2017 Mitsubishi Mirage problems

mitsubishi logo

The Mitsubishi Mirage is a range of cars produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi from 1978 until 2003 and again since 2012. The hatchback models produced between 1978 and 2003 were classified as subcompact cars, while the sedan and station wagon models, marketed prominently as the Mitsubishi Lancer, were the compact offerings. The liftback introduced in 1988 complemented the sedan as an additional compact offering, and the coupé of 1991 fitted in with the subcompact range. The current Mirage model is a subcompact hatchback and sedan and it replaces the Mitsubishi Colt sold between 2002 and 2012.

Nameplate history

The Mirage has a complicated marketing history, with a varied and much convoluted naming convention that differed substantially depending on the market. Mitsubishi used the Mirage name for all five generations in Japan, with all but the first series badged as such in the United States. However, other markets often utilized the name Mitsubishi Colt and sedan variants of the Mirage have been widely sold as the Mitsubishi Lancer—including in Japan where the two retailed alongside one another. In Japan, the Mirage was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.

In the United States and Canada, the first four generations were sold through a venture with Chrysler as the Dodge Colt and the similar Plymouth-badged Champ and Colt. Later, the venture brought the Eagle Vista and Summit branded models which sold alongside the aforementioned. Confusingly, Chrysler has also offered an unrelated Dodge Lancer at various stages between the 1950s and 1980s. However, when DaimlerChrysler briefly controlled Mitsubishi through the DaimlerChrysler-Mitsubishi alliance from 2000 through to 2004, the license to the "Lancer" name was relinquished to Mitsubishi for usage in North America. Thus, after the fifth and final generation Mirage, replacement models in North America have adopted the new name.

Mitsubishi introduced replacements for the fifth series of Mirage, starting in 2000 with a new generation of Lancer—now larger, having moved up to the compact segment. Then in 2002, a subcompact five-door hatchback badged Colt globally became available. By 2003, the Mirage and its derivatives had been completely phased out of mainstream Japanese production. For the 2002-era Colt's replacement in 2012, Mitsubishi decided to resurrect the Mirage name internationally for a new sixth generation model.

With the rising popularity of boxy subcompact SUVs in Japan, the Mirage nameplate was used on a domestic market-only model called the Mirage Dingo, from 1999. The Dingo was facelifted in 2001 and canceled in 2003. However, New Zealand sold a very different Mirage from 2002—a rebadged Dutch-manufactured Mitsubishi Space Star labeled Mirage Space Star. This vehicle was not very popular and was discontinued in 2003.

Common 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage problems

The Mitsubishi Mirage, a compact vehicle designed as a hatchback, has had its fair share of issues over the years. While it's known for its affordable price and good fuel economy, some model years have been plagued with problems that have left car owners frustrated. Here are some of the most common problems with the 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage, based on complaints from owners:

  • Premature Brake Wear: The 2017 Mirage has been reported to have issues with premature brake wear, with some owners reporting that they had to replace their brakes at as low as 22,000 miles. This issue can be costly to fix, with an average cost of $900.
  • Clutch Worn Out Quickly: Another common problem with the 2017 Mirage is that the clutch wears out quickly. This issue can be particularly frustrating for owners who use their cars for city driving, as the constant stop-and-go can exacerbate the problem. The average cost to fix this issue is $2,300.
  • Faulty Hinges: Some owners of the 2017 Mirage have reported issues with the hinges on the doors, with some doors needing to be replaced entirely. This issue can be costly to fix, with an average cost of $2,000.
  • Difficulty Working with the Opening and Closing System: Some owners of the Mirage have reported issues with the opening and closing system on their cars. This issue can be frustrating and can make it difficult to get in and out of the car.
  • Electrical System Troubles: Some owners of the Mirage have reported issues with the electrical system on their cars. This issue can be particularly frustrating, as it can affect a wide range of functions in the car, from the radio to the lights.
  • Faults with the Braking Construction: Some owners of the Mirage have reported issues with the braking construction on their cars. This issue can be particularly dangerous, as it can affect the car's ability to stop properly.

It's worth noting that while these issues have been reported by some owners of the 2017 Mirage, not all cars of this model year will experience these problems. However, if you're considering buying a used 2017 Mirage, it's important to be aware of these potential issues and to have any car you're considering purchasing inspected by a qualified mechanic before making a final decision.

However, the weak, vibrating, and incredibly noisy three-cylinder engine provides sluggish acceleration, handling is clumsy, and the cabin is depressingly low-rent. Further lowering its standing is its poor score in the IIHS small-overlap crash test. The Mirage began as a small car with a jumpy, uncomfortable ride.

How many miles will a 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage last?

