Common Toyota Fj cruiser 2009 problems
The Toyota FJ Cruiser, a midsize SUV produced from 2006 to 2014, has garnered a reputation for its unparalleled resale value and off-roading capabilities. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its common problems. This article will delve into these issues based on complaints from owners of the 2009 Toyota FJ Cruiser.
- Illuminated Check Engine Light: An illuminated check engine light, which can indicate a myriad of issues, has been a common problem for the 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser, and it is likely that the 2009 model year shares similar concerns. Many owners of the 2007 model have reported that they had to bring in their SUVs for routine service with less than 80,000 miles on their odometer because the engine oil had turned black. Some had to pay almost $7,000 for engine replacement, while others were told that several sensors were damaged, which cost about $400 to replace. There have also been reports of a misfiring engine, which persisted even after replacing the spark plugs and fuel pump and cleaning the air filter.
- Faulty Driveshaft: A broken driveshaft has been a common issue found in some 2010 FJ Cruisers. Owners of the affected models have reported that they heard a thumping noise under harsh braking conditions. Upon closer inspection, they found a broken driveshaft, which is a critical component responsible for transferring power from the transmission to the wheels.
- Shaky Steering Wheel: A shaky steering wheel is a common problem reported by FJ Cruiser owners. This issue can be caused by various factors, including loose steering components, worn-out bushings, or misaligned wheels. It is crucial to address this problem promptly, as it can affect the vehicle's handling and safety.
- Loose Foot Rest Pedal: Some FJ Cruiser owners have reported a loose foot rest pedal, which can be an annoyance and potentially affect the driver's control over the vehicle. This issue may be caused by worn-out or loose pedal pins or bushings, which can be replaced or tightened to resolve the problem.
- Bad Driveshaft: In addition to the faulty driveshaft mentioned earlier, some FJ Cruiser owners have reported a bad driveshaft, which can cause vibration and loud road noise. This issue can be caused by various factors, including worn-out universal joints, damaged CV joints, or a misaligned driveshaft.
- Shuddering Engine: A shuddering engine is another common problem reported by FJ Cruiser owners. This issue can be caused by various factors, including worn-out engine mounts, a damaged torque converter, or issues with the vehicle's transmission.
- Power Loss: Some FJ Cruiser owners have reported a loss of power, which can be caused by various factors, including a clogged air filter, a faulty fuel pump, or issues with the vehicle's ignition system.
- Excessive Exhaust Noise: An excessive exhaust noise can be a common problem for the FJ Cruiser, which can be caused by various factors, including a damaged exhaust manifold, a cracked exhaust pipe, or a faulty muffler.
- Weak Brakes: Some FJ Cruiser owners have reported weak brakes, which can be caused by various factors, including worn-out brake pads, a faulty brake master cylinder, or issues with the vehicle's brake lines.
- Ticking Noise: A ticking noise from the engine has been reported by some FJ Cruiser owners, which can be caused by various factors, including a faulty fuel injector, a damaged timing chain, or issues with the vehicle's valvetrain.
In conclusion, the Toyota FJ Cruiser, while known for its unparalleled resale value and off-roading capabilities, has its share of common problems. These issues, which range from a shaky steering wheel to a ticking noise from the engine, can affect the vehicle's performance, handling, and safety. It is crucial for FJ Cruiser owners to stay on top of their vehicle's maintenance and address any issues promptly to ensure the vehicle's longevity and reliability.

- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2008-2014 FJ Cruiser and Tacoma vehicles equipped with accessory wheels and tires installed by Toyota or dealers prior to the vehicle's first sale. The affected vehicles may list incorrect spare tire size and/or cold tire inflation information on the tire placard. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims for Passenger Cars."
- Consequence: If the spare tire is inflated to the incorrect pressure provided on the placard, tire failure may occur while it is being driven on, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: For the involved vehicles, overlay stickers to correct the tire placard will either be mailed to owners or provided to dealers for placement over the incorrect information on the placard. The recall is expected to begin in September 2014. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2007-2013 FJ Cruiser vehicles manufactured January 25, 2006 through February 23, 2013 and equipped with a Toyota Auxiliary Driving Lamp Kits mounted to the front bumper. These lamp assemblies include 55 watt bulbs and due to this wattage and mounting angle, the combination of the upper beam headlamps plus the auxiliary lamps are too bright and exceed the maximum light output allowed for an upper beam headlamp. Therefore, these vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, "Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment."
- Consequence: Light intensities above the maximum allowable limit could cause increased glare for oncoming traffic and increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the 55 watt bulbs with 35 watt bulbs, free of charge. The recall began on June 6, 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:ANCHORAGE
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2007 through 2013 FJ Cruiser passenger vehicles. The retractors for the front driver and passenger seat belts are mounted in the access door (rear door) panels of the vehicle. Due to insufficient strength of the access door panel, cracks may develop in the panel if the access door is repeatedly and forcefully closed over an extended period of time.
- Consequence: If cracks occur in the panel around the lower retractor anchor, the seat belt retractor could become detached, which could increase the risk of injury to an occupant in the event of a crash.
- Remedy: The safety recall began on June 6, 2013. Toyota will mail an interim letter to owners late in April 2013. Remedy notifications to the owners for the repair will begin in late May 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
- Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
- Consequence: If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
- Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: EQUIPMENT
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain Toyota Racing Development (TRD) brake kits, P/N PTR09-35070, and TRD High-Performance brake kits, P/N PTR09-35100, installed by Toyota vehicle processing centers and sold by Toyota dealers as an optional accessory for model year 2007 through 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser vehicles. The subject TRD brake kit is specifically designed for the front wheels of 2007-2012 model year FJ Cruiser vehicles. Due to the shape of the outer brake tube of the brake kit, the clearance between the outer brake tube and a TRD 16 inch 6-spoke alloy wheel is minimal. If wheel balance weights are installed in an incorrect location, there is a possibility that the outer brake tube could be damaged due to interference with the balance weight, and brake fluid could leak from the damaged tube.
- Consequence: If a brake tube becomes damaged and leaks fluid, it may result in increased stopping distances, and in some cases, loss of vehicle front braking performance, which could increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: All known owners of 2007-2012 model year FJ Cruiser vehicles will be notified by first class mail. If the vehicle is equipped with one of the TRD brake kits, the brake caliper outer brake tube will be replaced with a newly designed one at no charge. During this service, if necessary, the dealer will make wheel balance adjustments. This remedy will be performed even if the vehicle has original equipment 16 inch or 17 inch wheels or TRD 16 inch Beadlock ring type wheels, which are not affected by the condition, to assure sufficient clearance in the event wheels are changed at a later time. Notification to owners began on December 17, 2012. Owners may contact Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

