Toyota Tacoma problems
The Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota since 1995. The first-generation Tacoma (model years 1995 through 2004) was classified as a compact pickup. The second generation (model years 2005 through 2015) and third generation (in production since 2015) models are classified as mid-sized pickups. The Tacoma was Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 2005.
As of 2015, the Tacoma was sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Bermuda, and the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia. Most markets across the world receive the Toyota Hilux in lieu of the Tacoma.
The name "Tacoma" was derived from the Coast Salish peoples' name for Mount Rainier in the U.S. state of Washington.

Toyota Tacoma 2023
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-15
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
- VIN: 3TMDZ5BN4PM
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: This vehicle has had judder issues since new when braking. It has been in the shop over 10 times for this issue with the last being this week. I conducted an internet search and see other new owners complaining about the same issue with no resolve. I was told I would be getting new rotors and when I picked my vehicle up from Toyota of Las Vegas on 10/24/24, however, they are only resurfaced, not new. They have been resurfaced 3 times, with the first being performed around 500 miles. With other owners having the same issue when the vehicle is still new, it has to be a defect in the original part. Even though my vehicle is under warranty, Toyota has yet to change this part out. It is a safey issue because it causes judder, sometimes severe while braking. Lastly, my vehicle was one of the first to have the welding debris recall issue. My issue started long before that recall. As you can see, my vehicle has lived in Toyota service centers since purchase and it's getting old. I hope you all can please help. Thank you.
Toyota Tacoma 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-22
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: 5TFSZ5AN1KX
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: The transmission cooling line in my 2019 Toyota Tacoma was never installed by an authorized repair shop following an accident. This critical component failure led to the transmission failing just 1.5 hours after I retrieved the vehicle from the shop. My safety was compromised, as the failure occurred while driving at highway speeds, without any warning lights or messages indicating an issue. The failure has been confirmed by the dealership (MotorWorld Toyota) currently inspecting my vehicle. The shop responsible for the initial repairs has taken liability for missing the installation of the transmission cooling line. My insurance company (GEICO) has been involved but is delaying total loss consideration. No warning lamps or messages appeared before or after the transmission failure, which is highly suspicious. This negligence has caused severe damage to a vital component of my vehicle, and I question the overall integrity of the repairs.
Toyota Tacoma 2009

- Summary: I just learned from my Mechanic that the Frame Corrosion is bad. The frame was inspected by Vanderstyne (now West Herr) Toyota on 06/20/2020. It passed the Inspection at that time, so they did not do anything. But within 4.5 years and only a little more than 6,000 miles driving since then - this corrosion shows up. I think the Toyota Specs for the Corrosion Inspection were not sufficient. Toyota should be held accountable for their negligence. I only have 72,900 miles on this Tacoma. I would have liked to keep it for another 5 years or so, but now I cannot and Toyota washed their hand when I contacted them.

Toyota Tacoma 2021
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-12
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-16
- VIN: 5TFDZ5BN7MX
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: When stopping vehicle (for instance, at a stop light), vehicle would stop normally when pressing the brakes, but after a few seconds, the vehicle would start forward again. The brake pedal would give way and press down further, stopping briefly before starting forward again - so I had to use the emergency brake or else vehicle would move into oncoming traffic. I consulted a mechanic, and it was diagnosed as a bad brake master cylinder. This vehicle has only 51,000 miles on it, being a 2021 model. The brake pads themselves were checked and they are fine. I replaced the master cylinder and it fixed the issue, but I wouldn't expect this unsafe condition to already be happening to this vehicle, especially this early in life. Toyota must have defective brake master cylinders.

This truck was an amazing vehicle. It made me fall in love with trucks and Toyotas. I fell in love with it after I learned how to drive a stick. I bought it with 60k miles and put 100k on it before its unfortunate end. It saved my life after colliding with a Grand Am. I never had to do any major repairs or anything else besides routine maintenance. It took all the abuse I gave it. It got me through a very bad winter back in 08. It even served as my home for a couple of months. I miss it dearly. I get emotional every time I think about it. I haven't had a decent car since...not even my 4Runner. If you have this car, hold onto it forever. It will never let you down.

This is the only truck I've ever had that has done everything I've asked of it. I bought it with 69,000 miles and after 5 years, I have just over 140,000. I have replaced the O2 sensors and cat converter outside of regular preventive maintenance. I routinely travel on minimum maintenance and backroads, 50 miles of highway per day for work, haul equipment and firewood, and utilize 4WD, etc. It handles extremely well regardless of conditions. The fuel mileage is higher than acceptable given the demands I place on this truck. The cab is tight even at 9-10 years old, with no rust. It's an outstanding truck! I don't have a family, but my dogs and I fit perfectly (not small dogs). Given the miles I drive for work and school, the weekend projects, and the dependability during inclement weather, I just love it!

Vehicle year: 2015
I've had four of these trucks before, and they've never failed to start or gotten stuck on the road, even with well over 500k miles on them. All I ever did was schedule oil changes. The '96 had a broken exhaust pipe donut, but it was fixed under warranty. The '15 had a dried-out A/C gasket, but that was also fixed under warranty at no cost. I deliver an average of 27k miles a year within a 15-mile radius, and while they used to fold up like an accordion even at 20mph in a frontal collision, I've learned to pay attention. The 2000 sustained $6k in repairs while the Ford I tapped only lost its rear bumper. As long as they offer the 6' bed with access cab, I won't buy another truck. When the cargo approaches 1000 lbs, the nose raises, but it doesn't bottom out, and I've even taken 1200 lbs by putting some of the boxes in the cab and driving at posted limits. I haul paper locally.

