2014 Volkswagen Tiguan problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Tiguan (German pronunciation: ) is a series of cars produced by German manufacturer Volkswagen since 2007, sitting between the smaller T-Roc and the larger Touareg in the company's crossover SUV range. The first generation was based on the PQ46 platform, while the second generation, released in 2016, utilizes the Volkswagen Group MQB A2 platform. It is generally considered to be a medium-sized SUV in Europe, while in North America it is considered to be a compact crossover.

The name Tiguan is a portmanteau of the German words Tiger ("tiger") and Leguan ("iguana") and won a naming contest by German car magazine publisher Auto Bild—from a field of names that also included Namib, Rockton, Samun and Nanuk.

As of the spring of 2020, six million units had been sold worldwide, with 910,926 units being manufactured in 2019 alone, making the Tiguan the best-selling car overall in the Volkswagen Group. It was also the best-selling SUV in Europe.

Its larger counterparts include the Tiguan Allspace, a long-wheelbase family-oriented version of the Tiguan with three-row seating, and the Tiguan X, a coupé SUV.

Common 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan, several common problems have been identified:

  • Throttle Body Issues: Throttle body issues are prevalent in both early and newer Volkswagen Tiguans. Symptoms include rough idling, RPM fluctuations, and the check engine light. A malfunctioning throttle body can significantly impact the car's performance, especially during low-speed cruising.
  • Turbocharger Issues: Many Tiguan owners have experienced turbocharger malfunctions or failures, resulting in a severe lack of power or struggles to maintain motorway speeds. Overworking engine sounds can indicate a problem with the turbocharger, a common issue that has led to petitions for recalls.
  • Carbon Deposits: The Tiguan is prone to carbon buildup due to an engine design fault, leading to issues like black smoke from the exhaust, failing sensors, and decreased performance. Cleaning the intake manifold, intake ports, and intake valves is crucial to address carbon buildup-related problems.
  • Timing Chain Issues: A frustrating and expensive problem in the Tiguan is related to the timing chain tensioner, often made of plastic, which tends to fail. Symptoms include rattling or misfiring while idling, accompanied by a check engine light and contaminated engine oil.
  • Hesitation When Accelerating: Owners have reported severe and erratic hesitation when accelerating, posing a safety risk. This issue, not showing diagnostic trouble codes, can be caused by a lean fuel/air mixture due to various factors like a failed mass airflow sensor or dirty fuel injectors.
  • Electrical Issues: Various electrical system problems have been reported, including issues with exterior lights, infotainment screens, and rearview cameras. Recalls have been issued to address some of these electrical concerns.
  • Burning Oil: Some Tiguan models, particularly from 2018, have been experiencing issues with burning oil excessively, often linked to bad cylinder seals. This problem can lead to confusion and worry among owners as they need to frequently add oil to their vehicles.
  • Rearview Camera Issues: Rearview camera problems are relatively common in modern VW models, including the Tiguan, prompting recalls to address these issues.
  • Airbag-Related Problems: Airbag issues, especially with the airbag control module, frontal airbag deployment, side/window airbags, and coil springs, have been reported frequently in modern Volkswagen vehicles, including the Tiguan.

These problems highlight the importance of thorough maintenance and potential areas of concern for owners of the 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-15
  • VIN: WVGBV3AX3EW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Clock Spring in steering wheel is broken. Driver Airbag is non-functional, as are the controls on the steering wheel. No Driver air bag is a huge safety issue! We immediately "scheduled" an appointment to have this issue repaired. At the appointment, a VW dealer (VW Castle Downers Grove IL) confirmed the issue and noted that this was the subject of a recall (15V483000) with an ongoing & perpetual duty to repair. Despite the recall, the dealer does not have the parts, nor can they provide a date when they might be available (they are "backordered"). We checked with another dealer, and this seems to be a common problem. Also, we did a thorough search online to assess the situation with other drivers/vehicles - this is a common issue! Someone (either the dealer or VW) is dragging their feet on this mandatory, potentially life-threatening issue & repair. When will the NHTSA kick VW (or the dealer) in the [XXX]? However there has been court cases for the same issue upto the 2014 model year Tiguans and extended warranty of 100000 miles or 10 years was given. I need VW to help with either the repair or give me exended warranty. VW customer care is not very helpful.

