2007 Toyota Tacoma problems
The Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota since 1995. The first-generation Tacoma (model years 1995 through 2004) was classified as a compact pickup. The second generation (model years 2005 through 2015) and third generation (in production since 2015) models are classified as mid-sized pickups. The Tacoma was Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 2005.
As of 2015, the Tacoma was sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Bermuda, and the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia. Most markets across the world receive the Toyota Hilux in lieu of the Tacoma.
The name "Tacoma" was derived from the Coast Salish peoples' name for Mount Rainier in the U.S. state of Washington.

Common 2007 Toyota Tacoma problems
The 2007 Toyota Tacoma is a popular choice among truck owners due to its build quality, durable engines, and ability to hold its value. However, like any vehicle, it has some common problems that owners have reported.
- Fading Paint: One of the most common problems with the 2007 Tacoma is fading paint, which is particularly prevalent at around 75,000 miles. This issue occurs when the paint is exposed to excessive sunlight, causing it to fail. The only way to address this problem is to repaint the affected areas, which can cost around $1,000 per panel.
- Surging Engines: Another issue that some 2007 Tacoma owners have reported is surging engines, which can occur in the first 20,000 miles. This problem is caused by the engine computer and can be resolved with a software update from Toyota, which can be installed by a dealership.
- Unintentional 4WD Engaging: Some Tacoma owners have reported that their vehicle's 4WD engages accidentally, particularly at around 150,000 miles. This issue is caused by the transfer case software and may require a new computer, which can cost around $600.
- Transmission Problems: Over the years, some Tacoma drivers have reported experiencing a faulty automatic transmission once the car was over a certain high-mileage. This issue can cause the vehicle to have difficulty shifting properly, but it is only common as you get close to 150k miles of use.
- Premature Ball Joint Wear: Another highly reported Toyota Tacoma issue is the premature wear on the lower ball joints, which can make it more difficult to steer and reduce the car's ability to self-center. In some cases, these worn and loose ball joints can detach from the suspension altogether, causing a loss of control of the vehicle.
- Faulty Starter: If your Tacoma's engine isn't turning over, it's likely due to a faulty starter, rather than an engine problem. This issue can cause grinding noises when trying to start the engine, taking several tries to get the engine to turn over, and of course, if the engine won't start at all.
- Failed Airflow Sensor: Another common problem with the 2007 Tacoma is a failed airflow sensor, which can cause the check engine light to come on and the engine to run poorly.
While these issues can be concerning, it's important to note that a properly maintained 2007 Tacoma can last over 350,000 miles, which is 100,000 miles longer than top competitors like the Ford Ranger.
In summary, the 2007 Toyota Tacoma is a reliable and durable truck that can last for many years with proper maintenance. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to common problems, such as fading paint, surging engines, and issues with the 4WD system. Owners should be aware of these issues and take steps to address them promptly to ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicle.

- Summary: These vehicles have frame rot. It was addressed in cold weather states with a recall but the recall was not available in California. My vehicle was a california only truck. The corrosion if undressed will result in the frame breaking in half behind the rear left passenger seat. Toyota should have included all states in this recall and there are an abundance of toyotas manufactured from 2005 to 2010 on the road with this issue that are ticking time bombs. My vehicle only has 145K miles on it.

- VIN: 5TETX22N07Z
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: Over the years, Toyota has had to issue numerous recalls for their Toyota Tacomas and frame replacements/maintenance required by Toyota due to rust and corrosion. However, Toyota chose not to replace all frames, instead decided to "treat" the issue with underspray. My Toyota, like many others, has received the recalled Toyota undercoat spray to prevent rust and corrosion on a frame with known issues (once in 2015, another in 2019). I have just received a phonecall from my mechanic that my frame is now unsafe to drive and needs to be fixed or replaced. However, Toyota has claimed they have no guarantee on the vehicle and it isn't there problem because it is outside of the timeframe. However...this car DID participate in their recall 2x. And the recall and work done did not solve the problem or the recalled part: The frame that his crippled by corrosion and rust due to a flaw in the manufacturing process. This is leading to a car that is due for a very significant, expensive improvement that was at no cause by owners actions, or a very unsafe HIGH NUMBER of vehicles still on the road with failing frames due to Toyota's inability to fix their root cause issue on their initial recall in order to save a few bucks.

