1998 Volkswagen Passat problems

The Volkswagen Passat is a nameplate of large family cars (D-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen since 1973. It has been marketed variously as the Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat, with varying body styles such as saloon, estate, and hatchback.

A "four-door coupé" variant of the Passat with a lower roof was released in the North American market in 2008 as the Passat CC, which was then renamed to Volkswagen CC. The CC was succeeded by the Arteon in 2017.

In January 2011, Volkswagen introduced a separate Passat model line, internally designated "Volkswagen New Midsize Sedan" or NMS, that was manufactured in the US at the Chattanooga assembly plant and in China at Nanjing by SAIC-Volkswagen. Developed to increase Volkswagen sales in North America, the Passat NMS is larger and cost less to produce. sold in the North America, South Korea, China, and Middle East. The separate B8 Passat model entered production in Europe in 2014, based on the MQB platform.

In 2019, the Passat NMS program was split into two as the North American one continued being produced on an older platform while the Chinese Passat moved on to the MQB platform, which resulted in Volkswagen marketed three models under the Passat nameplate globally at that time. The North American Passat was discontinued after the 2022 model year.

Volkswagen ended the production of the saloon Passat for the European market in 2022. The B9 Passat, released in 2023, is only available in an estate body style. The Passat continues to be available as a saloon in China.

  • VIN: WVWMA63B7WE
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS ON MY 1998 VW PASSAT ARE DEFECTIVE AND DANGEROUS ACCORDING TO MY MECHANIC. VW REFUSES TO REPLACE THEM EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THESE PARTS. THE REASONING IS THAT: - I BROUGHT MY CAR IN FOR THE RECALL AT THEIR DEALER IN 2005 AND AT THE TIME THE PARTS SEEMED OK. - AT THIS TIME, THEIR DEALER HAS REINSPECTED THE CAR. THE VW DEALER THINKS THAT BOTH LOWER FRONT CONTROL ARMS ON THE CAR NEED REPLACEMENT. HOWEVER THE PARTS ARE NOT ABOUT TO FAIL AND THE CAR IS STILL DRIVABLE AND THUS VW WILL NOT PAY FOR THEIR REPLACEMENT. MY MECHANIC STATES THAT THE CAR NEED TO BE REPLACED AND THE CAR IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE IN THIS CONDITION. PLEASE ADVISE WHETHER VW IS RESPONSIBLE UNDER THE "REVISED-VM (40G3) - DECEMBER 2004" RECALL CAMPAIGN TO FIX THESE. THANKS *TR

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-05-01
  • VIN: WVWPD63B8WE
  • Components: ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
  • Summary: MY 1998 VW PASSAT GLX BEGAN EXHIBITING A FLASHING/BEEPING RED LIGHT TO INDICATE A FAILURE IN THE ABS SYSTEM. UPON FURTHER RESEARCH WITH OTHER OWNERS OF THIS VEHICLE, IT HAS COME TO MY ATTENTION THAT THIS FAILURE IS FAIRLY COMMON ON 1998-2001 PASSATS, BUT NO ACTION HAS EVER BEEN TAKEN BY THE MANUFACTURER. I HAD THE ABS MODULE REBUILT AND DID THE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION WORK MYSELF; THE RESULT WAS $220 OUT OF POCKET. HOWEVER, MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE SOUGHT DEALERSHIP SERVICE WORK FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM HAVE SPENT WELL IN EXCESS OF $1,000. GIVEN THE APPARENT FAILURE RATE OF THIS MODULE AND THE FACT THAT IT IS A CORE SAFETY FEATURE OF THE CAR, IT IS MY OPINION THAT IT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR RECALL (INCLUDING COMPENSATION FOR THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY MADE THE REPAIR). THANK YOU. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Summary: MY ABS LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY COMES ON FOLLOWED BY THE BRAKE LIGHT FLASHING> UPON RESEARCHING THIS ON SEVERAL VARIOUS FORUMS ON THE NET. THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMONLY DEFECTIVE PART ON SEVERAL MODEL YEARS FROM 98-01. THE OLDEST POSTING I FOUND WAS DONE IN 2000 AND THE VEHICLE WAS A 99. FROM RESEARCHING THIS IT APPEARS EVEN VW DEALERS ARE UNABLE TO GET CORRECT PROBLEM CODES ON THIS ISSUE. I SAW POSTINGS FROM MANY OWNERS STATING THEY WERE TOLD EVERYTHING FROM ABS MODULES NEEDING REPLACED TO INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS TO WIRING ISSUES. IT APPEARS NO ONE IS ABSOLUTELY SURE WHAT THE ISSUE IS AS SOME OWNERS AFTER THE DEALER RECOMMEND REPLACEMENTS DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE. IN THE SHORT TIME I LOOKED INTO THIS I FEEL THAT VW SHOULD BE WELL AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND HAVE TAKEN STEPS TO RESOLVE IT. I SAW LITERALLY YEARS WORTH OF POSTINGS A ON THIS ISSUE ON BENTLEY PUBLISHERS WEBSITE. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW MANY THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE HAD TO PAY FOR THINGS THAT DID NOT DO ANY RESEARCH ON IT. *TR

