The Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota since 1995. The first-generation Tacoma (model years 1995 through 2004) was classified as a compact pickup. The second generation (model years 2005 through 2015) and third generation (in production since 2015) models are classified as mid-sized pickups. The Tacoma was Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 2005.

As of 2015, the Tacoma was sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Bermuda, and the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia. Most markets across the world receive the Toyota Hilux in lieu of the Tacoma.

The name "Tacoma" was derived from the Coast Salish peoples' name for Mount Rainier in the U.S. state of Washington.

  2. Shuddering While Braking:
    • Some Tacoma models experience shuddering while braking, especially around 15,000 miles, which can be attributed to excessive wear on the brakes, leading to warping rotors over time.
    • Replacing the rotors costs around $600, depending on local labor rates.
  3. Frame Rust:
    • Frame rust has been observed on some Toyota Tacoma models at around 40,000 miles, particularly in snowy areas where roads are salted.
    • Installing an undercoating for around $500 is recommended to protect the exposed metal from corrosion.
  4. Recalls:
    • There are 3 recalls on the 2018 Toyota Tacoma, with two covering the fuel pump and one for the brake master cylinder.
    • Toyota offers free replacements for the affected parts under these recalls.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-15
  • VIN: 5TFCZ5AN7JX
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: 2018 Tacoma DC TRD Off Road, V6, hydraulic brake master cylinder, 49,000 miles: Brake fluid leaking into the cab of the vehicle beneath the brake pedal. Brake fluid is leaking from the rear of the master cylinder, running down the push rod and dripping off of the brake pedal bracket. Brake pedal resistance is slightly reduced. First noticed something dripping on my floor mat in April of 2023. I wasn't sure what it was. It never occurred to me that it could be brake fluid. There shouldn't be any vehicle fluids under the dash. There is the possibility of the system losing enough pressure that the brake system could fail entirely causing an accident and possible injury. (same symptoms as the recall for the vacuum boosted master cylinder-internal seal failure) This part should last at least half the life of the vehicle. 5 years and 49,000 miles is very premature for this part to fail. Took vehicle to the dealership. The dealership was quick to inform me that there are no open recalls on my vehicle, and this is not the same issue as the recall. I have a different style of master cylinder that is not affected by the recall. Toyota will not cover the failure. I should replace the entire master cylinder ($2100) and reevaluate. There have been no warning lamps, messages, or DTC's.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-18
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5TFCZ5AN6JX
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Pulling vehicle into the garage on a cold morning (15 deg F). Hydraulic booster/brake master cylinder suddenly stopped providing boost pressure and brake pedal dropped to the floor. With no braking effort able to be applied the vehicle was driven into the house at slow speed. No hydraulic leaks are noted and pedal height and brake performance seems to have returned. There is fluid in the master cylinder reservoir and it doesn't appear to be contaminated. Braking capability returned after placing the vehicle in park and then reversing. Waiting for insurance follow up to select a collision repair shop and have the vehicle towed for repair. Dash cam video of the incident is available and clearly shows braking occurring and then the vehicle speeding up or failing to stop. Was unable to upload the video due to size. Photos are also available showing the damage and dry garage floors where the accident occurred. Vehicle is equipped with WeatherTech floor mats and I've verified there are no issues with mats and unattended acceleration with photographic documentation. I was the driver during the incident, am ASE Master Certified, and have taught automotive courses at the local community college for the last 12 years, worked as an automotive technician for 10 years prior, and work professionally as a Mechanical Engineer. Leveraging my experience, there is clearly a present concern with the hydraulic brake booster/master cylinder, particularly at cold temperatures.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-09
  • VIN: 5TFDZ5BN6JX
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: The mechanical design of Toyota's plastic visor assemblies that are installed in my Tacoma truck is disgustingly worthless and every last one of them will ultimately fail unless they are left securely fastened in the end visor holding clamp, permanently, and at all times while driving. That means not rotating them to shade a glaring sun through a door window glass. Toyota needs to redesign and replace all of their defective visor assemblies. The problem is with the rod holding design on the back side of the visor mounting plate. It is supposed to securely hold the plastic rotating arm from falling out of the mounting plate. It is wholly inadequate and will not safely support even the meager weight of the visor leaf itself. The only safe option is to leave the visor arm snapped into the end stabilizing/holding clamp. Mine dropped out of the mounting plate, twisting and dangling from the power cord wiring at a vulnerable time in moving traffic. It not only restricted my view, I was struggling to grasp the swinging visor to remove it from obstructing my view. All the while, steering with my other hand and merging into freeway speed traffic. It was a very serious problem at an inopportune and critical time. Since I was merging into freeway lanes from an on-ramp, there was no exit opportunity and stopping was not an option; all I could do was fight to avoid colliding with other vehicles. The hazard was compounded by a glaring sun that I was trying to mitigate by using the visor to shield the bright glare coming through the driver's door window. I was left purely with luck and good fortune; no guarantees at all. Compounding the problem was that it occurred during semi-rush hour traffic. It had significant potential of becoming a very serious life-threatening accident. I took the truck to my dealership for repairs but the only option was to purchase a duplicate assembly in excess of $400 U.S. Dollars, installed. Toyota needs to do the right thing and warranty all of them.

SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-07
  • VIN: 3TMCZ5AN3JM
  • Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: When I go to accelerate at low speed my vehicle shudders shakes and vibrates, no engine lights or codes have popped up, the issue is somewhere from transmission to the rear end. Im guessing transmission or torque converter. With my vehicle only having 136,000 miles and is well taken care of this is ridiculous, I have checked drive line and tires and everything seems to be working as it should so it has to be something internal

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-01
  • VIN: 3TMDZ5BN3JM
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

I contacted Toyota customer care to report and ask for advice, and they just said thank you for your feedback Vehicle is out of warranty nothing we can do about the issue. Explained this is an ongoing issue through this style of vehicle and should be noted or looked into as a possible safety concern. They said thanks for the feedback.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-04
  • VIN: 5tfax5gn2jx
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: 2018 2WD Tacoma. Auto transmission. Ever since new and even today, when traveling 30-40 MPH and slowing to anywhere from 10-25 MPH, and then trying to accelerate, the engine and/or transmission stumbles/hesitates for at least a full second, and then the engine races higher and a hard transmission downshift occurs jerking your head and body back and sending the vehicle into a fast acceleration.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-10
  • VIN: 5TFCZ5AN0JX
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The vehicle every time I fuel either does start afterwards or it would start and drive for about 3-6 minutes then it will stall. The very first time it happened was on the highway which I didn’t know why my car had stall but now that it has done it right at the fuel pump and also more often than not. I tried using other gas stations just to rule out bad fue but it has been like this for the past 6 month. I have taken it to Toyota MCDONOUGH in Georgia and they could not give a diagnostic because the check engine light does not stays on and they said they can’t replicate the problem.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-02-12
  • VIN: 3TMAZ5CN0JM
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The jack failed on this vehicle. I tried to jack it up off road as I got stuck on about 10 February 2021. The base got bent up and the next time I tried to use the jack I lightly dropped my vehicle because the jack was wobbly. I think immediately or some time after that I bought a jack from an automotive store and threw the jack that came with this vehicle away. I was definitely in an unideal situation and place to jack up my vehicle but my only other choice was to wait for someone to move it and I had no cell signal and I was in the middle of no where. The skid plate is dented and the vehicle itself has since been to a toyota dealer for scheduled maintenance and all of the tires have been replaced. Nothing was seemed to be damaged. But the jack was at a slight angle and the base was bent. I believe it is possible that this might be an issue for other owners of this jack component in their vehicles.

Negative 2018 Toyota Tacoma car reviews

  1. Darrion Abshire 2025-01-02

I hope you had a chance to test drive the TRD Pro with all the options! In my experience, I found that the vehicle could benefit from some additional power. The brakes were a bit mushy and required a bit more pressure than I was used to, but they still got the job done. The transmission could also use some improvement, as it felt a bit clunky during my test drive. However, I did find the fit and finish to be acceptable. The 4WD drive options were a bit complex, but I'm sure with some practice they would become easier to use. Finally, the head unit seemed a bit outdated, but it still got the job done. Overall, I think the TRD Pro has a lot of potential and I hope you find the right vehicle for you!

  2. Demarcus Weber 2024-10-18

If you're looking for a vehicle to haul more than groceries or drive up hills, this may not be the best option. The shifting may not be as smooth as you'd like and the fuel mileage could be better. It's unfortunate that you lost $11,000 in value in less than 2 months when trying to trade it in. Perhaps considering a GMC could be a good alternative. In the end, you decided to trade off the truck.

