Chevrolet Cobalt problems

The Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The Cobalt replaced both the Cavalier and the Toyota-based Geo/Chevrolet Prizm as Chevrolet's compact car. The Cobalt was available as both a coupe and sedan, as well as a sport compact version dubbed the Cobalt SS. Like the Chevrolet HHR and the Saturn ION, it was based on the GM Delta platform.

A Pontiac version was sold in the United States and Mexico under the G5 name for 2007–2009. It was sold as the Pontiac G4 in Mexico for 2005–2006 and as the Pontiac G5 in Canada for its entire run (where it was briefly known as the Pontiac Pursuit and later Pontiac G5 Pursuit). The G5 replaced the Cavalier-related Pontiac Sunfire. While the Cobalt was available as a 2-door coupe and a 4-door sedan in all markets it was offered in, the G5 was only available as a coupé in the United States while a sedan version was sold alongside the coupé in Canada and Mexico.

As with their predecessors, all Cobalts and its Pontiac equivalents were manufactured at GM's plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and Lordstown, Ohio. The United States Environmental Protection Agency classified the Cobalt as a subcompact car.

Common Chevrolet Cobalt problems

The Chevrolet Cobalt, produced from 2005 to 2010, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are the details of the most frequently reported issues:

  • Ignition Key Stuck Due to Failed Shifter: This issue affects 2005-2010 Cobalts, with 302 owners reporting that their keys get intermittently stuck in the car's ignition cylinder.
  • Check Engine Light and Misfire Due to Ignition Module/Coil Failure: This problem is the second most common issue found in 2005-2010 Cobalts. The car's engine cuts off randomly, sometimes when slowing down or at a stop light/sign. The reported fix for this issue is to replace the ignition coil, which could cost an average of $353 to $426.
  • Broken Timing Chain: This issue has affected all Cobalt model years from 2005 to 2011. The main culprit is a faulty timing chain tensioner, which can fail around 108,000 miles. Many Cobalt owners reported spending around $1,500 to $2,000 for the fix.
  • Engine Misfire: This issue can be found in 2005-2010 Cobalts and tends to crop up around 107,000 miles. Reports from owners state that the car's engine cuts off randomly, sometimes when slowing down or at a stop light/sign. The reported fix for this issue is to replace the ignition coil, which could cost an average of $353 to $426.
  • Power Steering Issues: The 2005 Cobalt had over 1,000 complaints, 6 recalls, and the notorious "Avoid Like the Plague" designation. Its most prominent issue is with its electrical power steering system. According to numerous reports, drivers have lost the car's power steering, which can be a scary experience. In some cases, the steering becomes stiff and won't turn in any direction. It's such a widespread issue that GM sent a recall notice for the 2005-2010 Chevy Cobalt due to a faulty power steering motor.
  • Grinding Transmission When Shifting: The 2008 Chevy Cobalt had over 1,000 complaints and 5 recalls. The most common complaint is the grinding transmission when shifting. Several causes of the transmission grinds include low fluid transmission, contaminated transmission fluid, cracked or chipped gear, and faulty synchronizer. According to the reports, the issue happens at low mileage too.

These issues have contributed to the Chevrolet Cobalt's overall reliability rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars from Repair Pal, but potential buyers should be aware of these common problems before purchasing a used Cobalt.

  • Summary: The car idles very low when stopped and sputters/putters like it's going to die. It has now actually died on me twice while driving, luckily when you put it in park and turn the car off and back on it starts right back up but you can see how this is a severe safety hazard. The first time it died I was stopped in the turning lane waiting on traffic to go by so I could turn left (this is the busiest street in town) I go to start turning left the car just shuts off mid turn crossing the other lane of the street, luckily I didn't get hit by oncoming traffic and was able to coast onto the side street that I was turning on and pull over and turn the car off and back on and drive it home. I took it to the mechanic and he can't figure out what's wrong with it so he gives it a tune up and now the check engine light won't turn off...fast forward to today it dies again at a stop sign with my [XXX] in the car. It is ESPECIALLY bad if you have the AC on it seems like it effects the electrical like the car is going to shut off when I am stopped and the ac is running, so I turned off the ac and it was still sputtering when I would stop but didn't die again. There is an entire thread of people with the same issue as me: [XXX] this car needs recalled it is a death trap. • Date Complaint: 2024-05-23
  • VIN: 1G1AL58F987
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: When the driver's side window on my 2008 Chevy Cobalt is fully open/down, the "Service air bag" warning light comes on. This seems to be the exact same issue that resulted in a recall on the 2010 model (NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V500000). When I called Chevrolet corporate customer service regarding this, they explained the model years were manufactured the same, and the reason my year did not have a recall could be that there were not enough reported complaints on it. It is very concerning, since as my dealer indicated, the airbag system seems to be disabled when in this condition. I put today's date as the when the incident occurred, but it's been a condition for the last few years.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 35 recalls for different components of the Chevrolet Cobalt. You can explore the year of the Volkswagen Jetta you are interested in by selecting it from the list.