With proper care, regular maintenance, and attention to driving conditions, it's not uncommon for a Mitsubishi Mirage to last well over 100,000 miles and even reach 200,000 miles or more.

Is a Mitsubishi Mirage a reliable vehicle?

According to repairpal.com, the Mitsubishi Mirage scores 4. ⁄10. This number places it 7th out of 21 compact vehicles. Although the Mitsubishi Mirage has some years that struggle, it's generally dependable and offers excellent value for the price.

AFTER ABOUT FIVE MINUTES A RESET WILL START AND, EVEN THOUGH I'M STILL DRIVING, ALL THE DASH LIGHTS AND TEST WILL GO THROUGH THE CYCLE USUALLY RESERVED FOR WHEN I START THE CAR. IF I HAPPEN TO TURN OFF THE CAR WHILE IT IS IN THIS SORT OF OUTAGE, IT WILL REQUIRE A JUMP TO START. THE RADIO WILL FORGET ITS STATIONS, AND THE CLOCK WILL NEED TO HAVE THE TIME SET AGAIN. I HAVE TRIED MY OWN REMEDIES (LIKE JIGGLING THE FUSE BOX (WHICH DOES NOT SEEM WELL ATTACHED), AND WIGGLING WIRES) TRYING TO TRACK DOWN THE PROBELM WITH NO SUCCESS. MY PRIVATE MECHANIC SAYS THAT HE HAS SEEN THIS IN OTHER MIRAGES AND NEVER FOUND THE CAUSE. IT ONLY HAPPENS ABOUT A SECOND AFTER A LARGE BUMP OR HEAVY REPEATED VIBRATIONS. I BOUGHT THE CAR USED (FROM ENTERPRISE RENTALS), HAVE OWNED IT ABOUT A YEAR, AND IT HAS HAPPENED FOUR TIMES. THANK YOU FOR THE GOOD WORK YOU DO. I HOPE THIS HELPS.

2017 Mitsubishi Mirage recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage.

2017-10-30
  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Mirage vehicles. The internal acceleration sensor in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) can misinterpret vibrations such as those from poor road conditions or a flat tire to be a sensor error thereby disabling the air bags from deploying in a crash.
  • Consequence: Air bags that do not deploy as designed in a crash increase the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the SRS-ECU software, free of charge. The recall began on November 10, 2017. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-17-006.
2016-09-19
  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2017 Mirage vehicles manufactured October 28, 2015, to August 4, 2016 and equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps. The affected vehicles may have been assembled without the headlight horizontal adjustment lockout clips properly secured. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirement of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
  • Consequence: Without the horizontal adjustment locking clip being secured, the headlight can be adjusted to either reduce the driver's visibility or blind oncoming vehicles. Both conditions can increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will secure the horizontal locking clips as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on September 3, 2016. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-16-008.

Negative 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage car reviews

  1. Omer Grady 2024-06-20

I want to start by saying that I purchased this car used, and unfortunately, I have experienced a number of issues with it. The radiator cap wouldn't stay tight, which led to thermostat issues. Additionally, the suspension is now damaged, the motor has a tic, and it started blowing smoke yesterday. It throws VVT codes, and there are also electrical issues, such as the windows rolling down on their own. I didn't have high expectations for the car, but I hoped it wouldn't be this problematic. I have taken good care of it, including a full fluid change when I bought it, and always changing the oil and filter early. I even ran injector cleaner through it. However, the cost of repairs in the last 11k miles has been significant, and I could have just bought a different car for the same amount. Unfortunately, the gas mileage is not worth the trouble.

  2. Brant Mayer 2024-04-26

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. While it may not have the most horsepower, I've actually found it to be a great investment. In fact, it's saved me a lot of money on fuel costs over the past year!

  3. Kaleigh Nitzsche 2024-01-05

The Mitsubishi Mirage is the perfect car for me. It has all the necessary features such as a radio, CD player, heat and a/c. Winter driving used to scare me, but with the Mirage, I am confident that I can handle any weather condition. Although some may find it amusing that a riding lawnmower has more horsepower, I am not concerned as the Mirage is the best car for the money I have to spend. I will update after a snow drive to showcase its capabilities. Thank you for your time.

