The Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota since 1995. The first-generation Tacoma (model years 1995 through 2004) was classified as a compact pickup. The second generation (model years 2005 through 2015) and third generation (in production since 2015) models are classified as mid-sized pickups. The Tacoma was Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 2005.

As of 2015, the Tacoma was sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Bermuda, and the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia. Most markets across the world receive the Toyota Hilux in lieu of the Tacoma.

The name "Tacoma" was derived from the Coast Salish peoples' name for Mount Rainier in the U.S. state of Washington.

Common 2017 Toyota Tacoma problems

The 2017 Toyota Tacoma, a popular midsize pickup truck, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. These issues range from unusual noises to abrupt engine stalls, affecting the overall driving experience and reliability of the vehicle.

  • Faulty Automatic Transmission: Some Tacoma drivers have reported experiencing a faulty automatic transmission once the car has surpassed a certain high-mileage threshold, typically around 150,000 miles. This issue may cause the vehicle to have difficulty shifting properly, but the good news is that it does not necessarily require a complete replacement of the automatic transmission to fix the problem.
  • Premature Ball Joint Wear: Another commonly reported problem is the premature wear on the lower ball joints, which primarily affects the front suspension. This issue can make steering more difficult and reduce the vehicle's ability to self-center. In some cases, the worn and loose ball joints can detach from the suspension, causing a loss of control of the vehicle.
  • Faulty Starter: If the engine is not turning over, it is likely due to a faulty starter rather than an engine problem. Common symptoms of a bad starter include grinding noises when trying to start the engine, taking several tries to get the engine to turn over, and the engine not starting at all. Replacing a starter is generally more cost-effective and less time-consuming than dealing with engine repairs.
  • Failed Airflow Sensor: A failed airflow sensor can lead to issues with the engine's performance, such as rough idling, hesitation, and stalling. This problem can be caused by a variety of factors, including a dirty or clogged mass airflow sensor or a malfunctioning sensor itself.
  • Power Steering Leaks: Some 2017 Toyota Tacoma owners have reported leaks in the power steering system. These leaks can be slow and may not be immediately noticeable, but they can eventually lead to a loss of power steering assist and make it more difficult to turn the steering wheel.
  • Suspension Issues: Complaints about suspension problems, such as broken springs and wheel balance issues, have been reported by 2017 Toyota Tacoma owners. These issues can affect the vehicle's handling and ride quality, potentially leading to more significant problems if not addressed promptly.
  • Engine Electrical Issues: A small percentage of 2017 Toyota Tacoma owners have reported engine electrical issues, such as warning lights related to the engine or vehicle speed control system. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty sensors, wiring issues, or software glitches.

These common problems with the 2017 Toyota Tacoma, while not affecting all vehicles, can impact the overall driving experience and reliability of the truck. It is essential for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

  • VIN: 5TFDZ5BN3HX
  • Components: STRUCTURE,SEATS
  • Summary: Noticed that my floor is getting soaked for no reason. After bring my truck to Arlington Toyota I found out that is was the cabin pressure vent that was leaking. The cabin pressure vent is found between the truck bed and cab. They recalled the third break light in 2019 for leaking water into the cabin but Toyota won’t recognize this pressure vent as a recall which is also leaking water into the cabin. After pulling up all of the carpet I have black mold all under the carpet where my newborn baby was riding. Black mold is a huge health concern. Looking online this is a known issue with Toyota tacomas. My parts to fix this issue have been back ordered for two mths so far, still with no ETA on when they will be available. According to The service rep, I am one of nine people currently dealing with this same issue at Arlington Toyotas dealership alone. so no time frames have been provided. When I was quoted the 5800 to fix this issue they suggested I go through insurance. This seems to be a known issue with product quality and instead of recalling they are pushing it to insurance Companies. Seems to be a shady practice Toyota is pulling and no one is big enough to stop them.

This is an obvious safety risk as not only is oil/fluid dripping on to the brake pedal, if the master cylinder goes out the brakes could stop working completely. This component has been inspected and confirmed by a Toyota dealership and there are other examples of this same issue happening to other Tacoma owners. This issue has been recalled on 2018 Toyota Tacomas, however, the recall needs to be expanded to more years as it is obvious that other Tacomas are being effected.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-29
  • VIN: 3TMDZ5BN8HM
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2017 Toyota Tacoma double cab-V6 with 62K approx miles. On or around April 29th 2024, I was traveling in this truck when there was a sudden and complete loss of power, two check engine lights came on-The "trac off" light and the check engine light came on. I needed to pull over immediately for safety. I ended up driving the vehicle to the Toyota dealership in limp mode. The vehicle has sat at Tustin Toyota now for weeks with the Toyota dealership initially suggesting that a ACIS Flap broke off inside the intake manifold of the car. This was replaced and the vehicle is still providing the same alarms and still in limp mode. The initial fix(whihc did not fix the problem was a full replacement of the intake manifold). Now the dealer is suggesting that a piece(s) broke off the intake manifold and ended up inside the engine so now dealer is recommending and entire engine break down to attempt to further diagnose the situation. Again it looks to be a complete failuure of the ACIS system and the intake manifold. This problem has presented a EXTREME safety issue due to comp[lete loss for power initially then truck sits in LIMP Mode. Very dangerous!