The moon roof is fully functioning, but a VW dealer has told me that this is a known issue for my model and year, and he recommends trading it in because even if I spend the $6K+ it would take to replace it - there is no guarantee it won’t occur again. I have been inhaling the moldy air in my vehicle and this is 1000% a safety hazard!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-13
  • VIN: WVGAV3AX9EW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Unable to complete vehicle inspection . Horn does not work, some electronics malfunction, airbags light is on. Cannot use dashboard related functions i.e. adjust tire pressure settings, gas tank door lock malfunctions, hands free communication malfunction. This is the 2nd time in a year that the clock spring failed. The manufacturer is not being able to provide the parts due to conflict area manufacturing, perhaps its time to relocate manufacturing. It's been 3 1/2 month and still no ETA on parts. Perhaps it's a poorly designed part. Maybe back to the drawing board. I understand the malfunction can set off airbag without a collision.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-01
  • VIN: WVGBV3AXXEW
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My daughter has a 2014 VW Tiguan which had the Check Engine light come on at the end of July 2022. We took vehicle to the local VW Dealer who informed us that they found Code p0328 knock sensor 1 circuit high. Oil level said to be fine. Timing angle difference of camshafts said to be at a value of -5.76 degrees. Advised replacement of timing chain. Vehicle is 8 years old with 106,000 miles, but timing chain replacement is merely estimated at a least 10years and 125,000. The VW/Audi 2.0 engines have a known and recalled problem with timing chains and tensioners that I believe involved (2007-2013) and extended warranty to 100K miles. Here we are just outside the box and get no help and no assistance and a estimated $2200 repair bill. Have to wonder if these 2014 Tiguans also have an issue but simply weren't extended into the recall or the recall wasn't comprehensive enough? I would love to have an analysis as to when our vehicle was assembled to see if its parts were of the same specification to those recalled. Would ultimately like some assistance in the cost of the repair. Have reached out to VW Customer Care and basically got no help.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-01
  • VIN: WVGAV3AXXEW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: This is the second time my Volkswagen Tiguan's spring clock has broken. As a result I have lost access to my airbags and horn. I also can't contact my driver electrical from the steering wheel. I am being told there is no way of knowing when the dealership may be able to get the part. I will be driving in an extremely unsafe care with my one-year old son. This is terrifying.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-07
  • VIN: WVGBV3AX3EW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The clock spring in my vehicle went out. There is a backorder of upwards of 1 yr for part to replace. VW stated its a known issue. AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-09
  • VIN: WVGBV3AX6EW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: My clock spring was diagnosed to be faulty and covered under the manufacturers extended warranty. I was told that the part was on back order and could take a few weeks to get in. That was on November 9, 2021. I have now driven for over 7 months in a car that does have a functioning air bag and have spent hours on the phone with Volkswagen USA and in different dealerships trying to find a remedy. My VIN number currently says there are no open recalls but fits perfectly under NHTSA Recall #15V483000. According to the NHTSA when it comes to recalled vehicles, "Manufacturers are required to fix the problem the problem by repairing it, replacing it, offering a refund, or in rare cases repurchasing the vehicle" (https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls). The part is not available for this car so dealerships are unable to repair this issue. According to the NHTSA, this issue needs to be resolved in on e of the ways listed above and so far my safety has been neglected by not only the local dealerships but also by Volkswagen USA. I now have 2 months until my inspection expires and I will not be able to legally drive a car due to the negligence of the manufacturer.