Volkswagen Tiguan problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Tiguan (German pronunciation: ) is a series of cars produced by German manufacturer Volkswagen since 2007, sitting between the smaller T-Roc and the larger Touareg in the company's crossover SUV range. The first generation was based on the PQ46 platform, while the second generation, released in 2016, utilizes the Volkswagen Group MQB A2 platform. It is generally considered to be a medium-sized SUV in Europe, while in North America it is considered to be a compact crossover.

The name Tiguan is a portmanteau of the German words Tiger ("tiger") and Leguan ("iguana") and won a naming contest by German car magazine publisher Auto Bild—from a field of names that also included Namib, Rockton, Samun and Nanuk.

As of the spring of 2020, six million units had been sold worldwide, with 910,926 units being manufactured in 2019 alone, making the Tiguan the best-selling car overall in the Volkswagen Group. It was also the best-selling SUV in Europe.

Its larger counterparts include the Tiguan Allspace, a long-wheelbase family-oriented version of the Tiguan with three-row seating, and the Tiguan X, a coupé SUV.

  • Summary: This incident occurred [XXX] at about [XXX]. My family and I were returning to Utah from an Arizona vacation. We were heading north on [XXX], in between Payson and Benjamin when the sunroof shattered. The sunroof was not open nor had it been open during the entirety of the vacation. My fiancé and I were both watching the road and did not see any debris nor rocks fly up and hit the sunroof. Our only explanation is that it exploded. The vehicle is available for inspection on request. I am thankful that no one was hurt inside the vehicle, but this could have potentially hurt my child who was in the backseat during this. If the fabric that blocks the sunroof had been pulled back, I am 100% positive that all passengers in the car would have been injured by the glass shards. I am going to call the dealership tomorrow when they are open and plan to call the non emergency phone number for the police to file an incident report, if they allow it. • Summary: My check engine light keeps turning on and off. I took it to the dealership and they gave me a list of things to fix in the future but nothing too serious. They fixed the intake manifold, which I was not aware or informed that it had a recall on it, and they cleaned the valves. They turned off the check engine light and when I picked up the car, it came back on. I informed them about it and they turned it off again. Then again it turned back on as soon as I left the dealership. They told me I had to change the oil and so I did but it turned on again. I tested it at auto zone and the reader said to change the camshaft position sensor and I did. The check engine light turned off and on again quickly. Then recently the steering wheel light turned on and locked the steering wheel.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-14
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-14
  • VIN: 3VV4B7AX7NM
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: The powertrain control units (engine and/or transmission) exhibit concerning behaviors when accelerating from a stop. The actual vehicle acceleration and propulsive torque does not match driver demanded torque for an extended period of time. The amount of delayed reaction is longer when the vehicle is ‘cold’ meaning that the vehicle has not been running prior to driving for an extended period of time. There is some amount of initial acceleration that allows the vehicle to move into the road but then the propulsive torque seems to go away completely for 3-4 seconds. The torque delivered after this delay is then exponential which is again not matching what the driver is asking for. The unintended torque can put the driver at risk of being in a lane without the ability to accelerate out of danger in time. For the situation of having too high of torque can put the driver in danger of hitting an object because the driver was not planning to accelerate so aggressively. These two behaviors can compound on each other as well. When the driver experiences the too low of drive torque condition, the driver could apply more throttle to correct but this will only make the too high of drive torque condition worse. These behaviors occur after every drive-off from standstill. There is a TSB to help improve this behavior. There are no active faults or warning lamps. Many other owners and dealerships confirmed this same behavior. The occurrence date was set to the date of this complaint but these behaviors have been occurring since date of purchase of vehicle.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-04
  • VIN: 3VV3B7AX1LM
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: In my VW Tiguan, the sunglasses component that has the lights, the sunroof buttons, and hands-free microphone, dropped from the roof at the end of the day. It was one of the more warmer days that this happened on and I took it into the VW dealership to have them look at it the next day. The whole component blocked my ability to see and caused blind spots. The dealership gave me the car back with the light component taken out and everything else taped up. This caused a problem to not be able to see out of my rearview mirror. The dealership told me two weeks ago on 9/20 that until the part comes in, which is backordered and I still have an unknown timeframe of it coming in, I will be riding around with it taped up. I have found it difficult to drive even with it taped up because it will come down when the tape gives up. I am unsure of what the cause of it is, but know that this has been our hottest summer in the South since I've had my car.

