2013 Volkswagen Tiguan problems
The Volkswagen Tiguan (German pronunciation: ) is a series of cars produced by German manufacturer Volkswagen since 2007, sitting between the smaller T-Roc and the larger Touareg in the company's crossover SUV range. The first generation was based on the PQ46 platform, while the second generation, released in 2016, utilizes the Volkswagen Group MQB A2 platform. It is generally considered to be a medium-sized SUV in Europe, while in North America it is considered to be a compact crossover.
The name Tiguan is a portmanteau of the German words Tiger ("tiger") and Leguan ("iguana") and won a naming contest by German car magazine publisher Auto Bild—from a field of names that also included Namib, Rockton, Samun and Nanuk.
As of the spring of 2020, six million units had been sold worldwide, with 910,926 units being manufactured in 2019 alone, making the Tiguan the best-selling car overall in the Volkswagen Group. It was also the best-selling SUV in Europe.
Its larger counterparts include the Tiguan Allspace, a long-wheelbase family-oriented version of the Tiguan with three-row seating, and the Tiguan X, a coupé SUV.

Common 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan problems
The Volkswagen Tiguan 2013 has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine and powertrain. One of the most prevalent issues is the malfunctioning throttle body, which can lead to rough idling, RPM fluctuations, and the check engine light. This can cause the car to perform poorly, especially during low-speed cruising.
Another common problem is the failure or malfunction of the turbocharger. Many Volkswagen Tiguan owners have reported a severe lack of power or difficulty maintaining motorway speeds. If the engine sounds like it is overworking, it could be a sign of a malfunctioning turbocharger. The turbocharger issues are so widespread that Volkswagen owners have even petitioned for the company to initiate a recall.
Carbon buildup is another known engine design fault in the Volkswagen Tiguan, particularly in the TSI direct engine injection engine. This can result in black smoke from the exhaust, failing sensors, and poor performance. Power loss, rough idling, hard starts, decreased acceleration, and misfires are some of the symptoms associated with carbon buildup. To address this issue, the intake manifold, intake ports on the cylinder head, and intake valves should be cleaned thoroughly.
The timing chain tensioner, made of plastic, tends to fail in many Volkswagen Tiguans. If you hear rattling or misfiring while idling, your timing system may be failing. A check engine light accompanied by contaminated engine oil could also indicate a timing chain issue.
Electrical issues are another common problem with the VW Tiguan, particularly in the infotainment system. Many owners have reported problems with the exterior lights, infotainment screen, and rearview camera. Issues with the exterior lights include low and high beams failing, problems with the sunroof ambient lighting bar, and issues with the taillights. Some of these problems have been common enough to prompt VW to issue recalls to fix them. Infotainment screen issues, such as freezing or going blank, can often be resolved by resetting or updating the system to the newest version. However, VW did recall the Tiguan back in 2018 because the cluster can fail and not remind you that your key is still in the ignition.
Burning oil is another problem Tiguan owners have experienced. A common problem with Tiguan models, mainly from 2018, is that the engine continually needs oil adding, leaving owners confused and worried as they burn through oil at an alarming rate. Although VW dealers have reportedly been telling customers they consider it acceptable for their cars to burn through a quart, this simply isn't good enough. This problem has been linked to bad cylinder seals.
Rearview camera issues are reasonably regular with many modern-day VW models, and the Tiguan is no exception. Volkswagen even issued two recalls to combat this issue.
Airbag-related issues are also reasonably frequent on many modern-day Volkswagen vehicles. The most common airbag-related issues are those associated with the airbag control module, frontal airbag deployment, side/window airbags, and the dreaded coil spring. Automatic emergency braking problems have also been reported in some cases.
What is the common problem of Volkswagen Tiguan?
Common faults included non-engine electrical and infotainment faults (of which both petrol and diesel models suffered). The diesels suffered more from engine electrical issues – 5.0% of owners surveyed experienced this issue, against 1.6% of owners of petrol Tiguans.
How many miles does a 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan last?
What Are The Proper Maintenance Tips For A VW Tiguan? It is said that a Volkswagen Tiguan can last anywhere between 150,000 to 200,000 miles. However, you can get more than 200,000 miles with proper care and maintenance. Typically, you can expect to get 10 to 15 years of driving out of a Tiguan.
Are Volkswagen Tiguan expensive to repair?
The average total annual cost for repairs and maintenance on a Volkswagen Tiguan is $730, compared to an average of $521 for compact SUVs and $652 for all vehicle models.
What is the mileage of a Tiguan 2013?
With 4Motion all-wheel-drive, the car gets an EPA-rated 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. In a mixed course of driving, I ended up with an average of 22.3 mpg. Oddly, without 4Motion, the Tiguan only gains 1 mpg in the city, a minor difference which makes getting the all-wheel-drive system only a matter of initial cost.