Driving this vehicle is an absolute joy! I recently took it off-road with only 350 miles on it and it handled the steep and rutty terrain with ease. I particularly enjoyed the smooth transition from braking to accelerating when changing directions after a stop. Going back down Jones Pass Rd was a blast, especially when I jammed into 1st gear at 20 mph and did a 180 down to the next switchback. The FJ felt incredibly stable and handled the bumps like a pro. Even on pavement, the ride is smooth and not at all 'trucky'. And with 20 mpg on the highway, city, and mountain roads, it's a great choice. In fact, my previous 2.9L Ranger was no better than this!
-
If you're planning to go off-roading, consider the All Terrain Package. It comes with some very nice 16-inch wheels (which look different from the 17-inch ones), great shocks, a locking differential, A-trac, pre-cleaner, and a multi-information display. I ordered the TRD exhaust, which I think is a plus - it has a cool ellipse tip and sounds great. The FJ comes with black running boards, which won't work as rock rails, but will save you from car-level door dings. The ride quality is great for a 4x4. We've gone on some fun adventures and seen things that would have required some serious hiking. With the right mindset, the FJ can make a great primary vehicle. As a second vehicle to our German sedan, we couldn't be happier. It's hard to imagine the sedan is now our second choice when driving to work!
-
It may take some time to get used to the blind spots, but overall, I absolutely love this car! It's so much fun to drive, and the 4X4 feature is really nice. I have a friend with a Jeep Wrangler, and this car can go toe to toe with it off-road while being much more practical. There are a few things that could be improved, such as the seats not having a forward track for people getting into the back seat, and the rear windows not going down. While these may seem like small issues, the wind can whip through the truck like crazy. Additionally, it would be great if the back window could go down like with the 4 runner. However, I still highly recommend this vehicle! You should definitely consider buying it!
-
Toyota really outdid themselves with this vehicle! It's both safe and fun to drive. Plus, it's more capable, functional, and reliable than even Jeep or Hummer.
-
This vehicle may not be the best fit for families with infants or small children as it may not provide enough space for them.

I noticed that the paint on the outside of the FJ scratches easily, and the plastic interior scratches even easier. It's disappointing that for an off-road vehicle, the design seems cheap and poorly executed. Additionally, the premium gas at $2.98 a gallon seems excessive for a vehicle that only gets 15 miles in the city and 20 on the highway. On the bright side, the FJ rides nicely and has good pick-up when you need it. However, it's frustrating to have to run premium gas and worry about the paint. I also found that the windshield cracks easily due to the upright design, which is similar to the Hummer. Rocks don't skip off, which is surprising for an off-road vehicle. I had to fix 5 small dings before the last one gave way to a 16

I have owned several SUVs in the past, including Nissans and Jeeps, and recently purchased the FJ for my family's needs. While there are some design elements that could be improved, such as the dark interior and limited visibility, I have found that the FJ's performance in snowy conditions is not up to par. Despite trying different tires, I have found it to be unsafe to drive in these conditions, especially with the nervous anti-lock brakes. In comparison, my previous Xterra performed better, and the Jeep was the best. Additionally, I have found that the stain-proof seats can be difficult to clean due to dog hair getting caught in the open fibers. Overall, while the FJ has some areas for improvement, I am confident in my assessment of its performance in snowy conditions.

A salesman convinced me to buy this car. I enjoy offroading and he provided me with a lot of information about different makes and models, so I decided to go for it. However, I find the interior quite dark and cramped, with no sunroof and poor lighting. In comparison, the Hummer H3 and Jeep Wrangler are both more capable off-road. Additionally, the windshield is now cracked due to the poor 'flat' design, which makes it difficult to see out of.

I really enjoyed my experience, but I wish I had known that the value of a new vehicle drops to 25,000 or less as soon as you drive it off the lot. In the future, I will search for a one-year-old vehicle to avoid spending more than 23,000. I am disappointed that Toyota has lost a lifetime customer due to this issue. However, I will still keep my old toy trucks. They must have been designed by real engineers. Thanks for understanding.

Hi there! I was thinking about getting some extra medical coverage for my vehicle insurance. I've noticed that when people get in and out of the back seat, they tend to hit their heads. Also, the interior panels aren't quite up to Chevy's usual build quality and fit. Additionally, the front windshield wipers tend to chatter and not lay flat in cold weather, which can be a bit frustrating. Lastly, I've noticed that the exterior paint scratches pretty easily. Just thought I'd share my experience with you!
