2020 Ford Transit problems

ford logo

The Ford Transit is a family of light commercial vehicles manufactured by the Ford Motor Company since 1965, primarily as a cargo van, but also available in other configurations including a large passenger van (marketed as the Ford Tourneo in some markets since 1995), cutaway van chassis, and a pickup truck. The vehicle is also known as the Ford T-Series (T-150, T-250, T-350), a nomenclature shared with Ford's other light commercial vehicles, the Ford F-Series trucks, and the Ford E-Series chassis. As of 2015, 8 million Transit vans have been sold, making it the third best-selling van of all time and has been produced across four basic platform generations (debuting in 1965, 1986, 2000, and 2013 respectively), with various "facelift" versions of each.

The first product of the merged Ford of Europe, the Transit was originally marketed in Western Europe and Australia. By the end of the twentieth century, it was marketed nearly globally with the exception of North America until 2013 when it replaced the Ford E-Series van. Upon its introduction in North America, the Transit quickly became the best-selling van of any type in the United States, minivan sales included.

That mirrors the success the Transit has achieved in Europe, where it has been the best-selling light commercial vehicle for forty years, and in some countries the term "Transit" has passed into common usage as a generic trademark applying to any light commercial van in the Transit's size bracket.

Common 2020 Ford Transit problems

The 2020 Ford Transit is a highly-rated full-size van that is known for its comfort, storage space, and reliability. However, there are a few common problems that have been reported by owners of this vehicle.

One of the most common problems with the 2020 Ford Transit is premature brake wear. This issue has been reported by several owners, with an average cost to fix of $900 and an average mileage of 33,000 miles. This can be a serious safety concern, as it can affect the vehicle's ability to stop properly.

Another issue that has been reported with the 2020 Ford Transit is transmission problems. While the transmission on this vehicle is generally reliable, there have been some reports of rough shifting and transmission failure, which can make it difficult or even impossible to drive the vehicle. These issues are most commonly reported in the 2015, 2016, and 2017 models of the Ford Transit.

In addition to these issues, there have also been reports of problems with the cooling fan system and damaged turbo actuator problems in the Ford Transit Custom, which is a variant of the Ford Transit. These issues can cause the vehicle to overheat or lose performance, which can be a major inconvenience for drivers.

Overall, the 2020 Ford Transit is a reliable and capable vehicle, but like any vehicle, it is not immune to problems. It is important for owners to be aware of these common issues and to address them promptly if they occur. By staying on top of maintenance and repairs, drivers can help ensure that their Ford Transit remains a safe and reliable vehicle for years to come.

STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
  • VIN: 1FTBR2C86LK
  • Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: In march 2024 my vehicle unexpectedly cutoff on [XXX] heading into wash. Dc. Called a tow to my mechanic and had the alternator and battery replaced. Mechanic noticed that the vehicles battery light remained and investigated further. After amonth in the shop we observed that components were utilizing battery power when the system should be off. We heard mechanical diagnostic sounds, and the battery would not maintain a charge after being driven. Upon getting it home and a day later upon jump starting again and when i began to turn the wheel, a violent jerking response came from the steering column. Cheched the dash and several popup windows had to be closed. AWD, BATTERY, and low fuel. There was also the wrench light on the dash itself. Went on the Ford forum and many others were describing the same issues, mainly battery drain. I thought i had disconnected the cargo area lights only to find out i did disconnect part but not them all only to further discover Ford engineered the vehicle where most of the features that were described in the forum not so accessible such as the fuse panel 'fuse 32' because theres no clear indication of where that is exactly on the diagrams. Ive have pretty much used the vehicle on occasions where im moving my equipment. As of september, i received a letter from fords "Customer Satisfaction Program" in which i responded only to be told from Bannister Ford that the Software Update that would fix High-Torque launches would not be installed because the battery light was on. Now to me, this sounds like a catch-22 because the issue is with their electrical design where if one problem occurs they have a fix but you wont get it until you fix the prom (ideally with them). all the while I'm setting up the appointment im being served ads for add-on services. Its october 2024 and i am just sick of this van. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-15
  • VIN: 1FTBW3U87LK
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: I have encountered an issue multiple times now on multiple Ford Transit vans. The "lug wrench" included with the vehicle as part of the spare tire tool kit does not allow me to remove the lug nuts. I am a Fleet customer and I own many Ford Transit AWD vans. When they are brand new, the spare tire lug wrench barely reaches the lug nut as it is not a very deep socket. After a couple of tire rotations I believe the lug studs possibly stretch slightly and the lug wrench tool no longer reaches the lug nut. This issue has caused my drivers to be stranded multiple times. I believe it is an oversight by Ford and it should be addressed. Thank you

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-05
  • VIN: 1FTBR2Y87LK
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: We own a fleet of these vans and 5 out of the last 7 purchased from 2020-2023 have had total rear brake system failure. The calipers are not retracting and are overheating and freezing up the rear brake system. In some cases leaving our employee(s) stranded on the side of the road in the middle of winter storm waiting to get towed putting their safety at risk. The problem has been reproduced as it has happened on 5 of the last 7 vehicles we purchased. Our local Ford dealer has inspected these issues and we contacted the Ford Consumer phone today - spoke with Rena at Ford on 6/19/24 at approximately 2pm - 2:15pm PDT. No warning lamps or message alerts. Brakes are making a squeaky noise and hot smell prior to seizing. We have had to pay thousands of dollars for some of these repairs and towing. We wanted to alert Ford and you as we are noticing an alarming trend. In speaking with Ford Motor Company, they correlate this issue as a maintenance issue but if it was a maintenance issue, the front brakes would have failed before the rear. I will be completing this form for the additional VIN numbers. Thank you.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-22
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1FTBR3X85LK
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: THIS IS A SECOND CASE FOR A DIFFERENT VIN WITH THE SAME ISSUE. 11524889. The battery's junction box in the engine compartment is melting. While I was driving, I heard a loud pop, I opened the hood, and saw smoke coming from the junction box. I noticed the box was melting around a fuse. The melting is significant, and the vehicle looked to be on fire. The smoke stopped, but I feel the vehicle could easily have caught on fire completely. There are recalls for this same exact issue but for other Ford Models. I have a fleet of these vans, and this has now occurred to 6 of them. I know other owners that this occurred to as well. I have called Ford Goodwill and they have declined to cover it under the 3-year, extended warranty. The melting was so bad on one that the actual harness was burnt as well. This is a dangerous issue that Ford already knows this happens. I have receipts for all of these repairs and the technician acknowledging the junction box melting. I have emails from Ford where they apologize for the issue, and they say they cannot cover it under warranty. They refuse to comment on the safety danger this poses on all. This is an amazon delivery van and there are thousands of these that could catch fire in someone's house or business.

  • Summary: National Van Builders, Inc. (National Van Builders) is recalling certain vehicles based on 2019-2020 Ford Transit and 2019 Ram Promaster vans equipped with Freedman GO-ES foldaway seats.
