1999 Volkswagen Passat problems
The Volkswagen Passat is a nameplate of large family cars (D-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen since 1973. It has been marketed variously as the Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat, with varying body styles such as saloon, estate, and hatchback.
A "four-door coupé" variant of the Passat with a lower roof was released in the North American market in 2008 as the Passat CC, which was then renamed to Volkswagen CC. The CC was succeeded by the Arteon in 2017.
In January 2011, Volkswagen introduced a separate Passat model line, internally designated "Volkswagen New Midsize Sedan" or NMS, that was manufactured in the US at the Chattanooga assembly plant and in China at Nanjing by SAIC-Volkswagen. Developed to increase Volkswagen sales in North America, the Passat NMS is larger and cost less to produce. sold in the North America, South Korea, China, and Middle East. The separate B8 Passat model entered production in Europe in 2014, based on the MQB platform.
In 2019, the Passat NMS program was split into two as the North American one continued being produced on an older platform while the Chinese Passat moved on to the MQB platform, which resulted in Volkswagen marketed three models under the Passat nameplate globally at that time. The North American Passat was discontinued after the 2022 model year.
Volkswagen ended the production of the saloon Passat for the European market in 2022. The B9 Passat, released in 2023, is only available in an estate body style. The Passat continues to be available as a saloon in China.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-28
- VIN: WVWPD63B5XE
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: Just as I parked, the explosive seatbelt retractor for the rear passenger seat activated. There was a loud pop from the charge and the plastic seatbelt alignment clip flew off, and smoke came out from around the seatbelt. Had the vehicle been in motion there would have been a very serious safety hazard from the distraction, and if someone was in the back, there was the clip that flew off that could have struck them. No one was in the seat at the time of the incident. The seatbelt is now stuck in the retracted position. The component has not been inspected. There were no warning lamps before or after the failure. The climate control system does have an error and is not cooling. The error is for the A/C pressure sensor, so it does not seem related. I do have an appointment for the climate control system, so I can have the component inspected by the service center. Ambient temperature was approx 85F at the time of the incident. The sunroof was set to vent position while driving, and the climate control system fan was operating so interior temp should have been around 85F as well.