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-03
  • VIN: WVGBV3AX5EW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Clock spring failed in the steering wheel after having the part replaced 2 years ago under a VW warranty. Now that the clock spring failed a second I am told that there is no ETA to get the vehicle fixed and there are over 10k people waiting for the part needed to fix the vehicle. The wait is likely over 9 months. With a failed clock spring the airbags do not work. The horn also doesn't work. 2 key safety features are no longer working in my vehicle because of a manufactures defect that is highly known. VW taking no responsibility and will not expedite parts replacement or offer an alternate vehicle. Because of VW a vehicle that would fail a safety inspection in most states will be on the road. They are not offering a loaner vehicle and are instead allowing cars to be on the road without horns and airbags. This should be a recall and VW should have to pay for damaged vehicles that are unsafe to drive.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-15
  • VIN: WVGAV3AX1EW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Took car to shop with a noise in the steering column and the SRS light is on. Automotive shop (attachment) diagnosed vehicle needs a new clock spring for the SRS system but the part is on back order with no release date as of now. This part has been unfindable for over five months, leaving the vehicle unable to be safely driven or sold/traded-in as the VW dealerships will not pay what vehicle is worth because of VW's own part issue. This leaves the consumer in a really bad position. There is no functioning airbag and VW can't come up with the part. This is a persistent issue, including a previous NHTSA investigation, see these links: https://www.forbes.com/sites/jensen/2017/11/17/feds-investigate-volkswagens-reluctant-recall/?sh=53b9719e3b77 http://www.vwproblems.com/clock-spring-failure/ We had this fixed initially under the first recall, but the issues persists for who knows how many car owners.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-15
  • VIN: wvgbv3ax8ew
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: We were driving on a highway and all of a sudden felt/heard a loud bang causing the car to swerve. We slowed down and there was a continuous loud rattling sound. We brought the car to the dealership and they told us the coil springs were fractured. Had to pay for the replacement- $2,825.73. Then we learned that the later models were recalled, but not this one. Then I heard that there was a recall from 2019 onwards, but nothing for our model year. We asked them to talk to Volkswagen and they said it was not worth it as they would not do anything about it. Something is not right.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-16
  • VIN: WVGBV3AXXEW
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Took to dealer 11/16/2021 For Service Engine Light. Found Faulty Turbo. The exhaust Manifold and Turbo come as one part. A valve inside seizes open or closed and cause a code to set. Open code is low boost. If it is seized Closed it is a over boost Code. This effects emissions! This car low mileage and turbo failed at 11/16/2021 at 40,000 Miles. This is common issue in 2.0 TSI engine.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan.

