2014 Toyota Tacoma problems
The Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota since 1995. The first-generation Tacoma (model years 1995 through 2004) was classified as a compact pickup. The second generation (model years 2005 through 2015) and third generation (in production since 2015) models are classified as mid-sized pickups. The Tacoma was Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 2005.
As of 2015, the Tacoma was sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Bermuda, and the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia. Most markets across the world receive the Toyota Hilux in lieu of the Tacoma.
The name "Tacoma" was derived from the Coast Salish peoples' name for Mount Rainier in the U.S. state of Washington.

Common 2014 Toyota Tacoma problems
The 2014 Toyota Tacoma is a dependable and reliable vehicle, but like any other car, it has its share of common problems reported by its owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Excessive oil consumption: A few owners have mentioned that the 2014 Toyota Tacoma engines consume more oil than other trucks. This problem usually manifests around 40,000 miles. While some owners simply check the oil regularly and add oil as needed, others have opted to replace some gaskets for around $500.
- Broken transmission sensors: Some Tacoma models exhibit transmission sensor issues, causing improper shifting between gears or cruise control failure around 55,000 miles. Replacing the transmission sensor resolves the problem, costing around $550.
- Recalls: The 2014 Toyota Tacoma has four recalls, which is better than other trucks from the same year. The most serious recall affects 3,795 trucks and covers the valve springs in the engine. Toyota will replace the valve springs for free.
- Transfer case oil seal, coolant temperature sensor, and hood latch replacement: As the 2014 Toyota Tacoma ages, it may require the replacement of the transfer case oil seal ($425), the coolant temperature sensor ($400), and the hood latch ($120). These are typical maintenance costs for high-mileage vehicles.
- Low-mounted seats: Some owners have noted that the low-mounted seats in the 2014 Toyota Tacoma are not ideal for comfort, which can be a concern for taller drivers or those seeking a more comfortable driving experience.
Despite these common issues, the 2014 Toyota Tacoma is known for its strong resale value, convenient size, and many different configurations. Its standard touchscreen and strong resale value are among its strengths, making it a good value for those in the market for a dependable and reliable truck.

- Summary: My 2014 Toyota Tacoma is experiencing paint chipping in large sections on multiple sections of the vehicle. Primarily this can be seen on the passenger side doors near the windows. - Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: In the past two years my Tacoma has had to have the air switching valve replaced twice. Vehicle going into limp mode is not safe. Dealer tells me I need to drive it more than 5K miles a year. So I need to drive more to make an emission component work better? How does that even make sense.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-06
- VIN: 3TMLU4EN5EM
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Brake master cylinder is leaking into the cab, truck has 80k miles on it. OEM replacement part only available through Toyota dealer (Part number: 47050-04092) is INSANE at $1500. No warning indicators, just a puddle of brake fluid on my floor mat.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-20
- VIN: 5TFLU4EN8EX
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Horn will honk when steering wheel was turned to the right or left but could not get it to honk when the steering wheel was in the straight or normal position. Took to local Toyota Dealer and it was found that the Spiral Cable in the steering wheel was the cause and needed replaced so I had the dealer replace this Spiral Cable in the steering wheel which then fixed this issue. I found online that there were recalls and service bulletins on this issue, but it was for prior years and did not include my vehicle. I noticed that there are a lot of discussions and complaints online about this issue, so it seems that this is an ongoing problem.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-17
- VIN: 5TFNX4CN8EX
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I purchased this Toyota 3 years ago in Rochester NY, an incredibly snowy city that uses a lot of salt in the winter. I was living in Texas when I got informed about a recall about frame damage due to rust and corrosion. When I tried to get this taken care of I was told the dealership couldn’t do anything about it because it’s not in a cold climate state anymore. The frame is very rusted and seems to be very dangerous to drive. I find the lack of professionalism and disregard for my safety highly disturbing. Please let me know if there’s anything you can do to help get this resolved.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-24
- VIN: 5TFUX4EN8EX
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I received a notice from Toyota Motor Corporation that certain 2011-2017 Model Year Tacoma Vehicles should be brought in for a Frame Corrosion Inspection. Subsequent to this inspection, the dealership could recommend either an application of Corrosion Resistant Compound OR an entire Frame replacement. My vehicle's Frame was severe enough to qualify for replacement, BUT, the dealership indicated that the Fuel Tank Band holding the fuel tank in place was sufficiently rusted that it should be replaced to the tune of $421.58 If this item is a safety issue, I'd think it would be subject to recall and replacement. Please advise.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-22
- VIN: 5TFTX4CN5EX
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: I took my vehicle in to the dealer where I always have it serviced, and asked them to do a front end alignment, since it pulls slightly and I noticed a little uneven tire wear. The mechanic said the front suspension is too rusted to align. I took the vehicle to a tire shop recommended by the dealer service advisor, and they said it is extremely rusted and sprayed some penetrating oil on it. I posted some pictures online in a Tacoma forum and everyone thought the rust was excessive, especially for a southern California vehicle where the roads aren't salted. I am the original owner. Based on what I read in online Tacoma forums, excessive frame rust was a well documented problem for earlier years There is excessive rust and corrosion on the front frame, suspension and steering, preventing proper steering alignment as normal maintenance. The problem was originally identified by the dealer last month during a routine 5,000 mile oil change service; they never notified me about a problem in any previous service, and the problem was independently confirmed by a tire shop when I tried to have them perform a front wheel alignment. There are no warnings or symptoms, and the need for a front end alignment is due to normal wear and tear

