The Volkswagen Passat is a nameplate of large family cars (D-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen since 1973. It has been marketed variously as the Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat, with varying body styles such as saloon, estate, and hatchback.

A "four-door coupé" variant of the Passat with a lower roof was released in the North American market in 2008 as the Passat CC, which was then renamed to Volkswagen CC. The CC was succeeded by the Arteon in 2017.

In January 2011, Volkswagen introduced a separate Passat model line, internally designated "Volkswagen New Midsize Sedan" or NMS, that was manufactured in the US at the Chattanooga assembly plant and in China at Nanjing by SAIC-Volkswagen. Developed to increase Volkswagen sales in North America, the Passat NMS is larger and cost less to produce. sold in the North America, South Korea, China, and Middle East. The separate B8 Passat model entered production in Europe in 2014, based on the MQB platform.

In 2019, the Passat NMS program was split into two as the North American one continued being produced on an older platform while the Chinese Passat moved on to the MQB platform, which resulted in Volkswagen marketed three models under the Passat nameplate globally at that time. The North American Passat was discontinued after the 2022 model year.

Volkswagen ended the production of the saloon Passat for the European market in 2022. The B9 Passat, released in 2023, is only available in an estate body style. The Passat continues to be available as a saloon in China.

Common 2008 Volkswagen Passat problems

The Volkswagen Passat, a popular midsize sedan, has been associated with various common problems based on complaints from its owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is engine misfires, particularly in mid-2000s models.

Another common problem is engine oil leaks, which tend to occur in the Passat due to the car's tendency to leak oil from the engine, necessitating early replacement of the liquid. This issue can lead to more severe problems if not addressed promptly.

The digital display in the instrument cluster is also known to have faults, with the display going dark or losing its ability after driving. This problem can be particularly frustrating for drivers, as it can affect their ability to monitor important vehicle information.

In addition to these issues, the Passat has been plagued with problems related to the electrical system. Volkswagen has released several software updates to address these difficulties, which are particularly prevalent in certain models.

The clock spring, which is responsible for communication between the steering wheel panel and the car's computers, is also known to break in the Passat, leading to a complete loss of communication between the two. This problem can affect the airbags, which may not deploy in a collision if the clock spring is faulty.

The engine rattle and trouble starting are also common problems in the Passat, particularly in models with high mileage. This issue is often caused by a loose timing chain, which can wear out quickly in the Passat and may need to be replaced every 20,000 miles.

Water ingress into the passenger footwell is another problem that affects the Passat, particularly in models with pollen filter housing that is not re-seated correctly or battery housing that is blocked, preventing water from draining out properly.

Finally, the Passat is known to have issues with the child lock for the rear seats, which can disengage without warning due to a faulty locking mechanism. This problem can be particularly concerning for parents with young children.

In summary, the Volkswagen Passat has been associated with various common problems, including engine misfires, engine oil leaks, digital display faults, electrical system issues, clock spring failure, engine rattle and trouble starting, water ingress, and child lock problems. These issues can affect the reliability and safety of the vehicle, and it is essential for owners to address them promptly to prevent more severe problems from developing.

  • Summary: My son bought this used car. The STOP ENGINE light came on, got an oil change but the light did not go away. Were told that the oil pressure might be the issue so took it to the mechanic. We were told it was most likely the oil pressure switch. There were multiple codes(cones) and were cleared. The switch was replaced but the engine light's still on & the STOP ENGINE comes on but goes off. It appears it is a gas pump issue that it might be manufacture fault. Is there a recall for this issue on this 2008 Passat? It's my [XXX] 's first car, he saved & bought it but it's dangerous...he got it diagnosed & was told it's a $5,000 job. AIR BAGS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-12-12
  • VIN: WVWJK73C18P
  • Components: AIR BAGS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I BOUGHT THE CAR AROUND MID-SEPTEMBER 2019. I'VE BEEN DRIVING IT SINCE AND JUST RECENTLY, I'D SAY DECEMBER 9TH, 2019 TO BE EXACT, GOT A LETTER IN THE MAIL SAYING MY VEHICLE HAD A RECALL FOR THE AIRBAG. I WENT ONLINE TO THE CAR BRANDS WEBSITE AND LOOKED UP MY EXACT CAR TO VERIFY. UPON DOING THIS, I DISCOVERED IT HAD A SECOND RECALL FOR THE FUEL PUMP. I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR THE FREE REPAIRS, ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THEY CAN'T FIX THE FUEL FUMP ISSUE AS MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. FROM WHAT I'VE BEEN TOLD BY A MECHANIC I WENT TO, THE LIGHT IS ON DUE TO A LEAK IN MY VACUUM PUMP. HE SAID IT'D COST ABOUT $600 FOR PART AND LABOR, BUT THAT THIS FIX ISN'T EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND THAT MY CAR SHOULD RUN WELL ENOUGH WITHOUT THIS FIX. ME BEING BROKE, I DIDN'T GET IT FIXED. WELL, NOW THAT I'M HERE TO GET MY RECALL PARTS FIXED, I'M BEING TOLD I CAN'T GET ONE OF THEM FIXED, AND I'D HAVE TO PAY AROUND $124 FOR A DIAGNOSIS OF WHY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON, OR PAY THE ESTIMATED COST TO FIX WHAT'S CASUING IT (WHICH I'D ONLY KNOW IF I ALLOWED THE DIAGNOSIS). SO NO MATTER WHAT, I'D HAVE TO PAY MONEY, OR JUST NOT GET MY FUEL PUMP, WHICH WAS RECALLED, FIXED. IS THIS SOMETHING THEY CAN DO? SEEMS UNLIKELY THEY'D HAVE TO CLEAR THE LIGHT TO FIX THE FUEL PUMP...