- Summary: After filling up one day I was heading home and started to smell gas from my ac vents when I turned it on I didn’t pay much attention until I got nauseous and a huge headache. Later that day my boyfriend tried to get to work and the car said “engine off” and turned off on the side of the highway if wouldn’t start. We figured maybe a battery l got it towed home afterwards and just let it sit for a day bought a new battery it didn’t start then noticed there was no gas in it suddenly I just had a full tank the day prior. When I cranked it up the next morning after going to get more gasoline it all just started spraying from under the engine and it smelled like gas. I’m to scared to move it far and it blows up or something.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-30
- VIN: WVGBV7AX0DW
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,AIR BAGS
- Summary: My 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan has had an airbag light on the instruments display since early March of 2022. At the same time lights on the steering wheel no longer illuminate and the horn does not function. I had earlier received a recall notice and took the car to my dealer for analysis on March 14. The service technician determined that the clock spring was defective and on and ordered the part which he said may be a week or two. I have checked with my dealer's part's department every month since then, and no part has arrived. I have been told that it is a supply issue. I am especially concerned that I have had several very close calls on limited access highways when a car has nearly veered into my car from a lane either from the left or the right, and I have no horn to alert the other driver who for some reason has failed to see me. I also am concerned that having a collision and having to airbag could be a very serious accident causing severe injury or death. This vehicle in unsafe and will not pass inspection.

- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2012-2016 Eos, 2012 Passat, 2012-2016 CC, 2015-2016 e-Golf, 2011-2015 Touareg, 2012-2015 and 2017 Tiguan, and 2011-2016 Golf and 2011-2013 GTI vehicles. Modifications made while the vehicles were in an internal evaluation period may cause the affected vehicles to not comply with all of the applicable regulatory requirements.
- Consequence: If the vehicles do not meet all regulatory requirements, there could be an increased risk of a crash, fire, or injury.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles to make them fully compliant or Volkswagen will repurchase them if necessary, free of charge. The recall began November 29, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 24AV/2W.
Negative 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan car reviews
Positive 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan car reviews
-
I recently got a great deal on a lease return, which has influenced my opinion of the vehicle. However, there are a few quirks to consider: Firstly, the Tiguan doesn't seem to like the cold weather. It can appear lifeless and make funny noises until it reaches a temperature of at least 190F. Secondly, the electronic sensors can be a bit unpredictable. Sometimes, idiot lights and sensors will come on without explanation, but they usually go away after restarting the car. Lastly, it's important to keep a jump starter in the trunk as virtually everything in this car is electrical. Without a fully charged battery, your Tiguan won't fire up. I've been stranded twice in a single day with a dead battery, once after listening to just three songs on the CD player. For just $100, you can pick up a NOCO Genius Jump Starter and avoid any potential issues.
-
The VW TIGUAN is just the right size - not too big, not too small - and is roomy enough to comfortably fit all passengers in the back seat, except for the tallest ones. The engine runs very quietly and smoothly, yet acceleration is more than adequate to quickly merge onto the freeway. The turbo makes driving up steep roads and inclines a breeze.
-
Just a heads up, you might notice some turbo lag.
-
Great handling and very responsive. Very well equipped and great looking.

