Volkswagen Passat problems

The Volkswagen Passat is a nameplate of large family cars (D-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen since 1973. It has been marketed variously as the Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat, with varying body styles such as saloon, estate, and hatchback.
A "four-door coupé" variant of the Passat with a lower roof was released in the North American market in 2008 as the Passat CC, which was then renamed to Volkswagen CC. The CC was succeeded by the Arteon in 2017.
In January 2011, Volkswagen introduced a separate Passat model line, internally designated "Volkswagen New Midsize Sedan" or NMS, that was manufactured in the US at the Chattanooga assembly plant and in China at Nanjing by SAIC-Volkswagen. Developed to increase Volkswagen sales in North America, the Passat NMS is larger and cost less to produce. sold in the North America, South Korea, China, and Middle East. The separate B8 Passat model entered production in Europe in 2014, based on the MQB platform.
In 2019, the Passat NMS program was split into two as the North American one continued being produced on an older platform while the Chinese Passat moved on to the MQB platform, which resulted in Volkswagen marketed three models under the Passat nameplate globally at that time. The North American Passat was discontinued after the 2022 model year.
Volkswagen ended the production of the saloon Passat for the European market in 2022. The B9 Passat, released in 2023, is only available in an estate body style. The Passat continues to be available as a saloon in China.

Common Volkswagen Passat problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Volkswagen Passat, several common problems have been identified:
- Engine Oil Leaks: Another prevalent issue is engine oil leaks in Volkswagen Passat cars. These leaks often stem from components like camshaft chain tensioners and valve cover gaskets, leading to oil seepage and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.
- Digital Display Faults: The digital display in the instrument cluster of Volkswagen Passat vehicles is prone to issues such as going dark or losing functionality after driving. This can affect the driver's ability to monitor critical information like speed, fuel levels, and warning lights.
- ABS Light Due to ABS Control Module Failure: A common problem reported by Passat owners is the illumination of the ABS light due to ABS control module failure. This issue can impact the vehicle's braking system, potentially compromising safety on the road.
- Rear Wheel Bearing Housing: Some Passat owners have experienced problems with the rear wheel bearing housing. Issues in this area can lead to noise, vibration, and compromised handling, affecting the overall driving experience and safety of the vehicle.
- Sunroof Trim Issues: Another common problem involves sunroof trim malfunctions. Problems with the sunroof trim can result in water leaks, wind noise, and even potential structural issues if not addressed in a timely manner.
These common problems with the Volkswagen Passat highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any signs of trouble to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.
Are Volkswagen Passat cars reliable?
The VW Passat scores well in major reliability ratings with a 3.5 out of 5.0 from RepairPal and a 4.5 out of 5.0 from J.D. Power. Common Volkswagen Passat problems include issues with interior accessories, steering problems, and oil sludge problems.
What are the disadvantages of the Passat?
Some of the cons include:
- Price: The Passat can be more expensive than some other midsize sedans.
- Handling: While the Passat has a comfortable ride, it may not be as sporty as some other midsize sedans.
- Limited trunk space: Depending on the model, the Passat may have less trunk space than some other midsize sedans.
How many miles will a Passat last?
Most Volkswagen vehicles will last between 100,000 and 200,000 miles, although well-kept models can last even longer than that. All VWs are remarkably reliable vehicles. When it comes to longevity, the Golf, Passat, Jetta, and Beetle are known to be particularly long-lasting.

- Summary: I purchased a used vehicle but have found out the oxygen sensor is feeding false error codes to the main OBC causing leaks into driver compartment causing engine to stall while auto in motion and most importantly causing steering wheel to lock, have spoken with VWoA but they have no direct influence with VW or dealerships even if a warranty issue because all parties are independent contractors and all they are able to do is try and help. My name has not been transferred to registration because of smog requirements so you may call me [XXX] my telephone number is [XXX] my case# with VWoA is [XXX], I myself have learned to deal with defects but should this matter be more widespread which I cannot find out because the last case regarding the sensors was sealed in an agreement made by the California ARB, EPA and VW and Audi through a settlement signed in December 2021. Once again my hands are tied from taking much more action but I believe your department whether is able to enforce this matter or not should at least investigate and issue warnings to advise people of what can happen so if they can even at own cost seek appropriate repairs before more damages accrued. Also if this sensor is effecting more models and manufacturers an appropriate temporary fix should be seeker since no long term solutions are available at this time INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- Summary: This is the second car like this that I have had. Both had the same issues. when at highway speeds of 65 or greater the steering wheel will shake left and right. It is almost like there is a wheel that is not balanced. That is not the case, I have had the car in the shop 3 times now for this same issue. The last car I had(2015 VW Passat TDI) my son totaled it out in January. It also had the same issues but the dealer ship in Fort Wayne Indiana got it fixed and never really told me what was wrong with it other than they had to call the manufacturer to resolve the issue. The new car has been to the shop and I recorded what it was doing while driving for the technician to see and he put it back up on his lift the day after I got it back from them. he was able to replicate what it was doing for me on the road in the air and on his lift without the car moving. The steering wheel will shake from left to right and as speed picks up it becomes faster and more violent. I was told that I needed a new "Rack and Pinion". The dealership explained to me that the main steering gear is bad and since it is electronic the computer doesn't know where zero should be, thus causing the jerking of wheel from left to right as the computer is guessing and then over correcting. This information would have been more helpful upfront before I paid to have the car worked on chasing other issues that did not resolve the problem. So as of right now I am $1,700.00 in on this issue and being told that it's another $3,500.00 to fix said issue with no guarantee that it will actually be fixed. I asked what would happen if the gear actually broke and I was told to always wear my seatbelt and to keep both hands on the steering wheel. The faster you go the harder it shakes, when your at highway speeds and go to pass someone the car really shakes.