  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: Vehicle purchased 10.31.2023 at Volkswagen Jackson (Ritchey Automotive) in Jackson, Mississippi. During the course of normal vehicle operation, multiple Travel Assist system failures and alerts as documented within Volkswagen Technical Service Bulletin 2070207/1 occur. Three repair attempts have previously been performed by Volkswagen Jackson (Ritchey Automotive) in Jackson, Mississippi as documented by invoices dated 20 FEB 2024, 27 FEB 2024, and 12 MAR 2024. These efforts appear to conform with the previously cited Technical Service Bulletin 2070207/1 and confirm the defect(s) and/or nonconformity as per the Bulletin's summary of "48‐23‐ 01-Travel Assist Currently Not Available." The frequency and persistence of visual and auditory safety alerts pose significant hazards to the safety of the driver and vehicle occupants as an unnecessary distraction and nuisance in addition to the direct hazards of antecedent electrical malfunction and driver assistance system defects/nonconformity/failure. This matter has been discussed with dealership staff, yielding no productive resolution, and further assistance is being pursued through Volkswagen Customer CARE. All rights to resolution through alternative means are documented as expressly reserved.

  • VIN: 3VV4B7AX6NM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: These vehicles have a really bad throttle response when trying to accelerate from a stop making a turn into traffic. If you try to push the accelerator pedal to accelerate quickly there is a huge delay in the response which will almost cause you to get into an accident. Please investigate and have Volkswagen correct the issue. This is a common issue with 2020 and newer VW tiguan, and Taos and Volkswagen has done nothing to improve it.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-25
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-25
  • VIN: 3VV2B7AX6MM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: 2021 Volkswagen Tijuan has an oil leak caused by a defective Timing Cover Gasket, and or PCV component(s). If you do a simple Google search, there are thousands of these vehicles experiencing the exact same issue, and numerous individuals are not happy. The warranty is 4 years or 50k miles, this problem occurred at 53K, very convenient for the dealers repairing these vehicles. This is absolutely a design flaw and should qualify for a recall. Please investigate and I am sure you will agree, thank you so much.
Volkswagen Tiguan 2021
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-22
  • VIN: 3VV2B7AX9MM
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I was driving to work a couple days ago and noticed that the control system that is connected to my rear view mirror was broken. It appears that the plastic overhead control system broke where it screws in. When I inspected it the clasps on all four sides broke with the screws still intact to the vehicle. I disconnected the ports so that I can see my mirror. I just bought my vehicle in July 2023 and I rarely use the controls. I don’t think it’s fair that I have to pay for this replacement. In my honest opinion this should never happen. I haven’t replaced it yet because I am unable to afford it at this time. However I don’t think it should be my responsibility since I’ve never had this happen on any vehicle I have owned. It appears to be a default in craftsmanship.

Latest negative Volkswagen Tiguan car reviews

  1. Fredy Greenholt 2025-07-10

    Vehicle year: 2021

The car's transmission has been consistently problematic, with a significant delay in response time when stepping on the pedal. The car's acceleration is inconsistent and unpredictable, making it difficult to drive. Additionally, the sensors can be frustrating, as the car may stop unexpectedly when pulling out of driveways. The engine is also quite noisy and revs at a high level. Overall, the car's performance does not justify its cost, despite its attractive appearance.

