2014 Volkswagen Passat problems
The Volkswagen Passat is a nameplate of large family cars (D-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen since 1973. It has been marketed variously as the Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat, with varying body styles such as saloon, estate, and hatchback.
A "four-door coupé" variant of the Passat with a lower roof was released in the North American market in 2008 as the Passat CC, which was then renamed to Volkswagen CC. The CC was succeeded by the Arteon in 2017.
In January 2011, Volkswagen introduced a separate Passat model line, internally designated "Volkswagen New Midsize Sedan" or NMS, that was manufactured in the US at the Chattanooga assembly plant and in China at Nanjing by SAIC-Volkswagen. Developed to increase Volkswagen sales in North America, the Passat NMS is larger and cost less to produce. sold in the North America, South Korea, China, and Middle East. The separate B8 Passat model entered production in Europe in 2014, based on the MQB platform.
In 2019, the Passat NMS program was split into two as the North American one continued being produced on an older platform while the Chinese Passat moved on to the MQB platform, which resulted in Volkswagen marketed three models under the Passat nameplate globally at that time. The North American Passat was discontinued after the 2022 model year.
Volkswagen ended the production of the saloon Passat for the European market in 2022. The B9 Passat, released in 2023, is only available in an estate body style. The Passat continues to be available as a saloon in China.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-12
- VIN: 1VWAP7A31EC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: My clockspring is broken. I called the dealership to see if the Warranty was done or if there was a recall, they said it was done. I don’t understand how it could have possibly been done when clockspring are not commonly broken. I am very upset I will be having to pay out of pocket for this.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-27
- VIN: 1VWAP7A33EC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Driver side headlight showing as out, but not fixable by replacing bulb; wiring issue.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-30
- VIN: 1VWBS7A30EC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Manager Fabio at the pompano Volkswagen service indicated over the phone and in email that the vehicle is safe to drive however on the Volkswagen webpage it indicated it’s not safe to drive. I have not had the recall repair performed cause the same local vw refuses to provide a loaner for the time being repaired. This dealership poses a serious risk for drivers and consumers cause they are misinforming the public. I contacted Volkswagen care and spoke to Lisa which she was pretty incompetent to resolve the issue.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-29
- VIN: 1VWBS7A30EC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I have been trying to fix my car from the recalls two of them that they have currently for my car for which I need a temporary card while the repairs are being completed and Volkswagen in Pompano with the manager, Fabio have refused to assist me with this issue The recall is none of my issues is there company issues? They should be responsible for it and provide a temporary car while the car is being in service for those recalls. In this way, Volkswagen has refused to repair those service calls
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-21
- VIN: 1VWAP7A30EC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The airbag light came on and shortly thereafter the steering wheel buttons stop working, the steering was stiff and harder to turn and ultimately the horn stop working. I feel driving a vehicle with a broken clock spring is extremely dangerous and is a safety issue.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-02
- VIN: 1VWAT7A38EC
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: Rear control arm rusted through, ejecting the spring and collapsing the suspension.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-22
- VIN: 1VWCN7A38EC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Emissions system on engine has premature failures following the TDI scandal modifications, causing the coolant system to fail prematurely. Have had 2 heater cores clogged in the past 3 years, resulting in EGR failures, impacting emissions and potential engine overheats.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
- VIN: 1VWAH7A31EC
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: 215/60/r16- replaced 6 tires all under 2500 miles of use. Have all receipts. The tires were always losing air even with being Brandy new, would slide with brand new tread and it did not have to be raining. I spent a lot of money on the tires to only go with a different brand finally after going to have to replace 4 more tires under the 2500 mark, yes I had the warranty for free replacement. But discount tires deemed the Sentury touring tires a road hazard. I also have pictures of how they looked even with air in them. I purchased them from a discount tire store as well. They have all my documents on file to prove my statement. Sentury company needs to investigated on their tire quality as the tires could have caused blow outs and killed my family or myself or even another person. As you can see in the picture yes they are dirty, but plenty of tread. These tires are supposed to be reliable for 40k miles. These were either the second or 3rd replacement for this brand depending on what part of the car, either front or back. And again not even 2500 miles did they last.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-01
- VIN: 1VWAT7A37EC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My heater core for this vehicle is malfunctioning. This is making my heat not work, which in the middle of the winter can be problematic to my health and the health of my passengers. VW issued a recall on the diesel version of my car, which is gas, but did not extend to the gas version.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-19
- VIN: 1VWAT7A3XEC
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: The component that failed is in the official dealer report. I am not an expert however definitely an issue with electrical, engine, steering and acceleration meter. The car shakes/jolts aggressively. Once the shaking of the vehicle begins it accelerates with the breaks being pressed in under a red light and also under parked mode. In the red light case the vehicle then turns off the steering wheel freezes and all power comes off. The shaking/jolting takes place as I am driving as well. Which I then have to pull to the right to ensure my safety and others. This is major safety concern as it accelerates /jolts forward which can cause harm to pedestrians crossing the street, having me enter crossing traffic causing a major accident to myself and others. I have the brakes pressed in having no control of the vehicle. The vehicle turning off as I am driving is a major safety concern as I can cause an issue specially going on higher speed like freeways. The steering wheel comes into a complete freeze once the vehicle turns off as I’m operating the vehicle which then does not allow me to control the movement of the vehicle if I want to pull to the right away from traffic to avoid collisions. Once the car looses electricity and the steering wheel freezes I have to force my car to the right or a safe space. I then have to take my car key off the ignition and then turn it back on in hopes that it does turn on. No warning lamps have turned on. My dashboard is cleared with no lights. The dealer in downtown Los Angeles was informed of this issue, inspected and the report did come back reporting manufacturing issues. My vehicle did have a steering wheel recall before which I assumed was resolved as I did previously visit their center to ensure I was safe driving and leaving the dealer I trusted that the issue was resolved by their expert and experienced personnel. I am not sure or it’s unknown if this might have anything to do with the current issue I have.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-03
