2009 Volkswagen Tiguan problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Tiguan (German pronunciation: ) is a series of cars produced by German manufacturer Volkswagen since 2007, sitting between the smaller T-Roc and the larger Touareg in the company's crossover SUV range. The first generation was based on the PQ46 platform, while the second generation, released in 2016, utilizes the Volkswagen Group MQB A2 platform. It is generally considered to be a medium-sized SUV in Europe, while in North America it is considered to be a compact crossover.

The name Tiguan is a portmanteau of the German words Tiger ("tiger") and Leguan ("iguana") and won a naming contest by German car magazine publisher Auto Bild—from a field of names that also included Namib, Rockton, Samun and Nanuk.

As of the spring of 2020, six million units had been sold worldwide, with 910,926 units being manufactured in 2019 alone, making the Tiguan the best-selling car overall in the Volkswagen Group. It was also the best-selling SUV in Europe.

Its larger counterparts include the Tiguan Allspace, a long-wheelbase family-oriented version of the Tiguan with three-row seating, and the Tiguan X, a coupé SUV.

Common 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan problems

The Volkswagen Tiguan, introduced in 2008, has been a popular choice among SUV buyers. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. This article will focus on the 2009 model, which has been reported to have several issues.

One of the most prevalent problems in the 2009 Tiguan is the timing chain tensioner, which tends to cost around $3200 to fix and happens around 89,000 miles. This issue can lead to engine damage, and the best way to fix it is by replacing the engine or the timing chain tensioner.

Another common problem reported in the 2009 Tiguan is engine failure, which can cost an average of $3900 to fix and tends to occur around 96,000 miles. The most common solutions for engine failure include replacing the engine, decoking the valves, replacing the rear seal and PCV valve, and replacing the timing chain.

Additionally, several reviewers have reported issues with the sunroof drainage tubes, which can lead to leakage. This problem has been so prevalent that there was a VW class action lawsuit several years ago for this issue.

Some owners have also reported issues with the injector seals, T8 fuel injector harness, engine airbox, brake line, and intake manifold gasket.

While the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan has amassed the most complaints, the 2011 model is considered the worst due to the high cost of repairs and the low mileage at which most issues occur.

Despite these issues, the Tiguan has been praised for its value and driveability, with one reviewer noting that it has more value and driveability than other same-class vehicles, including the Mazda CX-5, Jeep Cherokee, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, and Chevy Equinox.

In summary, the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan has several common problems, including timing chain tensioner issues, engine failure, and sunroof leakage. However, despite these issues, the Tiguan has been praised for its value and driveability, making it a popular choice among SUV buyers.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-17
  • VIN: WVGAV75N79W
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine reached 100k miles in the second week of April 2022. After that, I tried to turn on the vehicle, and the engine did not respond. I took my car to the mechanic, and he told me that the car needed an engine replacement. This is very strange since the vehicle had an excellent maintenance schedule, and I usually, this type of car last longer. That engine issue could have caused a severe accident on the road, and fortunately, it never happened. The timing belt might have an issue there, but I had very little information from the engine codes since I did not have an indicator earlier. It just appeared like that. I feel that this type of issue is unfair. After having more than four cars with way more miles, this has never happened, and on average, a Tiguan engine should last at least 150k miles according to the statistics of the vehicle model and year. I feel upset and disappointed with this vehicle model since the cost of replacing the engine cost around 6000$, and I am an international student with no money to do that repair. I feel helpless, and VW told me the only way to get a recall of this car is through a report from the NHTSA, which would be fair given the circumstances I have been through. The only thing I request is to generate a recall for this vehicle if possible. I hope some reads this, and I appreciate the work you do. Thanks

