2017 Volkswagen Passat problems
The Volkswagen Passat is a nameplate of large family cars (D-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen since 1973. It has been marketed variously as the Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat, with varying body styles such as saloon, estate, and hatchback.
A "four-door coupé" variant of the Passat with a lower roof was released in the North American market in 2008 as the Passat CC, which was then renamed to Volkswagen CC. The CC was succeeded by the Arteon in 2017.
In January 2011, Volkswagen introduced a separate Passat model line, internally designated "Volkswagen New Midsize Sedan" or NMS, that was manufactured in the US at the Chattanooga assembly plant and in China at Nanjing by SAIC-Volkswagen. Developed to increase Volkswagen sales in North America, the Passat NMS is larger and cost less to produce. sold in the North America, South Korea, China, and Middle East. The separate B8 Passat model entered production in Europe in 2014, based on the MQB platform.
In 2019, the Passat NMS program was split into two as the North American one continued being produced on an older platform while the Chinese Passat moved on to the MQB platform, which resulted in Volkswagen marketed three models under the Passat nameplate globally at that time. The North American Passat was discontinued after the 2022 model year.
Volkswagen ended the production of the saloon Passat for the European market in 2022. The B9 Passat, released in 2023, is only available in an estate body style. The Passat continues to be available as a saloon in China.

AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
- VIN: 1VWBT7A36HC
- Components: AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Clock spring on vehicle has failed. This is a known issue with many VW vehicles, but I have been told my vehicle is not on the extended warranty program. 2017 VW Passat - approximately 150,000 miles. This eliminates all steering wheel controls, horn, cruise control, and air bags.
POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

- VIN: 1VWBT7A32HC
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: On 6 separate occasions while operating my vehicle it randomly stops running. The first two were at 40 mph and I was told it was a battery issue. It happened twice less than 4 days after the battery was replaced, once at 25 mph and once at 15 mph. I then had the fuel pump replaced. Less than 4 days later it happened twice again. Once at 10 mph and another time at 45 mph.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-21
- VIN: 1VWGT7A36HC
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
- Summary: Our 2017 VW Passat had the clockspring replaced last year under warranty number [XXX] at Barnes Crossing Volkswagen in Tupelo, MS. The airbag stopped working and safety features such as adaptive cruise control were also not available. Not realizing the airbag would NOT deploy in the event of an accident, Volkswagen asked us to drive an hour to have it repaired which was considerably dangerous. As of today the clockspring they replaced once again failed with the same associated problems. I am submitting a report due to how dangerous this problem is considering they supposedly fixed the issue however it seems multiple people have reported the issue coming back. The fact the airbag could stop working at anytime due to a defective clockspring is very troublesome and make me worry in the event of an accident if the clockspring will fail thus not allowing the airbag to deploy. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-21
- VIN: 1VWGT7A38HC
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
- Summary: Clock spring has failed 5 times within a year. The first clock spring replacement failed two weeks after the repair. I the. took it to a different dealership to be repaired. The second clock spring broke about 6 months later. The third clock spring broke two weeks after the repair. The fourth clock spring broke two months later and I am about to have it repaired within the next week. Due to the faulty clock spring, the driver side air bag will not deploy in the event of an accident and I have no use of the horn - both of which are necessary when living in South Florida. There are only two dealerships within reasonable driving distance to have the repair done (while the part is under warranty). It takes at least a week, if not more, to get an appointment at the dealership to ensure they have the part at the time of the repair. During which time, I have no choice but to drive the vehicle without the use of the air bag. Even though I can tell when the clock spring is likely about to break, I cannot take it to the dealership for repair until it has actually broken. This is not only extremely inconvenient, but hazardous as I’d be without safety mechanisms in the event of an accident. This should not be a reoccurring issue with the vehicle. The dealership has gone as far as contacting VW support to ensure the correct part is replaced and repaired properly, yet it continues to happen. It is unrelated to my driving or the way the part has been repaired. It is simply faulty parts being supplied.
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-01
- VIN: 1VWGT7A3XHC

The mechanic detected the fuel odor coming from the carbon filter and advised the contact to have the vehicle diagnosed by a dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V110000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was 41,751.

I'm glad you're interested in the 2017 Passat! It's worth noting that the TDI engine is no longer available, but the 1.8T is still a reliable option that provides a smooth and efficient drive. Additionally, the app connect software is a great feature. You can purchase one for a great price of 22k. Thank you for considering the Passat!