- VIN: 1VWAP7A31EC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Car started to stall, the spark plugs, injectors, sensors all replaced. I go to pickup the car on three different occasions and it won't go 1/10 of a mile without stalling and refuses to start. The garage I was dealing with refuses to work on it any more. I think this seems to be a common problem with the 2014 Passats, but I don't see where anyone's has been fixed. The stalling has happened on multiple dates. Now it's at a garage and can't even get it to dealer and have already spent over 1000.00
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-04
- VIN: 1VWCN7A37EC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I'm having issues with the heat in my vehicle. There is no heat on the passenger side which also affects the visibility of seeing out the windshield because the defroster does not function properly. The original owner replaced the heater core somewhere around 40-45000 miles. I have owned 2 other vehicles of this model and had the same issue on everyone of them where the heater core was replaced.. This is more than a inconvenience it is a potential hazard not being able to see when the windshield is frosted or fogged up. It is a poor design and this needs to be addressed and investigated further. It's a bad time of year to have an equipment failure like this. There was no accident or incident but there is a potential hazard waiting to happen.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-28
- VIN: 1VWBN7A34EC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: While driving the vehicle and making a slow speed turn into a drive way, the wires in the clock spring portion of the Driver airbag were severed mechanism. This has caused the car to no longer have airbags on the Driver side of the car. Volkswagon has recalled some of the car in this model year, but they continue to say my vehicle is not affected. When this happened, I had less than 90,000 miles on the car. I am unable to fix this defect because of the cost and honestly, I shouldn't have to as Volkswagon knows it's an issue and has made recalls of their cars, but they don't include my model year. This is wrong, as the issues I am having are the EXACT SAME AS THE CURRENT RECALL. The recall needs to be expanded to more cars in the 2014 model year. There is no way debris should be able to enter the clock spring area and sever the lines with normal use. This puts my safety at risk because if I am in an accident, I do not have airbag protection. I have not taken the car to a dealer as I cannot afford to, the vehicle has not been inspected, but if that would help, I can get it inspected, and there were no lights, lamps or messages that warned of any problems with my airbag system until the wires broke.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-11
- VIN: 1VWBM7A39EC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The controls on the steering wheel have stopped working along with the air bags were disabled (the light is on). Sounds like the clock spring.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-15
- VIN: 1VWAT7A31EC
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle at night, the contact became aware that the driver’s side exterior headlamp was not functioning properly, potentially compromising nighttime visibility. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V389000 (Exterior Lighting), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 65,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-05
- VIN: 1VWCN7A34EC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: To Whom It May Concern. Good afternoon. I really need your help on this. This particular vehicle has a defective DEF emission system that renders the car inoperable when the DEF sensors start acting up. Between 2022-2023, I took this vehicle to the Volkswagen dealership on numerous times, over ten different times. This vehicle was still protected under a factory emissions DEF extended warranty. The engine mounted diesel injection pump was changed by me when the Volkswagen dealer refused to honor the defective diesel injection pump. The DEF emissions systems has had numerous issues including shutting off on the freeway due to defective DEF sensors. Between 2022-2023 I was forced to keep the vehicle on for up to 96 hours costing me considerable expenses in fuel, and abnormally high mechanical wear and tear on my vehicle because I was unable to turn the vehicle off due to a Volkswagen diesel no-restart emissions issue that can only be repaired at the Volkswagen dealership. VWOA has acted in extremely bad faith causing unnecessary hardship on their customers that erroneously purchased a Volkswagen Passat diesel with the DEF emission system. Volkswagen ripped me off by selling a defective vehicle, then refusing to honor their factory extended emissions warranty on the defective DEF systems. Please intervene. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-06
- VIN: 1VWBS7A39EC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
- Summary: The clock spring is out on the vehicle again
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-03-07
- VIN: 1VWAT7A38EC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I was turning the steering wheel in my vehicle and heard a crunching/clicking sound. After checking what the issue was, I was told that it was the clock spring which was not covered under the warranty or a recall as per the dealership. My airbag light is now on and may not be functioning properly. My horn no longer works along with any of the functions in my steering wheel such as my radio and phone connection. I was also told that the faulty clock spring could effect other electronic functions in my vehicle. There were no warning lights prior to the malfunction of the clockspring.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-14
- VIN: 1VWCN7A35EC
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I had just had the engine replaced on my 2014 Volkswagen Passat TDI 13 miles previously and on my first drive upon getting my car back I had an error code “transmission overheated” and I lost power while driving and the check engine light also illuminated. The transmission cut out almost immediately when the overheating message illuminated on the dashboard. It then illuminated a wrench where the drive indication is not the dashboard and would not allow selection of any gears. I had the transmission inspected by the dealer and they aren’t sure what happened and that it does indeed need a new transmission. The fact that I lost the ability to drive the car immediately after the light came on while driving seems dangerous to me and a transmission with 63,000 miles and 64 degrees F shouldn’t overheat. It is a DSG transmission and I have read online of several other owners experiencing similar situations of the transmission having faulty parts and overheating. I also reached out to Volkswagen of America and they said there isn’t anything they can do as the car is out of warranty (I believe the warranty for the transmission was 60,000). I had pointed out to Volkswagen that the transmission is cooled by the engine so a brand new engine 13 miles ago and then the consequent overheating and terminal failure seems rather odd to me. Had I been driving on the freeway instead of 40 mph the situation could have ended significantly different then it did.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-19
- VIN: 1VWAT7A37EC

AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-25
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1VWBS7A31EC
- Components: AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE
- Summary: In 2022 I was in an accident on the highway; a dear hit my car while I was traveling at 70 MPH. My airbags did not deploy and I ended up hitting my head on the driver side window really hard and it gave me a concussion and I injured one of the disks in my back. I almost got hit by semi trucks traveling behind me as well. Again, my airbags didn’t deploy after this and I’ve seen many recalls on the 2014 VW Passat specifically about the vehicles airbag deployment being that they’re also Takata airbags that had major recalls too. They should’ve deployed on a head on collision. My insurance didn’t total my car but I have proof that the entire frame was bent from the accident and my entire front headlight, fender and bumper are smashed in and wires for my transmission were severed. I still haven't settled this claim yet. I’m considering getting a lawyer about it.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM

- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2012-2014 Passat vehicles, equipped with diesel engines and Direct-Shift Transmissions (DSG). The vehicle's underbody heat shield may not be long enough to protect the right half-shaft grease boot from heat, potentially resulting in a grease leak.
- Consequence: If the leaking grease contacts a heated surface, such as the exhaust system and/or the diesel particulate filter (DPF), it could increase the risk of fire.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driveshaft heat shield, free of charge. The recall began on July 7, 2017. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 23W5.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 Passat vehicles equipped with TDI engines. Due to improperly assembled wire seals in a connector for an underbody sensor, water may enter and corrode the electrical connectors of the sensor, causing an electrical short.
- Consequence: An electrical short can cause the electrical connectors of the sensor to overheat, increasing the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the connector, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began in September. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 23T3.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Golf, 2007-2010 Passat sedans and wagon, 2012-2014 Passat sedan and Eos, 2009-2014 CC, 2009-2012 Audi Q5, 2010-2012 S5 Cabriolet and 2010-2012 Audi A5 Cabriolet vehicles. Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag inflators, free of charge. Volkswagen issued an interim notification to owners on April 12, 2016, and will send a second notification when parts are available. Volkswagen will notify owners again once parts are available. Volkswagen owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Audi owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Volkswagen CC, and Passat, 2010-2013 Eos, 2011-2014 Golf, GTI, Jetta, and Tiguan, and 2012-2014 Jetta Sportwagen vehicles. In the affected vehicles, debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag.
- Consequence: A loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install a protective cover over the steering wheel clock spring if the air bag light is off. If the airbag light is on and the steering wheel clock spring requires replacement, dealers will install a new steering wheel clock spring. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987.

