2009 Toyota Tacoma problems
The Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota since 1995. The first-generation Tacoma (model years 1995 through 2004) was classified as a compact pickup. The second generation (model years 2005 through 2015) and third generation (in production since 2015) models are classified as mid-sized pickups. The Tacoma was Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 2005.
As of 2015, the Tacoma was sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Bermuda, and the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia. Most markets across the world receive the Toyota Hilux in lieu of the Tacoma.
The name "Tacoma" was derived from the Coast Salish peoples' name for Mount Rainier in the U.S. state of Washington.

Common 2009 Toyota Tacoma problems
The 2009 Toyota Tacoma has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most common issues is related to the radio. Many owners have reported that the radio turns on and off at random, which can be frustrating and annoying. This issue was not part of any recalls and does not seem to be related to the age of the truck. Even low mileage trucks have suffered from this problem, and the most common solution was for Toyota to replace the radios.
Another common problem reported by 2009 Tacoma owners is related to the suspension. Some drivers have reported that the suspension of the Tacoma either fails or becomes damaged after some use. This issue has led to at least one crash, but fortunately, no one was hurt. The suspension problem was the subject of a recall, and the cost to repair it varies, with estimates ranging from $500 to $1,200, depending on the part of the suspension that broke.
Additionally, many owners of the 2009 Tacoma have reported problems with the parking lights. The parking lights of the Tacoma sometimes overheat and crack, which can be a dangerous situation in low visibility conditions. This issue mainly affected owners of Tacomas that had more miles on them, with the average mileage of the Tacoma that suffered this issue being about 42,500 miles. The cost of repairing this issue is about $500, and it is believed to be due to a faulty design on Toyota's part.
Lastly, some 2009 Tacoma owners have reported that the accelerator pedal was recalled due to unintended acceleration issues. This recall was part of a larger issue that affected millions of Toyota cars, and the company paid hefty fines to the government and entered talks to settle hundreds of class-action lawsuits. The world's attention had turned to GM's ignition switch fiasco, but Toyota's problems with unintended acceleration were not entirely in the rearview mirror.
In summary, the 2009 Toyota Tacoma has several common problems, including issues with the radio, suspension, parking lights, and accelerator pedal. These issues have led to frustration, inconvenience, and even dangerous situations for some owners. While Toyota has issued recalls for some of these problems, others have not been addressed, leaving owners to deal with the issues on their own or seek repairs at their own expense.

- Summary: I just learned from my Mechanic that the Frame Corrosion is bad. The frame was inspected by Vanderstyne (now West Herr) Toyota on 06/20/2020. It passed the Inspection at that time, so they did not do anything. But within 4.5 years and only a little more than 6,000 miles driving since then - this corrosion shows up. I think the Toyota Specs for the Corrosion Inspection were not sufficient. Toyota should be held accountable for their negligence. I only have 72,900 miles on this Tacoma. I would have liked to keep it for another 5 years or so, but now I cannot and Toyota washed their hand when I contacted them.

- Summary: We recently went to have new tires put on the Tacoma at Costco. The Costco technician said that the frame was rusted and he had a similar problem with his Tacoma and Toyota repaired it. He told us that he couldn't install the new tires with the rusted frame and suggested that we go to our Toyota Dealer. We went to Toyota Direct in Columbus, Ohio (where we have had the vehicle serviced every time) and they took pictures of the rust and told us they would call us back. Although we have inquired several times, they had not called us back so we reached out to Toyota Corporate and they said that the recall/warranty extension had expired and there was nothing they could do. Costco has refused to install the new tires until the frame is repaired. (our problem is not with Costco.) The Costco tech did tell us that he was surprised that the rust had not been noticed before by the Dealer during regular service as it would not have appeared so quickly. So the complaint goes against Toyota Corporate and Toyota Direct... why did they not notice any rust while the warranty/recall was in effect or any of the service visits if this is a standard problem with 2009 Toyotas. If the vehicle has a rusted frame, that could be dangerous to whoever is driving the vehicle. In addition, without being able to have new tires installed due to the frame issue, that creates another safety concern with winter weather approaching and tires that need replaced.

- Summary: Just learned from CT Toyota dealer that my 2009 Toyota Tacoma frame has significant corrosion and that it's time to replace frame or vehicle. Very disappointed. Vehicle did go in for recall service on 12/7/17 and CRC spray was applied as frame was determined ok at that time. Looks like that didn't help much to prevent further corrosion less than 6 years later. Voicing my frustration over those that got new frames are still driving on road, while I have to retire my truck. Extending warranty to 12 years from date of first use clearly did me no help. Do I and others like this have any options?

- Summary: I have a 2009 Toyota Tacoma that has a significant amount of frame rust. I have recently learned that Toyota lost a class action lawsuit on this model of Tacoma because the frames would rot quickly. I was not aware of this recall, nor was I notified and because of that I missed the 12-year windows for Toyota to replace the frame. Toyota's Owner app made no mention of this either. The only recall that I received was an issue with leaf springs which I had corrected when the parts came in. I'd like to know what I can do to have my truck's frame replaced, or something comparable.

