2000 Volvo S70 problems
The Volvo S70 is a compact executive car produced by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2000. The S70 was essentially a facelifted 850 saloon. The S70 was replaced with the Volvo S60.
Overview
Introduced in Europe in late 1996 for the 1997 model year and later in the U.S. for the 1998 model year, the Volvo S70 was an updated version of the Volvo 850 saloon. The S70's body style was overall more rounded compared to its predecessor. Changes included a redesigned front end with new lights, fully colour-coded bumpers and side trim, and clear indicator lenses for the rear lights, as well as a redesigned interior. According to Volvo, a total of 1800 changes were made.
Standard equipment was improved with remote central locking, heated & electrically adjustable mirrors, 4 airbags, power brakes with ABS and power windows being standard on every car. Trim levels varied for each market as did the equipment levels of the most basic trims. In the United States, the badging denoted the engine variant and to some extent the equipment level, whereas in Europe engine and options could be chosen individually. On all markets more powerful versions usually received better or upgraded standard equipment. The T5 and R were the series high-performance models.
For the 1999 model year, a minor facelift was introduced. Apart from very minor cosmetic changes, such as a slightly different Volvo badge on the front grille and US models now being equipped with side markers on the front fenders, most changes were done to the mechanicals. Volvo introduced its second generation side airbag which increased in volume to offer better protection. WHIPS, Volvo's system to minimize whiplash injuries, was also introduced as part of the standard equipment. New engine management systems with drive-by-wire replaced the mechanical throttle on all turbo engines as well as bringing with them an upgraded traction control. Now including throttle as well as brake intervention it was renamed STC. The ABS was upgraded from a three-channel to a four-channel system, all-wheel drive models received thicker rear discs and redesigned rear calipers. All automatic transmissions were now equipped with adaptive shift-logic, replacing the previous 3-mode selection. A starter interlock was added to models with manual transmissions.
For the 2000 model year, a new 5-speed automatic transmission with adaptive shift-logic was introduced. It was only available on non turbo front-wheel drive models. The 10V engine variants were dropped and replaced by detuned 20V versions, drive-by-wire throttle was now also introduced for non turbo models.

Common 2000 Volvo S70 problems
The Volvo S70 2000 is a reliable car, but like any other vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues by owners:
- Anti Sway Bar End Link Failure: The anti sway bar end links in the Volvo S70 2000, which connect the anti sway bar to the chassis, have a short lifespan and can wear out in as little as 10,000 miles. If left unattended, they can break, causing poor handling response and random clunks and knocks. Heavy-duty versions of the endlink are available and are a popular upgrade.
- Front Strut Mount Failure: The rubber encased upper spring seat/strut mount in the Volvo S70 2000 suffers from premature failure, causing creaking or groaning sounds during low-speed turning. If left unattended, the strut shaft can break through the mount, damaging the hood. A heavy-duty version of the strut mount is available and is considered a must-do upgrade when the front struts are apart.
- Fuel Door Hinge Failure: The plastic gas cap door hinge in the Volvo S70 2000 commonly fails at around 60,000 miles, leaving the gas door hanging from the side of the car, which doesn't look cool and can damage the paint job. An upgrade version using a stronger plastic material is available and is easily installed.
- Automatic Transmission Shift Interlock Failure: This electronic override prevents the driver from shifting the car from "PARK" into "DRIVE" unless the brakes are applied. When it fails, the car can no longer be driven unless the driver knows about the emergency override button. The shift interlock micro-switch is fairly easy to replace.
- ABS Light Due to ABS Control Module Failure: This issue has been reported by 77 people, causing the ABS light to come on.
- Marelli Throttle Actuator Failure: This is a recurring problem in post-1999 S70s, causing intermittently rough idle, no power, and the car to be limited to 20 mph. Volvo has indicated that they would honor the cost of replacing the unit and reimburse those who have already paid for a replacement.
- Transmission Problems: The 2000 S70 has a problematic early 5-speed transmission that can suddenly lose connection with gears, causing the car to rev like it's in neutral. This issue can be addressed by rowing the shifter quickly between P and L 15-20 times and changing the fluid.
These problems, while common, do not necessarily make the Volvo S70 2000 a bad car. With regular maintenance and timely repairs, these issues can be managed, and the car can provide reliable service.

