. In the first month, the sunroof motor went bad, and I also had to replace the wiring to my dome lights. At 30,000 miles, I had to replace the OEM stereo, and at 40,000 miles, the thermostat went bad. Both 02 exhaust sensors went bad at 50,000 miles, and I had to replace the Intake & the Exhaust camshaft actuators. At 60,000 miles, I had to replace the catalytic converter, and at 65,000 miles, both back window motors went bad. Finally, at 75,000 miles, all 4 fuel injectors went bad. Despite these issues, I still appreciate my car and hope to have it for many more years to come.

I was looking for a car that was fuel-efficient yet stylish. I considered the Corolla, but I didn't like the 4-door design, the Civic had some strange styling, and the Scion Tc didn't impress me. I'm so glad I decided to stick with Chevy and buy American! The car is a huge improvement over the Cavalier, and there's no comparison between the two. The 2.4L engine is great for acceleration, but I'm not a big fan of VVT (variable valve timing). I've driven 6,000 miles and haven't had any issues so far. I did have to take it to the garage because the sunroof button fell out of the roof, which the dealer said was a common problem.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed reading about your experience with your 2008 CobLg. It sounds like you've had quite the journey with it! Despite the harsh winters and long hours on the road, it's great to hear that your car has been so reliable. It's impressive that you've put over 161,400 miles on it since you purchased it in 2010! From what you've shared, it seems like this car has been a great investment for you. Thank you for sharing your story!

I've owned my Cobalt for 3 years now. When I bought it, it had 80,000km on it, and now it has 155,000km. I'm happy to say that aside from regular oil changes and maintenance, I haven't had to do a thing to this car. It's a fun, zippy car that's good on gas. Plus, it's fully loaded with leather and heated seats, so I really can't complain about much. The only issue I've had is one that many 2005 GM cars had - the intermediate steering shaft gets a bit sloppy. It's kind of annoying, but I've never felt unsafe. There's just a 1/4

We've owned a 2009 Chevy Cobalt for 9 years now, and it has clocked 225,000 miles. The only major repair we've had to do was to replace the strut assembly. We've been diligent about changing the oil regularly and checking the fluid levels, which has kept it running smoothly. The manual transmission makes it more peppy than the auto trans, and it gets an impressive 29-34 mpg. There is a little noise that you can hear when moving, but it's only become noticeable within the last 20,000 miles. Despite its bad reputation, I would highly recommend this car for its dependability. In fact, we still have the original clutch, which is awesome!

I think Chevy Cobalts are great cars overall. Although they have some issues, they are similar to the ones the Cavalier had. These include a cheap front suspension that may require a few repairs and some safety concerns, such as poor side crash test scores without side curtain airbags. However, I would recommend getting a 2008-2010 Cobalt as they come with side curtain airbags as a standard feature. If you are concerned about the side crash test scores, this is the best option. The Cobalt is an attractive car that gets good gas mileage and is quite reliable. If you decide to buy any year Chevy Cobalt, make sure you check that it has had the recalls taken care of, as all Cobalts were subject to a few recalls pertaining to the ignition/steering column. These cars have a smooth and enjoyable ride, but if you go over a raised bump, you will definitely feel it. Do your best to avoid bumps as the front suspension is somewhat fragile in my opinion. I have noticed that the Cobalts have really good body integrity. Usually, even the 10-year-old Cobalts still look good with no rust or bumpers falling off, etc. This is unlike the Cavalier, which tends to fall apart piece by piece unless they are babied. There are a few random cons for the Cobalt, such as the trunk being hard to open, and the lid being heavy. The mouth of the trunk is too small to take in larger items that might otherwise fit. The backseat is also very cramped with little legroom, so plan on anyone other than a child or dwarf hating it. All in all, I would definitely consider buying another one of these cars if it had the features and appearance I wanted.