My truck slid into the side of a big rig. Luckily nobody was hurt, but the failed ball joints were the cause of the accident in my opinion. I also have the dash cam video from the big rig.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-01-09
- VIN: 3TMLU4EN9EM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: THIS IS THE 2ND TIME MY TOYOTA TACOMA HAS BEEN DAMAGED BY RODENTS: THE 1ST TIME (12/15/2015), THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING ROUGH, THE ENGINE AND TRAC OFF WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON, AND THE DAMAGE WAS ABOUT $3,000. THE 2ND TIME (1/09/2021), THE ABS, AIRBAG, TRACTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON, AND THE COST OF THE DAMAGE IS NOT YET KNOWN, BUT IT IS LIKELY TO BE MORE EXPENSIVE (5 YEARS LATER). I HAVE HAD 19 PRIOR VEHICLES IN 46 YEARS (8 CHEVROLETS, 2 FORDS, 2 NISSANS, 3 HONDAS, 1 JEEP, 1 PONTIAC, 1 HYUNDAI, AND 1 CHRYSLER), AND I NEVER HAD SUCH SERIOUS RODENT PROBLEMS. RODENT DAMAGE HAS ALSO OCCURRED WITH MY PARENT'S TOYOTAS (WHO HAD MANY OTHER VEHICLE BRANDS IN 70 YEARS), AND OTHER NEIGHBORS AND FRIENDS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR NEWER MODEL TOYOTAS. HOWEVER, THEY DID NOT HAVE THESE ISSUES EVER WITH OTHER VEHICLE BRANDS IN THE PAST. ALSO, I HAD A NISSAN FRONTIER AT MY CURRENT ADDRESS IN 2012 AND 2013, AND STILL HAVE A NISSAN ALTIMA AT MY CURRENT ADDRESS, AND RODENTS NEVER CHEWED THE WIRES ON THOSE VEHICLES. THE PROBLEM IS THAT TOYOTA PUTS SOY IN THEIR WIRING INSULATION, AND RODENTS FIND IT TASTY. THERE IS A RESURRECTED CLASS ACTION IN CALIFORNIA ABOUT TOYOTA'S TASTY WIRES. I ASKED TOYOTA TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY, BUT TOYOTA MAINTAINS THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THEIR WIRING. HOWEVER, THE WIRING DOES CONTAIN SOY, AND RODENTS MOST CERTAINLY TO LIKE TO CHEW ON IT. SO, THIS IS THE SECOND TIME MY 2014 TOYOTA TACOMA HAS BEEN DAMAGED BY RODENTS, DESPITE ME TAKING THE FOLLOWING STEPS TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN: (1) PLACE BAG OF MOTH BALLS UNDER THE HOOD. (2) INSTALLED 2 SONIC SOUND DETERRENTS UNDER THE HOOD; (3) INSTALLED 1 LIGHT-FLASHING DETERRENT UNDER THE HOOD; (4) SPRAYED THE WHEEL WELLS AND ENGINE WITH PEPPERMINT SPRAY; (5) INSPECT THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT REGULARLY FOR SIGNS OF RODENTS;

I've owned Jeeps, Wranglers, and Cherokees before, but I must say that the Tacoma with the TRD off-road package, supercharger, and Baja suspension is a much better vehicle than any of those Jeeps. It's incredibly reliable and performs excellently off-road. While it may not match a Rubicon, it can certainly hang with it. Additionally, the Tacoma is much more comfortable and reliable on the road than a Rubicon. Toyota's dependability is truly unmatched.