- Summary: I WAS DRIVING MY CAR ON THE HIGHWAY AND AS SOON AS I REACHED 60 MPH MY ETS LIGHT CAME ON ALONG WITH MY BRAKE LIGHT AND OIL LIGHT. MY SPEEDOMETER WENT TO ZERO AND MY CAR WAS ACTING STRANGE. I PULLED OVER AND STOPPED AND HEARD A LOUD NOISE FROM THE ENGINE. I TURNED OFF MY CAR. I CALLED AAA AND ASKED FOR A TOW. WHILE THE TOW TRUCK WAS COMING, I TRIED TURNING MY CAR ON AGAIN AND THE ETS LIGHT CAME ON FLASHING AND THE CAR WOULDN'T START. I STARTED TO GOOGLE THIS PROBLEM AND SAW MANY PEOPLE HAD THE ETS ON THEIR VOLVO RECALLED. I CALLED VOLVO AND THEY DECLINED TO HELP ME. THEY SAID I NEED TO PAY FOR A NEW ETS MODULE. THEY SAID MY CAR DOESN'T HAVE A RECALL ON IT. I FOUND THIS TO BE NOT TRUE AFTER CHECKING YOUR WEBSITE FOR RECALLS ALONG WITH ANOTHER .GOV WEBSITE. I CALLED VOLVO AGAIN AND THE SAME GUY TOLD ME NOT TO CALL THEM ANYMORE AND HE HUNG UP THE PHONE. WHEN MY CAR WAS FINALLY AT HOME, I CALLED MY MECHANIC WHO USED TO WORK AT A DIFFERENT VOLVO (30 MILES FROM WHERE I LIVE) AND HE CAME TO LOOK AT MY CAR. WE SWITCHED OUT THE BATTERY, PUT IN A NEW STARTER, NEW ALTERNATOR, SWITCHED OUT ALL MY FUSES WITH NEW FUSES, CHANGED SPARK PLUGS AND SPARK WIRES, PUT NEW COILS ON AND DID AN OIL CHANGE. THE CAR STARTED, HOWEVER THE ETS LIGHT HAS BEEN ON EVER SINCE AND WHEN I REACH HIGHWAY SPEEDS, IT DOES THE SAME THING. I HAVE NOT DRIVEN IT SINCE. THE ETS IS RECALLED FOR MY VOLVO WHEN I ENTERED THE VIN. I NEED HELP WITH GETTING VOLVO TO FIX THE RECALL OR DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. THE STATE PATROL DID COME BEHIND ME TO ASK IF EVERYTHING WAS OKAY AS I WAS WAITING FOR THE TOW TRUCK. I DON'T HAVE ANY POLICE REPORTS BUT I DO HAVE THE OFFICERS CARD IF NEEDED.

