STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-05
  • VIN: 5tepm62n22z
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: Truck was taken to dealer about 5 years ago or less for underbody spray and frame inspection "recall". Truck was cleared as safe. Today, Tire shop informs me frame is unsafe to lift the car by, and proceeded to put his hand through the frame to show the severity of the issue. So I take the truck to my local dealer and ask them what can be done about it. They inform me that, this "program" ended in 2016. I read that 10mm holes in frame would issue a frame/car recall. There is no way there wasn't an issue less than 5 years ago. I believe this is negligence of the dealer in keeping people safe in this vehicle and on the highway.

2002 Toyota Tacoma recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2002 Toyota Tacoma.

2012-11-23
  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: TIRES:TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE
  • Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 Tacoma light trucks manufactured from August 28, 2000, through August 27, 2004, and originally sold, or currently registered, in the following cold climate states with high road salt usage: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. The spare tire in the subject vehicles is located underneath the rear of the vehicle and held by a spare tire carrier. A lift plate on the carrier is used to help raise, lower and retain the tire. During its manufacture, the lift plate may not have been sufficiently coated with anti-corrosion materials. If the plate is insufficiently coated and the vehicle is operated in cold climate regions where road salts are frequently used, road spray can reach the carrier assembly and corrode the lift plate.
  • Consequence: Corrosion of the plate could cause it to break, which could result in detachment of the spare tire from the vehicle. Detachment of the spare tire could result in a road hazard which may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, dealers will inspect the vehicle and replace the spare tire carrier lift plate as necessary, free of charge. The recall began in February 2013. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

Negative 2002 Toyota Tacoma car reviews

2.4 L may not be the strongest, and the mpg is only around 24 hwy/21 combined. The cab is also quite small and tight. However, overall, a Yota is durable and dependable, and you can't really ever go wrong with it.

I've had my Tacoma for over a year and it has been a very reliable and low maintenance truck. It has plenty of torque and nice off-road features, especially the electronically locking rear differential (TRD Package). I have had several warranty items covered without question from the dealer.

I bought this truck used a month ago without inspecting the frame, and unfortunately, it turned out to be a rust bucket. Now, whenever I see a Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, or Sequoia, I can't help but check for rusted frames. Although my truck is unsafe to drive due to the rusted frame, the engine and automatic transmission are in excellent condition with no mechanical problems. I contacted Toyota Motors, and they informed me that since they never issued a recall, it's up to the owner to fix the issue. It's shocking that a 17-year-old truck can have a disintegrated frame while the outside body has no rust. Unfortunately, there are thousands of Toyota trucks on the road with rusted frames that could split in half at any moment, endangering innocent drivers and their loved ones. The federal government should investigate this danger on public roads. Toyota's moving forward campaign makes sense now; they sold a defective product and only issued a voluntary fix when made aware of the defect. They should have followed VW's example and bought back every defective truck they sold.

My 2.7L 4 cyl has been zooming along for almost 95,000 miles now. Although, I do pause for thought when the truck seems to 'lurch' at stop lights, but once it gets warmed up, everything seems to gel for the rest of my drive. It can be a bit bouncy even on the highway and a challenge to control in wind-driven rain due to its light weight. However, I am pleased with the quality and have not had any really expensive or repeated problems. I am hoping to drive my '02 for another 50K miles and see many more miles after that. I am considering buying another Toyota, but I have had less expensive Fords make it to this point just fine. Here's hoping that the next one is a Texas-made Tundra.

I've always had my eye on a red Toyota 4x4 Xtracab since my college days, and my wife and I were finally able to purchase a brand new TRD off the lot. We've taken it to some of the most inhospitable places in the Colorado high country, moved out of two houses with it, landscaped countless lots with it, and even added kids to the mix. Overall, it's been flawless and we still love it dearly after 8 1/2 years. Admittedly, the interior is a bit small for a child seat and two adults over 5'10, and there are a few rattles. It also gets less than 20 mpg and rides like a buckboard wagon. However, it's a go-anywhere truck that always gets the job done. We've never once regretted our decision to buy it.

Your Tacoma sounds like a great ride! It's a regular cab short wheelbase 2WD with 2.4 L and automatic, which makes it fun to drive and very maneuverable. It's also great for hauling loads and gets fairly respectable gas mileage (20-24 mpg). You've even taken it on several cross country trips with a loaded bed and it has performed just great. Thanks for sharing your experience!

If you're looking for a truck that's both convenient and comfortable, you should definitely check this one out. As a larger person, I appreciate the ample room it provides. The only minor issue I have is with the placement of the clock, but that's hardly a dealbreaker. Overall, I'd say this is a great truck that's definitely worth considering.

Hey there! Could you please take a look at the fuel hoses?

  5. Chris DuBuque 2024-09-08

I really enjoy going off-road in my truck! It performs really well in those conditions. On the road, the ride is decent, but it does bounce a bit too much for my liking. Unfortunately, the back seat is not spacious enough for an adult (I have an extended cab). Additionally, the passenger airbag rattles like a snake and the clock is poorly positioned - it's covered by the steering wheel and difficult to see. I have noticed that the gas pedal and brake pedal are too close together, which can be problematic when I'm wearing my work boots. However, the power is impressive and I have no complaints when hauling a trailer or carrying a full load in the bed.