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-11-25
  • VIN: WVGAV75N19W
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: VW TIGUAN 09 PURCHASED AS NEW. ONLY 50K MILES ON IT WHEN CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ENCOUNTERED. SOON AFTER (LAST WEEK, NOV 25 2019), ENGINE STALLED WHILE ACCELERATING OUT OF SECOND GEAR AND WAS SEIZED. INDEPENDENT MECHANIC SAID IT WOULD COST 5,800 TO REBUILD ENGINE. WHILE DOING MY OWN INDEPENDENT RESEARCH, DISCOVERED THE COMPLAINTS HERE DETAILING PRECISELY THE SAME ISSUE (TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER FAILURE) THAT WAS DESCRIBED TO ME BY MY MECHANIC. THEN DISCOVERED THAT THERE IS A CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT REIMBURSEMENT (HTTPS://TIMINGCHAINLITIGATION.COM/) FOR THIS ISSUE THAT I AM NO LONGER ELIGIBLE FOR BECAUSE JAN 25 2019 FILING DEADLINE WAS NOT MET - KEEP IN MIND THAT MY ENGINE FAILED ONE WEEK AGO (11/25/2019) WITH ONLY 50K MILES ON IT. I TOO, NEVER RECEIVED A CLASS ACTION NOTICE IN THE MAIL. AFTER CALLING THE CLASS ACTION HOTLINE, I WAS TOLD TO SEND AN EMAIL TO THE LAWSUIT SETTLEMENT ADMINISTRATOR REQUESTING A FILING DEADLINE EXCEPTION. UNLIKELY THAT ANY OF THIS WILL WORK IN MY FAVOR. BUT I TOO, LIKE MANY OTHERS HAVE BEEN UNNECESSARILY BURDENED BY VOLKSWAGEN'S NEGLIGENT HANDLING OF THIS MAJOR DEFECT. IT'S UNFORTUNATE THAT CUSTOMERS LIKE MYSELF ARE NOW SADDLED WITH THIS COMPLETE LOSS.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-08-22
  • VIN: WVGAV75N39W
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: MY 2009 VW TIGUAN ENGINE FAILED AS I WAS DRIVING TO WORK 35 MPH, IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, OUT OF NOWHERE MY CAR ENGINE MADE SCARY CRUMBLY NOISE AND SUDDENLY DIED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TRAFFIC; COMPLETELY DEAD. I WAS SCARED TO DEATH AND IF I DIDN'T REACT FAST TO PUT EMERGENCY LIGHTS ON, I COULD HAVE BEEN PLOWED BY A BIG TRUCK BEHIND ME. THERE WERE CARS PARKED ON EACH SIDE OF THE STREET, AND NO PLACE TO PULL OVER. I WAS CLOSE TO WORK BUT WAS STRANDED ON THE STREET WITH HIGH TRAFFIC BECAUSE I COULDN'T MOVE THE CAR. I TRIED TO TURN IT ON BUT AGAIN SAME RUMBLING SOUND AND DEAD AGAIN. I CALLED A FRIEND TO HELP ME PUSH THE CAR TO MY EMPLOYER'S PARKING LOT SO I COULD BE SAFE. AFTER WORK I CALLED AAA FOR ASSISTANCE AND THEY COULDN'T START THE CAR SO IT WAS THEN TOWED TO THE PLACE I LIVE. THEY ALSO CONCLUDED THAT THE ENGINE IS THE PROBLEM. THAT IS WHEN I STARTED RESEARCHING ABOUT IT AND FOUND OUT THERE WAS A SETTLEMENT FOR TIMING CHAIN THAT I WAS NEVER INFORMED ABOUT AND MY VIN GOT MATCHED. I BOUGHT THIS CAR ON 07/31/2018, IT WAS WELL MAINTAINED SINCE THEN AND NO ISSUES PRIOR TO THIS. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE SINCE I HAD NO PRIOR WARNING AND COULD HAVE KILLED SOMEONE OR SOMEONE COULD HAVE KILLED ME IN THE ACCIDENT. I AM ASKING YOU TO HELP ME FIGURE THIS OUT AND HELP FIX THE ENGINE PROBLEM ON MY VEHICLE. I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH HOW SCARED AND CONCERNED I AM SINCE THEN ESPECIALLY BECAUSE I HAVE TWO CHILDREN THAT I DRIVE IN THIS SAME CAR AND I THOUGHT THIS CAR IS SAFE FOR THEM AND MYSELF AND EVERYONE AROUND ME WHEN I'M IN TRAFFIC. I LOVE THIS CAR BUT NOW NEITHER I CAN DRIVE IT NOR I FEEL SAFE ANY LONGER IN IT. THIS CAR IS EVERYTHING TO ME AND WITHOUT IT I CAN'T GO TO WORK AND MAKE MONEY OR GO TO PICK UP GROCERIES. I'M A SINGLE MOM AND NO FAMILY AROUND AND I ENTIRELY DEPEND ON THIS CAR TO MAKE THE LIFE FOR MY CHILDREN AS STABLE AS POSSIBLE.

