2008 Chevrolet Cobalt problems
The Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The Cobalt replaced both the Cavalier and the Toyota-based Geo/Chevrolet Prizm as Chevrolet's compact car. The Cobalt was available as both a coupe and sedan, as well as a sport compact version dubbed the Cobalt SS. Like the Chevrolet HHR and the Saturn ION, it was based on the GM Delta platform.
A Pontiac version was sold in the United States and Mexico under the G5 name for 2007–2009. It was sold as the Pontiac G4 in Mexico for 2005–2006 and as the Pontiac G5 in Canada for its entire run (where it was briefly known as the Pontiac Pursuit and later Pontiac G5 Pursuit). The G5 replaced the Cavalier-related Pontiac Sunfire. While the Cobalt was available as a 2-door coupe and a 4-door sedan in all markets it was offered in, the G5 was only available as a coupé in the United States while a sedan version was sold alongside the coupé in Canada and Mexico.
As with their predecessors, all Cobalts and its Pontiac equivalents were manufactured at GM's plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and Lordstown, Ohio. The United States Environmental Protection Agency classified the Cobalt as a subcompact car.

Common 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt problems
Common Problems with the Chevrolet Cobalt 2008
The Chevrolet Cobalt, produced from 2005 to 2010, has been known for several issues that have affected its reliability and performance. While the 2008 model year saw improvements compared to previous years, it still had its share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by owners of the Chevrolet Cobalt 2008.
- Grinding Transmission When Shifting
One of the most common problems with the Chevrolet Cobalt 2008 is the grinding transmission when shifting. This issue can occur at low mileage and is caused by several factors, including low transmission fluid, contaminated transmission fluid, cracked or chipped gears, and faulty synchronizers. The problem can make the car difficult to drive and may require costly repairs.
- Key Stuck in the Ignition
Another common issue with the Chevrolet Cobalt 2008 is the key getting stuck in the ignition. This problem can occur when the car is in the OFF position, making it difficult to remove the key and increasing the risk of the car rolling away if the parking brake is not engaged. This issue has been the subject of a GM recall, which aimed to address the problem by modifying the ignition lock cylinder.
- Faulty Timing Chain Tensioner
The Chevrolet Cobalt 2008 has also been known for a faulty timing chain tensioner that can fail at around 108,000 miles. This issue can cause the timing chain to break, leading to significant engine damage and requiring costly repairs. The problem affects all Cobalt model years from 2005 to 2011 and has been a source of frustration for many owners.
- Engine Misfire
The Chevrolet Cobalt 2008 has also been known for engine misfires, which can occur at around 107,000 miles. This problem can cause the engine to cut off randomly, sometimes when slowing down or at a stop light/sign. The reported fix for this issue is to replace the ignition coil, which can cost an average of $353 to $426.
- Power Steering Failure
While the Chevrolet Cobalt 2008 was not as affected by power steering issues as earlier models, some owners have reported problems with the power steering system. This issue can cause the steering wheel to become stiff or difficult to turn, making the car difficult to maneuver and potentially dangerous.
- Electrical Issues
The Chevrolet Cobalt 2008 has also been known for various electrical issues, including problems with the battery, alternator, and starter motor. These issues can cause the car to have difficulty starting or running, and may require costly repairs.
While the Chevrolet Cobalt 2008 had its share of problems, it is still a popular choice for those looking for a reliable and affordable compact car. By being aware of these common issues, potential buyers can make informed decisions and take steps to address any problems that may arise.

This seems to be the exact same issue that resulted in a recall on the 2010 model (NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V500000). When I called Chevrolet corporate customer service regarding this, they explained the model years were manufactured the same, and the reason my year did not have a recall could be that there were not enough reported complaints on it. It is very concerning, since as my dealer indicated, the airbag system seems to be disabled when in this condition. I put today's date as the when the incident occurred, but it's been a condition for the last few years.

