The Volkswagen Passat is a nameplate of large family cars (D-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen since 1973. It has been marketed variously as the Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat, with varying body styles such as saloon, estate, and hatchback.

A "four-door coupé" variant of the Passat with a lower roof was released in the North American market in 2008 as the Passat CC, which was then renamed to Volkswagen CC. The CC was succeeded by the Arteon in 2017.

In January 2011, Volkswagen introduced a separate Passat model line, internally designated "Volkswagen New Midsize Sedan" or NMS, that was manufactured in the US at the Chattanooga assembly plant and in China at Nanjing by SAIC-Volkswagen. Developed to increase Volkswagen sales in North America, the Passat NMS is larger and cost less to produce. sold in the North America, South Korea, China, and Middle East. The separate B8 Passat model entered production in Europe in 2014, based on the MQB platform.

In 2019, the Passat NMS program was split into two as the North American one continued being produced on an older platform while the Chinese Passat moved on to the MQB platform, which resulted in Volkswagen marketed three models under the Passat nameplate globally at that time. The North American Passat was discontinued after the 2022 model year.

Volkswagen ended the production of the saloon Passat for the European market in 2022. The B9 Passat, released in 2023, is only available in an estate body style. The Passat continues to be available as a saloon in China.

Common 2006 Volkswagen Passat problems

The Volkswagen Passat 2006 is known to have several common problems, primarily related to electrical faults and engine issues.

One of the most frequently reported problems is battery drain. This issue can occur after a poorly done electrical job, which can lead to a significant decrease in battery life. To address this, it is recommended to get a rewire that can troubleshoot using a multimeter to ensure the wiring is done correctly.

Another electrical problem is the car discharging every battery that enters it, including a new battery. This issue can be challenging to diagnose and may require a comprehensive scan using a VAG scan tool to identify the specific fault codes.

The Volkswagen Passat 2006 also has engine issues, particularly with the timing chain tensioner. The EA888 2.0-liter engine has a history of tensioner problems that can lead to a loose timing chain and catastrophic engine failure. This issue can be particularly problematic and may require significant repairs or replacement of the engine.

In addition to these specific issues, the Volkswagen Passat 2006 has a reputation for being a problematic car, particularly after the warranty expires.

Despite these issues, some owners have reported being happy with their Passat 2006, particularly if they have a European spec car. However, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and to take steps to address them promptly to avoid more significant issues down the line.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-10
  • VIN: WVWAK73C66P
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,ENGINE
  • Summary: My family and I have been VW owners for over 60 years. Unfortunately, the 2006 VW Passat has been layered with defects, negligent manufacturing issues, faulty wiring, electrical problems, computer glitches, to mention a few. There have been many recalls including an official recall by the NHTSA, for steering linkage problems and tie rod assembly which caused a loss of steering, crashes and deaths. Over 292 complaints are filed with Consumer Affairs, over 561 defects reported, and thousands of horror stories like mine about this car. It's considered a lemon by many car professionals. Many dealerships in the USA offered to inspect, and replace the electronic steering column lock free of charge and address any other concerns, which should be standard, reasonable behavior for all VW dealerships, mandated by this Federal agency. Shortly after this car almost killed me in 2013, VW put me through countless stressful hours of calls, emails and the like and still refused to be fully accountable. Shortly after my almost end of life, the notorious VW Emissions Scandal spoke volumes. VW was well aware of their defects including the electrical system in the steering column/immobilizer, (the system won’t recognize the key; a module in the car that connects the key and starts the engine is defective). In many cases, the entire steering column is defective and has to be completely replaced because the car’s pistons, internal combustion and engine are all subpar. Even the Sunroof and drains are defective and every time it rains, there is a flood in my car which has caused life threatening mold and mildew. I am respectfully asking for your help in having VW provide me, a near [XXX] woman, a safe, reliable, car without another defective sunroof and without defective water drains. It can be used as long as it's reliable and without deadly mold and mildew. I have photos. Thank you. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