- VIN: WVWPD63B2XE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: AFTER STARTING AND BEGINNING MOTION THERE'S A SLOWING IN MOTION AS THOUGH THE BRAKES HAD BEEN SLIGHTLY TAPPED OR AS THOUGH THE ABS HAD TOLD THE TRANSMISSION COMPUTER TO SLOW DOWN. GAS CONSUMPTION WAS 16MPG. AFTER SEVERAL YEARS ONE TECH LISTENED TO ME, ADJUSTED THE 'FEEDBACK' FROM ABS TO THE TRANSMISSION MODULE COMPUTER AND THE SENSATION OF BRAKED SLOWING WAS GONE! AND THE GAS CONSUMPTION BECAME 19MPG! SEVERAL YEARS LATER MY DOOR LOCKS SHORTED OUT AND HAD TO BE REPLACED AFTER DESTROYING TWO BATTERIES. THE TECH THEN REPORTED THAT HE HAD REPROGRAMMED THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM TO 'FACTORY SPECS' AT THAT POINT THE 'SLOWING (BRAKED)' PROBLEM RECURRED AND THE GAS CONSUMPTION DROPPED BACK TO 16 MPG. HOW CAN I GET THE CAR READJUSTED TO GET RID OF THE 'SLOWING' PROBLEM AND RETURN TO 19MPG GAS USAGE??? [XXX] , [XXX] MY DEALER IS :CARTER VOLKSWAGEN,SEATTLE, WA MY E-MAIL IS [XXX]. VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-02-19
- Fire: 1
- VIN: WVWPD63B9XE
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: PASSAT BEGAN TO ACCELERATE UNDER NO PRESSURE TO PEDAL. PASSAT STARTED TO ACCELERATE FAIRLY SLOWLY BUT STEADILY AT FIRST, THEN IT INCREASED. IT WASN'T POSSIBLE TO DECELERATE/NO PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL STOPPED THE ACCELERATION. IT BEGAN TO REACH AN UNSAFE SPEED THEN I BEGAN TO DOWNSHIFT AND TO APPLY THE BRAKE IN SEQUENCE TO SLOW THE PASSAT, THEN I TRIED TO SLOW THE VEHICLE TO COAST IT ONTO THE SHOULDER, BUT THE SPEED REMAINED TOO HIGH TO HALT THE CAR. HAVING NO OTHER WAY TO SLOW THE VEHICLE, I STARTED TO DOWNSHIFT AND TO APPLY EXTREME PRESSURE TO THE BREAKS, AND WAS ABLE TO SLOW THE VEHICLE ENOUGH AFTER SEVERAL MILES OF DOWNSHIFTING AND RIDING THE BREAKS TO REACH A POINT AT WHICH I COULD SHIFT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL, THEN BEGAN COASTING IT UP A LONG DRIVEWAY WHILE THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RACE AND REV. I THEN DROPPED THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL AND ENGAGED THE EMERGENCY BREAK, THEN FORCED THE TRANS INTO PARK AND SHUT THE PASSAT OFF. THE FRONT BREAKS WERE BOTH GLOWING, WITH THE DRIVER'S SIDE HAVING BURST INTO FLAMES AS A RESULT OF THE FRICTION AND HEAT FROM HAVING RIDDEN THEM FOR SEVERAL MILES. SHOP THAT EXAMINED THE PASSAT ASSESSED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY CONTROL MODULE HAD FAILED AND WASN'T COMMUNICATING WITH THE MAIN ON-BOARD COMPUTER, AND THAT THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM HAD BEEN SEEN BEFORE ON OTHER VOLKSWAGEN MODELS OF THE SAME ERA. TECHNICIAN INDICATED THAT THIS WAS THE THIRD TIME THAT HE'D SEEN THIS FAILURE. IT APPARENTLY USUALLY RESULTS IN THE CAR COMING TO A STOP ALTHOUGH THERE ARE OTHER CASES CUSTOMERS REPORTED THAT RESULTED IN THE UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION THAT I EXPERIENCES. THE BREAKS AND OTHER INTERNAL COMPONENTS WERE SIGNIFICANTLY DAMAGED AS A RESULT OF THE ACCIDENT/THROTTLE BODY FAILURE, AND THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE SCRAPPED. SOMEONE SHOULD RESEARCH THIS FURTHER AS THIS IS A POTENTIALLY FATAL ISSUE. PLEASE CONTACT ME IF ANY FURTHER INFORMATION IS REQUIRED TO INVESTIGATE. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-09-13
- VIN: WVWNA63B0XE
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: MY 1999 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT HAS BAD IGNITION COILS. MY SON WAS DRIVING THE PASSAT. WHEN HE GOT HOME FROM SCHOOL HE INFORMED ME THE CAR WAS SLUGGISH AND THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS BLINKING. I WENT OUT AND DROVE IT TO SEE WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT. I NEVER IN MY WILDEST DREAMS WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT IF I DROVE IT, IT COULD CATCH FIRE. IT DIDN'T. I WAS TOLD THAT AFTER THE DISCOVERY OF BAD COILS. THAT WAS WHEN A FAMILY FRIEND LOOKED AT IT AND TOLD ME THAT IT HAD BAD IGNITION COILS. FORTUNATELY SCHOOL IS ONLY A MILE AWAY. I WAS TOLD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO MY NEAREST DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR (EACH COIL COSTING OVER $100 TO REPLACE - NOT INCLUDING LABOR) BECAUSE THE ENGINE COULD CATCH FIRE IF I DROVE IT. I CHECKED ONLINE AND I SEE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS. I SAW VW IS DOING A VOLUNTARY RECALL BUT ON 2001-2007. WHEN I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO FIND OUT HOW MUCH THIS WAS GOING TO COST ME THEY EVEN TOLD ME THEY RECOMMEND REPLACING ALL 4 (IT IS A 4 CYL) BECAUSE IF EVEN ONE IS BAD, THE OTHERS WILL FOLLOW. THIS IS NOT JUST ME. THIS IS HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE WITH THE SAME YEAR SAME MODEL AS MINE. ALL SHOULD BE REPLACED BY THE DEALERSHIP AS WELL AS THE IGNITION PACK. THAT HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FROM PEOPLE AS WELL. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS CAR MANUFACTURE CAN PUT PARTS OUT THERE THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED POTENTIAL HARM TO MY SON. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT. AND THEY WANT ME TO GO IN AND PAY FOR ALL OF THIS, WHEN THEY PUT THOSE BAD PARTS IN THE CAR. *TR

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your car! It sounds like you do a lot of driving for work, so it's great that you're getting such good highway mileage - 28 to 30 MPG is really impressive. And I agree, the Passat is a very good-looking car. It's great to hear that the leather seats are holding up well, too. Just remember to keep good tires on it and you should be good to go! :)

