The Volkswagen Golf is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) produced by the German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across eight generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates – including as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).

The original Golf Mk1 was a front-engined, front-wheel drive replacement for the air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and is among the world's top three best-selling models, with more than 35 million units sold as of 2019.

Initially, most Golfs were 3-door hatchbacks. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002, Cabriolet, 2011–present), and a Golf-based saloon, called the Jetta, Vento (from 1992) or Bora (from 1999). The Golf covers economy to high-performance market segments.

The Golf has won awards, including the World Car of the Year in 2009, with the Mk6 and in 2013 with the Mk7. Along with the Renault Clio and the Vauxhall Astra, the Golf is one of only three cars to have won European Car of the Year twice, in 1992 and 2013. The Golf has made the annual Car and Driver 10Best list multiple times. The Mk7 won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2015, and the Mk1 GTI also won the award in 1985. The Mk4 won for the best-selling car in Europe in 2001.

Common 2015 Volkswagen E-golf problems

The Volkswagen e-Golf, particularly the 2015 model, has faced several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most notable issues:

  • Charging Equipment Problems: Some owners have reported difficulties with the onboard charging system, including slow charging or charging failure. This issue can be frustrating for e-Golf owners, as it can hinder their ability to efficiently charge their vehicles.
  • Infotainment Glitches: The e-Golf’s infotainment system has occasionally shown signs of malfunction, such as freezing or failure to boot up. While not a critical issue, it can be inconvenient and affect the overall user experience.
  • Brake System Concerns: A few reports have mentioned problems with the brake system, including noise and less responsive braking. This issue can impact the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

Despite these issues, Volkswagen has been proactive in addressing concerns through recalls and updates. Most of these problems were rectified in later models, and a well-maintained e-Golf from a trustworthy year should not exhibit these problems.

Volkswagen e-Golf Economy and Emissions

A real-life range of 150 miles rather than 100 miles makes an electric car so much more useable, especially if your driving takes in occasional motorway journeys. You can charge the e-Golf from a standard household three-pin socket, but a full charge takes 17 hours.

Why did Volkswagen stop making the e-Golf?

At the time, VW also confirmed that it wasn't looking into coming out with a new version of the e-Golf with the Mk 8 Golf, as the brand was looking to expand on its ID lineup of EVs. While VW was quick to discontinue the e-Golf to switch its focus to ID-badged EVs, the model could be making a comeback in the future.

Is the e-Golf worth it?

Overall verdict on the Volkswagen e-Golf. "The Volkswagen e-Golf is the ideal introduction to electric cars. It feels just like a more refined version of the (already ultra-refined) Volkswagen Golf. It doesn't shout about its electric credentials, but it's superb to drive and comes well kitted out for the money.

POWER TRAIN,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-18
  • VIN: WVWKP7AU8FW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I was driving and the car shuddered and lost all power and would not accelerate. The car glided to a stop, but there were no shoulders so I was stuck blocking traffic. Later, the police helped push it to a side street where it was safe to park. The dashboard displayed the following error: "Error: Electrical System. Stop!" This message occured at the time of the failure. There were no symptoms or warnings prior to the failure. This message can not be found in the owners manual. Turning the car off and on does not change the situation. The vehicle has not been inspected by a dealer and is awaiting a tow to a dealer

