2010 Chevrolet Cobalt problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The Cobalt replaced both the Cavalier and the Toyota-based Geo/Chevrolet Prizm as Chevrolet's compact car. The Cobalt was available as both a coupe and sedan, as well as a sport compact version dubbed the Cobalt SS. Like the Chevrolet HHR and the Saturn ION, it was based on the GM Delta platform.

A Pontiac version was sold in the United States and Mexico under the G5 name for 2007–2009. It was sold as the Pontiac G4 in Mexico for 2005–2006 and as the Pontiac G5 in Canada for its entire run (where it was briefly known as the Pontiac Pursuit and later Pontiac G5 Pursuit). The G5 replaced the Cavalier-related Pontiac Sunfire. While the Cobalt was available as a 2-door coupe and a 4-door sedan in all markets it was offered in, the G5 was only available as a coupé in the United States while a sedan version was sold alongside the coupé in Canada and Mexico.

As with their predecessors, all Cobalts and its Pontiac equivalents were manufactured at GM's plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and Lordstown, Ohio. The United States Environmental Protection Agency classified the Cobalt as a subcompact car.

Common 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt problems

The 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt has been known for several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are the details of the most commonly reported issues:

  • Power Steering Issues: Many 2010 Cobalt owners have reported issues with the power steering system, which can suddenly fail or become stiff, making it challenging to turn the steering wheel.
  • Key Stuck in Ignition: Another common problem is the key getting stuck in the ignition when shifting into park. This issue can be frustrating for drivers, as they may need to wiggle the wheel or press the gear shifter to remove the key.
  • Grinding Transmission: The 2010 Cobalt has also been reported to have issues with the transmission, specifically a grinding noise when shifting. This issue can be caused by low transmission fluid, contaminated transmission fluid, cracked or chipped gears, or a faulty synchronizer.
  • Engine Misfire: The second most common issue in 2005-2010 Cobalts is an engine misfire, where the car's engine cuts off randomly, sometimes when slowing down or at a stop light/sign. The reported fix for this issue is to replace the ignition coil, which could cost an average of $353 to $426.
  • Broken Timing Chain: This issue has been reported in all Cobalt models from 2005 to 2011, with a faulty timing chain tensioner causing the timing chain to break. This problem can result in the engine failing and may require replacing the cylinder head and timing chain, costing around $1,500 to $2,000.

These issues have contributed to the 2010 Cobalt receiving mixed reviews from owners, with some praising its reliability and others expressing frustration with the problems they have encountered.

I drive a smaller car, but i shouldnt have to be punished because i drive a smaller vehicle. This isnt about specifically the make and model of the car, but solely on the bright LED headlights that are dangerous while i am driving at night.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-11
  • VIN: 1G1AB5F56A7
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My car had a fuel pump go, then within MONTHS, another. We then dealt with the SAME problem symptomatically, and was told it was the fuel pump sensor. Within the last few weeks, I am having all the same issues-including the car intermittently not starting, gasoline leaking from the vehicle, both noticably missing from the gauge (i.e 1/8 tank less than night prior), odor of gas in the car, stalling out while driving and trying to start it, but also now dripping gas from the car. A new issue popped up, which is the dash light coming up saying "check gas cap". This past Thursday, my car wouldn't start again, and has not started since. It's concerning that the Chevy Cobalt has had recalls for the same exact problems, literally thousands of complaints that mirror mine- for every model year EXCEPT the 2010. It's also interesting that they also stopped producing the Cobalt entirely in 2010 too, but considering the amount of faults and issues I've seen documented in every year model it's not a shock. I'm concerned that despite the amount of complaints that include 2010 models, they were excluded from the recall and seeing that my situation is another one that won't be covered, fixed, or made right by GM is something that doesn't make sense. I have also seen, that in 2021 an investigation was launched specifically into this exact issue with the 2010, as well. I'm carless right now, with no answers from Chevy other than that it's not part of the recall, yet it's part of the problem. Something is VERY wrong here. It's shocking they wouldn't recall a vehicle knowing it's dripping gas, pooling gas, it's such a hazard for not only anyone driving them, but anyone driving near us or even PARKED near us. Please help do something! Also I have videos of my car dripping, 2 days prior to it not starting, if there is somewhere I could send those as well.