I purchased my 2013 VW Tiguan in November 2020 with 62,000 miles on it. It has been an amazing experience so far! Despite not having any prior experience with this car, I was pleasantly surprised by how well it drove and how new it looked. Although I took a couple of weeks to look at other cars, I kept coming back to this one. My husband even encouraged me to buy it, and I'm so glad I did! The size is perfect for both of us, and the visibility is great. The controls are easy to use and not confusing like some newer cars. I absolutely love the heated seats, and the AWD is fantastic. I've driven it in heavy snow and slippery roads twice this winter, and it hasn't slipped once. While the gas mileage isn't the best, it's not a big deal for me since I don't drive a lot. The SE has just the right amount of features, and I'm planning on adding a back-up camera soon.

I've been driving my 2013 Tiguan for two months now and while I enjoyed the new car feeling at first, I'm starting to notice some issues. The car feels underpowered and lacks the pep I was hoping for. I also agree with another reviewer who mentioned the weird shifting, which I've experienced myself, especially on hills. Unfortunately, the 4Motion control seems to struggle with distinguishing between steep hills and unsafe driving conditions, causing the car to slow down dramatically and limiting acceleration control. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this car for mountain driving.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share an update on my VW. I purchased it from Carmax on February 24, 2018 with 68,000 miles on it. As of today, October 24, 2018, it has 75,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing some issues with the car lately. It's been running funny and shaking while driving. My mechanic thinks it might be due to a timing chain tensioner failure, as there's a clicking noise coming from the engine. After doing some research, it seems like this is a known problem. I'm a bit worried since I'm 5 months into a 6 year lease, but I'm hoping we can find a solution. Thanks for listening!

It's unfortunate to hear about the issues you've experienced with your car. It sounds like there have been a number of problems, including a deposit in the engine, frequent electrical issues, and an oil leak. As a German car, it can be expensive to fix these problems. Based on your experience, you wouldn't recommend buying any vv vehicles. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
Edgar Greenholt 2024-03-06
I had some issues with this car after a couple of years of owning it, but overall it was a decent ride. Unfortunately, I experienced some problems with the turbo, gas mileage, and performance. I also had trouble with oil leaks, speaker malfunctions, and a rust crack on the passenger door. Additionally, I had to deal with a leaky tire and engine misfiring. The sunroof was also a persistent issue, with water pooling up due to a faulty drain tube. Despite these problems, I still enjoyed driving the car and appreciated its features. Many people have noted that fixing this issue is not a permanent solution and can be very time-consuming and expensive. The dealer is the only place where you can get a 100% guaranteed fix, but there may be other experts out there who can help. Unfortunately, this leak has caused extensive electrical problems, such as power seats and heated seats not working, airbag failure light being on, tire pressure failure light, backup lights going out, and traction control failure. I'm sure there is more to come. Despite taking great care of the car, such as taking it in for early oil changes, never ignoring warning lights, doing necessary mileage maintenance, and even washing it extensively on winter days when there was a lot of salt on the ground, the car has been falling apart piece by piece. It's very disappointing. Additionally, the rust issue and speaker issue happened long before my car was a victim of self-induced flooding. The car has a certain appeal when it's new and clean, but once it's lived in, it can look terrible. The seats are small, metal brackets are showing everywhere, and there is plastic everywhere. However, I'm not willing to pay someone to steal it.

I'm a Ford guy, but when my wife brought home the Tig, I was impressed. It's a quick little car with a nice interior and great gas mileage. However, after driving it for 20,000 miles, I became concerned about its crash test ratings. Unfortunately, our vehicle didn't handle the move from Texas to Michigan very well, and the EPC went out twice due to weather. The replacement cost was $900 each time. Although VW informed us that many vehicles are experiencing this issue, it's still frustrating.