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-01
  • VIN: WVWPP7AU9FW
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: There is a known issue regarding a software update required to keep using the heat and cooling options on 2015 and older eGOLF models. Without this patch the heating and cooling of the vehicle will cease to operate. This includes the defogging capability for front and side windows in cold weather. On more than one occasion, I have had to wipe condensation from the windows while driving due to the failure of the heat pump. VW is aware of this software issue, but for vehicles out of the standard warranty will require a service diagnostic fee as well as a large repair cost for essentially a software upgrade. VW owns the diagnostic tools and software so there is no third party way to fix this issue. Affected vehicles should have the software update applied so visibility is not affected during driving. POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-04-17
  • VIN: WVWPP7AUXFW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: CAR WAS IN MOTION ON A CITY STREET AND SUDDENLY LOST POWER. PULLED OFF ROAD, WAITED AND RESTARTED VEHICLE WITH NORMAL FUNCTION. EVALUATED AT VW DEALER AND TOLD THE DC-DC CONVERTOR IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY AND SHUTTING DOWN THE MOTOR. THIS PART WAS PART OF A PRIOR SAFETY RECALL BY NHSTA, AND THE CAR WAS EVALUATED AND SAID TO BE FIXED. CONTACTED VW OF AMERICA (CASE # 04750977) AND TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AS THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-01-06
  • VIN: WVWPP7AU8FW
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: WHEN I WENT TO UNPLUG MY CAR IN MY GARAGE, THE CHARGING PORT WOULD NOT RELEASE THE CHARGER. WHEN I LOOKED IT UP ONLINE, I FOUND THAT MANY PEOPLE WHO OWNED 2015 E-GOLFS HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AND THAT NONE OF THE ELECTRICAL RESETS WOULD WORK TO GET THE CHARGING PORT TO RELEASE THE CHARGING CABLE. (HTTPS://WWW.MYVWEGOLF.COM/FORUM/VIEWTOPIC.PHP?F=12&T=839&START=60) I TRIED ALL THE ELECTRICAL RESETS ANYWAY, BUT NOTHING WORKED. THE CAR WAS LOCKED DOWN, AND IT WOULD NOT EVEN LET ME PUT IT IN NEUTRAL, SO IT COULD NOT BE ROLLED ON TO A TOW TRUCK. THE TOW TRUCK DAMAGED THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF MY CAR TRYING TO GET IT OUT OF MY GARAGE AS A RESULT. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE LUTHER WESTSIDE VW DEALERSHIP IN MINNEAPOLIS, MN, AND THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME A DEDUCTIBLE EVEN THOUGH THE FREQUENCY OF THIS ISSUE POINTS TO A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. THE CHARGING PORT SHOULD BE RECALLED. PEOPLE ARE BEING STRANDED OVER AND OVER AGAIN BECAUSE VW WON'T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-10-14
  • VIN: WVWPP7AU9FW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE VEHICLE INTERMITTENTLY WILL NOT UNLOCK/RELEASE THE CHARGING CONNECTOR FROM THE CONNECTION PORT. WHEN THIS OCCURS, THE EMERGENCY RELEASE PROCEDURE FOR THE VEHICLE WILL NOT RELEASE THE CHARGING CONNECTOR. THE CHARGING STATUS INDICATOR IS RED. EVENTUALLY CONNECTOR FINALLY RELEASES BUT AFTER EITHER HOURS OF WAITING OR SOMETIMES HITTTING THE CONNECTOR TO JAR IT FREE. DURING THE LOCKED CONDITION, THE VEHICLE IS NOT MOVEABLE - WILL NOT OPERATE. IF IT OCCURS AT A PUBLIC CHARGER, THE CAR IS LITERALLY TIED TO THE CHARGER AND BUILDING, UNABLE EVEN TO BE TOWED. CHARGERS CAN BE IN SOME KIND OF BLEAK, SCARY PLACES. NOT ALWAYS WHERE YOU WANT TO BE TRAPPED ALONE AT NIGHT. THERE ARE MANY REPORTS BY OTHER OWNERS/DRIVERS OF THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL, SEE: HTTPS://WWW.MYVWEGOLF.COM/FORUM/VIEWTOPIC.PHP?F=12&T=839&START=10 OR HTTPS://FORUMS.VWVORTEX.COM/SHOWTHREAD.PHP?9292185-NOW-CHARGER-PORT-WON-T-RELEASE-CHARGER-CONNECTER! ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-09-02
  • VIN: WVWPP7AU9FW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE 2015 EGOLF LOCKS THE CHARGING CONNECTOR ONTO THE VEHICLE DURING CHARGING. THIS FUNCTIONALITY HAS TWO (AT LEAST) BENEFITS TO THE VEHICLE OPERATOR. ONE BENEFIT IS THAT THE (VERY EXPENSEIVE) CAR CHARGER'S POWER SUPPLY CAN'T EASILY BE STOLEN DURING CHARGING. A SECOND, SAFETY-CENTRIC, FUNCTION IS DERIVED BY NOT ALLOWING THE CHARGING PORT TO SEPARATE WHILE A CHARGE IS UNDERWAY PREVENTING POSSIBLE ELECTRICAL ARCS AND ELECTROCUTION. THE LOCKING MECHAISM INTERMITTENLY FAILS TO UNLOCK TOGETHER WITH THE REST OF THE DOORS AND FUNCTIONS ON THE VEHICLE. THIS HAS SEVERAL POTENTIAL DANGERS TO A VEHICLE OPERATOR. WHEH THE CHARGE CONNECTER WILL NOT RELEASE, THE VEHICLE WILL START AND MIGHT CREATE A SITUATION OF BEING STRANDED AT NIGHT IN A PUBLC CHARGING LOCATION. TJRTRRWERT---9RR-RRWPWRHIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME. TRYING TO RELEASE THE PLUG REQUIRES A STRONG LONG NARROW OBJECT (USUALLY METAL) BE INSERTED INTO THE SHIELDED AREA OF THE LOCKING MECHANISM. THE MECHANISM CAN SOMETIMES BE OVER-RIDDEN THROUGH TRIAL AND ERROR. EVENAUALLY, THOUGH AN OOPERATOR IS GOING TO ACCIDENTALLY CONTACT ONE OF THE HIGH VOLTAGE TERMINALS.AND BE SERIOUSLY HURT OR KILLED. CLIPPERCREEK CHARGING EQUIPMENT SEEMS MORE LIKELY TO CAUSRE THIS CONDITION. OUR HSC-40 UNIT AND THE SMALLER 120V TRAVEL MODEL THESE ARE OTHER SIMILAR REPORTS FOUND ONLINE: HTTPS://WWW.MYVWEGOLF.COM/FORUM/VIEWTOPIC.PHP?F=12&T=839 ' HTTPS://WWW.MYVWEGOLF.COM/FORUM/VIEWTOPIC.PHP?F=12&T=839#P7764 ' HTTPS://WWW.MYVWEGOLF.COM/FORUM/VIEWTOPIC.PHP?F=12&T=839#P7764