HAD IT TOWED TO A QUALIFIED MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER FAILED AND THE ENGINE JUMPED TIME, CAUSING CATASTROPHIC DAMAGE TO THE CYLINDER HEAD AND PISTONS. MECHANIC ESTIMATED A REPAIR COST OF APPROXIMATELY $6000.00 TO REPLACE THE ENGINE WITH A USED ONE. THE CAR HAD LESS THAN 100K MILES BUT THE REPAIR WOULD HAVE COST MORE THAN IT WAS WORTH. VOLKSWAGEN WILL NOT PAY FOR THE REPAIR, EVEN THROUGH A CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT WAS SETTLED AGAINST THEM FOR THIS ISSUE, SINCE THE DEADLINE FOR APPLYING WAS 6 MONTHS PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-01-25
  • VIN: WVGAV75N19W
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I NOTICED A HUGE OIL PUDDLE WHERE MY CAR WAS PARKED. I DROVE STRAIGHT TO THE VW SERVICE DEPT IN MY AREA...THE CAR HAS LESS THAN 75K MILES & WAS LAST SERVICED BY A VW DEALERSHIP DUE TO FUEL PUMP RECALL. UPON MY DISCOVERY OF THE MASSIVE OIL LEAK, I NOW KNOW WAS SPAWNED FROM THE PCV VALVE GOING BAD WHICH HAS RESULTED IN BLOWING OUT 3 SEALS AND REQUIRING A NEW PAN. I HAVE RECIEVED AN ESTIMATE FROM A VW DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPT AND A WELL KNOW AUTO REPAIR SHOP- BOTH HAVE QUOTED THE COST NO LESS THAN $2000 WITH POTENTIAL OF REACHING $3000. ESSENTIALLY THE PCV PART IS ABOUT $20.00 IN COST, BUT BECAUSE IT JUST "WENT BAD" AND ITS PURPOSE IS TO ALLOW THE ENGINE TO BREATHE...BLOWING OUT THESE ADDITIONAL SEALS MEANS THAT THE ENGINE WILL NEED TO BE REMOVED TO BE REPAIRED. THE CAR IS VALUED AROUND $7000 TO RESALE IN GOOD CONDITION. NOW, A CONSUMER HAS TO SPEND 30% TO 40% OF THE CARS VALUE TO REPAIR THE FAULTY VALVE THAT CAUSED ADDITIONAL ISSUES IN ORDER TO STOP THE BLEEDING. I BOUGHT THIS CAR FROM CARMAX AT 30K MILES IN NOV 2014- AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE THERE WAS NO DISCLOSURE OF A RECALL ISSUED IN AUGUST OF 2014 & DID NOT EVEN RECEIVE A LETTER REGARDING THE RECALLED UNTIL 2 YEARS LATER FROM EITHER CARMAX OR VW. IN ALL ACTUALITY THE ENTIRE SECTION IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL REGARDING THE ENGINE WAS COMPLETELY REMOVED & IS MISSING. NO INDICATOR LIGHTS CAME ON OR WERE DISPLAYED FROM THE LEAK OR SEALS. I WOULD HAVE NEVER KNOWN IF I WASN'T PARK IN A PAVER DRIVEWAY AT SOMEONE'S HOME & ASKED IF THAT LARGE OIL MARK WAS THERE PRIOR TO ME PARKING THERE IN THE PAST 24 HRS. IF I CONTINUED DRIVING MU VEHICLE, IT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A SEQUENCE CATASTROPHIC EVENTS, IN A VEHICLE THAT HAS BEEN MAINTAINED ACCORDING TO ALL SERVICE STANDARDS & REQUIREMENTS ON BEHALF OF IT'S OWNER.

Negative 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan car reviews

  1. Cleve Windler 2025-01-08

If you're considering this car, I would suggest looking in another direction. While it was great up until about 82,000 miles, I've had to replace my lights multiple times, as well as my intake manifold, pumps, and entire door latch system on the driver's side. This year alone, the car has cost me over $3000. I'm disappointed that owning this car has become such a burden and it's pushing me to start looking for a new vehicle. I've noticed that older VWs seem to hold up better, but unfortunately, my experience with this one has been less than ideal. If I had known what I know now, I would have chosen a Toyota or Honda instead.

  2. Tristian Marvin 2025-01-02

This car has been a real disappointment. Unfortunately, I have had to spend over $2000 on non-warranty computer repairs, and even after all that, the car still isn't fixed correctly. I have decided to return the car early because I am concerned about how much more it will cost me if I keep it for the remaining 8 months of my lease. I would rather return the car and pay off the remaining lease. I would advise against purchasing this car.

