2010 Volkswagen Tiguan problems
The Volkswagen Tiguan (German pronunciation: ) is a series of cars produced by German manufacturer Volkswagen since 2007, sitting between the smaller T-Roc and the larger Touareg in the company's crossover SUV range. The first generation was based on the PQ46 platform, while the second generation, released in 2016, utilizes the Volkswagen Group MQB A2 platform. It is generally considered to be a medium-sized SUV in Europe, while in North America it is considered to be a compact crossover.
The name Tiguan is a portmanteau of the German words Tiger ("tiger") and Leguan ("iguana") and won a naming contest by German car magazine publisher Auto Bild—from a field of names that also included Namib, Rockton, Samun and Nanuk.
As of the spring of 2020, six million units had been sold worldwide, with 910,926 units being manufactured in 2019 alone, making the Tiguan the best-selling car overall in the Volkswagen Group. It was also the best-selling SUV in Europe.
Its larger counterparts include the Tiguan Allspace, a long-wheelbase family-oriented version of the Tiguan with three-row seating, and the Tiguan X, a coupé SUV.

Common 2010 Volkswagen Tiguan problems
The Volkswagen Tiguan, introduced in 2007, has been a popular choice for many car buyers. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of problems, especially in the 2010 model. This article will discuss the most common problems with the Volkswagen Tiguan 2010 based on complaints from owners of this car.
One of the most common problems with the 2010 Tiguan is engine failure. Car Complaints reports that engine failure impacts the 2010 Tiguan most frequently, with the average cost to fix being $3900. This issue seems to appear most often around 96,000 miles. The most common solutions for engine failure include replacing the engine, decoking the valves, replacing the rear seal and PCV valve, and replacing the timing chain.
Another common issue with the 2010 Tiguan is the timing chain tensioner. This problem is prevalent in the 2011 Tiguan but also affects the 2009 model. The timing chain tensioner tends to cost about $3200 to fix and happens around 89,000 miles for the 2009 model. The best way to fix this problem is to replace the engine or replace the timing chain tensioner.
The 2010 Tiguan also has issues with the automatic parking brake failing to release, particularly when on a slope. This can cause damage as the engine drags the car forward. Replacement parts can be expensive, so make sure the parking brake works correctly with no warning lights. Exterior rear door handles have also been known to stick in the open position, preventing the doors from closing when shut from the inside. This fault stems from a design flaw that required the door to be dismantled and corrected under warranty.
In addition to these mechanical issues, the 2010 Tiguan has also been reported to have problems with its sunroof leaking all four corners. Shocks are also known to be loud, and door handles may fall off. Check engine lights, flashing coolant sensors, and coolant problems are also common complaints among Tiguan owners.
It is worth noting that while the 2010 Tiguan has its share of problems, the latest post-2017 model finished in top position in the small SUV class aged 0-3 years in the most recent study, with an excellent overall score of 97%. VW as a brand, however, finished in a slightly disappointing 22nd place out of 32 manufacturers.
In conclusion, while the Volkswagen Tiguan 2010 has its share of problems, it is essential to note that these issues are not unique to this model. It is always recommended to do thorough research and have any used car inspected by a trusted mechanic before purchasing.
What is the common problem of Volkswagen Tiguan?
The turbocharger is known to malfunction or fail in many Volkswagen Tiguans. Some owners have reported that their cars experience a severe lack of power or struggle to maintain motorway speeds. If you hear the engine overworking, it could be a sign of a malfunctioning turbocharger.
What is the most common problem with Volkswagen Tiguan 2010?
Engine failure is the most common issue reported for the 2010 Tiguan. Volkswagen improved the appearance and performance of the 2010 Tiguan in later models but did nothing for the most reported problem: engine issues. We see more improvements for the 2020 model, however.
How many miles will a 2010 Volkswagen Tiguan last?
On average, a Tiguan can last between 150,000 and 200,000 miles, given proper care and maintenance. According to RepairPal, the compact SUV requires unscheduled garage visits about 0.92 times a year, with a 12% chance of encountering severe problems.
Are Volkswagen Tiguan expensive to repair?
The average total annual cost for repairs and maintenance on a Volkswagen Tiguan is $730, compared to an average of $521 for compact SUVs and $652 for all vehicle models.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-30
- VIN: WVGAV7AXXAW
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Timing chain/extensioner broke My car suddenly started jerking or jumping when I was idling. I pulled into a parking lot and ended up having to have it towed. It does not run now and I was told it needed a new engine. I was told that there was a known issue and class action lawsuit with the timing chain but that I had passed the extended warranty. My care only has 50,000 miles on it so a timing chain should not fail so soon. I am sure that there extended warranty left a lot of engine failures out.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-20
- VIN: wvgav7ax5aw
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The fusebox that was included in the NHTSA recall #13V569000 for lighting defects was never resolved correctly on this car and many other VW Tiquans like this. I am a 45 year ASE licensed professional automotive technician. I am an ASE Master tech with current L1-L9 licensing. I am also an ex GM mastertech as well. Part time automotive instructor too. I've seen the multiple cases filed with the NHTSA regarding this melting fuse box that causes multiple issues whether they be with lighting, causes the engine & whole electrical system to shut down, same with several computers. I've scanned the system using VAG-COM and have two different sets of scan data to show clearly the issue. The car will load a multitude of erroneous codes because the central electrical, ABS, engine computer & other modules lose power causing a VERY dangerous situation for the operator of the vehicle. Not to mention a fire danger. I have pictures of the before and after repair I did on this vehicle. It still needs the fuse box replaced. I replaced the melted #6 wire that attaches to the fuse box (VW part# 1K0 937 125D) which was included in the original NHTSA recall I mentioned at the beginning of this essay. The vehicle & component is available for inspection at any time. This vehicle stalled & left my wife & kids stranded several times making it incredibly unsafe to drive. The car has been ok now for 2 weeks after my temporary repair. Prior NHTSA complaints from other owners with similar issues were 10551509, 10552308, 10553122, 10553811, & 10776567.