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-01-03
  • VIN: WVWPP7AU1FW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: AFTER THE VEHICLE IS DONE CHARGING USING THE J1772 PLUG (L2 OR L1 CHARGING), THE PLUG REMAINS LOCKED TO THE VEHICLE CHARGING INLET. PRESSING THE J1772 PLUG BUTTON DOES NOT RELEASE THE PLUG AS THE CAR MUST BE UNLOCKED USING A KEY TO RELEASE THE PLUG. IN A PUBLIC CHARGING LOCATION, ANOTHER EV DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO REMOVE THE PLUG FROM MY CAR AND MAY HAVE BROKEN MY CAR IF I HAD NOT INTERVENED. I HAVE READ THAT OTHER PEOPLE WITH THIS VEHICLE HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE INLET DAMAGED BECAUSE THE PLUG STAYS LOCKED IN THE CAR DURING CHARGING AND AFTER CHARGING IS COMPLETE. ON A SEPARATE NOTE, AN ACQUAINTANCE WITH THE SAME CAR USED A PUBLIC L2 J1772 PLUG WITH A BROKEN LOCKING LATCH. WHEN HE REMOVED THE PLUG WHILE THE CAR WAS CHARGING, THERE WAS A LARGE SPARK WHICH JUMPED BETWEEN THE PLUG AND THE CAR. VW IS NOT FOLLOWING THE J1772 PROTOCOL AND THIS COULD LEAD TO SAFETY PROBLEMS IN THE CASE OF A BROKEN CHARGE PORT AND PERSONAL INJURY DUE TO SPARKING. PLEASE ASK VW TO CORRECTLY IMPLEMENT THE J1772 CHARGING PROTOCOL SO THAT PRESSING THE PLUG BUTTON AND/OR REMOVING THE PLUG STOPS CHARGING. PLUG LOCKING SHOULD ALSO BE DISABLED WHEN CHARGING IS COMPLETE.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-02-01
  • VIN: WVWPP7AU1FW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING THE ALL-ELECTRIC CAR HOME FROM WORK ON A 3/4 CHARGE (~75 MILES REMAINING RANGE) WHEN I NOTICED TWO FAST, SPLIT-SECOND JERKING MOTIONS, ABOUT 30 SECONDS APART. WITHIN ANOTHER MINUTE, THE CAR'S DASH SYSTEM SOUNDED AN ALARM AND AN ERROR POPPED UP ON THE DASH SCREEN, SAYING "ERROR: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. STOP!" THE CAR EFFECTIVELY TURNED OFF, GIVING ME JUST A FEW SECONDS TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CAR WAS IN MOTION - I WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 35 MPH - AND I WAS TRAVELING ON A TWO-LANE ROAD - FORTUNATELY NOT ON THE HIGHWAY - BUT THE CAR WENT FROM FULL DRIVE TO COMPLETE STOP IN JUST A FEW SECONDS. EFFORTS TO RESTART THE CAR (TURNING IT OFF AND ON) WERE UNSUCCESSFUL.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-12-19
  • VIN: WVWKP7AU9FW
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THE E-GOLF LOST ABILITY TO DRIVE, THERE IS A RED TRIANGLE WITH AN EXCLAMATION MARK ON THE DASH, AND THE RED CAR ICON WITH AN EXCLAMATION ON IT, INDICATING A "ELECTRICAL ERROR" ACCORDING TO THE MANUAL. ALL OTHER FUNCTIONS OF THE CAR SEEM TO BE WORKING, EXCEPT IT WON'T START, AND THE KEY FOB LOCK/UNLOCK IS NOT RESPONDING, SO MY CAR IS STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARKING LOT UNABLE TO MOVE. HAVING THE NO CHOICE BECAUSE MY CAR WAS NOT MOVING AND SITTING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE VALET PARKING LOT, I TOLD THEM TO DO IT, IN THE MEAN TIME THE VALET HAD "HIS BOSS" COME AND LOOK AT THE CAR, THIS GUY TOOK MY KEY FOB, PRESSED LOCK/THEN UNLOCK, HELD IF CLOSE TO THE STOP/START BUTTON, AND DEPRESSED THE BRAKE, SUDDENLY THE CAR RESTARTS, DIALS MOVE, HE DOES THIS A FEW TIMES AND NOW THE CAR IS COMPLETELY NORMAL.