POWER TRAIN,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-13
  • VIN: 5TFRZ5CN6HX
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The Tacoma still has only 10,000 original miles. We yearly replace the oil when we have our annual vehicle inspection. The truck has been trouble since the beginning. Early on I noticed when going downhill, the automatic transmission seems to slip when applying the gas. I have taken the truck back to the dealer in Kona to be told that it is not part of the rear end differential recall some years ago. I asked them to make a notation of this should the transmission or rear end differential fail in the future. Recently, we received an informational letter from Toyota regarding something about a possible faulty high pressure fuel pump. I made an appointment at the dealer and since I was there asked them for tire rotation, oil change and annual vehicle inspection. I explained to the service writer that I still believe there is a rear end or transmission problem. At first, she said, the recall was never done and later said it was done. More importantly, I have been smelling gasoline when I exit the truck although I see no visible fuel on the ground. I believe that this is related to the fuel pump issue which I received the letter from you. I was told several hours after I dropped off the truck that the fuel smell was not related to the letter I received.

My 2017 Tacoma has been leaking brake fluid on my floormat. I'm sure I am not the only one having an issue with this and because it involved the brakes it does pose a risk on the road If the brakes were to fail due to a Master Cylinder that again has been recalled with the 2018-19 Tacomas. Why not include the 2017 Tacomas as well?

Negative 2017 Toyota Tacoma car reviews

  1. Coy Price 2024-11-25

The power of the 7th Tacoma is severely lacking and the shifting is erratic. Unfortunately, I have experienced a loss of power on three separate occasions, and the dealership was unable to identify any issues the first time. I am currently seeking further assistance to address this recurring problem. On a positive note, I do appreciate the unique black and red interior design.

  2. Hilton Oberbrunner 2024-10-19

Consumer Reports named this truck the 'worst mid-sized truck' and unfortunately, my experience has been similar. I purchased a 2017 TRD Off Road V6 manual in November 2016 and have had a number of issues since then. These include stumbling/hesitation on acceleration, poor fuel mileage (less than 16mpg combined, without towing or hard driving), pinging/knocking/clutch shudder in first gear when cold, weak brakes even with upgraded rotors and pads, clutch pedal squeak, scratched instrument cluster, high pressure fuel pump whine, noisy windows, sound from gas pedal when under heavy acceleration on freeway, howling noise from rear differential, and now creaking suspension. Despite visiting local dealers almost two dozen times, they have been unable to fix anything and often claim that everything is normal or operating properly. While my experience has been frustrating, I hope that Toyota can address these issues in the future. Thank you for listening to my concerns.

Hey there! When I started shopping for a new vehicle, I wasn't really considering a mid-size truck. However, after doing a ton of research, I found that the Taco offered the best value for my money. Unfortunately, my 2007 Avalanche was stolen, so I had to start looking for a new vehicle. I was pretty biased towards the Avalanche, but after test driving some new GM's and Fords and seeing their cost, I decided to check out a used car lot. That's where I found a 2015 Tacoma TRD PRO that I really liked. Since the cost of the 2015 was only $4k cheaper than a brand new 2017 one, I went for the new one. After 4 months of ownership, I wanted to share my thoughts. First off, the truck is really good. It handles the daily commute really well, and the V6 has plenty of power to get out in front of traffic when merging. The off-road capability is incredible and really impressed me on some back country fire roads during my occasional fishing trips. I haven't used it yet, but I really like the peace of mind that the For some reason, the material in the car acts like velcro when you try to vacuum it up. However, this isn't a huge issue because duct tape works wonders for this task. Although it takes longer to clean out than my old vehicle, I'm still biased. My third gripe is with the seats. I've tried every setting they have, but I can't seem to get comfortable. It's almost like I'm between settings - either my back is too upright or I'm too laid back. Also, not being able to lower the seat causes me to bump my head on the roof on bumpy terrain. This is annoying, but not overly so. Toyota really needs to have a power seat function. For the money, you can't beat this truck's functionality, and of course, it holds its value really well. The amount of accessories you can get from both Toyota and 3rd parties is incredible, and they add even more functionality to a very capable and functional truck. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase.

The 2017 Tacoma may not be the most comfortable vehicle for those who are 6ft tall. The steering wheel cannot be adjusted to allow for comfortable entry and exit. Additionally, the headroom could benefit from being a couple of inches taller. The muffler can be quite loud and noisy inside the vehicle. While the acceleration from a stop may be sub-standard at times due to the six-speed transmission, the gas mileage has improved with age and mileage. Previously averaging 13, I now average 18 with 28000 miles on it. While the engine could benefit from a little more power and the towing capacity could be better, perhaps around 7000 to 7500, overall the Tacoma is a reliable vehicle.

This truck has had several issues that require frequent visits to the dealership. Despite the warranty, Toyota has been unresponsive in addressing these problems.