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2008 VW PASSAT LUX WAGON AND HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO ME AT LEAST 6 TIMES SINCE THE END OF JUNE WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR. MOST RECENTLY, A LADY WAS WALKING IN FRONT OF MY CAR IN A CROSSWALK, I HAD STOPPED FOR. AS I BEGAN TO LET OFF THE BRAKE, THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD ABOUT A FOOT, BEFORE I STOPPED IT AGAIN. WE WERE BOTH NOTICEABLY SHAKEN BY WHAT HAD JUST HAPPENED. I TRIED REPORTING THIS INCIDENT AND THE RECALL TO MY LOCAL DEALER, VW OF OLYMPIA< WA> ONLY TO BE TOLD IT DID NOT APPLY TO MY SPECIFIC VIN. I WENT ON TO CONTACT VW CARES ONLY TO BE TOLD THE SAME THING. I DID FILE A REPORT WITH THEIR CASE NUMBER 190810111. THIS SITUATION MAY NOT HAVE BEEN APPARENT TO MY SPECIFIC VIN WHEN THE CAR WAS NEW AND THE RECALL WAS ISSUED. NOW 12 YEARS AND 137K MILES LATER, THERE IT IS. PEOPLE ARE GOING TO GET HURT OR EVEN KILLED IF THIS IS NOT DEALT WITH.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-01-04
  • VIN: WVWJK73C68P
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: "STEERING COLUMN LOCK DEFECTIVE" WARNING DISPLAYS ON THE OBD PANEL REGULARLY, YET RANDOMLY SINCE PURCHASING VEHICLE. BOUGHT IN 2011 ODOMETER 5,989, NOW IN 2019 60,000 MI. HAVE REPORTED THIS TO VW DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES DURING SERVICE MAINTENANCE. ALWAYS TOLD THAT NO CODE POPS, AND NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. YET IT OCCURS REGULARLY CAUSING THE VEHICLE NOT TO START. ON ONE OCCASION, VEHICLE DID START WHILE WARNING WAS ON DISPLAY, ATTEMPTED TO EXIT PARKING LOT, AND WHILE MOVING FORWARD STEERING WAS UNRESPONSIVE. SHUT OFF VEHICLE AND RESTARTED. WARNING DID NOT REAPPEAR. IF YOU REFERENCE - SAFERCAR.GOV - THERE ARE HUNDREDS TO THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS THAT DISCUSS THIS SAME FACTORY DESIGN FLAW; SOME CONSUMERS REPORT VEHICLE SHUTTING DOWN AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WITH THIS DEFECT. ALL HAVE THE SAME QUANTRY: VW WILL NOT ADDRESS. A VOLUNTARY RECALL WAS ISSUED WITHOUT NOTIFICATION TO OWNERS IN USA. IT LIMITED MODEL/YEARS AND IMPOSED AN EXPIRATION DATE, EVEN THOUGH IT MAY AFFECT ALL B6 PASSATS MADE DURING 2005-2010. APPARENTLY, AN OPEN RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR UK OWNERS. MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS DEFECT HAS SERIOUS IF NOT FATAL SAFETY CONCERNS THAT VW IS BEING ALLOWED TO PASS ON AT THE BUYERS EXPENSE. (DEALER QUOTES RANGE FROM $1,500-2,000 AND ABOVE) NOW THAT VW IS MANUFACTURING IN THE US I AM URGING THIS AGENCY TO REINVESTIGATE THIS MANUFACTURE DEFECT AFFECTING SAFE OPERATION. I DO HAVE DATE/TIME STAMPED PHOTOS OF THIS OBD WARNING DISPLAY. IF VW WANTS TO ENJOY CONTINUED MANUFACTURING IN THE US THEN THEY SHOULD BE MADE ACCOUNTABLE FOR REPLACING DEFECTIVE STEERING COLUMN SYSTEMS THROUGH OPEN RECALL TO US BUYERS. THIS HELD TRUE FOR EMISSIONS VIOLATIONS (US STANDARDS VS UK) SHOULDN'T US BUYERS BE GIVEN THE SAME SAFETY CONSIDERATION AS UK BUYERS.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-01-18