Volkswagen Passat 2008
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-07
- Date Complaint: 2024-08-30
- VIN: WVWDU73CX8E
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: My son bought this used car. The STOP ENGINE light came on, got an oil change but the light did not go away. Were told that the oil pressure might be the issue so took it to the mechanic. We were told it was most likely the oil pressure switch. There were multiple codes(cones) and were cleared. The switch was replaced but the engine light's still on & the STOP ENGINE comes on but goes off. It appears it is a gas pump issue that it might be manufacture fault. Is there a recall for this issue on this 2008 Passat? It's my [XXX] 's first car, he saved & bought it but it's dangerous...he got it diagnosed & was told it's a $5,000 job. If it's an oil/gas pump manufacturer issue, is Volkswagen responsible? INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I purchased my 2008 CPO Passat with 30k miles about 6 months ago and it has been a great experience so far. The dealer replaced the headlight under warranty and the car has been running smoothly ever since. It's a luxury car that comes at an affordable price, and people often compliment me on its unique design. One thing that sets the Passat apart is that it's built in Deutchland (Germany), which gives it a special touch compared to other VW models manufactured in Mexico. However, the 2012 Passat is now manufactured in VW's new Tennessee plant, and I'm confident that the folks from Tenn. will do a great job. I'm really happy with the car and the fact that it gets an impressive 33 MPG.

Congratulations on your new car! It's great to hear that you're aware of the upcoming costs, but it sounds like you made a fantastic choice. This 90's VW is definitely the most stylish one out there, and it's great that it has all the bells and whistles. It must be so much fun to drive, and it's clear that it was built with class.

After reading several negative reviews, I couldn't help but wonder whether my experience was just a stroke of luck or whether it is more representative of the norm. However, I am happy to report that my Passat has been a reliable car. With 95,000 miles on the clock, I have only had to deal with two service matters. The fuel pump failed at 88,000 miles, but the parts and labor cost me less than $300. I also replaced one CV boot as a precaution, which cost me about $300 in parts and labor. That's it! The car has outstanding performance and handling, and the interior is understated yet elegant with good ergonomics. The seats are firm but wonderful for long trips.

Hi there! I'm excited to share my experience with TDIs. I've actually owned three of them so far! My first was a 2003 Jetta TDI with a 5-speed manual transmission, which was amazing and got an impressive 47MPG. Then I upgraded to a 2010 Jetta Sportwagen TDI with a DSG transmission, which was also great and got 39MPG. However, I've been eagerly waiting for the Passat TDI because of its size and comfort, both of which are top-notch in my opinion. I've been driving my Passat for about 2 weeks now and have already put 1000 miles on it. I'm averaging 41.5 MPG, mostly commuting at 70-75 MPH. Overall, it's a very nice car, but I have noticed a slight wandering sensation at higher speeds, almost like driving through gusty winds. It's a bit annoying, but I'm hoping the dealer can help me out. I suspect it might be the tires, but we'll see... Let me know if you have any questions!

Although this car has had some issues, I am confident in my decision to not purchase another VW. The alternator needed to be replaced within 3 weeks of purchase, but it was still under warranty. However, over the last 4 years, I have spent more on repairs than the car is worth, and now the catalytic converters are about to go. The drains for the sunroof also leaked into the car, causing damage to the electronic brain, which required a $2,000 repair. After sharing horror stories with other VW owners at my mechanic's, I have decided that it is time to move on from this brand.

I had a wagon with a 5-speed manual that I drove a lot. Unfortunately, the fan relays would blow out every 18 months, and the muffler cost $600 and had to be replaced even if you just needed the pipe done. Additionally, they wanted to swap the steering rack too, not just the entire front end. However, I found that it was cheaper to just buy new tires every year. The drivetrain became misaligned, creating an interesting dogleg in the shift pattern. Eventually, it decided it had had enough of Cleveland and just started to fall apart at age 8. During summer months, wax sealant would drip out of every orifice. I hope this helps!

Back in 2008, my family purchased a 99 Passat auto 1.8 turbo with roughly 87,000 miles on it. Since then, it has been my daily driver and is now about to hit 120,000 miles. Throughout the years, we have had to replace a few parts, including the power steering rack ($800), ABS break module ($250 - we did the install), turbo ($1000), and engine coil packs ($300). We have also had to replace some smaller parts, such as the headlight assembly that shattered randomly while driving and the windshield wiper motor that broke ($100 for that part!!!). Of course, we have also kept up with regular maintenance, such as tires, oil changes, and brakes.

While this vehicle is fun to drive, unfortunately, it has spent more time with the mechanic than with us. We had to make 5 trips to fix the injectors and 4 trips the second time. I can't believe we had to replace 2 sets of injectors in only 140Km. All 4 wheel bearings failed before 80Km, AC failed, trunk release failed, and so on. The dealer would try something and when it wasn't fixed, they told us to book another appointment. This was not ideal as we live 5 hours from the nearest dealer. In one case, it took 4 trips to fix one little problem. Unfortunately, we did not receive the support we were hoping for from the VW dealer. We contacted VW Canada, but all we got was

I'm selling my second Passat wagon, but I have to admit, I'm a bit hesitant after my experience with the first one. While new or nearly new VWs are fantastic cars - reliable, luxurious, and more - I've found that once they hit the 5-year mark, things tend to go downhill. As the saying goes, a check engine light is practically a VW trademark, and it's always on and always expensive to fix. That being said, the car does feel very solid and performs well in the snow. The engine may be a bit slow to accelerate, and the gas mileage is mediocre, but overall it's a decent ride.
