2011 Volkswagen Tiguan problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Tiguan (German pronunciation: ) is a series of cars produced by German manufacturer Volkswagen since 2007, sitting between the smaller T-Roc and the larger Touareg in the company's crossover SUV range. The first generation was based on the PQ46 platform, while the second generation, released in 2016, utilizes the Volkswagen Group MQB A2 platform. It is generally considered to be a medium-sized SUV in Europe, while in North America it is considered to be a compact crossover.

The name Tiguan is a portmanteau of the German words Tiger ("tiger") and Leguan ("iguana") and won a naming contest by German car magazine publisher Auto Bild—from a field of names that also included Namib, Rockton, Samun and Nanuk.

As of the spring of 2020, six million units had been sold worldwide, with 910,926 units being manufactured in 2019 alone, making the Tiguan the best-selling car overall in the Volkswagen Group. It was also the best-selling SUV in Europe.

Its larger counterparts include the Tiguan Allspace, a long-wheelbase family-oriented version of the Tiguan with three-row seating, and the Tiguan X, a coupé SUV.

Common 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan problems

The Volkswagen Tiguan 2011 has several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include engine problems, throttle body issues, turbocharger problems, carbon deposits, timing chain issues, hesitation when accelerating, electrical issues, exterior lights issues, infotainment system issues, burning oil, rearview camera issues, airbag-related issues, and automatic emergency braking problems.

One of the most prevalent issues with the 2011 Tiguan is the timing chain tensioner defect and engine damage, which costs an average of $3500 to fix.

Another common issue with the 2011 Tiguan is engine failure, which impacts the 2010 Tiguan most frequently. The average cost to fix engine failure is $3900 and seems to appear most often around 96,000 miles.

The timing chain tensioner is also a problem for the 2009 model, costing about $3200 to fix and happening around 89,000 miles.

Hesitation when accelerating is another common issue with the Tiguan, which can be caused by a fuel/air mixture that is too lean, which can be caused by a failed mass airflow sensor, faulty fuel pump, failed throttle position sensor, or dirty/failing fuel injectors.

Electrical issues are also a common problem with the VW Tiguan, with many owners reporting problems with the exterior lights, infotainment screen, and rearview camera.

Burning oil is another problem Tiguan owners have experienced, with a common problem with Tiguan models, mainly from 2018, is that the engine continually needs oil adding, leaving owners confused and worried as they burn through oil at an alarming rate.

Rearview camera issues are also a reasonably regular sight with many modern-day VW models, and it seems like the Tiguan is no exception. Volkswagen even issued two recalls to combat this issue.

Airbag-related issues are also reasonably frequent on many modern-day Volkswagen vehicles, and the most common airbag-related issues are those associated with the airbag control module, frontal airbag deployment, side/window airbags, and the dreaded coil spring.

Automatic emergency braking problems are also a common issue with the Tiguan, with one of the most common problems being the automatic emergency braking system failing to engage or disengaging unexpectedly.

In summary, the Volkswagen Tiguan 2011 has several common problems that have been reported by owners, including engine problems, throttle body issues, turbocharger problems, carbon deposits, timing chain issues, hesitation when accelerating, electrical issues, exterior lights issues, infotainment system issues, burning oil, rearview camera issues, airbag-related issues, and automatic emergency braking problems. These issues can be costly to fix and can affect the performance and safety of the vehicle.

2011 Volkswagen Tiguan engine

What is the common problem of Volkswagen Tiguan?

The turbocharger is known to malfunction or fail in many Volkswagen Tiguans. Some owners have reported that their cars experience a severe lack of power or struggle to maintain motorway speeds. If you hear the engine overworking, it could be a sign of a malfunctioning turbocharger.

How many miles can a 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan last?

The Tiguan generally has a reasonably long lifespan, but it varies from model to model. On average, a Tiguan can last between 150,000 and 200,000 miles, given proper care and maintenance.

Which year Tiguan is most reliable?

The reliability for 2012-2017 Tiguans is better than the 2014-2017 Subaru Foresters. So it's true while VW reliability has been spotty in the past I would recommend getting a 2014 or newer Tiguan over most other competitive brands.

Is Tiguan high maintenance?

The average total annual cost for repairs and maintenance on a Volkswagen Tiguan is $730, compared to an average of $521 for compact SUVs and $652 for all vehicle models.

What is the common problem of Volkswagen Tiguan?

Common faults included non-engine electrical and infotainment faults (of which both petrol and diesel models suffered). The diesels suffered more from engine electrical issues – 5.0% of owners surveyed experienced this issue, against 1.6% of owners of petrol Tiguans.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-26
  • VIN: WVGBV7AX3BW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My Tiguan randomly shuts down or stalls while driving. I have come very close to accidents because It is in the middle of the road where I can't pull over, people coming around a curve behind me that may not have time to brake, specifically RV's and Semi-trucks. It is terrifying. I have maintained my vehicle meticulously and payed thousands in repairs only to be told by dealerships and VW corporate offices that there is nothing they will or can do and that there are no recalls and out of warranty. However...There WAS one in 2014 citing DANGEROUS to drive because of stalling. According to KBB. I don't know what else to do and I am not able to get a new vehicle.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-06

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-24
  • VIN: Wvgav7ax1bw
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Clock spring in steering column has snapped. Because if a previous recall, this part is covered under warranty. New clock spring is on back order without any ETA when one will be available. Car horn is disabled and airbags will not deploy if an accident does occur. State safety inspection can not/will not pass as a result of this broken part. I do not have the luxury of renting a car until this part comes in to the US. Per various forums, possibly 6000-8000 clock springs on back order

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-13
  • VIN: wvgbv7ax5bw
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The clock spring is broken in my 2011 VW Tiguan at 114,000 miles. Therefore, the driver airbag on the steering wheel does not work. Therefore, there is a safety issue if one drives the car. The problem is not fixed because there are no parts to fix it. Apparently there is a chip in the clock spring and there are no chips available to manufacture replacement springs. I was told that the part has been on back order since October 2021. I was told that the part may be available in July 2022, but there are no guarantees. Until a replacement part is available, the vehicle is potentially unsafe to drive.