WHICH HAS ALMOST CAUSED NUMEROUS ACCIDENTS. OTHER TIMES, WHEN PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL, THE CAR HESITATES AND ALMOST STALLS BEFORE ACCELERATING, CAUSING DANGEROUS CONDITIONS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. BRAKES INSPECTED AND ARE PERFECT AS IS FUEL PUMP, FUEL INJECTORS, ENGINE, ETC.; MECHANIC SUGGESTED THAT THIS IS RELATED TO A RECALL VOLVO ISSUED IN 2006 REGARDING THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-01-16
- VIN: YV1LS53D1Y2
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I HAVE A 2000 VOLVO S70 WITH ETS LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. THE CAR STALLS AND SURGES/LUNGES AT ALL RATES OF SPEED AND IS VERY UNSAFE. AFTER DOING RESEARCH I FOUND OUT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS PART. I CALLED MY LOCAL DEALER AND RAN THE VIN#. THEY STATED THE RECALL WAS DONE IN 2009. I CALLED VOLVO CORP. CUSTOMER CARE LINE AND THEY STATED THAT MY CAR WAS TOO OLD AND NO LONGER COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY/RECALL. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING FOR A FAULTY PART BY THE OEM MANUFACTURE WHEN THEY REPLACED THE FAULTY PART WITH FAULTY PARTS. IN MY RESEARCH I FOUND OUT IF MY ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACE IT WOULD HAVE A YELLOW LABEL ON IT. MINE DOES NOT. IT HAS THE ORIGINAL WHITE LABEL ON IT. I BELIEVE THAT IT MAY HAVE HAD THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE AND CLEANED BUT I DO NOT BELIEVE THE ACTUAL UNIT WAS REPLACED. I TOOK MY CAR INTO THE LOCAL VOLVO STORE IN WINTER PARK FL WHERE I WAS CHARGED A TOTAL OF $127 AND SOME CHANGE TO TELL ME THAT I NEEDED A NEW ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY AND WOULD REQUIRE A NEW SOFTWARE UPGRADE. TOTAL COST TO REPAIR $880.00 AND QUOTE DOES NOT SAY THAT THE SOFTWARE UPDATE IS INCLUDED. I AM NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE CAR. I BOUGHT IT WITH 75,000 MILES AND CURRENTLY HAVE 92,000 MILES. VOLVOS EFFORTS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM IS NOT WORKING AND IF IT DOES WORK IT DOES NOT FIX THE CAR FOR VERY LONG. WHY IS IT THAT THE WARRANTY FOR THE RECALL PART IS BASED ON THE TOTAL VEHICLE MILEAGE AND AGE INSTEAD OF THE AGE AND MILEAGE OF THE REPLACEMENT PART OR FROM THE TIME THE RECALL WAS ISSUED? I DO NOT HAVE ANY FAITH THAT SPENDING THE MONEY TO FIX THE CAR WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM ONLY DELAY IT FROM RECURRING WITH IN MONTHS OR FEW THOUSAND MILES. THIS IS STILL AN ON GOING PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL CAR AND VOLVO DOES NOT SEEM TO CARE THAT THEY ARE PUTTING LIVES IN DANGER. *TR
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-07-02
- VIN: YV1LS61J8Y2
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: I WAS UNABLE TO START THE VOLVO S70 2000 ENGINE AT ALL ON 7/2/12 AND AFTER CHECKED BY TECHNICIAN THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS NOT WORKING AND REPLACEMENT WAS NEEDED. THIS PROBLEMS HAD OCCURRED MANY TIMES IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS, YET I WAS ABLE TO START THE ENGINE AFTER SEVERAL TRIES. THIS TIME, THE ENGINE WAS NOT STARTED AT ALL EVEN WITH MANY TRIES THAT THE FUEL PUMP REPLACEMENT IS DEFINITELY NEEDED AND IT COSTS ME $732 TO FIX IT ON 7/3/12. BASED ON THE VOLVO RECALLS HISTORY, VOLVO S70 FROM 2001 FORWARDS MODELS WERE RECALLED. BUT I WONDER WHY WAS NOT FOR MY S70 2000 WHICH HAD THE SIMILAR PROBLEM. PLEASE INSTRUCT AND ASSIST ON HOW TO RECEIVED REIMBURSEMENT FROM VOLVO THE COST OF THE FUEL REPLACEMENT SINCE THIS WAS THE SIMILAR PROBLEM IN THE RECALLS FOR VOLVO S70 FROM 2001 FORWARDS MODELS. *JS

DIAGNOSED AS FAILING THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR. VOLVO REFUSED TO REPAIR UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY OR RECALL SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS 12 MONTHS PAST THE EXPIRATION OF THE 10 YEAR, 200,000 MILE EXTENDED WARRANTY ON POWER TRAIN. I'm glad to hear that you've mostly enjoyed your Volvo S70 sedan! It's great to know that it's pretty good on gas, especially on the highway. It sounds like you experience excellent driving performance on the highway, and for the most part, in the city too. Although, I understand that there are times when the driving performance can be a bit jerky.

The S70 GLT SE is an excellent car. It has great power, near-luxury comforts, a stable ride on the road, and good safety features. The sound system is unbelievable with an 8-speaker design. It's clear that Volvo is taking inspiration from Japanese quality and appearance. However, some of us still appreciate boxy, heavy, classic car designs. It's worth noting that Ford's influence on design is becoming more prominent.

This car is like a comfortable pair of old jeans on a lazy Saturday morning! I've had no problems after 36k miles, just regular oil changes and routine visits to the dealership for filter and fluid level checks. It doesn't squeak or rattle at all. With winter tires, this car has the best traction in the snow compared to several 4x4's I've owned. My wife and I both love our XC, it was our first Volvo and she even converted from a minivan to get one!

Only minor problems, and they were fixed under warranty: faulty alarm immobilizer and rattling headrest. Other than that, the car has held up very well. It has more than adequate power, although I wish the T5 would have been available when I bought the car in 4/00. I am excited to consider an S60R, set to debut sometime in 2002.

Great auto! It sounds like it has been well taken care of with reliable performance and great gas mileage (25/30). Plus, the exterior is in great condition from being kept in a garage. It's also great that you have all the repair and inspection records available. I'm excited to hear that you're ready to buy a 2007 Volvo!

I had previously owned a 1992, 940 and it was an absolute joy to drive. However, my current S70 has been giving me a lot of trouble lately. I have experienced several issues such as electrical problems, leaking seals, and faulty valves. Although my private mechanic has informed me that I am not alone in this, I am still looking for a way to resolve these issues. During my last visit to the Volvo dealership, I expressed my concerns about the number of problems I was having and the service representative sympathized with me, stating that some S80 owners have it even worse.