- VIN: 5TETX22N29Z
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: ODI #11516361 I bought this 2009 Toyota Tacoma with 20,990 miles on it on 11/22/2019. Then the pandemic hit the USA and the truck sat for many months. Then in April 2023 I brought the truck in for repairs and the mechanic told me the frame was rusted real bad and that the recall was past the deadline. I brought it to Toyota of Watertown Dealership on 4/07/2023 with 33,348 miles on it and they said there was nothing they could do because the truck was over the 12 years of manufacturing recall date. My truck was manufactured on 8/20/2009, so my recall ended on 8/20/2021. I owned the truck for 19 months during the recall and I never received a recall notice from Toyota. If I had known I would have had it inspected before the 12 years were up and Toyota would have been responsible for the rusted out frame. Toyota is negligent and liable for not informing me of the recall. Now I am stuck with a rusted out dangerous vehicle.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-05
- VIN: 5TETX22N49Z
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: My 2009 Toyota Tacoma is experiencing the same technical problems as recall 14V168000 and 12V092000. I call Toyota headquarters and they refused to examine my vehicle without paying the diagnostic fee even though my vehicle is exhibiting the exact same issue Toyota is recalling the truck. A mechanic examined the truck and stated the airbag is not active and will not deploy and advised to reach out to Toyota to have them examine it. Even though my truck is not on the recall list however it is exhibiting exactly what the recall is calling for and Toyota is failing to acknowledge it.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM

- VIN: 3TMLU42N09M
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Significant amount of rust and rot on multiple structural points of the truck’s frame. This deterioration has advanced much quicker than anticipated, compromising the structural integrity and safety of the vehicle. The rust and rot have affected crucial components of the frame, including crossmembers and suspension mounting points. I have entered my vin # multiple times in the past years to the Toyota frame recall webpage but I am continually denied frame replacement. I feel that the extent of rust and the time frame in which it occurred should allow for a manufacturer replacement or compensation.

I brought the truck on 4/07/2023 to a Toyota dealer and they said the recall for a new frame expired 12 years after the vehicle was purchased. I called Toyota and they told me the same thing. I had know idea that these trucks had frame rust issues when I bought it. I read that Canada received a 3 year extension to 15 years on Tacoma 2009 trucks with mileage under 36,000, I have only 33,000 miles. Please help!

- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: SUSPENSION:REAR:SPRINGS:LEAF SPRING ASSEMBLY:LEAF
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2005-2011 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner and 4x4 vehicles manufactured September 14, 2009, to October 11, 2010. In the affected vehicles, one of the leaf springs may fracture due to stress or corrosion. While being driven, the broken leaf could move out of position and contact surrounding components including the fuel tank, possibly puncturing the tank and causing a fuel leak.
- Consequence: If the fuel tank leaks fuel from being punctured, there is an increased risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners and dealers will install new rear leaf spring assemblies. The recall began on January 29, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2008-2014 FJ Cruiser and Tacoma vehicles equipped with accessory wheels and tires installed by Toyota or dealers prior to the vehicle's first sale. The affected vehicles may list incorrect spare tire size and/or cold tire inflation information on the tire placard. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims for Passenger Cars."
- Consequence: If the spare tire is inflated to the incorrect pressure provided on the placard, tire failure may occur while it is being driven on, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: For the involved vehicles, overlay stickers to correct the tire placard will either be mailed to owners or provided to dealers for placement over the incorrect information on the placard. The recall is expected to begin in September 2014. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006-2008 RAV4, 2006-2010 Yaris, 2008-2010 Highlander, and 2009-2010 Tacoma, Corolla, Corolla Matrix and General Motors Pontiac Vibe vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the steering column assembly contains electrical connections to the driver's airbag module housed in a spiral cable assembly, which includes a Flexible Flat Cable (FFC). Due to the shape and location of the FFC's retainer, the FFC could become damaged when the steering wheel is turned.
- Consequence: If the FFC is damaged, connectivity to the driver's air bag module could be lost and the air bag deactivated. The failure of the driver's air bag to deploy in the event of a crash that typically necessitates deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify the Toyota vehicle owners, and General Motors will notify the Pontiac Vibe owners. Toyota sent owners an interim notification letter in May 2014 to advise owners of the recall. Toyota will mail owners a second letter when remedy parts are available. General Motors sent Pontiac Vibe owners an Interim letter on June 20, 2014 notifying them that parts are currently unavailable. General Motors sent notices to the Pontiac Vibe owners on September 15, 2014, that a remedy is available. The recall began on October 27, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-762-2737.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Tacoma Access Cab vehicles manufactured September 14, 2004, through March 29, 2010; and model year 2011 Tacoma Access Cab vehicles manufactured July 1, 2010, through September 7, 2011. If the access doors are repeatedly and forcefully closed, the screws that attach the seat belt pre-tensioner to the seat belt retractor can loosen over time. If the screws loosen completely, the seat belt pre-tensioner and the retractor spring cover could detach from the seat belt retractor.
- Consequence: If the seat belt pre-tensioner detaches from the seat belt assembly, the seat belt pre-tensioner will not perform as designed, increasing the risk of injury in a severe crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the seat belt assemblies. Based on the inspection, the seat belt assembly will be replaced or new pre-tensioner screws will be installed with thread-locking sealant and a retractor spring cover with stopper ribs to prevent loosening of the screws. These services will be provided at no cost to the owner. The recall began during February 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
- Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
- Consequence: If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
- Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