Negative 2015 Volkswagen E-golf car reviews

  1. Buster Schroeder 2024-11-04

If you're considering purchasing an electric vehicle in the USA, it's worth noting that VW e-golf does not offer a free loaner like other companies do. Having a free loaner is a great way to save money if you need to travel beyond the range of the electric vehicle. It's unclear why VW does not provide this service annually like other companies such as Fiat or Ford, or even like VW in Europe. Due to this limitation, I can only give VW e-golf one star. Other electric vehicle purchase programs in the USA offer much more.

It seems like there might be an issue with the charging of this car, and the range may not be as advertised. The acceleration may also not meet expectations. The writer had a previous experience with a different car and regrets trading it in for this one. They have had some difficulties with the dealership and customer service. It's important to consider all factors before making a decision on purchasing an e-Golf.

Before I begin my review, I want to say that I am in the Navy and this is the first time I am writing a negative review about anything that I have bought in my life. Recently, I leased one of those 2015 Golf-e models. It looks and feels great, but unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations when it came to highway driving. The mile estimate on the sticker is not nearly accurate, and I found myself running out of juice much faster than anticipated. If you commute on the highway to and from work, I would recommend avoiding this car. However, if you primarily drive in town for less than 40 miles a day, this car may be a good fit for you. I experienced some range anxiety due to the fact that the battery runs out so fast when you don't have the break regenerating, but if you like driving in traffic, this car may be a good option for you. I will post a video on YouTube to show the true performance of the Golf-e on the highway, but overall, I would recommend this car for city driving. Unfortunately, I am stuck with a vehicle I cannot use for 3 years, but I hope this review helps others make an informed decision.

I recently switched from a Prius to the VW E Golf and I couldn't be happier! It's quick, fun, and I can even fit my 7'10'' surfboard in the car. Plus, the best part is that I never have to stop at a gas station again!

I understand your concerns about purchasing the e-Golf, given some of the issues others have reported. However, after test driving one, I was pleasantly surprised to see the range INCREASE as I drove. I found it to be a better option than the Leaf, Fiat, or SmartTwo. While I can't say I got the best deal, with the incentives, I am driving this for $200/month lease and 8¢/kWh. Basically, it costs me $1.90 to

I wanted to share my experience with trying out an EV. After over a month with the car, I am happy to say that I made the right choice. This car has the best interior and looks out of all the budget EVs. So far, it has been great for me and my family. With two kids, it has become our primary car for just going around town. Overall, it has been a fantastic experience with my first EV and I can't wait to see the next iteration of EVs!

Just bought mine in Los Angeles after driving a friend’s eGolf. I'm so happy with this car after driving back to Seattle in it. I even slept in it during charging stops during this 1300 mile road trip. This is the best car that I have owned in decades! I really love the SEL trim level.
