2003 Volkswagen Passat problems
The Volkswagen Passat is a nameplate of large family cars (D-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen since 1973. It has been marketed variously as the Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat, with varying body styles such as saloon, estate, and hatchback.
A "four-door coupé" variant of the Passat with a lower roof was released in the North American market in 2008 as the Passat CC, which was then renamed to Volkswagen CC. The CC was succeeded by the Arteon in 2017.
In January 2011, Volkswagen introduced a separate Passat model line, internally designated "Volkswagen New Midsize Sedan" or NMS, that was manufactured in the US at the Chattanooga assembly plant and in China at Nanjing by SAIC-Volkswagen. Developed to increase Volkswagen sales in North America, the Passat NMS is larger and cost less to produce. sold in the North America, South Korea, China, and Middle East. The separate B8 Passat model entered production in Europe in 2014, based on the MQB platform.
In 2019, the Passat NMS program was split into two as the North American one continued being produced on an older platform while the Chinese Passat moved on to the MQB platform, which resulted in Volkswagen marketed three models under the Passat nameplate globally at that time. The North American Passat was discontinued after the 2022 model year.
Volkswagen ended the production of the saloon Passat for the European market in 2022. The B9 Passat, released in 2023, is only available in an estate body style. The Passat continues to be available as a saloon in China.

MOST RECENT ISSUES IN LAST 1.5YRS HAVE BEEN FUEL PUMP WENT OUT AND I PAID TO REPLACE (DEALER SCAMMED US BY THROWING OUT DEAD BRAND NEW AAA STAMPED AND WARRANTED BATTERY, THEY SD WE NEEDED NEW ONE AND OLD ONE ALREADY PICKED UP FROM DEALER TO EXPOSE OF, CHARGED $200 FOR THAT AS WELL. I PAID FOR THE ABS LIGHT REPAIR WHICH I HAVE PAID AND DIAGNOSED NUMEROUS TIMES FOR LAST 10YRS TO FIX AND FINALLY JUST PAID THE OVER $1000. TO GET IT FIXED FOR SAFETY REASONS. 9 MONTHS AGO REAR BRAKE LIGHTS WOULD COME ON RANDOMLY WHEN PARKED AND LOCKED KILLING THE BATTERY. I WOULD DRIVE IT TO CHARGE IT UP BUT SINCE IT IS A CAR WE DON'T DRIVE OFTEN OR FAR, IT CONTINUED TO DO THE SAME FOR A FEW WEEKS UNTIL IT DAWNED ON ME THAT THE SEAT WARMER ON THOSE CARS COULD LEAVE AN OPEN CURRENT, TURNED THAT OFF, GOOD FOR A FEW WEEKS, THEN FOUND OUT SAME FOR THE TRUNK LIGHT, UNPLUGGED AND CAPPED THAT AND IT IS FAR BETTER, BUT SOMETHING STILL. AFTER READING ONLINE VW PASSAT FORUMS AND RECALLS I KNOW 2 DEALERSHIPS SD THEY PERFORMED THE BRAKE LIGHT SENSOR RECALL, BUT WAS IT TRULY DONE AND CAUSING THE ISSUE...ANSWER IS NO, VW DEALERS 2X AFTER CHECKING AND BILLING VW FOR THE REPAIR FALSIFIED DOING THE RECALL. THE TANK RUNS ABOUT $922 AND IT TAKES UP TO 11 HOURS LABOR TIME. I STARTED A CHAT WITH A VWOA REP TO LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE. SHE SAID THERE ARE NO CURRENT RECALLS OR CAMPAIGNS ON MY VEHICLE AT THIS TIME. SHE ALSO STATED THAT MY CAR'S 26E5/R5 RECALL, IT COVERS ALL 1999-2005 PASSAT AND PASSAT WAGON (5TH GEN) EQUIPPED WITH GAS ENGINES. INSTALL UNDERBODY HEAT SHIELD(S): INSPECT/REPLACE FUEL LINE, FUEL TANK: UPDATE SOFTWARE, IF NECESSARY, HAD BEEN PERFORMED ON 03/12/09 BUT HAS NO SERVICE RECORD TO TELL ME WHAT WAS DONE. IT MAY NOT HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN REPLACED. SHE ALSO SAID VWOA WILL NOT FIX NOR HELP ME FIX IT. I FEEL THAT IF A RECALL FOR AS HUGE SAFETY ISSUE THAT THIS IS, SHOULD NOT FAIL IN THE SAME MANOR AS THE ORIGINAL PART DID. THAT TELLS ME THEY JUST REPLACED IT WITH THE SAME PROBLEM PART IN HOPES THAT THE CAR WOULDN'T BE IN USE BY THE TIME IT FAILS AGAIN. I AM INCLUDING A FEW PICS FOR EVIDENCE. THE EXAMPLE TANK PIC HAS BEEN OUTLINED WHERE THE FUEL LEAK IS ON MY CAR. THANK YOU, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

2003 Passat GLX is a fully loaded sedan- two 8 way power seats with memory, rain sensing wipers, folding mirrors, smooth V6 engine and drive train, and other features only available on high end vehicles. Most all the options still work. Only bothersome problem has been the alloy rims pit from the winter salt and develop slow leaks. Recently repaired rims since winter is over- should hold till next year. Paint and body has held up well for Ohio winter roads. This car still turns heads- people don't believe it is 13 years old.

