2007 Volkswagen Passat problems
The Volkswagen Passat is a nameplate of large family cars (D-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen since 1973. It has been marketed variously as the Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat, with varying body styles such as saloon, estate, and hatchback.
A "four-door coupé" variant of the Passat with a lower roof was released in the North American market in 2008 as the Passat CC, which was then renamed to Volkswagen CC. The CC was succeeded by the Arteon in 2017.
In January 2011, Volkswagen introduced a separate Passat model line, internally designated "Volkswagen New Midsize Sedan" or NMS, that was manufactured in the US at the Chattanooga assembly plant and in China at Nanjing by SAIC-Volkswagen. Developed to increase Volkswagen sales in North America, the Passat NMS is larger and cost less to produce. sold in the North America, South Korea, China, and Middle East. The separate B8 Passat model entered production in Europe in 2014, based on the MQB platform.
In 2019, the Passat NMS program was split into two as the North American one continued being produced on an older platform while the Chinese Passat moved on to the MQB platform, which resulted in Volkswagen marketed three models under the Passat nameplate globally at that time. The North American Passat was discontinued after the 2022 model year.
Volkswagen ended the production of the saloon Passat for the European market in 2022. The B9 Passat, released in 2023, is only available in an estate body style. The Passat continues to be available as a saloon in China.

Common 2007 Volkswagen Passat problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Volkswagen Passat 2007, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Engine Misfires:
- Problem: The engine occasionally misfires, leading to sputtering, jerking, and power loss while driving.
- Solution: This issue is typically caused by a damaged ignition coil, worn ignition wire, or a faulty spark plug. Owners should carefully inspect these components for damage and replace any faulty parts promptly.
- Stalling and Lost Engine Power:
- Problem: The Passat may stall frequently, have difficulty starting, backfire occasionally, and experience sudden periods of low power.
- Solution: This problem is often due to insufficient charge reaching the spark plugs. Owners should check the connections, clean if necessary, and if the issue persists, replace the faulty cam follower.
- Child Lock Doesn't Stay On:
- Problem: The child lock for the rear seats disengages without warning.
- Solution: A faulty locking mechanism is usually the cause. Owners need to replace the entire locking mechanism with the correct replacement part to ensure the child lock functions properly.
- Water in Cab:
- Problem: Water accumulates in the rear footwells, causing water damage to the front seats.
- Solution: For Passats built between November 2015 and May 2017, water damage and build-up may be due to incorrectly sealed sunroof trim. Owners should order replacement seals and follow online guides to reseal the sunroof trim effectively.
- Low Torque While Driving:
- Problem: Owners may experience low torque while driving.
- Solution: This issue could be related to various factors, including engine performance or transmission problems. Owners should have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic to diagnose and address the root cause of the low torque issue.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-29
- VIN: WVWEK73C57P
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I am filing a complaint in regards to Volkswagen failing to offer a solution to repair the Takata airbag which was recalled. I have tried contacting VW numerous times over the past two years as I live in Juneau, Alaska, which is landlocked and the only option is to send the vehicle on a ferry to either Anchorage or Seattle, WA to have this repair completed. The vehicle has not been driven in years due to the fear of what could happen if there were an accident and the airbag deployed. Please help me resolve this issue as Volkswagen is not taking action on this.
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-20
- VIN: WVWLK73C17E
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The timing belt is terrible on this vehicle. This is the same model and engine as the last recall but mine didn’t qualify because it is a 2007 not a 2008. The belt is and chain are completely unstable and prone to catastrophic failure that can happen anytime while driving especially on the highway. This could cause a huge accident. There is also a major issue with the fuel pumps and the hoses. My fuel tank is leaking gas above 3/4 of a tank and can cause a severe fire even if someone dropped a lit cigarette under the car while I am driving.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-05-25
- VIN: WVWLK73C17E
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: To start off, this car has common failures of the High Pressure Fuel Pump Cam Follower. This poses serious risk of damage to the engine when the follower is blown throw and the car goes into limp mode and if this happens on road it could be catastrophic. There were no warnings that this was the issue besides researching videos on YouTube while getting a fuel pressure code to find out the cam follower was completely blown throw which means my engine has MANY METAL pieces inside of my engine. If I did not catch this soon the next failure would’ve been the CAMSHAFT. The camshaft going bad at and given moment could also be catastrophic on the road and possibly even spark a fire. Another issue is with the timing chain on specific FSI engines. If this chain snaps mid drive then your engine could potentially blow in the middle of the road causing an accident. This problem is known by Volkswagen and they have yet to take serious action in regards to this safety hazard. Another potential for catastrophic events is the wiring harness specifically the one that runs under the Vacuum pump. These wires are covered in oil from the vacuum pump being prone to leaking and any fluid that goes on top of it. I also discovered that near my ECU to that wiring harness there was a spot of gasoline in which I was able to determine when I smelt the fluid with a glove on of course. This year make and model of Volkswagen can cause serious harm to those driving ESPECIALLY on the high way. The wiring harness and all components around it soak with oil and when you take off the manifold fuel also gets all over it even when you try to prevent it as much as you can. This has caused increased idle in my vehicle while driving with and EPC light that makes the car stall out of no where. If it happened when I was turning my wheel it could’ve caused an accident on the road or even a driver to have road rage behind me. Please help myself and fellow Passat owners of this year stay safe.
POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-20
- VIN: WVWLK73C17E
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The brakes totally went out on my vehicle with no warning. It first started when I bought the car, the brake pad (almost brand new) almost set my left front rotor on fire within 10 minutes of driving. If I didn’t pull over there’s no question that my car would’ve set on fire. My fuel like was leaking heavily, and the emergency brake which is hydraulic wouldn’t even deploy. I could’ve gotten killed. There is also an extreme issue with the power train system. Completely unsafe.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-01

