The Volkswagen Passat is a nameplate of large family cars (D-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen since 1973. It has been marketed variously as the Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat, with varying body styles such as saloon, estate, and hatchback.

A "four-door coupé" variant of the Passat with a lower roof was released in the North American market in 2008 as the Passat CC, which was then renamed to Volkswagen CC. The CC was succeeded by the Arteon in 2017.

In January 2011, Volkswagen introduced a separate Passat model line, internally designated "Volkswagen New Midsize Sedan" or NMS, that was manufactured in the US at the Chattanooga assembly plant and in China at Nanjing by SAIC-Volkswagen. Developed to increase Volkswagen sales in North America, the Passat NMS is larger and cost less to produce. sold in the North America, South Korea, China, and Middle East. The separate B8 Passat model entered production in Europe in 2014, based on the MQB platform.

In 2019, the Passat NMS program was split into two as the North American one continued being produced on an older platform while the Chinese Passat moved on to the MQB platform, which resulted in Volkswagen marketed three models under the Passat nameplate globally at that time. The North American Passat was discontinued after the 2022 model year.

Volkswagen ended the production of the saloon Passat for the European market in 2022. The B9 Passat, released in 2023, is only available in an estate body style. The Passat continues to be available as a saloon in China.

Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2021 Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, and Passat vehicles. The front wheel bearing bolts may have been incorrectly tightened.
Consequence: The bolts may loosen and cause a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect the tightness of the wheel bearing bolts and replace the bolts, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 2, 2021. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 40R7.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to bring to your attention that I've been experiencing some noise in the cabin of my 2019 Passat that I find to be quite bothersome. Is there anything that can be done to address this issue?

We have owned five Passats in the current body style, including two 2013s (one of which was unfortunately totaled in an accident and replaced), a 2015, a 2017, and our current one, a 2020. While the 2020 model has a more powerful engine than its 4-cylinder 2017 predecessor, we did experience some surging at idle during the first 20,000 miles. The dealer recommended using premium fuel, which helped to some extent, but the issue never fully went away. At 27,000 miles, we had all 4 fuel injectors and the knock sensor replaced, which has improved the situation. We have found that the car runs okay on 88 octane. Unfortunately, we did experience issues with the shocks/struts before 15,000 miles, as there was essentially no damping and the car bounced all over the place. Additionally, after 28,000 miles, we noticed pronounced shuddering when applying the brakes moderately aggressively on long downhills, which has only gotten worse over time. The dealer checked the disc run-out and found a moderate amount, but unfortunately, brakes are not covered under warranty. Initially, they misdiagnosed the issue as overheating brake fluid and offered to flush and replace it for over $300, but we declined. As a result, we are now stuck with a car that we are paying almost $500/month for, which bounces like a carnival ride and shakes like it's coming apart under braking. While we would hope that Volkswagen would care enough about their reputation to find and implement a solution to alleviate our frustration, we are not holding our breath.

I've had the car for about a year now, and unfortunately, I've been experiencing some electrical issues since week one. Initially, the rear windows would go up and then close on their own. On one occasion, while driving on the highway, the car lost power and went into limp mode, which was quite concerning. I had to pull over, shut it off, and let the car reset. After starting it again, it seemed to be fine, but then it happened again. There were no check engine lights or any other warning signs, which made it even more frustrating. The dash lights flickered, and today, I lost all dash and touch screen. It was just black, and I was worried. However, after pulling over, I was relieved to find that everything was fine again. The touch screen seems to crash frequently, and the back-up camera goes out, but then it's fine again. It's been a horrid experience, and I don't feel safe driving it.

Hello! Recently, I purchased a new 20-year Passat R line with finance from Volkswagen. Since my existing car broke down in August, I was thinking about buying a new one. I heard that there is a Korean dealer in Atlanta and, as I like Volkswagen, I thought about buying from them. Unfortunately, my grandfather passed away from late September to October, so I had to go to Korea in a hurry. When I returned to Atlanta on Saturday the 10th, I visited an Atlanta Volkswagen dealership to buy a car. Even though the car I liked on the internet was not stocked yet, I was told to write the contract first. After test-driving the car with the same color option trim, I bought it at the end of 5 hours and came back to Montgomery, Alabama. I had too much luggage! When I arrived home, I checked the exterior and interior of the car and found black marks and an A-pillar scratch on the trunk hinges. I've been commuting to and from work, but the tire balance and wheel alignment didn't fit at all. When I told the dealer about these issues, he inspected the car quickly and said the Passat car was perfect. He even offered to test-drive with me when I come back to Atlanta. What's more, as it was my first time buying a new car, I didn't know about the other options (accessories), so I thought it was the original condition that my car had no tints and leather protectors. When I asked the dealer how much tinting would cost, he said it would be $399. I thought that since it's a new car, I had to invest. Thank you for listening to my story!When I got home, I discovered that the contract did not include basic tanning and leather seat protection. After contacting the dealer, he admitted his mistake and offered to take care of it when I come up to Atlanta for a car problem and tinting. Although I was initially frustrated, I am grateful to work in the quality department of the car manufacturing industry and have knowledgeable coworkers. I almost fell for the dealer's mistake, but I am glad I caught it. I have documented all the facts, and I am wondering if I can get a refund or exchange by contacting Volkswagen headquarters. I would appreciate any help or advice. Additionally, I have noticed some issues with the trim in the rear seat's door and too many sealers in the driver's compartment, which suggests that the car was not inspected properly or may be defective.