  • Model: Chevrolet Cobalt 2010
  • Report Received Date: 2015-08-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt vehicles manufactured January 4, 2010, to June 23, 2010. The affected vehicles may be equipped with an improperly routed Side-Impact Sensor (SIS) wiring harness in the driver side front door. The misrouted wiring harness could cause an electrical short that disables the driver side curtain air bag.
  • Consequence: A disabled driver side roof-rail air bag will not deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of that air bag, increasing the risk of injury to the driver.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the sensor's wiring in the driver's door and make repairs as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on September 8, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 15075.
  • Model: Chevrolet Cobalt 2007
  • Report Received Date: 2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
  • Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).

Latest negative Chevrolet Cobalt car reviews

  1. Stevie Franecki 2025-09-22

    Vehicle year: 2007

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Cobalt, which I bought brand new in 2005. Although it's been a while since I purchased it, I still think it's a decent car overall. I have to admit, it's grown on me over the years! The ride is good and the handling is great, which is definitely a plus. However, I do wish the fuel economy was better considering it's a 4-cylinder. The interior design and room are not the best, unfortunately. The backseat is not very comfortable or roomy, and the trunk opening is quite tight. Additionally, the headlights are average and on long drives, it can get a bit uncomfortable. Despite these drawbacks, I still think it's worth taking a look at! Let me know if you have any questions.

  2. Jefferey Willms 2025-09-13

Over the past two years, I've invested more than 2k in repairs and paid 3k for this car. Although there are still some things that need fixing, unfortunately, something more serious always seems to break before I can save up enough money to address the less pressing issues. Repairs that have been made include: Main seal, Front Struts, Gas lines, Brake lines, A control arm that randomly broke, Brakes and rotors all around, Tire rods, Thermostat, and Transmission control module. However, there are still a few things that need to be fixed, such as the Intermediate steering shaft, Sway bar mounts, and Rear brake drums full rebuild. Additionally, there have been some electrical problems, such as the key fab randomly setting off the alarm when near the car and most of the interior lights not working. Despite these issues, the car has a good design and is comfortable for taller individuals. The leather has worn and some plastic parts have broken, causing noise. The paint on the roof and top off fenders is peeled, but there is no rust or dents. The car has good handling and acceleration, but there is some front noise and wind noise. Overall, the car has been affordable and has served me well for a year, but it has had consistent problems. I would not recommend it to others. However, I am enjoying the fact that it is now paid off.

I am sorry to hear about your experience with your 08 Cobalt. It sounds like you have had a lot of issues with the car, including electrical problems, power steering, ignition, gear shifter, locks, windows, and speakers. It must have been frustrating to deal with all of these problems. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

I purchased this car from a wonderful man named Vince at Car City on E. 14th Street in Des Moines, Iowa in April of 2012. Initially, I was searching for a Ford Focus with a 5-speed manual transmission, but the color of this car (Pepsi Blue) caught my eye. I have only encountered one issue with this car: the air conditioner pulley lost some mounting screws and a belt popped off. Losing a screw may have been due to my moderate off-roading at Jester Park, and a belt popping off can happen sometimes, but in this case, it was caused by the AC pulley shifting in position due to a lack of mounting hardware. It was just bad luck, really. Despite this, I absolutely adore this car. It doesn't have any fancy features like power windows, locks, or mirrors, and it's a 5-speed, but I still love it!

I bought this car brand new to drive to work and school. Previously, I owned a Chevy Lumina for many years. However, I wouldn't buy this car again. After two months of owning it and driving 3000 miles, I traded it in for a used Subaru. The Cobalt just didn't meet my expectations. It felt cheap and poorly designed. In fact, I now say that I would rather drive a used Subaru than a brand new Cobalt.

Great, let's get started! I've been driving this car for a year now and it's been amazing. I've put on 20,000km and it handles twisty mountain roads with ease, giving me a lot of confidence. While I do agree that the plastics on the interior and the back seat could be better, we have to keep in mind that this is an economy car and not a $100 million dollar machine. As for the interior storage, it's adequate for daily commutes unless you're carrying something as big as a body with you, but then again, you can always use the massive trunk for that!

You're in for a treat with this car! I bought it brand new back in December 2007 and have driven it for over 121K miles. I can confidently say that this is the most reliable car I have ever owned. The only maintenance it has required was the replacement of the recalled ignition switch and electric power steering motor, as well as a repositioning and splicing of the daytime running light harness at the radiator support and oiling of the HVAC fan. Other than that, I have only done the prescribed preventive service myself. The best part? Maintenance on this car is simple and not expensive at all!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with our Cobalt that we bought brand new in 2008. We got a great deal and have been very happy with it. We did have one issue with the mirrors when we first got it, but it was taken care of quickly and easily. Our Cobalt is a manual and we typically get about 34-37 mpg on the highway and 30-33 mpg in the city (depending on who's driving). Overall, it's been a good car, although there isn't a lot of room in the back seat. Thanks for listening!

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2010 Cobalt coupe. I bought it back in 2013 with only 20,000 miles on it, and since then I've put an additional 82,000 miles on it over the last six years. The amazing thing is that I haven't had a single issue with it! I did a proactive transmission flush a couple of years ago, and recently replaced parts of the cam shaft mechanism plus spark plugs, and it runs as smoothly as ever. This car has really surprised me with its longevity and reliability. It's been a great commuter car, especially since my daily commute is a 100-mile round trip!