- Summary: 07/05/19, WAS DRIVING AT APPROX 3:30 PM WEST ON I-90 AT THE 68 MILE MARKER WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING DIED. THE NEXT DAY I WAS INFORMED BY A AAA MECHANIC THAT THE TIMING CHAIN HAD MOST LIKELY BEEN THE CULPRIT AND ACCORDINGLY TO SAME, DESTROYED THE ENGINE REQUIRING A NEW ENGINE. I FOUND OUT LATER THAT THERE HAD BEEN A CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST SAME THAT HAD BEEN SETTLED BETWEEN VW AND THE CLAIMANTS THOUGH I HAD TRAVELED 100,020 MILES WHEN THIS OCCURRED AND WAS ENTITLED TO "0". I BELIEVE THAT THIS OCCURRENCE HAS HAPPENED TO NUMEROUSLY, AND LIKE MYSELF, MANY WOULD NOT BE APPRISED OF THE POTENTIAL ISSUE SINCE MOST WOULD NOT HAVE ANY REASON TO THINK OTHERWISE. HOWEVER, I WAS TRAVELING AT 70 MPH AND IN THE MIDDLE OF A FOUR OR FIVE LANE FEDERAL INTERSTATE IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC - AND IN THE CHICAGO VICINITY - HAD I HAD LESS FORETHOUGHT A TERRIBLE CALAMITY COULD HAVE OCCURRED. I BELIEVE THAT VW SHOULD RECALL EVERY ENGINE WITH THIS MALADY - AND SHOULD DO SO DESPITE SETTLING WITH A BUNCH OF LAWYERS. [SEE HTTPS://TIMINGCHAINLITIGATION.COM/]. I AM OUT THE ENTIRETY OF MY INVESTMENT AND STILL WITH 6K LEFT TO PAY ON THE CAR [I BOUGHT IT USED] OVER THE NEXT 2.5 YEARS. I've owned my 2010 Tiguan SEL4Motion for a year now and have driven it through a harsh north east winter. It performed FANTASTICALLY in all snow conditions with standard Pirreli all seasons. The engine and transmission are flawless, with the transmission being as smooth as my BMW X3. The car boasts many high-end features, such as xenon adaptive headlights with turn spotlights, electric folding heated mirrors, touchscreen navigation, and heated washer nozzles. These amenities are truly amazing. The only issues I have encountered are two minor rattles (seat belt and AC vent) and the occasional freezing of the touch screen nav/radio unit after a phone call. However, this can be easily fixed by turning off the car, opening the door, and restarting it.
-
I recently got my Tiguan just 2 months ago, which is my 2nd VW. My previous car was a Passat 2007 and I had no complaints about it. After the lease ended, I decided to switch to a Tiguan 4 motion and I must say, the safety sensation in the rain and while cornering is simply amazing. The interior details are of great quality and the Dynaudio system is awesome. The Xenon lights and memory seat are great features too!
-
We chose the Tiguan over the Toyota Venza because of its ground clearance, handling, and all-weather reliability, as well as its ability to accommodate our two large dogs. We appreciate the clean, sharp design of this vehicle, and it meets all of our needs perfectly. We are thoroughly enjoying our new car!
-
I've had my Tiguan for 4 months now and I love it! I find something new to like almost every day. The pickup and handling are wonderful, and I haven't had a single problem so far. The sunroof is awesome, and the seats are really firm and comfortable. I've been getting much better gas mileage than advertised, averaging 28 MPG.
-
I love researching cars, so I cross-shopped the Audi Q5, VW CC, and more. After careful consideration, I was sold on the CC. Although I initially thought the Tiguan was too small, I never considered researching it. However, when I was at the dealership to get the CC, I saw a fully loaded White Gold SEL and decided to take it for a spin. I was immediately sold and bought it on the spot. Even after a few days of driving it, I'm still discovering new things to love about it. For example, I was pleasantly surprised to find a backup camera when I put the car in reverse, which I didn't even know was there until after I bought it. The ride is incredibly smooth and responsive, and the interior on the SEL is outstanding - it's even nicer than the Audi Q5. I highly recommend this car!