  • VIN: WVWLK93CX8E
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: DURING AN UNRELATED SERVICE, MY ENGINE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A TIMING CHAIN PROBLEM. THE SERVICE PERSONNEL INDICATED THAT MY TIMING CHAIN HAS EXTENSIVE WEAR AND WILL FAIL AT SOME POINT IN THE NEAR FUTURE. THE ENGINE ONLY HAS 75,000 MILES. THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING WITH THE LOW MILES ON THE VEHICLE. UPON RESEARCH, I FOUND THAT A GOOD NUMBER OF OTHER VOLKSWAGEN VEHICLES ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. VOLKSWAGEN HAS DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE WITH THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND A DEFECT WITH THE ENGINE. I FEEL THAT A RECALL SHOULD BE DONE BY VOLKSWAGEN TO REMEDY THE MANY VEHICLES WITH THIS PROBLEM.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • VIN: WVWAK73CX8E
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: MY WIFE AND I PURCHASED A 2008 VW PASSAT 2.0 SEDAN NEW FROM A VW DEALERSHIP AND RECENTLY (WITHIN THE PAST 6-8 MONTHS THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON FROM TIME TO TIME). BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS NOT A PRIMARY VEHICLE FOR ME OR MY WIFE IT IS SELDOM DRIVEN, BUT ABOUT 2 TO3 MONTHS AGO I NOTICE THE AIR BAG LIGHT COMING ON WHICH IMMEDIATELY CONCERNED ME AND I REMEMBER HEARING ABOUT THE TAKATA AIR BAG RECALL, BUT DUE TO MY/MY WIFE WORK SCHEDULE IT WAS HARD TO GET TO A DEALER, BUT I RECALL RECEIVING NOTIFICATIONS, BUT I HONESTLY WILL HAVE SEARCH FOR THEM. ANYWAY I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO HAGERTY VOLKSWAGEN AND THEY TOLD ME THAT I MISSED THREE(3) FACTORY RECALLS AND IF I WANTED THEM DONE NOW I WOULD HAVE TO PAY OUT MY POCKET. THE AIR BAG LIGHT IS ON, I AM AFRAID OF BEING INJURED SERIOUSLY OR KILLED. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS IT'S THEY CAN DO ABOUT THE ISSUE BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS ONE WHICH WAS NOT TAGGED AS NEEDING ATTENTION, THAT'S MIGHTY NICE THAT MIKE HAGERTY OF ORLAND PARK FEELS THAT WAY. WHAT I WANT KNOW IS DOES THE NHTSA FEEL THAT CAR MANUFACTURE ARE SO HONEST THAT IF A TAX PAYING AMERICAN CITIZEN SHOULD BASE ON THE WORD OF A GLOBAL MANUFACTURE WHO ALREADY HAS BEEN CAUGHT USING DEFECTIVE PARTS. I RECEIVED SOMETHING ABOUT A RECALL, I EXPECT THAT THE NHTSA HAS ENOUGH EXPERIENCE AS TO CORRECT THE MANUFACTURE TO REPAIR A CLEARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION IN WHICH AND OTHERS MAY PERISH FROM AN UNFORESEEN EXPLOSIVE STEERING DEFAULT THAT THE MANUFACTURE AND TAKATA ARE MAKING EVERY EFFORT TO AVOID ANY RESPONSIBILITY/LIABILITY BY SIMPLY DENYING A FAULTY BAG WAS PLACED IN THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE. I HAVE ALWAYS LOOK UPON EVERY INDIVIDUAL AS AN EQUAL, I WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF WHOM EVER PROCESSES THIS COMPLAINT. I DO NOT WANT TO DIE IN A CAR THAT I PAID FOR ACCORDING TO THE CONTRACT THAT I SIGNED, CAN VOLLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA AND IT PARENT COMPANY DO THE SAME. I PRAY YOUR AGENCY WILL REPRESENT ME.