  • Summary: STEERING: CONTROL ARMS. THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED USED WITH APPROX 34K MILES. SERVICE HAS BEEN MAINTAINED BY OWNER AND/OR INDEPENDENT REPAIR. AT APPROXIMATELY 50K OWNER WAS NOTIFIED BY INDEPENDENT REPAIR SERVICE THAT BOTH UPPER CONTROL ARMS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. OWNER CHOSE NOT TO DO THE REPAIR AT THAT TIME. DURING 2005 OWNER RECEIVED A LETTER FROM VOLKSWAGEN ABOUT A RECALL ON THE AFFECTED PART(S). TWO LOCAL VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIPS ACKNOWLEDGED THE PART WAS DEFECTIVE BUT DENIED TO DO THE WORK UNDER THE RECALL NOTIFICATION. BOTH GAVE JUSTIFICATION THAT BECAUSE THE OWNER COULD NOT DOCUMENT SERVICE CHECKS AT THE RECOMMENDED FACTORY INTERVALS THE VOLKSWAGEN COMPANY WOULD NOT PAY FOR PARTS OR SERVICE. OWNER CALLED THE VOLKSWAGEN COMPANY DIRECTLY AND A CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE VERIFIED THE POLICY. OWNER HAS SINCE REPLACED ONE CONTROL ART, HOWEVER THE OTHER SIDE ALSO NEEDS REPAIR. *TR

Negative 1998 Volkswagen Passat car reviews

  1. Mohamed Grant 2024-11-18

I purchased a brand new 1998 with manual xmsn and have driven it for 72K miles. Although I have experienced some mechanical problems, I still love the look and ride of the car, especially considering the price. The mechanical issues I have encountered include the drivers power windows breaking twice (covered under warranty), new brakes and rotors at 20K, issues with the ignition switch and electronic ignition and plugs, the rear spoiler coming loose twice (covered under warranty), the radiator light coming on when the engine was cold, and the cruise control still not working. However, thanks to the 100K/10 yr factory warranty, the timing belt tensioner that came loose and ruined the engine at 62K miles was replaced for free and the engine now runs great! Additionally, I have kept up with normal maintenance items.

  2. Ignatius Klein 2024-10-20

Although this car has had its fair share of issues, I am confident in its ability to perform well. Upon picking it up from the dealer, I noticed that the cruise control was not functioning properly. However, with the help of the extended warranty, which has paid out over $5000.00, all of the issues have been resolved. I am now able to fully enjoy my car without any stress or aggravation.

  3. Weston Dickens 2024-10-13

The 1998 Volkswagen Passat GLS V6 Sedan is definitely a fun car to drive, but it does require some serious maintenance. You might even get to know your VW customer service representative by their first name! It seems to get about 20 miles per gallon, which is pretty good. However, it's worth noting that no one other than a VW service center wants to touch this car for repairs or maintenance. Despite the reliability issues, I must say that it handles like no other car I've driven. That being said, I'm not sure if I would buy another VW in the future.

  4. Milton Toy 2024-08-29

I bought this car in November 2002 for my son. While I was impressed with its style and ride, I had some issues with the mechanical and body parts. Unfortunately, within weeks, the parking light assembly fell out. Then, after only 62,000 miles and within 6 months, the timing belt tensioner failed and smashed the valves, requiring a new cylinder head. The total cost was nearly $4000. After researching, I found out that the tensioner problem is a manufacturer design flaw, but VW of America wouldn't admit it or help at all. As a result, we had to sell the car at a major loss and wouldn't consider owning another VW under any circumstances.

  5. Nolan McCullough 2024-08-01

This car experienced a timing belt failure at 70,000 miles, and unfortunately, several other components have also failed. The repairs have amounted to $10,000. It is clear that the service provided by VW has been subpar.

Positive 1998 Volkswagen Passat car reviews

  1. Julien Bernhard 2024-11-01

Without a doubt, this is the best car I have ever owned, even when compared to more expensive brands. The build quality is fantastic and the ergonomics are great. While the interior design may be a bit spartan, the quality and feel of the controls are unbeatable. Even my wife, who owns a Saab 9-3, agrees that the Passat is a far superior car. It has proven to be very reliable, with no major part failures - just keep changing the oil. This car is all about quality.

  2. Dario Bernhard 2024-10-16

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my used car that I purchased from the dealer back in 1999. At the time of purchase, it only had 6,000 miles on it. Since then, I've had very little maintenance costs and only had to replace the brake pads last year. I did purchase a VW extended warranty which helped with some weird problems with the fuel gauge, which had to be replaced twice, the trunk light switch, and the mass fuel sensor. Despite these minor issues, the car is so much fun to drive that I can overlook the expenses. By the way, if you think VWs are expensive to maintain, try SAABs! Take care and have a great day!

  3. Frederick Bernier 2024-09-18

The car has been great with one exception. Unfortunately, the sunroof stopped working at about 42,000 miles and 3.5 years. The estimated cost to repair is $1,700, which seems excessive. Despite this, VW was unwilling to offer any assistance. It's frustrating to deal with such an issue, especially for a part that is used so infrequently. On the bright side, the car gets great gas mileage, achieving 30+ on the highway.

  4. Kelton Padberg 2024-08-20

I have never owned a VW before, but I'm so glad I gave this one a chance! The car is beautiful, with a European feel and an American price tag. My only complaint is that it feels more like a family sedan, even though it looks like it should be a race car. Boy, do I wish I had a V6 under this hood!

  5. Alejandrin Terry 2024-07-29

Nice car! I really love the interior. The 1.8 Turbo engine is great for freeway driving and higher speeds, although it may not be as suitable for city driving. Unfortunately, we have encountered a few issues such as two cloth trim pieces that have come unglued and need to be fixed, a broken tiptronics that requires repair, a window that won't roll down and needs fixing for the second time, and an exterior trim piece that caught on a neighbor's door and is now loose and needs to be fixed. Additionally, the driver's side door lock free spins, so I can no longer close my windows with the key. I hope we can get these issues resolved soon!