  2. Trystan Hills 2025-07-09

    Vehicle year: 2022

The vehicle looks great, but I experienced some issues with the acceleration after driving it for 14 miles. I found it to be jerky and sometimes slow to engage. On one occasion, I didn't depress the gas pedal slightly to pull out into traffic and the pedal kept going down with no response. However, after a few seconds, the turbo kicked in and the car took off suddenly. This was a bit scary and dangerous. I brought the car back and was told by the sales team that it is a common issue and would work itself out. However, when I brought it in for service 7 days later, the Service Advisor informed me that it is normal for the Tiguan and cannot be fixed. Considering the turbo lag, I would suggest considering other options to avoid financial loss and potential irritability.

  3. Loy Satterfield 2025-07-04

    Vehicle year: 2017

I own a 2017 Tiguan and have noticed that the dash a/c vents cannot be adjusted to blow air below the face, which is a design flaw. Additionally, the gas mileage is not up to par.

  4. Malachi Streich 2025-07-03

    Vehicle year: 2010

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Volkswagen Tiguan. Unfortunately, I've had some trouble with the motor. It went out at 71,000 miles and was rebuilt, but now at 64,000 miles, I'm experiencing the same issue again. I still owe $8,000 on the car and I'm currently without a vehicle. It cost me $5,000 to replace the motor, which is quite expensive for a 2010 car that I financed for $13,000. If anyone has any advice or can offer any help, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much!

This car has some great features such as a nice exterior, comfortable interior, and a fantastic sunroof. However, it does have some drawbacks such as poor fuel efficiency, a loud engine, and a serious hesitation issue that could potentially be dangerous. When coming to a stop sign and accelerating to turn left, the car stumbles and pressing the gas pedal doesn't seem to help. Unfortunately, even after taking it to the dealer, the issue remains unresolved. The service technician who owns the same car is also experiencing the same problem.

I have about 1200 miles on the Tiguan so far. Before buying, I also looked at the CRV and RAV4. The RAV was too 'loose' in driving, and while the Honda was nice, the Tiguan is a lot more fun and tighter to drive (thanks to great German engineering). The dealership in Belleve WA was amazingly easy to deal with.

This car is currently available for purchase at our local dealership. It's a reliable and quiet vehicle that comes fully loaded with luxurious features such as a panoramic sunroof, memory seats, heated seats, and a top-of-the-line sound system with Sirius radio. The car also boasts a number of safety features, including multiple airbags located throughout the entire car. Driving this car is a dream - it hugs the road with grace and precision, and can even handle speeds of up to 148 mph (out of 160 mph) on a controlled race track. The steering is just right, not too loose, and the car is an absolute joy to drive. The only downside is that it comes in silver, but that's just a personal preference. Overall, this car is a fantastic choice for anyone looking for a reliable and luxurious vehicle.