- Summary: THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DOES NOT WANT TO DOWNSHIFT. PER THE MANUFACTURER INSTRUCTIONS/OWNER MANUAL WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS NEW, THE OIL CHANGE FOR THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WAS NOT RECOMMENDED IN CONTRARY. THAT CHANGE IN FEW YEARS IN VW BOOKS BUT THE CONSUMERS WHERE NEVER INFORMED ABOUT IT. THE ISSUE STARTED WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD ABOUT 74000 MILES BUT IT WAS PAST THE NUMBER OF YEARS FOR THE POWER-TRAIN WARRANTY (PROBABLY 8 OR MORE). THE ISSUE HAPPENS WHEN A BRISK ACCELERATION OR GOING UPHILL AND MAINTAINING SPEED IS REQUIRED. WHEN ACCELERATING THE TRANSMISSION SHOULD DOWN SHIFT TWO GEARS FROM SIXTH TO FOURTH FOR EXAMPLE, THE TRANSMISSION BOGS DOWN AND THE WHOLE CAR SHAKES VIOLENTLY AND LOSSES SPEED. I'VE TRIED TO FIX THE ISSUE BY CHANGING THE TRANSMISSION OIL AT THE DEALER AND THAT WAS WHEN I FOUND OUT THAT THEY REVERS COURSE ON CHANGING FLUID FOR THE AUTOMATIC, HOWEVER THAT DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE AND VW DID NOT WANT TO FIX IT OR TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ISSUE.

Congratulations on your purchase! It sounds like you made a great choice with the 4Motion and sport package, which are hard to come by. Despite some initial repairs, it's great to hear that your vehicle has been reliable overall. While the sport package may be a bit firm for your liking, it's impressive how well it handles corners. Although there have been some minor electrical issues, it's reassuring to know that the car is solidly built. The V6 engine is powerful and the car is packed with impressive features. The wagon is spacious and roomy, making it a great upgrade from your previous Audi A4 wagon. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Congratulations on your new 2007 Passat Wolfsburg edition! It's great to hear that you took your time when purchasing a vehicle and found the Passat Wolfsburg to be the best choice. With only 6000 Wolfsburg models being made, you have a unique and special car. The German engineering truly makes a difference and the features of this family sedan are impressive. If anyone is lucky enough to find one available, they should definitely consider getting it!