2010 Chevrolet Cobalt recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt.

2015-08-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt vehicles manufactured January 4, 2010, to June 23, 2010. The affected vehicles may be equipped with an improperly routed Side-Impact Sensor (SIS) wiring harness in the driver side front door. The misrouted wiring harness could cause an electrical short that disables the driver side curtain air bag.
  • Consequence: A disabled driver side roof-rail air bag will not deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of that air bag, increasing the risk of injury to the driver.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the sensor's wiring in the driver's door and make repairs as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on September 8, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 15075.
2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
  • Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
2014-04-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
  • Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
  • Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
2014-03-31
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2006 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2006 Malibu Maxx, 2009-2010 HHR (non-turbo), 2010 Cobalt, 2008-2009 Saturn Aura and 2004-2007 Ion, and 2005-2009 Pontiac G6. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
  • Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will perform one of four bulletins. Parts are not currently available. GM expects to send an interim notification around May 28, 2014. When parts are available, owners will be mailed a second letter to come in to have the applicable bulletin applied. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GM’s recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.

Negative 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt car reviews

Before making a purchase, it's always a good idea to check Edmunds.com for any potential repair issues, especially with the brake light staying on while driving. Unfortunately, this problem has persisted from the 2008 model to the 2010 model. It can be frustrating to have to visit the dealership every 6 months for this issue, and it's understandable to feel disappointed that they haven't been able to fix it yet.

I recently rented a cobalt for a drive through the California desert. The A/C seemed to work efficiently, until we reached a particularly hot stretch at 75 MPH, then the A/C shut itself off for 10 minutes. It continued on this on off cycle until we left the hot part of the desert. When it shut off, there was a ping from the computer and the recirculate light started blinking. Stay away from deserts in your Cobalt.

Have only had for 2 days, so this is a preliminary review. It's great to hear that it handles well and drives smoothly. I'm very interested to see what your average mpg will end up as since you drive so many highway miles. It's impressive that you traded in a minivan that got 24.5mpg avg.

My 2010 Chevy Cobalt has had numerous issues, including a stuck key in the ignition that prevented the car from shutting off. I am currently at the dealership to get it fixed. We have also experienced multiple computer problems, resulting in one replacement and a suggestion for another. The car has had trouble accelerating, with a maximum speed of 10 miles per hour on three separate occasions. While the computer part was replaced the first time and reset the second and third times, the car still experiences occasional hitches, particularly when the air conditioning is on. The check engine light also comes on frequently for no apparent reason, despite multiple checks revealing nothing. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in the ability of the dealership to resolve these issues and ensure the optimal performance of my vehicle.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Cobalt Coupe LS XFE that I bought back in March 2010. I must say, I am still very impressed with it! The fuel economy is incredible, averaging 31 to 34, even with mostly around-town driving. The ride is smooth, the seats are comfortable, and the trunk is huge! Although the interior lacks some style, I find the center stack buttons to be laid out in a very efficient and easy-to-use fashion. In terms of visibility, the front and side views are great for a 2-door car, but the rear view can be a bit blocked by the giant trunk's lid. However, the headlights are decent. I know some people complain about its reliability, but I have had none of those problems thanks to proper maintenance. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase!

Hi there! I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Cobalt after 3 months of driving it. It sounds like you're getting some amazing gas mileage on your commute, which is fantastic! While I understand that the interior may not be the most comfortable for someone of your height and weight, it's great to hear that the Cobalt is still performing well for you. With its impressive fuel efficiency and horsepower, it's definitely a top contender in its class. Thanks for sharing your positive experience and recommendation!

  2. Kevon Schulist 2024-11-13

Great job on your performance! Your car is not only enjoyable to drive, but it's also fuel-efficient, getting an impressive 29-30 miles per gallon.

  3. Leonard Gutkowski 2024-11-04

I got this XFE with the LT interior. The seats are really comfortable. My gas mileage is twice that of my minivan. The transition was a little stiff at first, but after 2000 miles it's fine. It's a great deal for the money.

I live in Arizona also and my SS doesn't have any issues with the A/C...you should go get it checked out..I also have a new camaro in which this is my daily car and its great power even stock, very comfortable and smooth ride to drive even on nice long trips that I take to cali, the A/C blasts Ice cold to where I have to turn it off it gets too cold, and overall for the price of the car and with the warranty the cars a steal if you can get your hands on a SS...I've never been happier with any of my everyday cars as I am with this one

  5. Eugene Cassin 2024-09-29

I bought a 2007 Malibu for my mother and it has been a great car for her. So, I decided to buy the 2010 Cobalt for myself. I must say, I am impressed with my 2 door LT Cobalt. It is a fun little car to drive, handles well, and has plenty of get up and go. The fit and finish are much better than past Chevy models. It comes with many features that you would expect to find on a much more expensive car. The 4-speed auto shifts smoothly. The car handles and rides well. I hope it continues to perform well with many miles put on.