- Summary: My Tacoma has a frame rust issue. I have been told that Toyota did a "voluntary recall" and replaced rusty frames under warranty but that program has ended. This is terrible because it wasn't in an official NHTSA recall, so a Carfax says nothing of 5his issue. I contacted Toyota and they are unwilling to do anything. I have been told that my frame can break in half while driving When reading about this issue, it seems like Toyota did not replace all frames. Instead, there was some way based on the state you lived in as to if you could get a frame replaced. My truck was titled in California. Can someone please help me to get Toyota to repurchase the vehicle from me, allow me to trade it in on a new truck, or replace the frame in the same way they had done so in the past? Thank you.

- VIN: 5TEMU52N17Z
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: As part of the Tacoma Frame Replacement program (ZH6 and H0F), I brought my Tacoma to my Toyota dealer. They deemed my frame to NOT qualify for the replacement and lazily applied corrosion resistant spray to the rust on the frame that quickly flaked off. As soon as the program ended, the frame deteriorated quickly. There are 3 spots on the frame where my hand can slide through near the front of the frame on both the driver side and the passenger side. I have removed about 5 pounds of frame/rust from the interior of the frame and the exterior of the frame. I have contacted Toyota several times and been told that there are no appeals or anything I can do except pay for a new frame out of pocket, sell, or try to repair.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-20
- VIN: 5TEMU52N77Z
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: Frame is completely rusted. the rear gas tank strap where it attaches to the frame corroded through and the strap dropped and was dragging on the ground. the gas tank also dropped and made it difficult to remove the gas cap. upon further inspection the frame is completely rusted through in spots. in 2014 a rust protective coating was applied by a dealer. it did nothing to stop the rust it just covered it. the steel is delaminating underneath the coating. It was just a band-aid to get them out of warranty period. these frames should have been a full recall. the strap could of easily hit the ground and bounced up and punctured a brake line or the gas tank. with it sparking on the ground a fire could of happened. The tacoma is in immaculate condition except for the frame. this is my 4th toyota and the only one that has had a problem.

- Summary: We bought the truck used in 2021 when it had 114,000 mi. Looked great, drives great. Now our mechanic tells us there are rust spots all over the frame — and that there is a recall. I looked into the recall and the window closed last year. Is it legal for Toyota to stop a recall when it is such a big safety issue? Buyers of used cars need to know about this site to check for recalls. I think very few people know about this app.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-27
- VIN: 5TEUX42N07Z
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Yesterday, 7/27/2022, I had my 2007 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab at my mechanic's shop for a minor issue. While on the lift he noticed significant rust on the frame rails. He brought me over and showed me extensive areas where the metal was completely rusted through. I have never seen anything like this on even the oldest of vehicles. Subsequently I did a search online and found that this was a known issue for many years of Tacoma truck frames, but I was never notified by Toyota or anyone including the local Toyota dealer where I have had services done. I cannot believe a company as well established as Toyota would allow such a potentially serious problem to go unaddressed. Toyota should be held responsible for selling defective and dangerous vehicles and be required to effect repairs as soon as possible completely at their cost. Once I return and picked up truck from storage I found chassis completely rusted with several areas that were in critical need of repair. I contacted Toyota and was informed I missed the cut off date for recall repair . FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-11
- VIN: 5TENX22N67Z
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The rear strap that holds the gas tank to the bottom of the truck broke. When It came loose on one side it dropped to the street and was bounced up and bent up against the flexible, rear brake line. The brake line was not cut. The strap end dragged on the street causing sparks. I had no idea what all the noise was coming from. I thought I might have a loose exhaust pipe. I drove it a couple days until I noticed the metal hanging down. I used a mirror to see what it was and took it in right away for replacement. It cost me $330. The bracket could have cut the brake line, or pierced the gas tank. The tank could have dropped and blown up. I have never heard of this problem before. I've had older pick ups for 40 years with no such problem.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-01-10
- VIN: 5tetx22n57z
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I was totally aware of the recall for these year models of Tacoma and I brought the truck in several times to have the frame inspected and asked for it to be replaced. The folks at Dorschel Automotive group turned me away saying it did not meet the "rust perforation standard." Lo and behold, when Dorschel was bought by Bob Johnson Auto Group, the first time I took it in they recognized that the frame was entirely rotted and would not pass inspection. At this point, I called Toyota Customer Service and they said they would not honor the recall as it is outside the window of time. Yet this is not a matter of me not taking proper action. I did. I did my due diligence and I am being harmed by the negligence of the service managers at Dorschel. I made Toyota aware that the frame inspection was not done properly. I could see visible rust and I made mention of that. Now I am in a really tough spot. The truck only has around 130K miles on it and planty of useful life but for this faulty frame. Consumer stated attempted to access the benefits under the warranty recall.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-04
- VIN: 5TEMU52N77Z
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The truck was getting repaired and the mechanic showed me the bottom of the truck and rust was everywhere. The bottom frames is rusty and has some rust holes.