THE FIRST TIME WAS SHORTLY AFTER THE PURCHASE AND THE CAR CAME OUT OF GEAR IN MY DRIVEWAY AND BEGAN ROLLING. MY 65 YO MOM HAD TO STOP IT AND PUSH IT UP AS SHE WAS HOME ALONE. IT TURNED ON ANOTHER TIME WHILE I WAS CROSSING AN INTERSECTION AND I WAS ALMOST T-BONED. I HAD IT REPLACED AFTER THIS INCIDENT. IN MAY 2020 THE PARKING BRAKE WOULD NOT DISENGAGE AND I NEEDED TO HAVE IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC. THE BRAKE WAS STUCK ON AND THE COMPUTER CONTROL UNIT BROKE. I PAID $2500 TO HAVE THE UNIT REPLACED. IN DEC 2020 (ONLY 7 MONTHS LATER) THE EXACT THING HAPPENED AGAIN. I WAS UNABLE TO DISENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE AND NEEDED TO TOW IT TO MY MECHANIC. THE CALIPER AND COMPUTER BROKE AGAIN. THE COST IS SIMILAR. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. IF YOU LOOK AT ANY VW FORUMS YOU WILL SEE THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH MANY PEOPLE HAVING THEIR BRAKE STUCK AND UNABLE TO ENGAGE/DISENGAGE THE UNIT. I REACHED OUT TO VW AND HAD NO RESOLUTION. I REQUEST THE PARKING BRAKE BE RECALLED AND EVERYONE WHO HAD WORK DONE ON IT, INCLUDING MYSELF, RECEIVED A FULL REFUND.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-05-25
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: WVWEK73C76P
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS USED IN THE B6 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT 2.0T ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHER VW MODELS ARE NOTORIOUSLY PROBLEMATIC. THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL UNIT NEEDING A SOFTWARE UPDATE WHICH WAS DONE ON MY VEHICLE, HOWEVER THIS DOES NOT ADDRESS THE REAL ISSUE WITH THESE TRANSMISSIONS. THE WIDESPREAD AND MORE SERIOUS ISSUE WITH THESE TRANSMISSIONS IS THE VALVE BODY ASSEMBLY PART OF THE TRANSMISSION CAUSING HARD SHIFTS USUALLY BETWEEN FIRST AND SECOND OR THIRD AND FOURTH GEAR. THESE HARD SHIFTS CAUSE THE ENTIRE CAR AND IT'S PASSENGERS TO JERK VIOLENTLY DURING UPSHIFTS AND SOMETIMES DOWNSHIFTS BETWEEN THESE GEARS. AT ONLY 91,000 MILES AND WELL TAKEN CARE OF MY CAR HAS DEVELOPED THIS PROBLEM BETWEEN THIRD AND FOURTH GEAR MAKING IT FEEL VERY DANGEROUS AND UNSETTLING FOR THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS OF THE VEHICLE WHEN GETTING UP TO SPEED ESPECIALLY ON ON-RAMPS TO THE HIGHWAY. I ALSO WANT TO MENTION THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS DESTROYED MY MOTOR MOUNTS AS WELL. VW SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS DEFECTIVE PART OF THE TRANSMISSION SIMILAR TO THE WAY HONDA DID WITH THEIR ODYSSEY, ONLY THIS DOES NOT REQUIRE THE WHOLE TRANSMISSION TO BE REPLACED LIKE WITH THE ODYSSEY. THIS IS AN ENORMOUS SAFETY CONCERN THAT NEEDS TO BE ACKNOWLEDGED AND ADDRESS BY VOLKSWAGEN, THE LARGEST AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURER IN THE WORLD. *TR