  3. Emiliano Ortiz 2024-09-14

The transmission on my Tacoma has been a challenge since I purchased it in June 2018. I have been struggling to get used to the random upshifts and the feeling that the truck lacks power. Additionally, the transmission often refuses to downshift, causing the truck to shake. Even when driving uphill, the truck struggles to hold onto a lower gear, resulting in a loss of acceleration. I have found myself frequently pressing the ECP button to try and improve the driving experience. I am considering taking the truck to the dealership to see if a transmission software update can help. Overall, I have found the transmission to be a frustrating aspect of an otherwise great truck.

Engine stutters or misfires under light acceleration or when going up a hill. The dealer has attempted some computer upgrades that did not resolve the issue. During a test drive with a Toyota engineer, they acknowledged that there was indeed a problem with the engine. However, after receiving a call from Toyota a few days later, they stated that the truck was operating as expected and that there was no issue. As a result, I am hesitant to trust this new truck. This experience has left me feeling disappointed as a first-time Toyota owner.

I recently had the opportunity to rent a Toyota Tacoma for a few days and put it through its paces. During my time with the truck, I tested it on steep grades, high-speed highways, off-road terrain, and even used it to haul a few hundred pounds of camping gear. While the Tacoma performed well off-road, I found that it struggled with power, maintaining speed, and shifting. The transmission would downshift and rev to nearly redline just to keep up with traffic on moderate grades, while other smaller cars passed me with ease. Additionally, the front seats were not very comfortable and the seating position left something to be desired. Overall, I would not recommend the Tacoma for heavy cargo, towing, or hauling, despite Toyota's claims about its payload and towing capabilities. However, it is a great off-roader with low power requirements. Personally, I plan on purchasing a Nissan Frontier later this year, as it offers good torque with a 5-speed transmission. While the Tacoma's 6-speed transmission can work well in certain situations, it is not well-balanced for this particular vehicle. I would advise spending some time with the Tacoma before making a purchase decision.

I love this truck, so it's hard to write anything negative about it. However, there are a couple of things that I don't particularly like. Firstly, it shifts a bit like a donkey in heat, and secondly, the seats are not the most comfortable - they feel a bit like wooden church pews. On the plus side, when the blower motor went out at 35k, it only took me 10 minutes to replace it, and Toyota reimbursed me for the cost.

Welcome back to Toyota! It's great to hear that you've had such positive experiences with their vehicles in the past. It sounds like the 2018 Tacoma is a great fit for you, especially with its impressive safety features. While getting in and out may be a bit of a challenge, it's clear that the Tacoma's reliability and great sound system make it well worth it. It's wonderful that you can enjoy your favorite tunes and feel young again while driving. It's also reassuring to know that you won't have to worry about costly repairs like the one you had with your Silverado. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Living in Colorado, we absolutely love our truck! We've driven just under 5K miles so far (I only have to drive a short distance to the train every day), and it has been very impressive. The ride is smooth, the mpg is just what the EPA estimates, and the reliability has been top-notch. At first, the engine would hunt for gears on the highway, but after driving it for a while, that has stopped. The ToyotaSense/adaptive cruise control takes a bit of getting used to, but after trying it a few times, it's really cool and nice to have on longer road trips. As expected, the off-road capability is phenomenal! We took it up some very intense forest roads where crawl control was needed, and the Tacoma made it look so easy (even with stock tires and no additional lift!). I would highly recommend this truck to anyone looking for a new ride. It's a great daily driver, but also fantastic for weekends when you want to get up to the mountains or get out of town.

Still trouble free. The truck had a recall about the frame, so I took it in. They sprayed the inside of the frame to protect against rust, and there was no charge. They even provided a loaner for the day. The only complaint I have about this truck is the oil filter. As I stated before, my last truck was a 2007 Tacoma, and it was the easiest vehicle I've ever had for changing the oil filter. I wonder why they ever changed that design. Other than that, this is a great truck. It has great pick up and towing power, good gas mileage (20-25), an excellent transmission, and good looks.

I come from a 1st generation Tacoma with over 450xxx miles and it was still running strong. I've had this 2017 TRD Sport 4x4 for about a year and a half now and I absolutely love it! Toyota is renowned for producing fantastic trucks, and this one is no exception.
