  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2018 Volkswagen e-Golf and Golf R vehicles, and Audi A3 Sedan and RS3 vehicles. The rear seat frame head restraint guide sleeves may be incorrectly welded to the seat frame.
  • Consequence: If the guide sleeves are incorrectly welded, in the event of a crash, the rear seat head restraints may have reduced stability, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen and Audi will notify their owners, and dealers will inspect the guide sleeves for incorrect welds, replacing the rear seat frame, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began December 28, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's numbers for this recall are 72H8 (VW) and 72H9(Audi).

Unfortunately, due to the bumper to bumper traffic, the 107 mile fully charged battery drops down to 87 within 10 minutes and then down to 55 before I get home. It takes 22 hours to fully charge, so I have to charge it every night for 12 hours and hope that it is fully charged. Although I was told by sales to “realistically” expect 100 miles per charge, not the 126 advertised, I still enjoy driving it. However, I have experienced some issues with the delay function. I put it on for the first time and in the morning, my car was still at 55. Overall, I am still happy with my purchase despite these minor setbacks.

    I recently purchased a car in California and informed the dealership that I would be relocating to Georgia within the year. Unfortunately, I was not informed that the car would not be serviceable in Georgia. I had the car shipped to Georgia and when it was time for its first maintenance, I discovered that no dealerships in the area were trained to service it. I was also informed that having it serviced by a non-dealership mechanic could potentially void my warranty. When I contacted VW to inquire about the possibility of having someone trained in the area, I was informed that it was my responsibility to know whether or not they service the vehicle in other states. I was disappointed with the lack of customer service and the fact that a car made by a major manufacturer could not be serviced by at least one local dealership. If you are considering purchasing this car and anticipate moving to another state during your ownership, it may be worth considering another vehicle instead.

    I have been experiencing some issues with my car's high voltage battery and charging system for the past 11 weeks. Unfortunately, VW did not cover the charging issue as my car was just over 5 years old. Since my local VW dealership did not have trained technicians on site, my car was sent to Colonial VW in Massachusetts. Although the repair took longer than expected, I was able to get in touch with Sylvia at VW of North America customer care who has been very helpful in finding a way forward. After several calls, I suggested that VW offer to buy the car back and Sylvia immediately provided me with a process for VW to consider an offer. Although it has been frustrating, I am grateful for the support I have received from Sylvia and the team at VW of North America. It's going to be 12 weeks next week without a car. I wouldn't recommend buying a Volkswagen, their service is terrible.

    When we received the e-Golf, the company promised a range of over 100 miles on a full charge. However, after a software update, we experienced some issues with the car. The range dropped to just 54 miles, and the charger caused some problems in our home. We also had some difficulties during the winter months, as the car did not have heating and we had to pull over a few times due to running out of battery. Unfortunately, attempts to fix the problem were unsuccessful, and the VW Co and Financial office refused to take the car back. Instead, they charged us a $2500 early return fee.

    When using the heater, it will drain the battery and reduce the range to around 60 miles. To improve my mileage, I turn off the heater and use regeneration stage 1 when I'm not accelerating in traffic. The only other high voltage battery usage is for the AC. If I need more time on the battery while driving around town, I slow down. That's why this car gives more miles in the city than on the highway. Currently, my only issue is the battery capacity, but I plan to buy a car with better battery capacity soon.

    In just a few years, we can expect to see some fantastic new cars from China, but in the meantime, a used e-Golf is the perfect solution. With the same high-quality cabin as my previous Audi, but without all the unnecessary bells and whistles, I couldn't be happier with my e-Golf. In fact, I believe it's the best car VW has ever built, far superior to the oversized ID-4. I've traded in my e-Golf twice now, and each time I paid less than $15,000 for a car with less than 10,000 miles. While prices have risen since then, it's still a great bargain. I'll never go back to an ICE vehicle. It's a shame that this perfect car was introduced before the US market was ready for it and priced too high. VW was so close to a winner. If the price had been a little lower and the range a little greater, this car could have outsold the Beetle. However, there are still some great options out there, like the BYD Dolphin with a 200+ mile range and $16,000 price tag. Another great option is the Hyundai Ionic 5, which looks just like a slightly bigger e-Golf, but unfortunately, the $43,000+ price tag is not very enticing. In my opinion, the best electric car you can buy today in the US is a 2019 VW e-Golf, with many available for under $25,000 (up from $17,500 six months ago).

    I've been driving my 2017 VW Egolf for a month now and it's been amazing! As someone who works in the service department at a major VW dealership, I can confidently say that the '17 model is a no-brainer. It has 50% more range than the '16, amazing pick up, and regen. Plus, the infotainment system is updated and perfect.

While the range and performance could be better, the car still offers an excellent driving experience. If you're a fan of VW Golfs, this car may be perfect for you. The Driver's Assistance Package is a standout feature, offering the best Adaptive Cruise Control available.