I recently purchased a Toyota truck based on my son's positive experience with his 06 model. I opted for the TRD package and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed with my first Toyota vehicle. As a long-time Honda fan, I was hesitant to switch brands, but this truck is incredibly well-built and an absolute joy to drive.

I noticed that the transmission of my Taco was responding poorly after only 2 days of use. Specifically, when making a left or right turn and slowing down, the motor revs and if I try to accelerate, even gently, the engine revs up to 2K before clunking into second. This has left me stopping mid-turn before pulling away, which I believe is a dangerous design flaw that could result in someone being T-boned or killed someday. Other than that, the truck is pretty decent. Although some of the interior plastic is a little cheap, it's a truck, so it's not a big deal.

1. On fourth radio!Replaced under warranty, all.Radio would turn on, on it's own, turn off on it's own, wouldn't turn on at all and would not shut off when needed.Toyota radio's can have issues.Talking with lady today who I shared shuttle bus home from Toyota (more on that down page) and she too experienced problematic stereo system in her Toyota.2. Steering linkage boot torn underside of truck which apparently needed whole steering assembly be replaced not just boot cover. This also under warranty.3.Reason for this report?Truck is an '09, with 57,000km on it and is now in shop for a new starter! No warranty left, $500 bill coming up!

After owning several cars, including a Honda Pilot and Volvo XC70, I finally decided to buy another Toyota. I wanted a truck with good cargo carrying capacity, but not something too big. However, it seems like all trucks have become bigger over the years. The '09 Tacoma is even bigger than the '00 Tundra I owned. I didn't get a 4X4 to save on purchase and fuel costs. As usual, Toyota has great fit and finish, and the car feels solid. Although, compared to the Honda Pilot, it's not as well-engineered. For example, the center console storage compartment opens from the driver's side instead of the front, which would allow better access for front passengers. It's not as clever on storage.

This Toyota is a nice truck with good extras, but I expected more for the price given Toyota's track record of excellent and dependable vehicles. The low RPM rattle/vibration and transmission downshifting issues are areas for improvement. As a confident Toyota owner, I trust that these issues can be resolved and look forward to enjoying a smoother driving experience.

I would definitely recommend getting an extended cab over a regular cab. The seat adjustment is very poor for the bench seat in the regular cab. It would be better to have individual seats instead of the bench seat.

The vehicle may be a bit larger than expected for a compact/midsize, and some drivers have reported noise from the clutch fan and other mechanical components. Unfortunately, the base model does not offer an alloy wheel option. The truck sits a bit high for street driving without a rear sway bar, but it still handles well. While some drivers may not find ATRAC to be worth the investment, the ABS system performs as expected. With a little more attention to fuel efficiency, Toyota could improve the mileage of this vehicle. Overall, the body of the truck looks great. Although some drivers have experienced issues with the TPMS and radio, these problems can be resolved by a Toyota dealer. It's worth noting that Toyota is aware of the radio issues and is taking steps to address them.

The TRD Sport SB could benefit from some adjustments to the seat height and thigh angle, as taller individuals may find it difficult to get comfortable on longer trips. Additionally, the tailgate could be sturdier and the rear leaf springs could be stronger. While the backup camera may not be necessary for some, it is still a useful feature for many drivers. The seat fabric could also be improved to match the quality of the Tundra. It would be great to see better mileage from this vehicle. The center dash and radio could be of higher quality, and a trip computer for real-time mileage would be a helpful addition. The colors and digital displays could also be made easier to read in bright sunlight. While the doors may feel a bit flimsy, the TRD Sport SB still offers great value for its price point. Overall, it's a solid choice for those in the market for a mid-size pickup truck with some room for improvement.

The 09 SR5 4x4 CC with automatic transmission has some design flaws that can cause the vehicle to drop into low gear and race the engine. This can be both dangerous and maddening. We understand how frustrating this can be and we would like to help you find a solution to this issue.

Cheap truck. The bed is made of plastic and the frame rails and suspension components are unboxed, which may not be up to the standards of domestic trucks. There is a lot of plastic in the interior, which may not be to everyone's liking. Perhaps considering the Dakota or a 1/2 ton domestic would have been a better option. It is worth noting that there have been some recalls for throttle and rusty frame issues. However, it is important to keep in mind that Toyota is a reputable brand and has a lot to offer.
