1992 Volkswagen Passat problems

The Volkswagen Passat is a nameplate of large family cars (D-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen since 1973. It has been marketed variously as the Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat, with varying body styles such as saloon, estate, and hatchback.

A "four-door coupé" variant of the Passat with a lower roof was released in the North American market in 2008 as the Passat CC, which was then renamed to Volkswagen CC. The CC was succeeded by the Arteon in 2017.

In January 2011, Volkswagen introduced a separate Passat model line, internally designated "Volkswagen New Midsize Sedan" or NMS, that was manufactured in the US at the Chattanooga assembly plant and in China at Nanjing by SAIC-Volkswagen. Developed to increase Volkswagen sales in North America, the Passat NMS is larger and cost less to produce. sold in the North America, South Korea, China, and Middle East. The separate B8 Passat model entered production in Europe in 2014, based on the MQB platform.

In 2019, the Passat NMS program was split into two as the North American one continued being produced on an older platform while the Chinese Passat moved on to the MQB platform, which resulted in Volkswagen marketed three models under the Passat nameplate globally at that time. The North American Passat was discontinued after the 2022 model year.

Volkswagen ended the production of the saloon Passat for the European market in 2022. The B9 Passat, released in 2023, is only available in an estate body style. The Passat continues to be available as a saloon in China.

Common 1992 Volkswagen Passat problems

The Volkswagen Passat, a midsize sedan with full-size aspirations, is known for its spacious cabin, ample trunk space, and serene ride. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported over the years.

  • Engine Misfires: Engine misfires are a common problem in the Volkswagen Passat, with 138 owners reporting it as the fourth most common issue. The problem is caused by bad ignition coils, ignition wires, or spark plugs. This issue has been reported in model years ranging from 1998 to 2010, with an average occurrence at 88,873 miles. Symptoms include engine sputtering, shaking, and jerking. Some owners have reported a sudden loss of engine power while driving on the highway, and the problem can trigger the check engine light to turn on. The estimated repair cost ranges from $100 to $500, depending on the components that need replacing.
  • Digital Display Failure: The digital display on the instrument cluster stopping to work is the third most common problem, reported by 179 owners. This issue has been reported in 14 model years, including 1995 and every model year from 1998 to 2010. The average mileage at which the problem occurs is 134,623 miles, but it has been reported as early as 14,000 miles. The display can function intermittently or go dark completely, often during high temperatures or humidity. The solution is to replace the entire instrument cluster, with an estimated repair cost of $101 to $128 for parts and labor.
  • Engine Oil Leaks: Engine oil leaks due to failing valve cover gaskets are a common problem in the Volkswagen Passat, reported by 214 owners. The problem has been reported in 13 model years, from 1998 to 2010. The average mileage at which the problem occurs is 102,809 miles, but it has been reported as early as 11,555 miles and as late as 227,800 miles. The problem affects several engine options, including the 1.8-liter four-cylinder turbo, 1.9-liter four-cylinder diesel turbo, 2.0-liter four-cylinder, 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo, 2.8-liter V6, and 3.6-liter V6. Symptoms include smelling burning oil, seeing oil on the garage floor, or having to add oil several times in a month. The repair involves replacing the valve cover gaskets, with an estimated cost of $156 to $224.
  • ABS Light Due to ABS Control Module Failure: This is the most common problem reported by over 250 owners, affecting 15 model years from 1993 to 2010. The ABS light illuminates, and the brake lights start blinking. In some cases, other indicator lights, such as oil level, power steering, traction control, or engine, also light up. The problem is usually caused by a failing ABS control module, which can affect the state emissions test in California. The estimated repair cost to replace the ABS control module ranges from $1,628 to $1,783, but one owner reported receiving a higher estimate of $2,300.
  • Oil Sludge Resulting in Engine Failure: This is the most-reported problem in the 2002 Volkswagen Passat, with 112 total complaints. The problem is caused by oil sludge, which can result in engine failure. The average cost to fix this issue is $2,800, with an average mileage of 92,000 miles.

In conclusion, while the Volkswagen Passat is a popular and reliable vehicle, it is not immune to common problems. These issues range from engine misfires and digital display failure to engine oil leaks and ABS control module failure. It is essential for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and consider them when purchasing a used Volkswagen Passat.

