2004 Volkswagen Passat problems
The Volkswagen Passat is a nameplate of large family cars (D-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen since 1973. It has been marketed variously as the Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat, with varying body styles such as saloon, estate, and hatchback.
A "four-door coupé" variant of the Passat with a lower roof was released in the North American market in 2008 as the Passat CC, which was then renamed to Volkswagen CC. The CC was succeeded by the Arteon in 2017.
In January 2011, Volkswagen introduced a separate Passat model line, internally designated "Volkswagen New Midsize Sedan" or NMS, that was manufactured in the US at the Chattanooga assembly plant and in China at Nanjing by SAIC-Volkswagen. Developed to increase Volkswagen sales in North America, the Passat NMS is larger and cost less to produce. sold in the North America, South Korea, China, and Middle East. The separate B8 Passat model entered production in Europe in 2014, based on the MQB platform.
In 2019, the Passat NMS program was split into two as the North American one continued being produced on an older platform while the Chinese Passat moved on to the MQB platform, which resulted in Volkswagen marketed three models under the Passat nameplate globally at that time. The North American Passat was discontinued after the 2022 model year.
Volkswagen ended the production of the saloon Passat for the European market in 2022. The B9 Passat, released in 2023, is only available in an estate body style. The Passat continues to be available as a saloon in China.

Common 2004 Volkswagen Passat problems
The Volkswagen Passat, produced since 1973, is one of the most successful and second-best-selling models for the brand, next to the Volkswagen Golf. However, like any vehicle, the Passat has had its fair share of common problems, particularly in the mid-2000s models. Here are some of the issues that have been reported by owners:
- Engine Misfires: The engine may misfire on occasion, especially in the mid-2000s models. This can lead to a loss of power, reduced acceleration, and poor fuel economy.
- Engine Oil Leaks: The car tends to leak oil from the engine, necessitating early replacement of the liquid.
- Digital Display Fault: The digital display in the instrument cluster tends to go dark or lose its ability after driving, which can be a significant inconvenience for drivers.
- Suspension Problems: Noises from the suspension, poor cushioning from bumps, and issues with tracking straight and feeling secure in corners have been reported in the 2001-2005 Passat models.
- Electrical Faults: Electrical faults, such as false warning lights on the dash and electric window issues, have been reported in the 2001-2005 Passat models.
- Gearbox Failure: While rare, gearboxes have been known to fail on later cars, particularly those with higher mileage.
- Catalytic Converter Failure: Diesel models, in particular, can suffer from catalytic converter failure, which can lead to MoT failures.
- Clock Spring Failure: Volkswagen owners have reported clock spring problems, which can lead to a disabled driver's side airbag, horn, and steering wheel controls.
- Ignition Coil Failure: Ignition coils can fail, causing the engine to suddenly lose power and leading to shaking or hesitation.
- Engine Oil Sludge: Engine oil sludge has been a significant issue in the 2002 and 2003 Passat models, leading to engine failure and the need for a new engine in some cases.
These issues can be costly to repair and may affect the overall reliability of the vehicle. However, with proper maintenance and care, many of these problems can be avoided or mitigated. It's essential to be aware of these common issues before purchasing a used Volkswagen Passat, particularly those from the mid-2000s, to ensure that you're making an informed decision.

2004 Volkswagen Passat recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat.
- Manufacturer: The Gates Corporation
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
- Summary: The Gates Corporation (Gates) is recalling certain aftermarket Tru-Flow Water Pumps, part number TFW 41127, sold at certain NAPA Auto Parts and/or installed by automotive service technicians after November 1, 2013 (and manufactured August 2013 through October 2013) that have a black-colored pulley/sprocket or do not have 'US9377' stamped on the water pump housing. These service replacement parts were sold for use in model year 1999-2005 Audi A4, 2000-2006 Audi TT, 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle, 1999-2006 Golf, 1999-2008 and 2011-2013 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2000-2005 Volkswagen Passat. In the affected water pumps, the pulley or sprocket that turns the timing belt may develop microfractures causing the timing belt to fail.
- Consequence: A failure of the timing belt may cause the engine to shut down, potentially increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: Gates will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water pump, free of charge. The recall began during May 2014. Owners may contact The Gates Corporation at 1-303-744-1911.

I recently purchased this car and have had a great experience with it so far. It has been driven at high speeds during an Audi Quattro Club weekend at Road America and it held its own at 110 mph plus. Additionally, it has been very comfortable during several long trips. The car is also a very useful hauler for all kinds of stuff. The sound system is excellent and I have a large collection of cassettes and CDs to play. I personally prefer the front end styling to the later chrome as it is understated and not too glitzy. The engine is wonderful; it is strong, powerful, smooth and gets remarkably good mileage for an eight, achieving 25 mpg plus at 65-70 mph. However, my major complaint is that the car was delivered with OnStar, which was important to me, but two years later (and three years short of the new car warranty) VW canceled the service. Unfortunately, VW's response to my complaint was not satisfactory and they did not offer a solution.