I'm on my third Toyota truck and I couldn't be happier. I've owned an '86, '99, and now an '07. The ride is smooth and the gas mileage is just as good as my last one, if not better. The engine is powerful yet quiet and the transmission shifts smoothly. Inside, it's incredibly comfortable and the fold-down rear seatlets are perfect for holding ice chests on camping trips. The only downside is that the rear end can bottom out under load, but that can easily be remedied with add-a-leafs or air bags. Additionally, there isn't much ground clearance, so I'm considering getting a lift kit. While I preferred the old lever-type 4X4 range shifter, the new electronic dial type range selector works reliably, even if it's not as smooth and predictable as the old lever. Overall, I'm a big fan of Toyota trucks and this one is no exception!

This truck is a typical well-built, reliable vehicle from Toyota. I'm glad to hear that you just got out of a full-size P/U and are confident that this 07 Tacoma will perform as well or better than your full-size one.

First, I am a truck guy, never have owned a car. I am 51 years old. My first truck was a 1951 GMC 1/2 ton. Since then I have owned Chevys, Dodges, Internationals, Jeeps and Fords. I have close to a million road miles so I know trucks. This is my first Toyota. I love this truck. I test drove all the others, and I mean all, and this truck is by far the best built, best designed, and best performing. I have 1700 miles on it and for combination driving hwy/city I am getting 24 mpg. Strict hwy driving up 6 & 7% grades from Grand Junction to Denver over the Rocky Mountains and Contenental Divide at 75 mph I got 23.5 mpg. Haven't towed the 4 horse trailer yet, but am sure it will perform.

I bought this truck new and have used it to move my art three times. I absolutely love it! The truck is great on long freeway drives and the economy is impressive. I was even in an accident in the truck and felt very safe. Overall, it's a wonderful truck.

This is my first Toyota truck and I must say, I'm impressed! While I've owned a Frontier and a Ranger in the past, the Tacoma surpasses them both (although it does come with a higher price tag). My Access Cab 4 cyl. is great on gas, but could use a bit more power. I do find first gear to be a bit low and difficult to find at times when rolling at lower speeds. The exterior design is decent, although the stock wheels and tires are a bit small for the well area. On the inside, the layout is nicely done and there's plenty of leg room for taller drivers. While the radio could be a bit stronger and the access cab area seating could be more comfortable, overall the quality is good.

I recently traded my Tacoma, so now I can give an unbiased review. I also own a Toyota Camry. After owning the Tacoma and talking to Toyota customer service, I was hesitant to buy another one. The first issue I encountered was a high-pitched whistling noise from the front end. Toyota couldn't diagnose the problem, and customer service told me that 'your truck was designed that way.' Eventually, I found a TSB on the internet for a weak seal on the windshield. I appreciate Toyota's help with this. Next, the temp/compass thing broke, and the HVAC fan switch only worked on high or not at all. The rear end feels like it has resistance, and there are strange clunks and bangs. Please see below for more details.

Hey there! I wanted to share something that happened to me while driving. Unfortunately, my mud flaps tore and broke while I was going just 70 MPH. It's going to be pretty expensive to replace them, but I'm just glad no one was hurt.

Hey there! It seems like you're concerned about the quality of these trucks. I understand your frustration with the rusty frames, broken rear leaf springs, and other issues you've experienced. It's important to note that heavy loads can cause the beds to deform and the tailgates to bend. However, I'd like to assure you that Toyota is committed to producing high-quality vehicles. Let's work together to find a solution that meets your needs and expectations!

My '97 Taco got better mileage and was perfect for going to Home Depot or the transfer station. The smaller truck was fine for my needs and I don't need a 'full size pickup' to compensate for something else. I am confident in my preference for the smaller truck and its capabilities.

Toyota is a well-known brand that has been praised for its reliability. However, it is important to consider the facts when evaluating the brand. While some models, such as the Tacoma, have experienced recalls for issues like rusted frames and broken leaf springs, it is important to note that these issues are being addressed through recalls. Although some customers have reported delays in repairs, Toyota is committed to ensuring the safety of its customers. While Toyota may not be the most technologically advanced brand, it is still a popular choice for many drivers. It is important to weigh the pros and cons when considering a Toyota vehicle.