AND IT CONTINUES TO DO IT TO ME. IF I CAN GET PAST THIRD GEAR IT'S FINE AND 1ST AND 2ND GEAR ARE OK. I JUST PURCHASED THE CAR AND CALLED ON RECALLS THERE WEREN'T ANY. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-06-01
  • VIN: WVWEK73C56P
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I HAVE A VOS WAGON 2016 AND I HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM. THEY CHANGED A MODEL THAT GOES BEFORE THE BOMB OF THE GASOLINE. THAT A RECALL THAT OCCURRED IN THE DEALER. I KNOW THE CAR HAS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM, BUT I DO NOT KNOW THE CAUSE. I CHECKED THE BOMB MANUALLY AND IT WORKS. THERE SEEMS TO BE NO ELECTRICITY AND THE ONLY THING THAT WORKS ARE THE LIGHTS AND THE SUNROOF. PARTS OF THE CAR INSIDE DO NOT WORK. WHEN I WAS CHECKING THE VEHICLE, ON THE CARPET IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT, IT WAS HUMID. THERE WAS WATER IN REVISING THE CAUSE. I TOOK OUT BUCKETS OF WATER FROM THE CAR, AND I THINK THAT'S WHAT CAUSING THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEM. THE ONLY THING I COULD THINK WOULD RESULT IN THIS MUCH WATER WOULD BE THROUGH THE SUNROOF. A FRIEND RECOMMENDED ME A PLACE TO CHECK THIS OUT, AND HE SAID HE COULD FIX IT. WITHOUT TELLING THIS GUY ANY BIG DETAILS, HE CONFIRMED MY DOUBTS ABOUT THE CAUSE. HE BELIEVED THAT THE MOST REASONABLE THING THAT OCCURRED WAS THAT THE SUNROOF LEAKED. THE WATER DOESN'T GO OUT, BUT INSTEAD, COME INSIDE AND CAUSE DAMAGES IN THE ELECTRICAL FIELDS OF THE CAR. SO, THIS IS WHY I WAS WONDERING IF THIS COULD BE A RECALL.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-06-23
  • VIN: WVWAK73C66P
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL. THE PAST TWO WEEKS MY VEHICLE HAS NOT STARTED AS IT NORMALLY DOES. IT TAKES TWO OR THREE KEY PUSHES TO GET MY ENGINE TO START UPON STARTING MY CAR, AND THEN IT FIRES UP. IT IS DIFFICULT TO GET UP TO AND MAINTAIN SPEEDS ON THE HIGHWAY. IF AND WHEN I AM MAINTAINING SPEED ON THE HIGHWAY ITS COMMON FOR THE ENGINE TO HICCUP AND THEN RETURN BACK TO ITS SPEED WITHOUT ANY CHANGE IN ACCELERATION. GOING UP HILLS IT LACKS POWER AND IF THERE IS MORE THAN ONE PERSON IN THE CAR WHEN GOING UP A HILL THE CAR WILL MISFIRE. ON TOP OF ALL OF THIS IT IS PRACTICALLY DRINKING GAS LIKE WATER AND I NORMALLY GET GREAT GAS MILEAGE. IT IS STARTING TO GIVE OFF A FUEL SMELL WHILE DRIVING TOO AND MY MECHANIC DOES NOT KNOW WHY.

We purchased the car from my brother-in-law who had taken great care of it. He had bought it new and had done regular maintenance like clockwork, only using synthetic oil. Although it had 90k miles on it when we bought it, it was in immaculate condition, except for some peeling on the inside front doors. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues when we drove it 150 miles and lost oil pressure, which resulted in us having to tow it 150 miles back home. The dealer informed us that we needed a new motor, which would cost $7500, and that didn't even include the turbo replacement. Instead, we decided to go with an autorepair shop and spent $5500. However, within the next 150 miles, we noticed that the oil was leaking. It turned out to be the rear main seal, which cost us another $1200. We now have $15k invested in a used car with only 90k miles on it, which is quite frustrating. We hope that VW will take responsibility for these issues and consider covering them under the lemon law.

The air conditioning and window washer fluid pump both malfunctioned in the third year of ownership, and the check engine light remains illuminated. Additionally, the interior is peeling, with worn-off buttons and bubbling and peeling lock buttons, even in the back seat where there is minimal use. The vehicle has also begun to show signs of rust. Despite purchasing the car brand new with only 16 miles on it, I have decided not to purchase a Volkswagen again.

I was disappointed with my purchase of a new 2006 Passat. My previous car was the new beetle and a friend had the 2001 Passat. Unfortunately, changes were made that must have cut costs with interior design and electrical system. Within 2 years, the AC failed, front headlights, interior lights and service buttons were always on. Also, after two summers of heat the AC controls, stereo buttons and auto windows had blistering and then peeling. It looks like a pos! However, it still drives fair considering the electrical system is out of whack. This will be the last time I buy new - overrated, definitely last time buying VW. The best car I ever had was a Lexus. **Note: the guy is still driving his 2001 with 185,000 miles plus. Good luck if you decide to buy a new VW.