Hi there! I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a great experience with your car! It sounds like you've really found the perfect combination of features for your needs. I'm especially happy to hear that the driver's seat is so comfortable - that's such an important factor for long trips. And it's great to hear that you're getting better gas mileage than you expected! It's always a nice surprise when a car exceeds your expectations. I can definitely understand why you want to keep driving this car for a long time. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

I bought my 2004 Passat GLX 4motion slightly used with less than 9,000 miles on it. Living in North Idaho for 11 years, this little car handled everything the weather threw at it. Now that I'm in Florida, I still love my car. At 65,000 miles, it has had zero problems. I always do the routine maintenance and it still runs amazingly well. I have always had Japanese cars with their excellent repair record, but I loved the way this little car handled so I bought it. I always thought that if it became a problem, I would sell it and move on. When it's time to replace this car, I'll get another German car. I just love the way they handle. It's crazy, but I really do love this car.

I'm so glad to hear that you fell in love with Passat overseas and that you now have your first brand new Passat! It's great to know that even the two different used Passats you had were so well built and reliable. It's wonderful that you never have to worry about this car leaving you stranded with mechanical problems. Besides routine maintenance, you haven't seen a mechanic in years! Buying a Volkswagen is a perfect way to enjoy smart, solid German engineering without the prices of Mercedes and BMW!

Buying the diesel was the best decision I could have made! I have a Dodge Ram with a Hemi that was costing me $800 per month in fuel bills. Now, I only spend about $200 USD per month. Although the car is for my wife, it's really the only vehicle we use. The consistent fuel mileage is averaging 32-33 MPG in both city and highway driving. At 85 mph, I get about 32 mpg. If you keep it to 75-78 mph, you can get 38-39 mpg with the AC running. The engine noise is a bit strong in the first 2000 miles, but then it really smooths out. Diesels are meant to be driven, so if you keep it in the garage, buy a gas engine. There is a bit of turbo lag below 1500 RPM, but once you pass the lag, the power is great!

I had a very negative experience with my VW due to multiple issues, including engine and electrical problems, as well as having to replace two front axels and all four coil packs. Despite my complaints to VW, I did not receive a recall on the coil packs until two years later, which was too late for me as I had already gotten rid of the car due to the uncertainty of what would go wrong next. The cost of repairs at the dealership was also very high. As a result of this experience, I have decided to never purchase a VW again and have instead opted for a Nissan Rogue.

My experience with Passat started in 1999 with a wagon 1.9L TDI with 110Hp and a 5 gear manual transmission. Later, I also had the sedan version with the same motor. A few months ago, I upgraded to a new Passat wagon with a 1.9L TDI engine, 6-speed manual transmission, and 130HP. The sedan was replaced with an Audi A4 with the same motor. I really enjoy driving the Passat. It is a comfortable, reliable, and economical car from a prestigious brand. I have never driven an automatic Passat, but I assume it is not as exciting. When comparing the Passat to the A4, the Passat is a better value in Portugal, costing about 35000 USD with taxes, which is 5000 USD less than the A4. Despite the A4 being one of the most beautiful cars in the world, I don't think it's worth the extra cost.

I purchased this car for the same reason many people choose Volkswagens: they look great and are enjoyable to drive. However, they can be a bit of a hassle when they start to break down. Unfortunately, my car has had a variety of issues. While I may not choose to buy a Volkswagen again, I do know many friends with Passats and Jettas who have experienced similar problems. Volkswagens tend to be reliable up until around 60,000 miles, after which they may not perform as well. Additionally, they do not hold their value as well as some other cars. I will say that this car was spacious and enjoyable to drive, and I felt secure in it due to its weight. However, there are many other cars on the market, so it's important not to settle on a Volkswagen.

I purchased a 2004 Volkswagen Passat GLS TDI for its spaciousness, comfort, and impressive fuel economy. However, I faced some challenges while driving it in my area, especially during heavy snowfall. Despite having front-wheel drive, traction control, and four studded winter tires, I found it difficult to drive through 5-10 inches of snow due to its ground clearance of only 4 inches. Additionally, during a particularly cold week when the temperature dropped to -25 C, I had trouble starting the car and it took a long time to warm up. I later learned that many people were experiencing similar issues with their VWs. Although the car left me stranded on several occasions, I eventually decided to sell it and purchase a Subaru instead.

It seems that many W8s experience a cam adjuster issue that can be quite costly to repair, around $10K, and can take up to a month to fix. Unfortunately, VW of America has not provided any warranty assistance or support to their dealers, who may struggle to fix these cars. Due to the cost of parts and frequent issues, a W8 can end up being more expensive to maintain than a Porsche. It may not be the most practical car for everyday use.