Negative 1992 Volkswagen Passat car reviews

  1. Jeffry Rice 2024-07-22

I had a wagon with a 5-speed manual that I drove a lot. Unfortunately, the fan relays would blow out every 18 months, and the muffler cost $600 and had to be replaced even if you just needed the pipe done. Additionally, they wanted to swap the steering rack too, not just the entire front end. However, I found that it was cheaper to just buy new tires every year. The drivetrain became misaligned, creating an interesting dogleg in the shift pattern. Eventually, it decided it had had enough of Cleveland and just started to fall apart at age 8. During summer months, wax sealant would drip out of every orifice. I hope this helps!

  3. Reinhold Kshlerin 2024-04-17

This vehicle has had numerous issues with its automatic transmission, AC, electrical system, motor mounts, control arms, fuel pump, fuel sending unit, gas tank, and oil leaks, despite having less than 120 kilometers on it. As a result, I have lost confidence in Volkswagen and will not be purchasing from them again.

  4. Cullen Bogan 2024-02-15

Your vehicle has held up fairly well over the years, but the styling is a bit dated and the noise and vibration are not up to today's standards. However, it's great to hear that it has good residual value. I would love to learn more about why that is!

  5. Matt Nikolaus 2024-02-07

I recently purchased this car from my sister, who had bought it as is. Unfortunately, she had a difficult time getting it to pass emissions and had to have the front brakes and numerous belts changed. Despite barely driving it for a year, the car has had several issues since I acquired it, including problems with the CV boots, timing belt, 2 V-belts, rear brakes, alternator, rear muffler, pipe leading from exhaust manifold to cat converter, heater core, ignition switch, and rear left passenger window motor.

  1. Harold Erdman 2024-10-01

I am the proud owner of a Passat Cl 1.6td since 2002, and despite the car being from the year 1922, it has never let me down. With 312000 KM on the clock, it has only needed changes of oil, filters, and some belts to prevent end Diesel. Admittedly, it's not the most exciting car to drive, but it's perfect for long journeys as it doesn't leave you feeling tired when you stop. The construction is of a very high standard, without any annoying rattles or other noises (unlike some of my friends' newer cars which have lots of noises due to their construction and plastics). It has excellent drivability and is very cheap to maintain.

  2. Dejon Braun 2024-06-18

The 1992 model of this car may not be the most reliable option. Although I initially fell in love with its excellent handling, it unfortunately caused a significant dent in my wallet. I experienced issues with oil leaks, the cooling system, heating system, dashboard malfunctions, air conditioning system failures, and powered windows that stopped working. I would not recommend considering this model. It can be expensive to repair and not every mechanic is familiar with it. It may be helpful to obtain a good manual and special tools for changing parts, or to take it to a VW dealer for repairs.

  3. Jonathon Gulgowski 2024-05-02

I bought my 91 Passat 5spd when I was just 16 years old, and it had 192k on the odometer. Over the next year and a half, I managed to get it up to 212k. I'm not sure what the review '91 Passat breaks more than it works by Richie' was talking about, because I found the stereo to be the easiest out there. The factory stereo uses the same 'DIN' and overall dimensions as ANY aftermarket stereo, so they just slide right in. In my opinion, this Passat (2.0L DOHC 16Valve) was the best car I've ever owned, even compared to my '93 Saturn SL2 auto (1.9L DOHC), '91 Ford Crown Victoria (5.0L V8), '94 Pontiac Grand-Am (quad-4) auto, '85 Cutlass Supreme (V6) (pimp ride), and '88 Lincoln Towncar (5.0L V8) (fully optioned w/ sunroof).

  4. Jaime Olson 2024-04-26

It's amazing how attached I am to my car, even after owning it for over a decade! It's definitely one of my all-time favorites to drive, and it still performs great even with the a/c on. I remember how impressive it was driving in the mountains. Although I had some trouble with the fuel system, which was quite costly, and the timing belt broke, I'm currently in the process of getting it back into good driving condition. I replaced the motor with another one from a Passat I purchased and even changed over the a/c, which was ice cold until I let the car sit. Overall, I'm excited to get it back on the road and enjoy driving it once again!

  5. Marcellus O'Hara 2024-04-10

Hey there! This car is actually eleven years old, but if you're looking for something with a bit more personality than your average Honda or Toyota, a VW might be just the thing for you. Just a friendly heads up, though - if you're considering an automatic transmission, it might be best to steer clear, as they have a tendency to fail. On the other hand, the manual transmission is known for being incredibly reliable. And if you do decide to go for it, be sure to change the timing belt and tensioner as soon as possible. Happy driving!