I love the truck more now than when I first got it.
-
Great l/t! It really is a fine vehicle. We take it to Wetumpka, AL twice a year since we got it. Truly, when I buy another, it will be a 4-door. The truck is a GOOD truck, very good on gas and requires low to no maintenance. I would feel a little more comfortable with more cabin room. PS: killer tunes and Bluetooth!
-
I've owned two Tacomas so far. The first one was a 2000 model, but unfortunately, the frame rust got to it. I traded my Mazda B3000 truck for my current 2013 Tacoma Regular Cab 4x4, which I absolutely love! It's cheap, reliable, and dependable. I've driven it for over 170,000 miles and have only had to replace the battery, AC blower motor and resistor, and the starter solenoid contacts. That's it! I'm confident that it will last well over 400,000 miles. Just remember to spray off the undercarriage after driving in the snow to get all the salt off. Overall, it's a fantastic little truck!
-
I have to say that maintenance can be quite costly on a Toyota. However, my main complaint is with the radio - the buttons are not in a comfortable position to navigate easily. On the bright side, it is easy to get in and out of, and the seats are decently comfortable for a truck. Although, I do wish it had a 6v engine as sometimes it feels like I am doing a Fred Flintstone going up a hill :)

My 2013 Toyota ran out of oil twice without any warning or leaks, despite being parked on a cement floor in my garage. This happened even though the vehicle was not due for an oil change for another 1,500 miles or more, and I used the correct oil and filter. Unfortunately, the engine was irreparably damaged and had to be replaced. Although the car had eighty thousand miles on it, I was surprised by this issue and believe it was a rare occurrence.

I used to own a Nissan Frontier and I found that it had bigger tires and better seats than the Tacoma. Additionally, the engine was relatively quiet. While the Tacoma's V-6 engine has some power, the Frontier's V-6 engine is even more powerful and can handle bad weather better. However, the Tacoma has a better blind spot area than the Frontier. Both trucks are quite expensive, and the Tacoma's reputation is mostly based on its past success. Unfortunately, the truck was made too quickly and is poorly engineered. Toyota is becoming too big and it hurts when you fall from the top. To improve the truck, bigger tires, a correction to the engine noise problem, and a better braking system would be beneficial. This may be my last Tacoma.
Vidal Jast 2024-09-16
The V6 engine in this vehicle is quite loud and may not be to everyone's liking. Additionally, the front brakes may not be of the highest quality. However, it's worth noting that previous models, such as the 93 model, were of better quality. It's possible that the knocking noise coming from the left side of the engine is abnormal. Overall, this vehicle may not be the best option for everyone, but it's important to consider individual preferences and experiences when making a decision.

I purchased my new 2014 Toyota Tacoma V6 with Tow Package in April of this year and have been on a few trips since then. Getting a new vehicle was a huge milestone for me, especially getting a truck! I absolutely love having my own truck, and I have always loved Toyotas in the past. However, I must admit that my experience has been a bit disappointing. Unfortunately, the interior comfort is not up to par. The design of the seats causes a person to hunch forward, and this cannot be alleviated by raising or lowering the headrest or adjusting the lumbar knob, which only adjusts the firmness of the seat behind your lower back. After just 2.5 hours on the road, my back was screaming in pain, and after 7 hours, I was in tears. I hope Toyota can improve the design of their seats in the future to make long trips more comfortable.

The truck's gas mileage is poor and the engine lacks power to climb hills on the highway without downshifting the automatic transmission. The 2010 Tacoma had a radio that was upgradable to XM, and I assumed the 2013 model would be the same. However, I later found out that the 2013 Tacoma's radio was not upgradeable to XM, and the dealer had to install an aftermarket XM radio attached to the dash. As a result, the passenger often bumps the radio with their knee, and the steering wheel radio controls don't work for the XM. Additionally, at 40000 miles, the brakes started shaking the steering wheel when braking on the highway at higher speeds.