I've read a lot of Passat reviews both before and after purchasing my '99 Passat V6 with a 5-speed manual transmission. I absolutely loved the car then, and I still do now. However, I do agree with others that they can be quite expensive to maintain, with lots of fixes needed in the last three years. Currently, my Passat has 130k miles on it, and I'm considering purchasing another one. I'm really interested in moving up to a 2007-2008 4Motion Passat, but I'm hesitant because of the fixes I've had to perform in the past. I'm wondering if they'll happen again, or if the newly redesigned vehicle is more reliable with a better engine design that will require fewer fixes from 90k miles and up. I still love the design of the Passats, and I would be thrilled to have AWD traction and an automatic transmission.

So, I bought my 99 Passat gls 1.8l turbo a few months ago and I have to say, I love this car! It runs great and I haven't had any problems with it. While it's not super efficient on gas, it's still okay. I've had so much fun with this car, from drifting to putting the pedal to the floor, and it still runs like a dream. I really do love this car!

I moved up to the Passat from a Saturn SC2 when I decided I needed a more 'grown-up' car. I have really enjoyed driving it, but I must say, this car saved my butt thanks to the 4MOTION. I was knocked across a highway median by a van and managed to stay under control until I came to a stop. After reviewing the accident scene, the CHP officer offered me a job! He couldn't believe how well I had stuck to the road. Although I probably won't keep this one when my lease is up, I'm sure to get another.

The Passat is my first experience with something other than a Japanese car in 14 years. Maintenance has been a breeze for the past four years, with just oil changes every 3,500 miles, brakes and tires at 45,000 and 90,000 miles, and gas every now and then. The best part is that it's still so much fun to drive! I'm really happy I went for the 5 speed stick instead of the automatic. I plan on keeping the car until my oldest gets his license (about 5 more years). I might be an optimist, but this car still brings out the 20 year old in me (even though I'm 42 now).

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car. Overall, it's been pretty good compared to some others I've heard about. Unfortunately, the timing belt tensioner pulley failed at 84k, but thankfully VW rebuilt the top end under warranty. Since then, I've been changing it at 75k and have had no issues. I did have to replace the control arms at 135k and the ignition module at 140k, and my cruise control stopped working at 170k. Additionally, the driver's window operation can be a bit erratic at times. However, it still doesn't burn any oil, the clutch is still tight, and the car is very solid with only one or two rattles. Plus, I still get 30 mpg on the highway! I plan to keep running it until the wheels fall off. Let me know if you have any questions!

I will never buy a VW vehicle again. I purchased this car three years ago, and since then, it has experienced frequent breakdowns due to various electrical and mechanical issues. It is disappointing that Volkswagen would sell such unreliable vehicles. I recommend reading other reviews before considering purchasing a VW.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my sister's Passat. While it's a decent car to get you from point A to B, I did have a few issues with it. The car sits quite low to the ground, which unfortunately caused some damage to the oil pan when I went over a speed bump. It took a few attempts to fix, but eventually it was resolved (although it did cost $800 to replace). Additionally, there were a few broken accessories in the car which made it feel a bit cheap. Overall, it's a good car for everyday use, but just be mindful of the low clearance. Let me know if you have any questions!

I have unfortunately had a negative experience with this vehicle. The first Wagon sold in Oklahoma, it has had a number of mechanical problems, including issues with electronic sensors which have been costly to replace. At 82000 miles, I had to replace the timing belt and make other repairs, costing $1200.00. Currently, all cylinders are misfiring and another electronic sensor needs to be replaced, costing $800.00. Additionally, the timing chain behind the cam came loose and chewed up the plastic shield, resulting in a shrill sound when running. The cost to replace this is $1100 plus. While I understand that taking it back to the dealer would have been more expensive, I am disappointed with the overall performance of this vehicle. I am considering selling it after repairs are made and replacing it with an American-made car. Thank you for your understanding.

I bought this car last year at an auction and fell in love with it the moment I saw it. After taking it for a drive, I knew I had to have it. Although I expected to fix a few things since I bought it at a low price from an auction, I was surprised to find out that the car needed eight ball joints replaced, among other things. I managed to get the money to fix it and found someone to do the job, but unfortunately, I'm having trouble finding the necessary parts. It's frustrating that parts for this car are so hard to come by, and it's made me hesitant to consider buying another VW in the future.