I BELIEVE I SHOULD HAVE THIS RECALL ISSUE REPAIRED AGAIN BECAUSE IT SHOULD NOT HAVE ONLY LASTED 2 MONTHS AND NEEDING THE FUEL PUMP MODULE TO BE REPLACED/REPAIRED AGAIN BUT PROBLEM IS WORSE THE SECOND TIME AROUND. I recently purchased a used VW Passat with only 19k miles on it. However, I noticed that the engine consumed 2 quarts of full synthetic oil in just 4900 miles. When I approached the dealer about this issue, they told me that it was normal for this engine and that I should consider myself lucky that it wasn't worse. Unfortunately, they were not able to offer any help. As a result, I decided to call the 800 VW number in March of 2010. The VW staff was very friendly and helpful, and they suggested that I go back to the dealer, have them change the oil, and return within the 6k oil change interval. At that time, the dealer would weigh the oil and determine if I was within VW's standard. Although this was at my own cost, I appreciated the suggestion and felt that it was a fair solution.

The car is undeniably beautiful and has many appealing features. However, it is concerning that a new car with only 28k miles burns an excessive amount of oil. Despite this being a common issue, VW has not taken any action to address it. It is not acceptable for a car to burn almost 1 qt of oil per 1,000 miles, as VW claims is normal. A resolution to this issue must be found.

We purchased this car second-hand and it appeared to be a great deal. We currently own four other cars, including two Toyota vans with 190,000 and 214,000 miles respectively, as well as an older Subaru. Unfortunately, the VW has proven to be unreliable and has broken down almost every time we have driven it more than 20 miles away. We have had to replace the injectors, fuel rail, and more due to fuel problems and carbon build-up. Overall, it has been a frustrating experience with this car.

I've always been interested in Passats, having heard so much about their value. Unfortunately, I found that the dealership was quite expensive when it came to repairs. Although things started out well, I soon had to deal with a slipping transmission and an oil leak from a gasket. During my first maintenance check, I discovered that the air filter was missing. While these issues are usually corrected in earlier models, I was disappointed to find that I had to pay for expensive repairs that weren't covered under warranty. On one occasion, the car sat at the airport for a week and the battery ran down, but this was likely due to the cold weather. Unfortunately, the doors wouldn't even unlock with the fob.

What a fantastic car for its size! I took it on a day trip along winding state highways and it performed excellently. The power and handling are superb. After test driving many higher priced, less optioned cars, the VW was an easy choice. I just hope that past reliability issues are non-existent. It's a shame that VW is discontinuing the manual transmission after the '08 model, as this might be the best manual transmission VW has produced. So far, gas mileage has been great, averaging between 28-30 mpg for combined driving.

I've been driving my Passat since January and my wife and I have already put almost 13,000 miles on it. We've taken it on some long trips to Denver, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Duluth, Davenport, and Milwaukee. Lately, we've been getting about 32 mpg on the highway at 70 mph, and even up to 34.4 mpg. For a car of its size, the turbo provides plenty of power and the fuel economy is much better than my previous Taurus, which had the same 200 hp. I haven't had any reliability issues so far, so I can't really say anything about that. The only downside is that if I do solely city driving, I get about 16 mpg, but if I do a combination of city and highway driving, I can get up to 26.5 mpg, which is still much better than the 19 mpg I got with my previous Taurus.

"CHAMPAGNE TASTE ON A BEER BUDGET" probably covers everything that you need to know about the new Passat, and for all you non-drinkers, you just plug in your cool key and drive. The value to cost ratio is excellent. I tend not to keep cars for over 3-4 years, so as for reliability, the Passat will probably work just fine or will be covered under warranty. On the other hand, my wife has the C. Beetle and she loves it.

I recently purchased an 08 Passat turbo wagon instead of a Subaru Outback. I had previously owned an 02 wagon and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, on the day after purchasing the car, I had to return it to the dealership due to a faulty steering sensor mechanism. Although the warning lights were on when I left the dealership, I was told that it was due to low voltage and that they would turn off, but they didn't. The dealership deemed the car unsafe to drive, and I was provided with a rental car for 6 days while the part was replaced. Although I have had the car back for only 9 days, I am back at the shop because the malfunction indicator light is on. If you are considering purchasing a Passat, I would recommend visiting your nearest Subaru dealer instead.