Positive 2017 Toyota Tacoma car reviews

Mileage: I have driven approximately 1100 U.S. miles to date and counting. As a previous Toyota owner, I can attest to the reliability and resale value of their vehicles. Toyota is the Gold Standard in these areas. I purchased this truck as a replacement for a previous lemon of a European vehicle that I had to get rid of quickly. Since I was short on time, I went with what I knew and trusted from my younger years: Toyota trucks. After reading reviews on this site and elsewhere, I decided to go with a manual transmission. I am extremely happy with my decision! The manual transmission is great, and although it may feel a bit You can embrace your masculinity and have superior control off-road or in inclement weather by removing the computer installed between you and the transmission. You can cast aside millennial stereotypes and comfortably blow past that big rig on the highway by downshifting to third. The manual has better low-end torque in first, and you'll know how to drive a rental car in countries besides the U.S. and Canada. The list of benefits just goes on and on. In fact, there are dissertations written about the advantages of a manual in any off-road vehicle, with many likely involving Toyota trucks as the subject of said dissertation. The only drawback is trying to find a manual, but that's a darn good drawback to have! If you have the patience, you can order exactly the truck you want and wait a couple of months. I bought a base model TRD off-road with only the tow package and a few minor accessories (rubber mats, etc.). The base model has the perfect amount of onboard technology.Bluetooth for hands-free phone, basic navigation that is easy to use, a simple touch screen infotainment system, and air conditioning and cruise control. The interior is nice, but not so nice that you have to worry about getting it a little dirty - after all, it is a truck! The vehicle controls, in true Toyota fashion, are logical and provide excellent tactile feedback. Having knobs on the radio is important, despite the opinion of one reviewer, as it allows you to turn up the volume without taking your eyes off the road. There are also steering wheel controls that serve this purpose. Knobs for climate control are equally important for safety reasons. In my opinion, there is nothing more dangerous than a driver having to take their eyes off the road to perform simple tasks such as adjusting the temperature or the volume on the radio. This little truck is solid and, so far, has exceeded my previously pleasant and satisfied Toyota truck experiences. While it won't be my daily driver for very long (again, this was an emergency purchase), I intend to keep this baby in the family for quite some time. I simply cannot imagine a better vehicle for a teenager to learn to drive in.

The engine has been a point of contention, so I'll keep this short. During normal everyday driving, you would never notice any issues, and by purchasing a manual transmission, I am not subject to the indecisiveness of an automatic. I do wish it had a little more low-end torque, and I also wish there was a supercharger/turbo option. Overall, I absolutely love the truck, and the off-road comfort is amazing without sacrificing on-road sensibility. As of May 2021, the truck is still going strong after 4 years with no major issues or irritations. I've taken it all over Nevada, on and off-road, with nary a complaint. Update Nov 17: I still love the truck, and there are no major issues to report. The only thing I need to follow up with the Service dept. is a noticeable humming when cruising in 4th gear as the accelerator is just being engaged/disengaged. Nov. 18: The Etune system does random reboots, usually when using Bluetooth audio and a call comes in. It's an irritation for sure, but I still love the truck. April. 19: Toyota fixed the issue with the Entune head unit in December, and it has been solid since. No other issues or concerns.

This truck has been fantastic in terms of handling, off-roading, and the amenities inside the cab. Although, my biggest concern is that it spends too much time gear searching, especially on the freeway. If this rig was a manual, it would be a 5-star rig across the board. It has sufficient acceleration off the line, but as soon as you get to about 30-35 MPH it lugs down. It seems to be geared towards fuel conservation. However, there is an option called the ECT (electronically controlled transmission) that you can push to eliminate some of that. But it still shifts up too fast. I just bought it 3 weeks ago, so I'm still getting used to it. Everything else about it is great. If you don't mind lousy gas mileage, you can always use the ECT. However, the combined fuel mileage has not been anywhere near 22.5. It's more like 17.5 city and 20.5 highway. Time at the pump sucks, but the rest of the truck makes it totally worth it.

I bought this vehicle to replace my 2010 Jeep Wrangler Sport with a 6-speed manual transmission. I opted for the Tacoma with a 6-speed manual transmission to have more control while driving on the beaches in Delaware for surf fishing. With only 500 miles on the odometer, the vehicle is getting an impressive 21 mpg. The performance, ride, handling, and quality are all outstanding. The 6-speed manual transmission is a big plus, as many reviews complain about the shifting and sluggishness of the automatic. I highly recommend buying the manual transmission. Toyota is at the forefront of safety and technology, and the Tacoma comes with a Qi Wireless charging pad built into the tray area in front of the floor shifter. I have an iPhone 6, so I purchased a Benzalel Latitude Qi Wireless Charger Case for my phone, and it works perfectly. If you have a Samsung, you should be able to wireless charge your phone in the Tacoma without having to buy a special case. The seating height of the front seats is not an issue for me, even though I am 6'1

I owned a Tacoma with an automatic transmission, but I felt that the transmission algorithm was not optimal. So, I decided to trade it for a manual transmission model and I am very happy with my decision. Overall, it's a great truck!
