2011 Chevrolet Traverse problems
The Chevrolet Traverse is a full-size crossover SUV with three-row seating built by General Motors. It is built on the same platform as the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave, known as the Lambda platform for the first generation, and the C1XX for the second generation. It also shares the C1XX platform with the Cadillac XT6. It is the successor to the TrailBlazer body-on-frame SUV and the Uplander minivan.
The second-generation model debuted in showrooms in the summer of 2017. Starting with the 2019 model year, the Traverse was slotted above the new mid-size Chevrolet Blazer as part of Chevrolet's plans to expand its SUV lineup.
The Traverse name was originally used for a concept car at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but that concept gave way when the Equinox launched for the 2005 model year.

STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-27
- VIN: 1GNKVGED8BJ
- Components: STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: Components related to timing chain failed, and vehicle is currently available with plans to sell to a salvage yard by 10/25/24. My 9 year old and I were at risk of collision when the vehicle failed. I was driving approximately 70-75 mph when we started to lose power. At 65 mph, I managed to cross 2 lanes of highway traffic and stopped on the shoulder. I turned off my vehicle and waited several minutes, hoping it would help reset or cool off a component or something. I had to try a couple of times before it started, and I attempted to drive as safely as I could, made it to 60 mph before it stopped running completely. I had to pull hard on the steering wheel to get to the shoulder again, only this time, the shoulder was pinched off in front of us and around a small blind spot behind us. I had my daughter move to the side closer to the cement barrier while waiting for a tow truck. She became very nervous about how close some of the other vehicles got. Afterwards, the error codes indicated several components pointing to a timing chain problem. I had the timing chain repaired around April or May of 2023 by a certified mechanic. I watched the oil life percentage and oil temperature gauge consistently. Everything indicated as normal, but I had difficulty pulling out the dipstick to check the oil level. Since it was hard to get a good reading, I tried to add some oil and recheck. The oil cap was nearly impossible to open, so I decided to wait for an oil tech to do it. Around 40-50% oil life, I had planned to have the oil changed. In spite of my efforts to maintain proper oil quality, the oil cap had to be opened with a wrench. Smoke rose out and dried out oil residue lined the inner walls. It was about a quart low. I don’t drive hard on it and it had only been around 3,000 miles between oil changes. It had been one year since the timing chain was replaced. Error codes remain and the vehicle runs rough if it stays on long enough after much effort to start it.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-06
- VIN: 1GNKRFED7BJ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
- Summary: This vehicle is notorious for multiple electrical failures. The alternator fried the battery fried, both of which were replaced. This vehicle still wouldn't start. The wiring harness to the PCM is notorious for having shorts. The pcm itself is notorious for going out really early. This vehicle is almost undrivable and it dies while you're in the middle of driving where you can't stop. I do not know how this vehicle has been kept on the market without being recalled. I do not know how more people haven't been in accidents because of it. And even worse, it's notorious for the airbags messing up. I think I would be more understanding if it weren't for the fact that this vehicle has been well maintained. It has regular maintenance. It's never overdue for an oil change or a fluid top up. I have children that ride in this vehicle and now I have to worry about their safety.

- Summary: side curtain airbags deployed driving 70 mph on I94 outside of Monticello, MN after drifting onto the rumble strip. Upon turning back there was a loud bang from the side airbags deploying. The drivers side came down and hit my daughter in the side of the head, the passenger side didn't come down all the way missing my 86 year old Mom as she is 5 ft tall. My daugther by some miracle didn't panic and veer into other traffic lanes with other vehicles driving 70 mph. GM is denying a problem and insinuating that something other than defect caused the airbags to deploy, even though there is nothing but rumble strips on the section of road. They are blaming some minor scraps on the side of the vehicle that were existing on a 2011 Traverse.

This is a recall (Recall No. 14V266000 Recall Date; 05-20-2014) for these vehicles manufactured June 6, 2008 thru May 14, 2014 but as I was told by GMC not for my vehicle VIN number. I was told by them I may have special coverage but I would have to have it inspected by a dealership. The dealership told me it would be $195 for them to look at it. I then called GMC back and spoke with someone else who told me that special coverage would not cover the seat belt and basically I was out of luck. This is obviously a problem with their seatbelts and had I been in an accident I could have been seriously injured they should have to replace it at no cost to me.

