1992 Subaru Svx problems
The Subaru Alcyone SVX, marketed outside Japan as the Subaru SVX, is a two-door, front-engine, all- or front-wheel drive coupé manufactured and marketed by Subaru from 1991 to 1996 over a single generation.
Superseding the company's aviation-influenced XT range, the Alcyone SVX was Subaru's first entry into the luxury/performance market, and was noted for its aircraft-inspired 'window-within-a-window' side-glass configuration.
The nameplate "Alcyone" (pronounced "al-SIGH-uh-nee") refers to the brightest star in the Pleiades constellation, stylized in the Subaru company logo. The suffix "SVX" is an acronym for "Subaru Vehicle X".

Common 1992 Subaru Svx problems
The Subaru SVX, produced from 1992 to 1997, is known for its unique design and advanced features. However, like any other vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the Subaru SVX 1992, based on complaints from owners:
- Transmission Failure: The most common problem reported by Subaru SVX owners is transmission failure. The transmission in the SVX is known to have issues, with many owners reporting that their transmissions have either failed or are about to fail. The 4EAT automatic transmission is particularly prone to problems, with solenoids often failing and causing the center differential to burn up. This issue can be costly to repair, with some owners reporting bills of up to $1,000.
- Wheel Bearings: Another common problem with the Subaru SVX is wheel bearing failure. The rear wheel bearings on the SVX are known to fail prematurely, which can cause vibration and noise while driving. Replacing the wheel bearings can be a time-consuming and expensive process, with some owners reporting bills of up to $500.
- Warped Rotors: The SVX's heavy weight (3,600 pounds) can cause the rotors to warp, leading to vibration and noise while braking. Subaru did not equip the SVX with rotors to match its weight, which can lead to this issue.
- Electrical Problems: The SVX's complex electrical system can also cause problems. The electric sunroof, in particular, is known to lapse into a coma, which can be expensive to repair. The air conditioning system is also not the most robust, so it's essential to ensure that it's working effectively before purchasing an SVX.
- Expensive Parts: Due to the SVX's rarity, parts can be relatively expensive. This can make repairs more costly than with other vehicles.
Despite these common problems, many Subaru SVX owners report that their cars are reliable and fun to drive. With proper maintenance and care, the SVX can be a reliable daily driver. However, it's essential to be aware of these common issues and budget accordingly for potential repairs.
Is the 1992 Subaru SVX reliable?
This car is completely unique. It is fast and extremely reliable. for a 20 year old car it is very high tech.
Why did the Subaru SVX fail?
It was the only available gearbox because Subaru didn't have a manual transmission that could effectively put up with the SVX without liquifying itself (via MotorTrend). A hefty price tag and somewhat weak transmission spelled sales disaster for Subaru. All told, the brand sold around 14,000 SVXs during its short life.
What is the value of a 1992 Subaru SVX?
The value of a used 1992 Subaru SVX ranges from $3,821 to $12,796, based on vehicle condition, mileage, and options.
What is the top speed of a 1992 Subaru SVX?
- 0-60 mph: 7.3 seconds.
- 1/4 mile: 15.4 seconds at 92.5 mph (148.9 km/h)
- Top speed: 154 mph (248 km/h) (1992–93), 143 mph (230 km/h) (1994+ due to the addition of an electronic speed governor)
- 60-0 mph: 98 ft (30 m)

Why did Subaru stop making the SVX?
They simply weren't selling, so Subaru decided to scrap the name and car in favour of a better vehicle, the Subaru Ascent. In 2014, the last year the Tribeca was sold, only 732 models were sold. A lot lower of a number compared to the 18,614 sold in 2007.
Is Subaru SVX a rare car?
In its production lifetime between 1991 and 1996, the Subaru SVX is reckoned to have sold 24,379 units — that's slightly more than the 23,400 examples of Citroën C6, with which I am very familiar.

SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-06-25
- VIN: JF1CX3536NH
- Components: SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I PURCHASES A SUBARU SVX 1992 MODEL. I TEST DROVE IT AND IT SEEMED FINE. TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC TO HAVE IT LOOKED OVER AND IT CAME BACK CLEAN EXCEPT FOR SOME SUGGESTIONS TO CHANGE BRAKE PADS , FLUIDS ETC. THIS WAS ALL DONE. HOWEVER A COUPLE MONTHS LATER A MAJOR PROBLEM OCCURRED. THE GEAR WOULD SOMETIMES NOT SHIFT, THE CAR WOULD MAKE A LOUD THUD SOUND IN REVERSE AND OVER REV ON HIGHWAY DRIVING. I FOUND OUT FROM VARIOUS FORUMS THAT THIS CAR HAS A FLAW , THE TRANSMISSION IS DUE TO FAILURE. EVERY CAR OWNER IN THIS FORUM HAS EXPERIENCED PREMATURE TRANSMISSION FAILURE. THE COST TO HAVE THIS COMPLETELY FIXED COSTS OVER $4000. A PROBLEM THAT OWNERS SHOULD NOT PAY FOR BECAUSE OF FAULTY ENGINEERING. THE LATER MODELS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM BUT NOT AS PRONE TO IT. WHY DID SUBARU NEVER HAVE THESE CARS RECALLED OR PARTS RECALLED? ANOTHER PROBLEM OCCURRED, WHILE DRIVING THE CAR BACK FROM THE PURCHASE LOCATION, THERE WAS A HUMMING SOUND FROM THE TRUNK, IT GOT LOUDER AND LOUDER AND AT 500 MILES LATER IT WAS A GRINDING AND LOUD SOUND. MY MECHANIC LISTED IT AS A WHEEL BEARING PROBLEM. ON SUBARU FORUMS AS WELL AS ADVICE FROM MECHANICS THE SUBARU IS PRONE TO SEVER WHEEL BEARING PROBLEMS. IN SOME CASES GENERATING HEAT THAT THEY HAD RECOUNTED CARS WITH MOLDED BEARINGS AND BROKEN AXLES. ANOTHER PROBLEM IS THE ABS SYSTEM. I GUESS THE BRAKE PUMP IS ALSO A COMPONENT THAT LEAKS. I NEED TO HAVE MY BRAKED REFILLED EVERY OTHER DAY AND THE FUEL PUMP COSTS AROUND 2000$ I WISH FOR YOU TO SEND THIS REPORT TO SUBARU TO VOICE THIS CONCERN FOR ME AND ON BEHALF OF THE MANY SUBARU SVX DRIVERS THAT ARE FACED WITH ENDURING THESE COSTLY MISTAKES DUE TO POOR ENGINEERING. SUBARU SHOULD HAVE A PROGRAM TO FIX THESE PARTS OR ALLOW A TRADE IN FOR CURRENT BLUE BOOK REFUNDS OR SOME WAY OR LETTING INDIVIDUALS KNOW THAT THEY ARE SORRY. THE CAR IS A FINE PIECE OF ART AND THESE MINOR PROBLEMS MAKES IT A PIECE OF JUNK. *NM

- Summary: THE TRANSMISSION SLIPS IN 4TH GEAR WHEN IT'S TEMPERATURE AND THE WEATHER TEMPERATURE IS COOL. THE TRANSMISSION ALSO FAILS TO LOCK IN GEAR. THE SPEEDOMETER FLUCTUATES AND DOES NOT INDICATE THE CORRECT SPEED BEING DRIVEN. THIS OCCURS BECAUSE THE SPEEDOMETER SENSOR IS INSTALLED ON TOP ON THE TRANSMISSION, AND THE TRANSMISSION BURNT THROUGH THE SENSOR. THE FAILURE IS COMMON WITH THIS VEHICLE PER THE DEALERSHIP. *NM

- Summary: MY SVX, ALTHOUGH IT IS A 92' THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL FAILED AT ABOUT 98,000 MILES. I EXPECTED THE LIFE OF THE TRANSMISSION TO LAST A LOT LONGER. THE CAR IS IN GOOD CONDITION, BUT IT WILL COST ME OVER $6000 TO FIX AS RENO SUBARU SAYS I WILL NEED A COMPLETE NEW TRANSMISSION TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE CAR IS PROBABLEY ONLY WORTH ABOUT THAT MUCH. MY CAR IS SITTING IN MY DRIVE WAY, I DON'T WANT TO SCRAP IT BUT DON'T WANT TO SPEND THE ENTIRE WORTH OF THE CAR TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *AK