I've had SUVs and trucks for most of my life, but I decided to try something different. This vehicle is perfect for those, like myself, who have a heavy foot. Let me list the main pros and cons that are based on popular preferences rather than personal preference: Pros include a gray leather interior that is easy to clean, simple and reliable tech hook up, long-lasting oil changes, quick and nimble maneuvering, a sun/moon roof, nice trunk space, amazing lighting inside and out, and heated seats that make for a quiet idle. Cons include loud driving no matter what tires are used, FWD that causes the front tires to wear out quickly and require frequent replacements, exterior that is easily dented, not a lot of space between driver and passenger, not a big enough center console, stains that are difficult to clean on areas that aren't made of hard material, poor angle visibility options that make it hard to get side views exactly right, and mediocre gas mileage at best.
-
I'm not usually a fan of FWD disposable cars/sedans, but the Passat has won me over. It has active electronic steering that eliminates torque steer and holds the road better than my BMWs. I get 40 mpg on the highway and an overall 34 mpg on long trips, even with in-city driving. It's roomy, comfortable, and has just the right amount of tech, including blind spot monitoring and LED lights. I'm not sure how much I like the active braking, but it's likely to come in handy. It even triggered on a pothole going 30 mph, but no harm was done. I would highly recommend considering this car, no matter what vehicle you have in mind. It's a better car than SUVs, with fold-down seats that give as much room as a small SUV, but it handles like a sports car. Just open your mind away from Japanese and Korean disposable refrigerators and give it a look. This car would have fit in BMW's lineup in the 90s and early 2000s. Current BMWs are just too fragile. I upgraded from a VW to an Audi over automated gizmos and size, but the Passat is truly a hell of a car.
-
The car is great overall, receiving a 5-star rating. However, it could benefit from more USB ports. One thing to note is that the traction control cannot be turned off, which may be inconvenient for some drivers. I had an issue with the dashboard once, but it was quickly resolved by the dealership. The car also has a very sensitive brake assist, which is something to keep in mind. Overall, I would still recommend this car.

The Passat is a fantastic car that always turns heads. I wish VW would create its own trim with better specs and equipment, like they did for the 2017 model. When I was shopping for a large sedan, the Passat offered me the perfect amount of space for my son's car seat, great looks, fuel economy, and beautiful interiors. Some people may say that the Passat is an old guy's car, but I'm almost 30 and I love the elegant/sporty look of the 2017 Passat. I especially love the unique Urano Gray color of my Passat. VW did a great job on that. If they made this Passat a 2.0 and gave it its own spotlight as the 2018 Passat GT, without the ugly two-tone seats, enhanced engine, PUSH button start, keyless entry/remote start, fender audio system (preferably 1000 watts), and basically the rest of the SEL Premium features, it would be the perfect Passat. This car is also great on gas and accelerates super well. On a full tank, the car displays 475 miles and actually consumes 420 miles (city/highway).

I recently purchased my second Passat, after having the 2014 model with the 2.5, 5 cylinder engine. That car sold me on Volkswagen, as I hadn't owned one since my early days with several of the Legacy VW bugs. The ride was smooth and quiet, with minimal problems. (I did have to replace the battery on my own dime, and there was an electronic steering issue which they corrected at no cost.) When my lease ended, I considered the Tiquan, but found it was only half the size of my Passat, so I opted to go for another Passat. While the Wolfsberg version was no longer available, I was directed to an R-Line version. Although it's a beautiful car on the outside, I have to admit that I've been a bit disappointed with it. The fit is okay at best, and not nearly as good as my previous Passat. The handling is also a bit of a let-down, as it doesn't handle corners as well as my 2014 model did. However, the room for passengers is excellent, and the climate control is very good for the front passenger and driver. The entertainment system is another area of concern, as it uses Android Auto and has been nothing but a pain. Although I had it working recently, it has since died again. The display is quite small, and the controls on the steering wheel are useless in conjunction with the working of the phone, so it's really just there for looks. The 1.8 engine is a bit underpowered for a car of this size, and even with the turbo, it's just not enough power for city driving. However, it's great on the road, and I'm able to get 25 MPG on the open road. While I've had some issues with my dealer, I'm still happy with my purchase overall and would consider Volkswagen again in the future.

I purchased a brand new 2017 R-Line Passat almost 4 years ago and have been driving it ever since. In my opinion, there are both pros and cons to this car. Overall, I like the car, but my husband is considering trading in his 2013 SE Passat for a pickup truck. I am thinking about keeping his car and letting him trade in my R-Line because I think his Passat drives better. His V6 is much quicker than the 4-cylinder that comes in my model. His Passat also has a tighter steering column which I like, and overall, it provides a smoother ride because it doesn't have the lower profile tires that mine has. The pros of this car include its beautiful and sporty look, tons of interior and trunk space, back-up camera, heated seats and mirrors which all come standard, great gas mileage, and all the interior features feel ergonomically correct. You really won't find anything else like it for the price. However, there are some cons to consider. The power is weaker compared to the V6 (it's fine for highway driving but doesn't have great pick-up from the start). There are no vents in the backseat which other models do have (this bothers me because of small children riding in the back on very hot or cold days). The tires are not great (the 19” wheels look really good but the low profile tires make the ride a bit noisy and not very smooth, and they are more likely to get nails and things stuck in them. I’ve gotten 2 nails stuck in them at different times and also had a tire blowout when I hit a small pothole during winter. Due to their size, the tires can be a little harder to find and they cost more to replace. They also recommend replacing the tires in multiples which ends up being costly). I would absolutely buy another VW, but I don't think I'd buy another R-Line model.
