2005 Mazda Mazda6 problems

The Mazda6 (known as the Mazda Atenza in Japan, derived from the Italian attenzione) is a mid-size sedan produced by Mazda since 2002, replacing the long-produced Capella/626.

The Mazda6 was marketed as the first example of the company's "Stylish, Insightful and Spirited" design philosophy, followed by the Mazda2 in December 2002, the RX-8 in August 2003, the Mazda3 in January 2004, the Mazda5 in the summer of 2005, the MX-5 in October 2005, and the CX-7 in November 2006. The 2003 Mazda6 is essentially the seventh-generation Mazda 626, part of the 'G' model code family.

First generation (GG1; 2002)

The first-generation Mazda6 was launched in Japan as the Mazda Atenza in May 2002. The model lineup consisted of a four-door sedan, a four-door hatchback and a five-door wagon, marketed in North America as the "Sport Sedan", "5-Door" and "Sport Wagon", respectively. In Australia, the lineup was first available in Limited trim, as a sedan; in Classic trim as sedan, hatch or wagon and in Luxury trim as a sedan and liftback — and Luxury Sports trim, as a liftback. In New Zealand, the lineup consisted of 2.0L GLX (sedan only), 2.3L GSX (sedan, liftback, and wagon), and 2.3L Limited (sedan and liftback).

The first generation was marketed as a 2003 model in the United States and as a 2004 model in Canada. In Europe, the luxury sports model was available as a 120 hp (89 kW) direct injection turbodiesel ("DITD") estate up until 2007. As of 2008, the European Mazda catalog listed only the "Sport" version of the 146 hp (109 kW) turbodiesel estate, while the "Luxury Sport" version had been dropped.

Drivetrain combinations included the Mazda MZR engine in configurations of 1.8 L (L8-DE), 2.0 L (LF-VE) and 2.3 L (L3-VE), initially with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "Four-Speed Sport AT"). In the US domestic market a 3.0 L Duratec 30 V6 engine was also available with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic (with a sequential-automatic option, dubbed the "5-Speed Sport AT"). European and Australian versions also feature a four-cylinder turbodiesel that comes with a six-speed manual transmission and produces significantly more torque than the V6, with much improved fuel economy.

In North America, the 5-speed automatic optional on the V6 models were replaced by an Aisin 6-speed automatic for the 2005 model year. The four-cylinder model received a Jatco five-speed automatic in the following year. Power was directed to the front wheels in most markets, although full-time all-wheel-drive models were available in Japan, Europe, and Australia. Not all configurations were available in all areas – for example, the Mazda 6 as released in Australia was available in 2.3L four-cylinder guise only, when the 626 it replaced had been available with a choice of four- or six-cylinder engines. The MZI V6 engine was only fitted to vehicles manufactured at Mazda's Flat Rock Assembly Plant and destined for the U.S. and Canadian domestic markets.

Mazda's Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture produced the Mazda6 for international markets from February 2002 to August 2007. In North America, Mazda6 production was handled at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. The first Mazda6 rolled off the AAI assembly line on October 1, 2002, one month after 626 production ended. There are also satellite plants building Mazda6 models in China and Thailand for local markets.

In September 2005, the Mazda6 received a facelift which introduced 5-speed auto and 6-speed manual transmissions, standard 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, and minor bodywork upgrades.

In China, the Mazda6 was introduced by FAW Mazda in 2003. Despite the release of its successors, the first generation car, known locally as the Maliu (马六, "Horse 6"), continues to be manufactured at FAW's Changchun plant, having sold over 770,000 units as of 2014. This model is also used as the base for the FAW Benteng, also known as Besturn B70 or Hongqi C301.

Common 2005 Mazda Mazda6 problems

The 2005 Mazda 6, like any vehicle, has its share of common problems that owners have reported. One of the most critical issues is the sudden loss of speed control, which can lead to accidents or collisions. This problem can be particularly dangerous, and if you experience it, it's crucial to consult a mechanic immediately.

Another common problem with the 2005 Mazda 6 is idling issues. Some owners have reported that the RPM may suddenly become unstable while stopping at traffic lights, which can be caused by faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or vacuum leaks. If you encounter this issue, it's essential to consult a mechanic and get a thorough inspection to accurately determine the cause and replace any failing parts promptly.

The 2005 Mazda 6 is also known for crankshaft or camshaft position sensor problems, which are indicated by the P0016 code. This issue can cause engine failure and poor engine performance, starting failure, and excessive vibrations. It's crucial to address this problem as soon as possible because it may cause other troublesome symptoms.

Overheating engine is another common issue in the 2003-2010 and 2012 Mazda 6 models, usually caused by malfunctioning engine cooling fans. Their cooling fan control modules may have gone bad, causing symptoms to show up at around 125,200 miles.

In addition to these issues, the 2005 Mazda 6 may also experience transmission issues, particularly in early models. It's essential to stay away from the 2003 model and change your transmission fluid if you notice it becomes dark and dirty.