Your 2003 Volkswagen Passat GLX has great pickup and a smooth ride. Although you have had some issues with the front and rear ashtrays, overall you still love the car. The interior is awesome, especially the heated leather seats, and it is very roomy, even for five adults. Additionally, it has great trunk space. You have put about 15,000 miles on it with few problems. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Your 2003 GLX 4-motion Volkswagen sounds like a great car! It's unfortunate that you had some trouble with the dealership in Salt Lake City, Utah, but it's great that you found an independent repair shop that you trust. It's always important to have a reliable place to take your car. Thanks for sharing your experience!

This is the second 2003 Passat we've owned. Although my niece had a 2003 and had to replace the motor and turbo charger, we've had a different experience. We did have some issues with the engine light during the first two years of owning our first Passat, but we were able to trade it in for a 2003 with lower mileage and an extended warranty. While we have had some issues with the second car, including the sunroof opening on its own and the rear windows falling out of the tracks, we have found the car to be reliable overall. It is currently in the shop for its second new turbo booster, but we remain optimistic. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I've only had my Passat for a month, so I can't comment on its reliability yet. However, I must say that this car has everything I could ask for: power, style, innovative features, and comfort. I love the exhaust resonance when I start it up, and the fact that you can open and close all windows with the key in the door. The rain sensing wipers, headlight sprayers, fastened down floormats, and tiptronic are also great features. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone.

When I bought my first Volkswagen in 2003, I was excited to try something new. Unfortunately, my experience with this car has not been great and I have had a lot of issues with it. The starter went out in the first month and I was without a car for a few days. I have had to bring the car to the dealership multiple times for routine service and have unfortunately never left without spending over $1000. There have also been numerous recalls, including one for the heated seats which caused my pants to catch fire before the recall. Recently, I had to replace an axle and now I am being told that I may need a new transmission, even though I haven't even hit 80,000 miles yet. On top of that, my back doors do not unlock, the handle came off the glovebox, the alarm no longer sounds when I leave the lights on, and the sunroof gets stuck open. Despite all of these issues, I am hopeful that I can find a solution and continue to enjoy driving my car.

I bought this car used in March 2008 with 70k miles on it. Unfortunately, within the first month, I had to take it back to the VW dealer because water had somehow found its way into the cabin and destroyed the CCM, which cost $1200 to fix. Two months later, the ignition coils went bad and caused the car to misfire, which was a $350 fix. Four months after that, I pulled away from a stop light and smelled coolant while seeing smoke coming from the engine compartment. When I opened the hood, I saw coolant squirting everywhere. I had to tow it to the VW dealer and pay $1300 for a clamp. Really, VW? The next day, the same thing happened again. Within the four years that I've owned this car, I've probably spent more on repairs than it's worth. I strongly advise against buying this car unless you enjoy wasting money.

This car has proven to be unreliable and problematic after just three years.

I purchased this car brand new from the lot, but unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the brakes. When I brought it up with the dealer, they told me that it was normal for new cars to have squeaky brakes. However, when I took it to an independent mechanic at 8k miles, they found that my brakes were completely rusted and failed. The mechanic advised me to stop driving the car immediately, so I had it towed back to the dealer. Although the dealer initially told me that my brakes were fine, I later found out that they were not. Unfortunately, my brake warranty had already expired by the time I discovered this issue. The dealer tried to blame it on my location near the ocean, but I believe that there were other factors at play. Overall, I had a few other issues with the car, but I am hopeful that they will be resolved soon.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my beloved 2003 VW Passat. It has been with me for an impressive 149,500 miles and I must say, it has been a fun ride! However, I must admit that it has required quite a bit of maintenance and repairs over the years. I've had to replace the radio, brake light switch, seat heaters, airbag light, CV boots, and oil cooler. The check engine light has also been a frequent visitor. On top of that, the cost of wipers and oil changes can be quite steep, and the VW dealerships can be a bit overwhelming with their long list of suggested repairs. If you're considering a VW, I would suggest doing your research and weighing the pros and cons before making a decision. Thank you for taking the time to read my experience!