After test driving several models repeatedly for two months, I decided to give the under-rated VW Tiguan a try and I'm so glad I did! While the other models were not bad cars, I wasn't thrilled with their lack-luster CV transmissions and the new CX-5 didn't feel like an upgrade from my 2016 model. However, the VW Tiguan exceeded my expectations. It's comfortable, quiet, and accelerates very well here in Colorado thanks to its thrifty 2L turbo power-train. The different power settings allow me to make the most of its capabilities, with Eco mode providing maximum efficiency and Sport mode kicking things up a notch with more immediate shifts and acceleration. We purchased this car in March 2020, just a week before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the state of Utah. Our Tiguan has a beautiful teal paint with light gray seats and black carpet. This is actually our second Tiguan, the first being a 2018 SE 4Motion. We were going to give it back as it was a lease and we didn't want to keep it out of warranty. However, the 2020 model is even better! What's the difference between the two? Well, for starters, VW has sorted out the transmission much better. In the 2018 model, there was a lag in first gear that required me to mash the throttle to the floor. The 2020 model has no lag and will snap your neck if you floor it off the line. As a result, we are seeing much improved city mpg as we can drive it normally. Our 2018 model got about 24 mpg in town, which is still great considering the EPA rates it at 21. Our 2020 model is around 27 mpg, which is what the EPA rates for highway mpg. We haven't taken it out of Cache Valley yet, but we have taken it through Logan Canyon and up around the Idaho border. The last trip through Logan Canyon, we were getting close to 33 mpg overall despite climbing heading east and then descending west back home. Due to the pandemic, we just keep this car around town to get out of the house. It's very roomy and has plenty of legroom in the rear seats. We don't have the 3rd row, so that allows for the rear seat to recline and move fore and aft. There is a lot of cargo room behind the seats and the rear seats fold flat, 60/40. The handling is good for a CUV and the engine has a wonderful snarl under throttle. VW has a variable torque management system that changes the amount of torque the engine delivers depending upon how much weight is in the vehicle and/or how far down you press the throttle. Mash it and all 225 torques come on early, allowing for somewhat rapid getaways.Drive normally, and the engine will save itself and deliver enough power to easily merge into traffic. The vehicle is impressively quiet at high speeds and climbs hills with ease. The 8-speed automatic transmission is well-matched and shifts smoothly. I particularly enjoy the 17-inch wheels as they provide good sidewall on the tires, which absorb bumps while still allowing for some fun when driving on winding roads. The ride is firm but comfortable, filtering out small bumps and handling larger ones well. It doesn't float like a Lincoln, but it's not as rough as a buckboard horsecart either. It's really nice. The AWD system is excellent in the snow. In Logan, where we get our fair share of snow, our Tiguan just goes where it's pointed. We highly recommend snow tires to make it even more sure-footed and take away all stress. On a scale of 1 to BUY IT, I say BUY IT. It does everything well and still manages to be fun to drive while being economical. Update May 21, 2021: I have had this car for 14 months now, and it has almost 12,000 miles on it. Over that span, I have averaged 28 mpg combined. The EPA says it will get 21/27 mpg, but I have found that to be vastly underrated. On the fast freeways in Utah (75-80 mph speed limits), I get 33 mpg pretty easily. Around town, the lowest either my wife or I have ever gotten is 24 mpg. Since we live in an area without a freeway, most of our driving is around town, and we have averaged 28 mpg. This is a very fuel-efficient vehicle, even with snow tires on. I will say this, the standard Giti tires it comes with are not very good. I have had to repair leaks at the valve stem twice on different tires. They're loud, slippery when it rains, and almost completely useless. I wish Volkswagen would go back to the Continental tires, which are so much better. My wife and I just use the snow tires as our everyday rubber now, and they're even quieter than the Giti tires. Ugh.One issue we have encountered is the firmness of the seats, which can border on being hard. During long drives of over 200 miles, we find ourselves turning on the seat heaters just to keep the blood flowing in our posterior. After sitting for so long, our cheeks start to tingle. However, the car is still roomy, economical, and as reliable as the sun. In the 14+ months of ownership, we have only had to do an oil change and a tire rotation, and everything works as it was designed. Additionally, the VW infotainment system is incredibly easy to use and should be the gold standard for designing one. It's worth noting that we have added memory foam aftermarket seat cushions, which have helped immensely. We will be driving our Jeep Liberty V6 on our vacation for 4th of July this year, even though the Tig does far better on gas. The car has just barely over 17,000 miles on it and is still great. It gets 25 mpg city pretty easily, and we have found it to be incredibly efficient. Maintenance is free up to 36k miles or 3 years, and we have never found the maintenance costs to be so expensive that we couldn't afford the cars. We have owned a VW since 2005, and have run new ones all the way up past 130,000 miles. Even with full synthetic oil, oil changes have never cost us more than $60. Overall, we highly recommend this car! There were no leaks, no engine problems at all, just routine maintenance. This Tiguan is very reliable, just like my other VW's. I have had no reliability issues at all.