2008 Chevrolet Cobalt recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt.
- Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
- Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
- Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
- Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
- Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GMs recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2008 Cobalt. I recently had to say goodbye to it after it was totaled in a head-on collision. I'm happy to report that the car fully protected me and the airbag deployed, which was a major plus. Throughout the 26,000 miles I drove it, I had no major maintenance issues, although there were a few minor annoyances with the radio/digital display. The car was incredibly reliable, quiet, and performed exceptionally well on long trips. The stock sound system was fantastic and while the interior was plain, it was still a great value. The car handled the road very well, especially considering its value. This was actually the second Cobalt I've owned in the last 5 years (an '05 previously) and I've never been disappointed. Overall, I would highly recommend this car as a great, reliable option for anyone looking for a good value.
-
When the cobalt was new, we had FOB and computer lock-up problems. However, we worked through those early on, and it's been great ever since! The best attribute? The deep, big trunk! It's fantastic!
-
Great choice for the price! Your son made a smart decision in choosing the Cobalt as his new vehicle. I was impressed with its performance, stylish design, and safety features. While it may not be one of the trendy Japanese sports cars, it's definitely turning heads and your son is receiving a lot of compliments. The best part is that it's affordable too!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it a while ago and I absolutely love it! I have the LT edition and even with all my stuff packed in (I'm currently moving), I still get 36 on the highway. The acceleration and braking are great too! The only downside I've found is that it can get a bit uncomfortable on long road trips.

You have an LT package XFE (5M), which means you have electric windows and a center armrest. The car is impressively quiet, and the handling is rock-solid even at high speeds. The hard seats are surprisingly comfortable on long trips. The trunk is spacious, although the opening is a bit small. With the manual transmission, the 2.2 engine can really move. This car is a blast to drive, with plenty of front seat room and great mileage. Underneath, the Cobalt is actually an Opel Astra, so if you're a fan of German cars, you'll love this one. And at the price Chevy sells them for, it's an absolute bargain!

I bought my Cobalt a couple of months ago to replace my gas-guzzling Alero. However, I'm only getting 450km a tank in my car :( and I'm only driving it on the highway to school and back, so that was really disappointing. On the bright side, the car has a HUGE trunk and is really nice both inside and out. It's also fun to drive and reliable, not to mention sporty and fairly peppy for a 2.2.

I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my first car. Unfortunately, it didn't meet my expectations. The day after I brought it home, I noticed some issues with the gears and the front speakers. I took it back to the dealership and they fixed the problems. However, a year later, I had to go back for more transmission work. The suspension also started to make some noise and the steering wheel would shimmy when I hit the brakes. In the end, I decided to trade it in. I would recommend considering other options before purchasing this car. Thank you for listening to my story.

The car has some drawbacks, such as uncomfortable interior made of substandard materials and poor visibility out the back window due to its upward angle. It may not be the best option for hilly areas, mountains, or winding roads. However, for everyday commuting in a flat area, it can be a decent choice. I am considering trading it in for a Ford Focus or a Toyota Corolla.

Hello! I wanted to bring to your attention that there is a recall on the ignition switch that you may want to look into. I recently purchased a car with 68,000 miles on it and it seemed to be in great condition. However, after getting the ignition switch replaced by the GM dealership, I started experiencing some issues. I'm currently unsure if it's a battery drain or an alternator problem, but I wanted to let you know that the car is still in great condition and it's unfortunate to be having these issues. The first time the battery was drained, nothing on the vehicle was working - not the remote, not the brake pedal, and to top it off, the key was stuck in the ignition and wouldn't come out until I got a jump start. I hope this information is helpful to you!

I purchased my cobalt about nine months ago, and unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it. Two of the tires have blown while driving, the brakes are not functioning properly, two speakers have blown out, the computer system is not working, and all the tire monitors have gone bad. Additionally, the flex pipe coming from the manifold needs to be replaced, which is quite expensive. The locks in the car have stopped working, one headlight has cracked, and water has gotten inside it. Lastly, the exhaust system needs to be replaced. Sometimes, the car locks up when trying to start it, and the key gets stuck in the ignition. Although there was a recall for the power steering, it is currently not an issue. Despite these challenges, I am hopeful that I can get them resolved soon.