I've only had the Tacoma for a week, but I'm already impressed with its excellent design and quality. In comparison to my previous vehicle, a Mazda B3000 4x4 V6, which was essentially a rebranded Ford Ranger, the Tacoma is much more powerful, fun to drive, and has great traction in 4x4. The only downside is that it can be a bit noisy, but overall I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

I bought my Toyota at 118,000 miles, and after replacing a few things here and there, it still runs like new and looks great. It's been through mud and water up to the doors, but I haven't gotten it stuck yet! I'm planning to have it restored and maybe give it to my son. I really do love my truck!

Vehicle year: 2022
I have always dreamed of owning a Tacoma for over 20 years (or whatever they were called before Tacoma). Finally, I decided to take the plunge and ordered mine before it even arrived at the dealership. I drove all the way from Atlanta to Charleston, SC, to buy it. I was really excited to like it, to drive it for a long time, and to use it for the next stage of my life in a colder, more mountainous climate away from Georgia when I move next year. However, it didn't quite meet my expectations. I ended up trading it in after only 3 months and 5k miles (although I did get back just about what I paid for it, which was a definite plus with Tacomas). As far as looks go, I loved it. It was a rugged TRD Sport 4x4, one of the coolest looking trucks out there. I would only consider a Toyota. The new Frontiers look pretty cool, but the backseat is like sitting on an awkward concrete block. And the new Rangers and Colorados, LOL, I don't want to spend my life in the shop. So, moving on from the good part, its appearance.....Now the not so good. It's a bit noisy and underpowered. Only a few cars in my life have been automatics. I've driven mostly manuals, and I've driven so many that I have a good frame of reference for this review. This is the 2nd worst manual I've ever driven (#1 spot goes to the worst car I've ever owned, a manual 2016 Honda HR-V. OMG). Anyway, for a V6 with 270something horsepower and a 6-speed manual, this thing felt like it had no power. In order to get it moving, you had to press down hard on the accelerator (and watch the fuel efficiency meter on the touchscreen drop to single digits for a while). I was a bit scared to pull out of my neighborhood at times if cars were anywhere nearby, as I wasn't sure I'd make it. For a truck with this engine, it should feel stronger than this. It felt like I was constantly asking it for more power. A result of this was the loudness. Even once you got it going up to speed, like 75 on the interstate, it still had very pronounced engine noise up in the cabin. You might expect some insulation between the cabin and the engine compartment, but unfortunately there seems to be very little. While the seats are a little better than the previous generation, they are still not very comfortable. There is plenty of room for five passengers, but they might not be very comfortable for a long trip. The touchscreen is generally fine, but it can be quite slow to change over to whatever you select. There were times when I found myself yelling, 'C'mon!', waiting for it to switch to satellite radio, Bluetooth, or whatever. Finally, I would like to note that there is a break-in period that can be awkward if you buy the truck new. By the time I traded it at 5k miles (for a 2011 4runner, which I love and is super quiet), I think I had broken it in fairly well. But for the first several thousand miles, it was weird. All of the loudness and underpowered things I've mentioned above were even more pronounced during the break-in period. I was driving my daughter back to her college one night from a fun day at Cedar Point, and I felt so bad because she couldn't even nap on the ride back because of the noise, awkward shifting, and rough ride. So, if you want a dependable, cool-looking truck, the Tacoma certainly fits the bill, but be prepared to put up with a vehicle that has all of the above issues. Overall, it was simply not the fun, enjoyable experience I'd been dreaming of for upwards of 20 years.

Vehicle year: 2006
I've owned my 2006 for 7 years now and it has been a great car. It has been very reliable and I have had very few problems with it, especially compared to the GM's I used to drive. However, during my latest state inspection, it failed due to rusting on the frame. Unfortunately, this seems to be a common issue with many 05 & 06 Tacomas. I reached out to both the dealer and Toyota separately to address this issue, but unfortunately, Toyota's response was not what I was hoping for. Despite this setback, I still appreciate the good times I had with my Toyota and will continue to explore other options in the future.

I found the truck to be visually appealing with a great interior and high hopes for its reliability. However, during a long trip, I experienced discomfort in my backside and right foot, which was not the case in my wife's CRV. The seats in the Tacoma are notoriously hard and lack adjustability, which made the long trip fatiguing. Additionally, the accelerator required significantly more force than other vehicles I have driven, which added to the discomfort. As a result, I have decided that the Colorado may be a better fit for me, as I have had issues with GM trucks in the past.

It has come to my attention that Toyota is still selling the 2018 Tocoma despite a known computer problem with the fuel system. I recently purchased one and brought it back to the dealer with about 600 miles on it to complain about jerky acceleration and deceleration. The dealer informed me that there had been several complaints and that Toyota was aware of the issue, yet they continue to sell the vehicle. After contacting Toyota customer service and filing complaints with the NC Attorney Generals Consumer Protection Agency, I was informed that a service advisory was coming out sometime this fall (2018) to address the computer program problem. However, I later received a call from the local dealership stating that they had a remedy and I took it in for repair. Unfortunately, the problem still persists. Therefore, I would advise anyone considering purchasing a Toyota V6 to test drive it and check for rough acceleration. It is worth noting that Toyota has documented twice that the jerking problem between 45-65 is caused by the updated torque converter trying to lock up and is a characteristic of the new motor/transmission. So, please be aware of this before making a purchase.

I recently traded in my 2013 Tacoma double cab 6sp for this new vehicle, but unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with its pick up. At red lights, I have noticed that other drivers honk at me due to the lack of acceleration. Additionally, I have found myself frequently downshifting on hills where my previous vehicle would easily climb. Although I was informed that the new engine has more horsepower, I have yet to feel its full potential. However, I have since decided to switch to a Jeep Wrangler JKU Rubicon. Thank you for your understanding.