Very hard to maneuver as vehicle coasted to stop at side of road. Put all occupants in a dangerous situation due to significantly reduced vehicle control. Vehicle would not re-start (or attempt to turn over) after failure. Towed to local shop. Local, trusted auto service center reported engine had “locked up” potentially due to low oil pressure. Again, no indication lights and routine, full oil service completed just 2500 miles prior. Engine was replaced after cost-benefit analysis of current car market prices and availability and the well-maintained condition of the vehicle overall. Concerns: Loss of control. This is a sweet ride. Not a misspelling, the interior is larger than some motels. I moved out of a Toyota and I am amazed at the quality of this vehicle. It has a solid ride, excellent handling, is fun to drive, and easy to maneuver. My job puts me in dozens of rental cars in a year, and after driving a Traverse, I immediately started looking to buy. It is the nicest overall vehicle I have been exposed to in the last 5 years. GM really got this one right!
-
This car has been fantastic in all areas, requiring very little unscheduled maintenance despite having 1360000 miles on the clock.
-
I completely understand that 14mpg can be concerning, but I'm so glad to hear that you love everything else about the vehicle!
-
So glad to hear that you're enjoying your purchase so far! The 3rd row seat sounds like a lifesaver with the kids. It's great that you'll be able to tow a 3500 lb. camper next spring and I hope the vehicle performs well for you. There's definitely a lot of room and it sounds like it drives nicely. It's impressive that you were able to get such a good deal on the LS trim, and the AWD drive should come in handy on wet roads. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I have a 2011 Traverse LS with 103000 miles and it has been a great ride, especially on the highway. Despite a faulty AC control switch that cost $450, we have not experienced any major mechanical problems, including those that some have reported with the engine or transmission. I strongly disagree with the notion that it is cheaply made, as some have suggested. Although the FM radio recently stopped working, the AM and Sirius radio still function properly. Overall, I do not regret my purchase due to the wonderful interior space, despite the poor rear visibility when backing out.

We purchased this 2011 Traverse in June of 2015 from a one owner. At the time, we thought it was a good buy. Unfortunately, we have had some issues with it. We have had to replace the water pump, the power steering system, and now the whole power steering rack is out. The dealership has quoted us $1,800 for the repair. It is surprising to us that this has happened with less than 50,000 miles on the vehicle. We have read that this is a common issue with this model. It would be great if Chevrolet could investigate this issue and possibly issue a recall. We just want to warn potential buyers to be aware of this issue. Thank you for your time.

Despite perfect maintenance with records to verify, my engine failed at 66,000 miles. After a two-month dispute with GM, they finally provided me with a $2,500 voucher for a new vehicle. However, I have decided to switch to Toyota due to their superior build quality, value, and customer service.

Learn from my mistake. As a proud patriot, I made the decision to support the US car industry by purchasing an American-made SUV, the Chevy Traverse, instead of the Honda Pilot when my family grew in size eight years ago. Unfortunately, I have experienced several issues with the car over the years. At the second year mark, I was warned of an oil leakage, which eventually had to be fixed at the fourth year. Although I was able to get it fixed without charge, the shop had to remove the entire engine to find the problem, leaving a lasting impression on me. In the past two years, which are seven and eight years after purchasing the car, I have experienced a nightmare of issues, including broken seat buckles twice, a broken AC, malfunctioning windows control, and a broken engine mount, all of which have cost me around $2400. These issues have occurred with less than 100,000 miles on the car, and I still need to use it for at least another two or three years. While I love this country, I regret my decision to show my patriotism by purchasing this car.

Avoid purchasing a Chevy Traverse. Our 2009 LTZ model has been plagued with issues since we acquired it a year ago.

Although I have had some negative experiences with other brands, I have found that Ford trucks are the most dependable and have the best trade-in value. I still own a 2000 Power Stroke F350 that has been driven frequently for 15 years and has 170,000 miles on it. The air conditioning still works great and has never needed to be refilled, and the only repairs I have had to make were to the alternator and cam positioning sensor, which only cost me $250 over the course of 15 years. I regret betraying Ford and will be going back to their trucks in the future.