My 2009 Tiguan has unfortunately experienced some significant issues. The water pump failed at 36000 miles and at 40000 miles, there was an oil leak. However, I was able to address these problems effectively at a cost of approximately $2000.

Avoid the 2009 Tiguan model. Although my wife and I were initially drawn to its stylish design, sporty feel, and fuel efficiency, we experienced numerous reliability issues. The electric parking brake would often become stuck and required a technician from Germany to replace the wiring harness. We also had a fuel leak that sprayed gasoline over the engine, which was a major safety concern. In addition, we had to replace the front struts, blower motor, entire heater box assembly, and clean the exhaust valve manifold due to carbon buildup. Unfortunately, the timing chain eventually skipped, and the cost to replace the engine was too high. Despite our attachment to the car, we ultimately had to sell it to a junkyard. We were disappointed that we couldn't get more mileage out of it, but we have learned our lesson and will not be purchasing another Volkswagen.

I bought a 2009 VW Tiguan S from Crown Motors PDX in Portland, Oregon in March 2019. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the car shortly after purchasing it. Despite taking it to the dealer's mechanic, the problem persisted and eventually led to the timing chain skipping. The repair estimate is quite high, almost as much as I paid for the car. I'm not sure what to do with it now, and Crown Motors has not been very helpful. I want to warn other consumers to be careful when purchasing VW/Audi cars between 2008-2014. It's important to check the VIN on timingchainlitigation.com before making a purchase, as this issue is not listed on Carfax reports or as a recall. Car dealerships may not warn you about it either. If the car has over 100k miles, you may not receive any compensation and the engine repairs could cost more than the car itself. I hope my review can help others avoid the same grief and financial loss.

I've been the proud owner of my Tiguan since October 2008 and I must say, it has never let me down. The 2.0 Turbo engine is simply fantastic and provides the perfect acceleration when you need it. The transmission is smooth and the interior and exterior are built with top-quality materials. In my over 30 years of driving, I can confidently say that this is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I was once T-boned by a driver who ran a red light at 30-40 mph and crashed straight into my driver's door. However, thanks to the safety features and quality build of the Tiguan, I walked away without a scratch. For those who complain about pulsating brakes during hard braking, that's just the antilock brakes doing their job. And if you have a sunroof, just remember to close it when it rains to avoid any mold problems. Thank you for considering the Tiguan!

We absolutely love it! When we were considering our options, we looked at the Rav4 and CRV, but ultimately decided on the Tiguan. Our SE model has upgraded seats, a pano roof, and more. It looks great and drives great, thanks to the fun and peppy 2.0T engine. The suspension is sporty, which might not be for everyone, but we find it enjoyable. We're also getting great MPG, averaging around 28MPG combined! The seats are super comfy and the roof is absolutely gorgeous. The interior is top-notch, with typical VW quality and plenty of storage space (especially compared to VW's sedans). There's good leg room in the back and plenty of space in the front. While the cargo space is a little limited compared to other CUVs, it's more than adequate for our needs and the rear seats fold down easily. So far, we haven't had to do anything but basic maintenance.

We've been enjoying our 2009 Canadian Highline model Tiguan for over 3 years now, and it's still going strong with no issues after 48K kms. We recently took a road trip through the Rocky mountains in June and were pleasantly surprised by the awesome fuel economy! During winter driving, we switch out our 18inch rims for 16inch aluminum ones with Gislavid winter tires (from Finland) and are able to easily plow through even the heaviest snowfalls. Our road usually takes 5 days to get plowed after a major snowfall, but we're always prepared thanks to our trusty Tiguan. In fact, we've already had two big snow dumps this season - 35 centimetres and 25cm - but we're not worried at all.

I purchased this car with 20k miles and have driven it for 2 months, adding 10k miles. I am pleased to report that I have not encountered any issues, except for some squeaking/grinding of the brakes and rattling when I suddenly step on them. The car came with a navigation system installed by the previous owner, which can be frustrating at times. Unfortunately, I am unable to connect my iPod or listen to music from my phone on Pandora. Additionally, the radio shuts down and notifies me when I exceed the speed limit, which can be bothersome. Despite these minor inconveniences, I am overall satisfied with my purchase.

I've been driving a Tiguan for a little over a week now and it's been great! It's very versatile with tons of room for people and luggage. The panoramic sunroof is superb. This car was definitely worth the wait and I'm getting just over 30 mpg! You should definitely consider getting one!