I previously owned a Chevy and Honda, but I decided to go with the Tiguan because of its manual transmission and stylish appearance. Unfortunately, I have had to take the car to the dealer for repairs three times in just over a year, which is more than I ever had to do with my previous cars. I was warned about buying a VW, but I didn't think it could be that bad since so many people own them. I still love the car, but I never expected to have so many problems with a car that's only a year old. It's disappointing that VW aims to be the top car seller, yet produces such poor quality vehicles. I have decided that this will be my last VW and I am considering trading it in for a Rav4 before I have to pay for more repairs. I had hoped to keep this car for six years, but unfortunately, that won't be possible.

The timing chain is a major issue that can cause significant damage to the engine, as I unfortunately experienced myself. Despite VW's class action lawsuit and their offer to cover a portion of the repair costs, the expense of fixing a high mileage car is simply not worth it. As a result, I have made the difficult decision to move on from VW. It's a shame, as I truly loved my car!

I really like this SUV, although it is a bit small for my taste. The cabin is very quiet and the engine is not intrusive, unlike the RAV4, which also has a 4-cylinder engine and a turbo on top of that. It handles potholes very well and has some of the best brakes I've experienced. The cornering and steering feel is very precise, and the transmission shifts smoothly and quickly when needed. However, the accelerator pedal is not very sensitive and is too stiff for my liking. The car doesn't respond immediately to pedal input, which could be due to either turbo lag or the pedal being too stiff. When you release the accelerator pedal, the car almost jolts and doesn't roll, which is different from what other cars normally do. Additionally, there is limited visibility from the front.

We purchased this car thinking German engineering is built strong and tuff. One week from owning the car the breaks start to squeek loud( high pitch sound).I took it to the Van nuys dealer and they said it is break dust and it will go away.We had a crv before that and never had a problem, Regretably, we are looking to trade this car with eithier another crv,rav4 or cx7. I guess the German cars are not so strong after all.

I purchased this car 2.5 years ago with 80k miles and unfortunately, it has had several issues since then. In less than a month of owning the car, the turbo malfunctioned and required a repair that cost over $1,000. Additionally, less than 6 months later, the sunroof began to leak and required two repairs, costing around $750. The timing chain tensioner of tiguans around 80k miles tend to go out and unfortunately, mine did, costing around $2,000 and taking a considerable amount of time to fix. Furthermore, the valve on the turbo was leaking and we had to get the camshaft replaced, which was fixed less than 2 weeks ago, costing about $600 for both. Unfortunately, not even a week after the last problem was fixed, my check engine light came on again and this time it is my rear main engine seal. It has a crack in it. Despite taking great care of this car and it having only one previous owner who also took great care of it, I have spent around $6,000 on repairs alone, not including tires and regular maintenance. While it has been a stressful and costly experience, I have decided to trade it in and move on. I will be exploring other car brands in the future.