I had a 2014 Passat that I initially disliked when I first drove it. However, after adjusting the steering wheel and seat, I had a change of heart. When I drove it home after purchasing it, I felt terrible and thought I had made a mistake. At first, it felt like a cheap rental car. But as I got used to it, I began to love it. The same goes for this one. I absolutely love the motor, it's so much fun to drive. Although it does shake when it warms up and misses, the salesman says his Jetta does the same thing. The car may have some minor flaws, but the overall experience is what matters to me. The sum of the individual pieces is greater than its parts.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2020 Passat S model that I purchased in October 2020 for only $17,500. I think it's a great value for a midsize sedan. The car drives very well and has enhanced torque with its 2.0 Turbo engine. It's also very roomy and has good standard safety features. I was pleasantly surprised when I drove it at 120 mph on the highway without hearing any noise or vibration. Additionally, I love the super size roomy trunk. The car comes with a 4-year, 50,000-mile warranty, which is more than most competitors, except for the Hyundai Sonata. Lastly, it also has good gas mileage. Let me know if you have any questions!

No need to worry, the Passat is a great car in its own right! It's comfortable, reliable, and affordable compared to its Japanese competitors. The rear seat leg room and spacious trunk are definite positives, and the controls are easy to use. The display screen may be smaller than others, but it's still perfectly functional. The seating is very comfortable and supportive, and the steering is responsive, making the car very maneuverable. In sport mode or manual tiptronic mode, the car can perform well off the starting line and accelerates smoothly. The warranty is also excellent. While road noise can be a bit pronounced on highways, this can be improved with a change in tires. The transmission can be a bit jerky at slow stop and go speeds due to the gas-saving 6 speed transmission, but this is a minor issue. Although there were some strange issues with Apple CarPlay, using an actual Apple USB cable fixed that. Overall, I'm very happy with my Passat and look forward to driving it as our family car for years to come.

I really don't understand why there is so much negativity surrounding this car. Personally, I absolutely love my Passat. Having previously owned a 2017 Jetta, I can confidently say that my 2021 Passat feels just like my old Jetta, only much larger. The Passat is incredibly spacious, comfortably accommodating 4-5 people on long road trips with no complaints about legroom. Despite its size, the gas mileage is impressive (I achieved 38 mpg while highway driving on a 100-mile road trip). While the Passat may not be the fastest car on the road, it's important to remember that speed isn't the primary goal of this vehicle. The only feature I miss is a manual transmission. If Volkswagen offered a stick-shift option, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another Passat. I feel incredibly safe in this car, and the ride is smooth. I also happen to love the way it looks (although I may be biased since it resembles my old Jetta). Additionally, I was able to get a great deal on my car. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase!

I've owned this vehicle for about 3.5 years now. I purchased it from a second owner through a car dealer, and it was a Hertz rental unit. I've driven it for about 30K miles, and it has performed well without any major issues. I've done all the maintenance through VW, and they make it easy by emailing virtual coupons directly to me for all maintenance, including oil changes and tune-ups. The dealer network is plentiful, and they all compete with these emailed coupons. The OEM tires wore well, and I recently replaced them with the next higher grade 18-inch Continentals. The vehicle still drives smoothly, although shifting can be a bit jerky, especially at cold start, but it evens out later. I have put on the record about the transmission choppiness at cold start, just in case there is an issue in the future. The 72K miles/6-year VW warranty is a good one, and I haven't had to use it yet. My only gripe is an intermittent issue with the radio/CD system. From time to time, it just shuts off and takes numerous re-starts to reset the power. Of course, when I take it in to VW, it never manifests this issue. But this too is on the record for future issues. I got a great deal when I bought it less than a year old, and it has been a great investment without having to take it in the shorts for depreciation. I would purchase again, but this model/Passat has been obsoleted and is no longer offered/available. It has kind of restored my faith in the VW product. Edit - 1/22/24 - It is still performing well at 51K miles. The transmission still slips intermittently, but I still have it on my service record, even though VW says this is 'normal'. The radio continues to blank out/inop intermittently, which is more of a PITA than anything else. I put new tires/Conti's on it, and road noise has lessened a bit. No real issues. I'm averaging just over 30-mpg, mostly highway driving, using regular unleaded. Oil changes have risen to over one-hundred bucks, but I wait until they go on sale [VW mails me deals factory oil changes for 80-bucks].I would definitely consider buying this vehicle again, even though VW has discontinued this model/Passat in 2021.