I absolutely love my Passat! When I first saw the sports model at the dealership, I knew I had to have it. The sleek 19

Update: As of 2023, I have owned this car for 9 years and it is still running great with no major issues. It has 122000 miles on it and I love cruising in it, only speeding up when necessary to pass slow vehicles. The turbo gives it a great burst of speed. Overall, it's a great used car buy as long as it's well-maintained and driven properly. I personally bought the Wolfsburg edition and have had it for over 5 years now. It has been very reliable, with the only issue being the gas door actuator which I was able to easily fix by purchasing a replacement online for about $30 and having a mechanic install it. Other than that, I've only needed to do regular oil changes and replace the tires. The Passat is a great commuter car, perfect for cruising in the middle or slower lane on the highway. It's not meant for a lot of stop-and-go traffic at higher speeds, as this can cause transmission issues. So take it easy with this car and it will take it easy on your wallet!

When we traded in our 2011 Jetta Sportwagon, I leased this car. At first, I wasn't too keen on it until I hit the gas in the 280 horse V-6. Let me tell you, this car has some serious acceleration. Despite some torque steer and a tendency to spin the wheels if you get on it too quickly, you're going to surprise some people who thought they were going to outrun somebody's station car. And while I'm on the topic of acceleration, keep your ears open because the engine note is quite pleasant when it's hard at work. The car is also very spacious, with plenty of room for the driver and passengers. The back seat is unbelievably roomy and the trunk is cavernous. Yet the car is easy, no, fun to drive. The paddle shifters weren't something I thought I'd use and, for the most part, I don't. But when the spirit moves you, flip that shifter right and row your own: it's a gas. The sound system is better than most, although I don't get the whole

I have the TDI SE diesel 6 speed DSG automated manual transmission. The fuel economy is amazing! It gets at least 50mpg on the highway, 37mpg in the city, and 45mpg combined. Once you get used to the automated manual, it's great. The interior is spacious and the V-tex leatherette is very durable. I almost bought the SEL, but I'm not a fan of leather trimmed velour. The stereo is fantastic and the back seat and trunk are HUGE! You won't be lacking for space in this car - there's plenty of room for your feet, shoulders, head, and seat or seatback. They used to call this a

Higher repair and maintenance costs compared to Japanese cars, but it's definitely worth it. The car has plenty of power on demand and excellent gas mileage. I was able to drive from Hartford, CT to Portland, ME on just one tank of gas. The fender sound system is awesome, especially if you opt for the Sirius option. The ride is comfortable and smooth, and it handles back roads like a champ, which is great for me since I live in a rural area. I bought mine used with 63k miles on it from a one owner who had all the service records. I paid 11k out the door and couldn't be happier.

Avoid leasing VWs at all costs. The turn-in inspection process is notoriously difficult, and any issues with the vehicle will result in costly repairs. Additionally, VWs are not ideal for snowy conditions and have been known to have multiple transmission problems. While some may have had negative experiences with VW dealerships and customer service, it is important to note that every individual's experience may vary. It is recommended to thoroughly research and consider all options before making a purchasing decision.

Despite the challenges I have faced with my Passat, I remain confident in my assessment that the vehicle has a series of issues that need to be addressed by VW. Despite multiple visits to different dealerships, the root cause of the stalling issue was not identified until recently, when the engine was found to be the culprit. I have always maintained my vehicle and it is frustrating to have experienced these issues with my 2014 Passat, especially since I have had no issues with my previous VW vehicles. I believe that it is important for VW to acknowledge and address these issues with the 2014 model.

I have owned 5 VW's in the past and this is my 6th and the last! However, I have had some issues with this car. Right from the start, the back window had to be replaced because it was warped, bubbled and defective. It took over a week in the shop to fix it. Although the Fender sound system is great, the top bar under the windshield cracks and rattles, which detracts from the sound. I have had to take it in 3 times to fix that. Additionally, the suspension crashes and bangs over bumps, and I am going in for the fourth time to fix that! Moreover, the steering rack and column were defective, which resulted in 13 days in the shop! I also noticed some styrofoam foam under the front passenger seat and foam packing in the trunk hinges, which I found a bit odd. There are also numerous rattles and creaks from the interior. I am extremely disappointed with these issues. Therefore, I would advise you to stay away from this car.

Although there are some issues with the car, such as the radio/GPS system and the remote start, I believe that overall it is a good car. The navigation system can be a bit cumbersome and slow to respond at times, but once it gets going it works well. Additionally, the VW-carnet system could use some improvement. However, I still think that this car is worth considering. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Great mileage, comfortable seats, and a large trunk make this car an excellent choice for both trips and daily commutes. However, I have just had the 3rd heater core installed in 2.5 years. Unfortunately, this has led to too many repairs and recalls. Unless VW can improve their manufacturing controls, I cannot recommend it.