- Date Of Incident: 2003-03-12
- VIN: JF1CX3536NH
- Components: SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: UPON PURCHASE OF CAR 1-2 WEEKS PRIOR, IT WAS NOTICED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO 4TH GEAR, AND WAS SLIPPING AT INITIAL ACCELERATION FROM A STOP UNTIL AROUND 1500 RPM, CAUSING WHEELSPIN UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS. ON THIS DATE, TRANSMISSION SUDDENLY FAILED TO BE ABLE TO SHIFT INTO 3RD GEAR, LIMITING TOP SPEED TO LEVELS BELOW SAFE LIMITS ON MOST HIGHWAYS. THIS OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY, AND WAS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS. TOWED TO DEALER, DEALER RECOMMENDS REMANUFACTURED TRANSMISSION, ASKING APPROXIMATELY $4000 FOR PARTS AND LABOR. I DIDN'T (AND STILL DON'T) HAVE THE MONEY FOR THAT, SO I MANAGED TO LIMP HOME WITH IT WHERE IT HAS SAT SINCE. AT SOME POINT SINCE THEN IT HAS LOST THE ABILITY TO SHIFT INTO 2ND GEAR. DEALER ALSO FOUND POSSIBLE WHEEL BEARING AND FRONT ROTOR PROBLEMS, IN ADDITION TO FAILURE OF FRONT CATALYTIC CONVERTERS. WANTS ROUGHLY $6000 TO FULLY REPAIR VEHICLE. *NLM

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in 2012 from the first owner who took great care of it. It only had 20,000 miles on it at the time, and now it has 41,000 miles. I absolutely adore the design, power, and handling of this car. However, I did notice that the transmission can be a bit of a weak point. After doing some research on SVX forums, I decided to install a transmission filter and cooler, and use synthetic fluid. Since then, I haven't had any issues with it at all. I just wanted to give you a heads up in case you're considering buying a 1992-93 model. Make sure to check for the filter and have a trusted mechanic inspect the transmission. Overall, I really love this car!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my SVX. I've had it for 3 years now and it's been quite the journey. When I first got it, I had to replace the transmission because the previous owner had towed it by the front tires, not realizing it was all-wheel drive. It was definitely an unexpected expense, but I managed to find a good deal and only paid $3200 for the car overall. Since then, I've had to replace a lot of other parts as well, including the ignition, fuel system, harmonic balancer, head gaskets, door locks, antenna motor, spark plugs and wires, and rack and pinion. It hasn't been cheap, but I really do love this car and it's been worth it to me. I even managed to find a replacement glass piece for one of the doors at a junk yard for only $75, although it did cost $80 to install. I'm currently on the lookout for a chip and supercharger to really take my SVX to the next level. I can't wait to see what the future holds for my Superu!

I've had this car for almost 5 years now. When I bought it, it had 80k miles on it. Unfortunately, I had to get the transmission fixed twice, but thankfully it was under warranty. I also had some issues with the front rotors warping, but I was able to improve the situation by getting some aftermarket 'low heat' pads and turning the rotors. I did have a couple of instances where the power steering hoses popped off, but overall I still enjoy driving this car.

I received the car in March of 2009 from my sister-in-law who had purchased it new in Tucson. The car had 86K miles on it and the transmission had been rebuilt around 75K. Despite its age, the car was in exceptional condition, having led a very sheltered life. Within a week of receiving it, a Ferrari driver complimented it at a stoplight. In July, I took the car on a 3700 mile loop through Texas and New Mexico, where it never missed a beat and averaged 28 mpg for the trip. It's an absolute blast to drive through mountain twisties. The car has never let me down, but finding a quality mechanic is of utmost importance. Fortunately, I found one here in Scottsdale who loves the car and is honest as the day is long.

Your auto-bot is excellent and your car is wonderful enough that you kept it for 10 years. Prior to this car, you had a new car once a year it seems, including 9 Mercedes, Infiniti, etc. Although your car needs some work and has a small dent in the left front fender, it is still one of the most powerful and responsive cars you have ever driven.