Positive 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage car reviews

  1. Magnus Bauch 2024-10-16

If you're not one for sudden high-speed maneuvers, the Mirage still performs well in everyday situations. It's easy to keep up with traffic, stops smoothly, and is surprisingly quiet and comfortable for its class. Plus, it's a blast to drive in tight spaces! The Mirage also boasts super warranties and a low purchase price. I've driven it on windy highways in east central Illinois with no issues. I did my research before buying, but the Mirage won me over with its three-cylinder engine, which reminds me of a motorcycle I used to own. After 5+ years and over 44k miles, I wouldn't change a thing about this car. It's still fun to drive, and the mileage has even gone up slightly since I've been driving more in town. Mitsubishi's warranty is unbeatable, with 5 years and 100k miles of coverage. And the best part? After 5+ years and 44k miles, not a single thing has gone wrong. No bulbs, no loose screws, nothing at all! For me, reliability is more important than high horsepower or big tires. Even after 6-1/2 years and 48k miles, I still haven't had any issues to report. The original battery is still going strong. I don't drive as much anymore, but the Mirage still gets high 30's in town. After seven years, three months, and 50,100 miles, I still love my Mirage and haven't had a single problem. I might even get a new battery just to be proactive!

Coming from driving trucks all the time, the 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage provides plenty of room to easily get in and out. The interior looks good and it's a basic car with some great options. Ours has only 231 miles on it and we drove it for an hour and a half as soon as we got it. Not bad for a small car! We are getting 41 mpg and love the gas mileage. The driver's side has plenty of room and the engine noise is barely noticeable inside the car. Compared to other small cars, it's just like any other. The interior of the car is made out of the same materials as all new cars and looks good. We don't like the carpet and the lack of an armrest between the front seats, but we do like that there are 7 places to put your drinks. The style of the outside looks good and the ride of the car is just like most little cars. Overall, it's a good little car to drive and save money. You can't go wrong with it. We paid $10,678 before financing, which is not bad for a new car with a 100,000 mile warranty. Go test drive one for yourself!

I purchased a 2017 Mirage G4 five years ago and it has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. In my 33 years of owning Buick, Ford, Chrysler, Dodge and Nissan, I have never had to fix anything on it. Currently, it has 40k miles and still runs like a dream. Recently, I needed a second car and decided to purchase the 2019 Mirage ES hatchback. It is a fantastic vehicle with a great price, comfortable, quiet, and most importantly, it is great on gas. When purchasing a car, I always look for the best warranty and gas mileage. I am surprised by the negative reviews I have seen about this car. Other brands may be suggested as better, but they do not come with the standard Mitsubishi 5 year 50k mile warranty. I always buy used cars with low mileage from a dealer. This car came with low mileage of 9k and 3 years 41k miles left on the factory warranty. Additionally, Mitsubishi extended the warranty to 6 years from the date of purchase and 100k miles for $1800. There is no interest if paid in 12 months. They even delivered all the paperwork to sign to my driveway. My 21-year-old son, who hates driving, loves this vehicle. I highly recommend considering this car if you are looking for a reliable work car that uses minimal gas and is great for travel. I can drive from Texas to Ohio and back on only $160 worth of gas (currently priced at almost $3 a gallon). The rear seat flips down, unlike the regular compact Mitsubishi, the trunk is deep and holds a lot, it has a back-up camera, a touchscreen radio, cruise control (best for travel), and Bluetooth for hands-free (which can even get you a discount on car insurance).

I bought my 2017 Mirage GT in February 2018 for $6,000 with only 8,000 miles on it. I have been driving it for almost 6 years now and have put 52,000 miles on it, and I am happy to say that I have not had any issues with this vehicle! The build quality is not the best, but that is to be expected from a vehicle that started at around $12k back in 2017. At 46,000 miles, I replaced the original tires, brakes, and battery, but everything else is still original. I am cautious about the bad reputation of CVTs, so I had the transmission flush done at 35,000 miles. This car is an excellent commuter, averaging 37 MPG and 45 on the freeway on long drives. I only need to fill it up less than 2 times a month for $30, even with these gas prices. The car takes 2.7 quarts of oil, and you can change your own oil and do your own maintenance for under $15 an oil change! The Apple CarPlay, heated seats, fast key system, push-button start, and rearview camera are selling points for this vehicle, and everything is holding up exceptionally well! If you need a first vehicle or a reliable car for first-time drivers, especially with the 10-year, 100k miles warranty, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. I fell in love with Mitsubishi's bang for the buck and even bought a 2018 Outlander for the family one year after owning the Mirage. I highly recommend it. Yes, it's small, and it's not a race car, and the build quality is not the best, but it has A/C, many creature comforts, still keeps up in traffic, returns excellent gas mileage, costs pennies to maintain, and does it all reliably. Need I say more? If you find one of these in today's market for under 6k with low miles, just buy it. Thanks!

What a great little car! It's a shame that most Americans don't understand its value. There are so many fantastic small cars in Europe and Asia that unfortunately never make it to the US. One car that could really compete with the Mirage is the Kia Picanto. It would be wonderful if Kia decided to bring this little gem to the US market. Citroen, Ford, Peugeot, VW, and Renault all have many great small cars on European streets. However, I have no problem keeping up with traffic in my Mirage, and I even get an impressive 44 mpg on the highway!