2018-05-16
  • Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2012-2016 Eos, 2012 Passat, 2012-2016 CC, 2015-2016 e-Golf, 2011-2015 Touareg, 2012-2015 and 2017 Tiguan, and 2011-2016 Golf and 2011-2013 GTI vehicles. Modifications made while the vehicles were in an internal evaluation period may cause the affected vehicles to not comply with all of the applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Consequence: If the vehicles do not meet all regulatory requirements, there could be an increased risk of a crash, fire, or injury.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles to make them fully compliant or Volkswagen will repurchase them if necessary, free of charge. The recall began November 29, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.

(Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Volkswagen CC, and Passat, 2010-2013 Eos, 2011-2014 Golf, GTI, Jetta, and Tiguan, and 2012-2014 Jetta Sportwagen vehicles. In the affected vehicles, debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag.
  • Consequence: A loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install a protective cover over the steering wheel clock spring if the air bag light is off. If the airbag light is on and the steering wheel clock spring requires replacement, dealers will install a new steering wheel clock spring. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987.

Negative 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan car reviews

  1. Randy Kihn 2024-10-28

In 2014, the SEL Motion car was driven very carefully, with only 48,000 miles on highways and local suburbs. Although warning signs are popping over the dashboard, it has been well-maintained. However, it needs a ball bearing and WSS sensor replacement, as well as new brakes and rotors, which will cost $1100 + tax for the ball bearing and sensor, and $130 + tax for the brakes and rotors. In comparison, my Nissan Rogue has 138,000 miles and only requires a $35 oil change. I have never had any issues with sensors or ball bearings, and the rear brakes and rotors were replaced after 80,000 miles, while the front brakes were replaced after 125,000 miles. It is clear that the Nissan Rogue is a more reliable and cost-effective option.

  2. Eugene Hyatt 2024-10-16

This model is certainly fun to drive, but unfortunately, it has not proven to be reliable. Based on my experience, it appears that VW may have used cheaper parts in its construction, which can lead to significant repair bills. Specifically, the water pump and cooling system are prone to breaking.

I had some issues with this car after a couple of years of owning it, but overall it was a decent ride. Unfortunately, I experienced some problems with the turbo, gas mileage, and performance. I also had trouble with oil leaks, speaker malfunctions, and a rust crack on the passenger door. Additionally, I had to deal with a leaky tire and engine misfiring. The sunroof was also a persistent issue, with water pooling up due to a faulty drain tube. Despite these problems, I still enjoyed driving the car and appreciated its features. Many people have noted that fixing this issue is not a permanent solution and can be very time-consuming and expensive. The dealer is the only place where you can get a 100% guaranteed fix, but there may be other experts out there who can help. Unfortunately, this leak has caused extensive electrical problems, such as power seats and heated seats not working, airbag failure light being on, tire pressure failure light, backup lights going out, and traction control failure. I'm sure there is more to come. Despite taking great care of the car, such as taking it in for early oil changes, never ignoring warning lights, doing necessary mileage maintenance, and even washing it extensively on winter days when there was a lot of salt on the ground, the car has been falling apart piece by piece. It's very disappointing. Additionally, the rust issue and speaker issue happened long before my car was a victim of self-induced flooding. The car has a certain appeal when it's new and clean, but once it's lived in, it can look terrible. The seats are small, metal brackets are showing everywhere, and there is plastic everywhere. However, I'm not willing to pay someone to steal it.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share an update on my VW. I purchased it from Carmax on February 24th, 2018 with 68,000 miles on it. As of today, October 24th, 2018, it has 75,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing some issues with the car lately. It's been running funny and shaking while driving. My mechanic suspects that it may be due to a timing chain tensioner failure, which is a known problem. I'm a bit worried since I'm 5 months into a 6 year lease, but I'm hoping for the best. Take care!

The SUV is great, but it does have less cargo space compared to the competition (50% less space!). Additionally, the wheelbase can make for a choppy ride on rougher roads. It would be great if VW could make the Tiguan longer to provide more interior space and a more comfortable ride.

I recently purchased a black VW Tiguan from Glenwood Subaru to replace my old Jeep Liberty with 215,000 miles on it. After conducting extensive research, I found that this car was the best deal for the amount I was willing to spend, and I absolutely loved the model. I had the car inspected by a local shop, and it proved to be very reliable and in excellent condition. I couldn't be happier with my decision! The entire process, from test driving to signing the final paperwork, was incredibly smooth. I owe a big thanks to @subaru_jason (YouTube) for making the process not only easy but also extremely fun. We had lots of laughs throughout the couple of days we worked together! If you're in the market for a Subaru or any other car, I highly recommend Jason Arrington and GW Subaru. You won't regret it. Thanks again to Jason and GW Subaru for helping me acquire my dream car! #subaru_jason

It rides a bit rough, but handles great. If you're looking for a smoother ride, the R-Line may not be the best option for you.

The car is perfect sized for your needs and has great gas mileage. It is also very comfortable, although it may take a minute to get used to the turbo. You mentioned that you will be adding a backup camera as it didn’t come installed, which is a great idea. We're so pleased to hear that you're happy with your car! Thank you for choosing Edmunds!

Besides the road noise and speaker phone, the only complaints they hear are...