Oil leaks are also common in a V6 engine, and completely eliminating all the leaks could be quite expensive. It's recommended to start by replacing the valve cover gaskets.

A ripped intake snorkel (rubber boot) can cause a vacuum leak, which can result in the engine stalling and the Check Engine light staying on, with the code P2179. The repair is very simple, the snorkel must be replaced.

In some 2006, 2007 Mazda 6, the passenger side window might stop working after the battery has been disconnected or drained. The power window initialization procedure must be performed.

The steering shaft in question is located above the pedals under the steering column, and the repair is very simple; the steering shaft splines need to be lubricated.

Faded headlights may be restored using a very simple technique. Here are a few YouTube videos that can help you with the process.

In summary, the 2005 Mazda 6 has several common problems that owners have reported, including sudden speed control loss, idling issues, crankshaft or camshaft position sensor problems, overheating engine, transmission issues, ignition coils failure, oil leaks, coolant leaks, vacuum leaks, and window issues. It's crucial to address these problems promptly to ensure the safety and longevity of your vehicle.

2005 Mazda Mazda6 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2005 Mazda Mazda6.

2019-10-31
  • Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations
  • Park It: 1
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2003-2008 Mazda6, 2004-2005 MPV, 2004 RX-8, and 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6 vehicles. These vehicles had their passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is performed. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate one, free of charge. The recall began December 3, 2019. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 2618F. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 13V130, 14V362, 14V773 and 15V869.

These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these passenger air bag inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is performed. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began July 6, 2018. Negative 2005 Mazda Mazda6 car reviews

I purchased my 6 brand new and thought it looked really cool. I owned it until 6/2008 and only put about 25K miles on it. Unfortunately, things were always going wrong with it. The headlights kept burning out and I went through 4 sets of bulbs over a 1-year time frame. Additionally, the transmission would shift randomly and clunk all the time. Despite taking it to the dealership, they said nothing was wrong with it. I also experienced issues with blown out vacuum hoses, brakes going out, and a shot battery after only 1 year. The seats were hard as a rock and it was not safe on ice, handling very badly and always getting stuck in the snow. Traction control was a joke and the dash scratched so easily. Overall, I was not very happy with this car and was so relieved to trade it in.

You purchased the car just over 5 months ago and unfortunately, you've experienced a few issues. You've had to replace a few headlight bulbs, the license plate light, and do some reprogramming. Additionally, you've had to replace both front brake lines and both front axle boots and cv joints. The cigarette lighter has been blowing fuses and you've had to replace both front and back brake pads. Lastly, the display clock has been flickering. It's important to be honest about these things and not always rely on reviews. It sounds like you've made the decision to sell or trade in the car.

Indicated oil consumption of 1 qt /1000 miles can leave an engine vulnerable, particularly when the car design doesn't have an oil light that illuminates when oil is low. This can spell disaster for a car owner. Additionally, the low end torque is minimal, which means that the engine must be revved up all the time when starting from a dead stop. This is probably not good for an engine either, especially one that is constantly consuming oil.

Congratulations on your first car purchase! It sounds like you made a great choice with this one. I can tell that you put a lot of thought into finding a car that truly represents you and your hard work. The way you describe how it hugs the road and the engine roar shows how much you enjoy driving it. It's great to hear that the factory stereo system is mind-blowing. I understand that repairs can be expensive, but it's good to know that you're overall happy with your choice. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I've always been a fan of Euro-style sport wagons, but unfortunately, Audis and Volvos were out of my budget, and BMW and Mercedes were simply unattainable. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the Mazda6 had a sleek design, impressive performance, and truly sporty handling. The engine runs smoothly and I recently achieved 28 MPG on the highway, which is quite impressive considering I was driving at 70+ MPH with the air conditioning on. The steering response is truly reminiscent of a sports car and the brakes are strong, to the point where I'm considering taking this car to the track instead of my Porsche. With premium audio, multiple airbags, and automatic climate control, the overall feel is akin to driving a luxury car, and I often receive compliments on the sporty appearance.

  3. Emilio Cummings 2024-09-29

This car is amazing! It comes with a wide range of accessories, most of which are standard, unlike other mid-size cars, especially those manufactured in America. We opted for the leather package with Bose and moonroof, and I must say, it's incredibly comfortable. Driving it is a real thrill, with top-notch acceleration and handling that rivals high-priced sports cars. Unlike other cars in its class, it doesn't have the typical 'sedan' look. We test drove the Optima, Accord, Camry, and Passat, but none of them could match this fantastic package.

  4. Newton Renner 2024-09-16

Here is a car that you'll love to drive! It offers sporty handling while still providing the comfort of a sedan. Plus, it's a great value for your money.

  5. Kiley Williamson 2024-09-08

This is my first Mazda and I must say, it's a fantastic car! I looked at a lot of other vehicles such as the Passat and Audi A4, but I kept coming back to this one. The handling, performance, price and fuel economy make it a hard deal to pass up. The wagon has a ton of room for hauling around just about anything. This car is one of the few that needs little improvement. Buy it and you won't regret it!