2011 Volkswagen Tiguan recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan.

2015-08-04
  • Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Volkswagen CC, and Passat, 2010-2013 Eos, 2011-2014 Golf, GTI, Jetta, and Tiguan, and 2012-2014 Jetta Sportwagen vehicles. In the affected vehicles, debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag.
  • Consequence: A loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install a protective cover over the steering wheel clock spring if the air bag light is off. If the airbag light is on and the steering wheel clock spring requires replacement, dealers will install a new steering wheel clock spring. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987.
2014-07-21
  • Manufacturer: Volkswagen of America, Inc.
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2009-2014 Tiguan vehicles manufactured July 2007 to June 2014. When using winterized fuel, in certain conditions bubbles may form in the fuel system which could result in the vehicle stalling.
  • Consequence: A vehicle stall increases the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle's software to increase the fuel pump pressure, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin August 19, 2014. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 24AV/2W.
2013-11-22
  • Manufacturer: Volkswagen of America, Inc.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING:FUSES AND CIRCUIT BREAKERS
  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 Tiguan vehicles manufactured July 2007 through June 2011. Due to a problem with the fuse for the exterior lights, the holder for the fuse that controls the vehicle's exterior lights circuit may melt.
  • Consequence: If the holder melts, there may be a partial loss of exterior lighting. Reduced vehicle illumination diminishes the vehicle's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuse, free of charge. Owners may contact Volkswagen at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's recall number is 97Z9/2V.

Negative 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan car reviews

  1. Durward Pollich 2024-10-18

We've been leasing our Tiguan for almost a year now and it's been a blast to drive! It's zippy, responsive, and handles great in the snow. While we've had a few minor issues, the warranty has covered them all. The only downside we've experienced is the gas mileage, which isn't as good as our 2003 Honda Pilot. Additionally, the cloth interior can get a bit messy, but it's nothing a quick vacuum can't fix. The trunk is a bit small for larger items, like a set of golf clubs, and my husband has found the driver's seat to be a bit uncomfortable. Overall, we're really enjoying our Tiguan - it's like a souped-up VW Golf, but without the Audi A5 price tag!

  2. Emile Stroman 2024-09-29

I was really impressed with the amount of room in this car. As someone who is 6'4

  3. Kameron Greenfelder 2024-08-22

After test driving two different VW cars twice, we decided that it wasn't the same car we remembered from 1995. Unfortunately, it didn't feel solid, lacked pick up, and wasn't very comfortable. We were disappointed that we had to choose another car, but we ultimately found one we love - the Ford Edge.

  4. Santino Kirlin 2024-08-14

I purchased a Tiguan in December and unfortunately, it has been in the Service department numerous times due to a clunking sound. The front drive axle was replaced during the first visit, and during the second visit, the complete transmission was replaced, which took four weeks to complete. However, the car is back in the shop again due to a clunking sound when putting it in gear, and the issue seems to be elusive. While it is disappointing to have these issues with a vehicle that is quite expensive, I am confident that the dealership will resolve the issue. I would recommend waiting until all the bugs have been taken care of before purchasing this car.

  5. Ransom McLaughlin 2024-06-01

The car handles very well, like a Go-cart. It would be great for the curvy mountain roads in Switzerland. However, the roads in the US with the many pot holes are bad for the firm suspension. You may need to replace the bushings and bearings quite frequently. The gas mileage is not good for the size of the car and it requires premium gas. After 80K miles, some problems may arise. Every service can cost over 1000$, and the last one cost over 3000$. Although it lacks luxury features such as leather seats, heated seats, camera, GPS, tire pressure display, and mpg-display, it is a good car for winter and for getting from A to B. However, it may not be the best option for larger persons or for longer trips exceeding 2 hours.

Positive 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan car reviews

  1. Nickolas Mante 2024-11-28

Great car! The cross over has great performance.

  2. Gunnar DuBuque 2024-11-09

The Turbo makes all the difference. Great SUV!

  3. Frederic Kuhlman 2024-06-26

Just bought the SEL. It's such a nice crossover! It has all the features I need, and some that I'm still figuring out how to use. It's very peppy and handles well. The turbo is good on gas, although it's not the smoothest. Overall, it's a very nice driving machine.

  4. Raphael Orn 2024-06-18

I see that you have previously owned cars such as Audi A4, Acura TSX, and Passat 3.6L 4Motion. I must say that the Tiguan is a very solid auto, and it is fairly quiet for an SUV. In fact, it actually rides nicer than the 2006 Passat that you previously owned. While I cannot comment on city mileage, the gas mileage is running at an impressive 26-27 on the highway, with 90% of the miles being highway miles. Although the car is a little pricier compared to others in its class range, you will notice the difference in build quality when you knock on the doors of the others. The Tiguan gets the best crash ratings, which is very important to me. It has substantial power for a 2.0L engine. If you are in the market for a small SUV, I would highly recommend this car. The Bluetooth works very well, the nav is acceptable, and the iPod connect is great.

  5. Aron Bednar 2024-05-20

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my new Tiguan. I've had it for about a week now and I must say, I absolutely love the newly designed grill/face! I've been doing a side by side comparison with my wife's BMW X3 and so far, the Tiguan is proving to be the better ride.