In late December 2006, my wife purchased a new Passat. Unfortunately, on the night we drove it home, the right headlight failed. It took the dealership nearly two weeks to find and install another unit. In mid-May 2007, the car started to make a loud buzzing noise on start-up. We immediately took it to the dealer who advised that a bolt had sheared on the oil pump and it needed an entire new engine! The dealership has had the car for almost 4 weeks as of June 14, 2007, and is now installing the third engine because the replacement engine had the same problem. During the first 6 months of ownership, this car has been out of service for more than 5 weeks. We understand how frustrating this must be for you and we hope that the dealership can resolve this issue as soon as possible.

I had a negative experience with my previous car, a VW, which required multiple expensive repairs. Despite purchasing an extended warranty, I had to replace two A/C compressors, one ABS module, the alternator, the fan motor, the trunk latch, the catalytic converter, and a part for the Turbo. Additionally, the interior lock buttons and arm rests peeled, but VW did not offer any assistance. As someone who is accustomed to Asian cars, I was disappointed with the reliability of my VW. After trading it in for a new 2015 Mazda6, I am much happier with my car's styling, mileage, quality, and reliability. I believe that reliability is a crucial factor when choosing a car, and I have found that Lexus, Mazda, Toyota, and Honda are consistently rated as the top brands for reliability. I am pleased with my decision to switch to Mazda and have not experienced any problems with my new car.

To compare this automobile to a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord would not be fair. It is in a league of its own. I would compare it to a Volvo S60, Nissan Maxima, 2006 Toyota Avalon, BMW 3-Series, etc. The German engineering is truly innovative and the car is a remarkable package all put together. When driving it, you would think you are driving a BMW or an Audi (OK, you probably actually are driving an Audi) and the turbo makes this car a blast. It has lots of power, features, room, good looks and personality. I used to think VW's were overpriced but now I see they are underpriced for the class of vehicles they truly are in competition against.

I've been driving the car for seven months now and I'm happy to report that it hasn't had any problems or defects so far. The 2.0T engine is impressively quick and the car itself is nimble and responsive. As an auto enthusiast, I tend to drive the car hard, but the brakes are excellent and I particularly love the 'brake assist' feature. While the steering is pretty good, it's a little light for my taste. Under hard acceleration, there's some 'torque steer' which causes the car to veer to the right somewhat, but this is normal for front-wheel drive cars. The transmission is also pretty good and downshifts quickly for passing. The only thing I would change is the location of the Tiptronic function, which I would prefer to be adjacent to the 'Sport' setting. Overall, I'm really enjoying my experience with this car!

I recently purchased a 3.6 Luxury model with less than 7K miles and it's been an absolute pleasure to drive. Although, it has required frequent repairs, usually related to electrical issues, and now with 31K miles, a new engine is being installed due to an oil pump bolt coming loose. My wife is suggesting we sell it and get another Subaru, which has been a reliable choice for us in the past. We've owned 4 Subarus, all of which went over 200K miles without any issues. While my Passat has been fun to drive, I may have to face reality and sell it since it has required so many repairs. My previous VW, an '01 Jetta TDI, had similar issues with the turbo and glow plugs, and the check engine light was often on. Overall, I'm hoping to find a more reliable car in the future.

I have owned my 3.6L car since it was new and it has been great. With 40k miles on the clock, I have never been stranded and have had no major issues. On the highway, I get amazing MPG, for example, from SF to Tahoe I average 28 to 30 MPG. In the city, I get 16 to 18 MPG depending on my driving style. The car is solid with no rattles, and it was built in Germany. The capacity is impressive, with folding rear seats that can fit items over 7ft. I can even fit a rear-facing child seat and still have leg room in the front. I have had no issues in over a year. The park sensor beep in rain issue was fixed and now there are no issues. The performance, handling, features, and quality are unmatched. It has more HP and torque than a BMW 330 and can take on any challenge. The styling has held up well, although it may not be as great as a BMW. However, I am willing to sacrifice a little vanity for HP, room, cup holders, and features.

I've been driving my 2006 VW Passat turbo 2.0T for about 7 months now and I have to say, it's a great car! It has enough power to take you on the highway and the driving experience is excellent. The interior is upscale and there's plenty of room. I bought it with 103k mileage to support my 2010 VW Tiguan and, other than the first major repairs I did as the 3rd owner, there haven't been any issues. I would definitely recommend it, but keep in mind that it's not a Japanese vehicle and the cost of maintenance is higher. I'll be sure to post more reviews as time goes by.