The 2007 2.0T Passat Station wagon from VW is an excellent car. It is powerful, agile, and perfect for the Autobahn. Despite its affordable price, it looks and drives like a luxury car. This Passat comes with many standard features that are usually optional in other cars. It also has some very avant-garde features that make it stand out from the crowd. The Passat is definitely worth considering if you're in the market for a new car. Even the base model has all the safety, efficiency, comfort, and engineering features of a luxury vehicle. During my drive on the interstate in MD, I got an impressive 37 MPG on 87 fuel with the air conditioning running. The Tiptronic transmission with three modes (auto, sport, standard) makes it fast off the blocks. I'm very happy with my purchase and would buy a second Passat if I had a larger garage!

This is a well-designed car that strikes a great balance between safety, roominess, performance, practicality, and gas mileage. It has good acceleration, although there is a slight lag at speeds below 5 mph. Additionally, it offers loads of storage space. Overall, it's a much better option than driving a minivan.

I recently bought this vehicle after years of driving a mid-size SUV. I'm thrilled with its performance and fuel economy. Once you put the back seats down, there's plenty of room for cargo. The instrumentation is fantastic, and the stereo is great. Although I wish I had the option of XM instead of Sirius, I'm still very happy with my purchase. I'm looking forward to a long and beautiful relationship with my new Passat.

I purchased a Certified Pre-Owned car with 36k miles, but unfortunately, I have had some issues with it. I have had to bring it in for repairs at least 7 times, with 3 of those times occurring within the first 3 months of ownership. While it has been a bit of a hassle to have to take it to the dealer so frequently, I am grateful that the warranty has covered everything so far. However, it seems like as soon as one issue is resolved, another one pops up. The most recent issue is excessive oil consumption, which requires me to add 3 quarts in between 5k oil changes. I will have to submit a claim to VW to have it fixed, but I am hopeful that it will be resolved soon. Overall, it's a pretty car, but I do regret some of the issues that have come up.

I was really excited to special order this car back in 2006, hoping to get a stellar vehicle built in Germany. Although I got the German part of the equation, the car turned out to be a disappointment. On the night of delivery, I noticed an odd delay in acceleration, which persisted even after multiple visits to the dealer. However, after the regional VW rep was contacted, a software update was applied to the ECM, which improved the issue by about 35%. Overall, it was not the best experience, but I appreciate the efforts made to address the issue.

I really enjoy the performance and comfort of my 2007 Passat 2.0T Wagon with 6-speed, Luxury, Leather, and Bi-xenons. However, I have noticed some issues with the build quality after owning it for four months. There are broken welds in the roof and creaks, squeaks, and rattles throughout the dash and headliner. While I had read that VW's quality could be a little shaky, I was not expecting this level of poor quality. Perhaps I should have considered other options, but I am still grateful for the features that my Passat offers.

After spending almost $40,000 on this Passat, I must admit I am disappointed with the number of trim rattles it has. I used to own a 2002 Passat motion, which had a much better interior quality. However, I am hopeful that VW will improve their build quality in the future. For now, I will be exploring other options when it's time to replace my car in 2 years.

Although this 2007 Passat has had some issues, I have taken great care of it since purchasing it in 2007. Unfortunately, the engine died at 165000kms (102000 miles) and I had to replace it with another 2.0T from the salvage yard. Despite the VW dealer installing it, the engine still had some issues and ultimately died 6 weeks later. I am confident that with the right repairs and maintenance, this car can still be a reliable vehicle.
