In January 2011, Volkswagen introduced a separate Passat model line, internally designated "Volkswagen New Midsize Sedan" or NMS, that was manufactured in the US at the Chattanooga assembly plant and in China at Nanjing by SAIC-Volkswagen. Developed to increase Volkswagen sales in North America, the Passat NMS is larger and cost less to produce. sold in the North America, South Korea, China, and Middle East. The separate B8 Passat model entered production in Europe in 2014, based on the MQB platform.
In 2019, the Passat NMS program was split into two as the North American one continued being produced on an older platform while the Chinese Passat moved on to the MQB platform, which resulted in Volkswagen marketed three models under the Passat nameplate globally at that time. The North American Passat was discontinued after the 2022 model year.
Volkswagen ended the production of the saloon Passat for the European market in 2022. The B9 Passat, released in 2023, is only available in an estate body style. The Passat continues to be available as a saloon in China.

- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2021 Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, and Passat vehicles. The front wheel bearing bolts may have been incorrectly tightened.
- Consequence: The bolts may loosen and cause a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect the tightness of the wheel bearing bolts and replace the bolts, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 2, 2021. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 40R7.

I've owned this vehicle for about 3.5 years now. I purchased it from a second owner through a car dealer, and it was a Hertz rental unit. I've driven it for about 30K miles, and it has performed well without any major issues. I've done all the maintenance through VW, and they make it easy by emailing virtual coupons directly to me for all maintenance, including oil changes and tune-ups. The dealer network is plentiful, and they all compete with these emailed coupons. The OEM tires wore well, and I recently replaced them with the next higher grade 18-inch Continentals. The vehicle still drives smoothly, although shifting can be a bit jerky, especially at cold start, but it evens out later. I have put on the record about the transmission choppiness at cold start, just in case there is an issue in the future. The 72K miles/6-year VW warranty is a good one, and I haven't had to use it yet. My only gripe is an intermittent issue with the radio/CD system. From time to time, it just shuts off and takes numerous re-starts to reset the power. Of course, when I take it in to VW, it never manifests this issue. But this too is on the record for future issues. I got a great deal when I bought it less than a year old, and it has been a great investment without having to take it in the shorts for depreciation. I would purchase again, but this model/Passat has been obsoleted and is no longer offered/available. It has kind of restored my faith in the VW product. Edit - 1/22/24 - It is still performing well at 51K miles. The transmission still slips intermittently, but I still have it on my service record, even though VW says this is 'normal'. The radio continues to blank out/inop intermittently, which is more of a PITA than anything else. I put new tires/Conti's on it, and road noise has lessened a bit. No real issues. I'm averaging just over 30-mpg, mostly highway driving, using regular unleaded. Oil changes have risen to over one-hundred bucks, but I wait until they go on sale [VW mails me deals factory oil changes for 80-bucks].I would definitely consider buying this vehicle again, even though VW has discontinued this model/Passat in 2021.

Congratulations on your purchase of a low mileage certified Passat SE! The seats look like leather but are actually much more durable, which is great. It's good to hear that the car has been reliable and fuel efficient. It's also smart to plan ahead for upgrading the tires and shocks when needed. Changing the oil at 6 months/6,000 miles is a great idea for a turbo engine. The clean styling and bright LED headlights are definitely a plus. My first Passat was a 2008, driven to 230,000 miles. I knew I would eventually own another, so when I found this 2020 Passat, it was inevitable. I am very pleased with the engineering, handling, overall look, and luxury. Thank you, Volkswagen.

I really like the Passat, but I do notice that it has more road and wind noise compared to other cars in its class. Perhaps it would be even better if it had double layer windows.

Did you know that VW is releasing 'fixed' TDI VW's, including the Passat? Despite what some people may think, these cars are actually great and can save you money. I recently bought a TDI with 122k miles at a fantastic price and it's been amazing. I get 45mpg on the highway and only need to fill up every other week, which costs me just $140 a month. Plus, the car is spacious and beautiful, even for someone as tall as me at 6'6

I've had the car for about a year now, and unfortunately, I've been experiencing some electrical issues since week one. Initially, the rear windows would go up and then close on their own. On one occasion, while driving on the highway, the car lost power and went into limp mode, which was quite concerning. I had to pull over, shut it off, and let the car reset. After starting it again, it seemed to be fine, but then it happened again. There were no check engine lights or any other warning signs, which made it even more frustrating. The dash lights flickered, and today, I lost all dash and touch screen. It was just black, and I was worried. However, after pulling over, I was relieved to find that everything was fine again. The touch screen seems to crash frequently, and the back-up camera goes out, but then it's fine again. It's been a horrid experience, and I don't feel safe driving it.

Hello! Recently, I purchased a new 20-year Passat R line with finance from Volkswagen. Since my existing car broke down in August, I was thinking about buying a new one. I heard that there is a Korean dealer in Atlanta and, as I like Volkswagen, I thought about buying from them. Unfortunately, my grandfather passed away from late September to October, so I had to go to Korea in a hurry. When I returned to Atlanta on Saturday the 10th, I visited an Atlanta Volkswagen dealership to buy a car. Even though the car I liked on the internet was not stocked yet, I was told to write the contract first. After test-driving the car with the same color option trim, I bought it at the end of 5 hours and came back to Montgomery, Alabama. I had too much luggage! When I arrived home, I checked the exterior and interior of the car and found black marks and an A-pillar scratch on the trunk hinges. I've been commuting to and from work, but the tire balance and wheel alignment didn't fit at all. When I told the dealer about these issues, he inspected the car quickly and said the Passat car was perfect. He even offered to test-drive with me when I come back to Atlanta. What's more, as it was my first time buying a new car, I didn't know about the other options (accessories), so I thought it was the original condition that my car had no tints and leather protectors. When I asked the dealer how much tinting would cost, he said it would be $399. I thought that since it's a new car, I had to invest. Thank you for listening to my story!When I got home, I discovered that the contract did not include basic tanning and leather seat protection. After contacting the dealer, he admitted his mistake and offered to take care of it when I come up to Atlanta for a car problem and tinting. Although I was initially frustrated, I am grateful to work in the quality department of the car manufacturing industry and have knowledgeable coworkers. I almost fell for the dealer's mistake, but I am glad I caught it. I have documented all the facts, and I am wondering if I can get a refund or exchange by contacting Volkswagen headquarters. I would appreciate any help or advice. Additionally, I have noticed some issues with the trim in the rear seat's door and too many sealers in the driver's compartment, which suggests that the car was not inspected properly or may be defective.

I am disappointed with the car I purchased almost two months ago. However, I have noticed some issues with the front assistants that cannot be disabled despite being shown on the dash as disabled. If someone passes too close in front of me, the car automatically brakes, which can be inconvenient. Additionally, the car automatically brakes if it thinks I am going too fast in a corner, which I find unnecessary. These features seem like a way for VW to generate revenue for spare parts and service. Another issue I have noticed is that if the front grill assistants get covered with snow, the cruise control is disabled. I believe that VW should consider installing Google maps instead of the current GPS system. Overall, I think the car has some areas for improvement. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
