The Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota since 1995. The first-generation Tacoma (model years 1995 through 2004) was classified as a compact pickup. The second generation (model years 2005 through 2015) and third generation (in production since 2015) models are classified as mid-sized pickups. Common 2006 Toyota Tacoma problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma, several common problems have been reported:
- Automatic Transmission Issues:
- The Tacoma may experience transmission problems, particularly with shifting, which typically occurs at higher mileage between 125,000 and 150,000 miles. Causes include throttle position sensor issues, transmission fluid leaks, and shift solenoid problems in 20-year model vehicles from 1995 to 2015. Adjusting the sensor can help resolve this challenge.
- Cracked Amber Front Light Lens:
- Despite seeming minor, cracked parking light lenses are a significant issue in the 2006 Tacoma. This problem can be fixed by replacing the lights, with costs varying between $100 and $1,000. Owners can opt for local mechanics for more affordable solutions.
- Broken Leaf Springs:
- The rear leaf springs in the Tacoma Pickup are prone to breaking, flattening, and cracking. In 2007, Toyota issued a technical service bulletin to address this issue, replacing the leaf springs with new units.
These problems highlight some of the key issues reported by owners of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma. Addressing these concerns promptly through proper maintenance and repairs can help ensure the longevity and performance of the vehicle.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-07
- VIN: 5TELU42N06Z
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Toyota Tacoma 2006 TRD, This vehicle was recalled for rust to the frame on 10/03/2018. The frame was replaced by Sheehy Toyota of Fredericksburg, Virginia. The work was done and completed con 02/07/2019. The vehicle supposedly was thoroughly inspected for any problems by the dealership. Then released to me after the work was done. Then in November of 2019 I moved from Virginia to Nebraska. Used this truck to move with and pulled a trailer over 2,000 miles with it. Little did I know my life was in danger due to negligence by the dealers service department. Recently I replaced the rear bumper on this truck. By doing this it fully exposed the trailer hitch system on the truck. This is when I clearly seen that a part of the trailer hitch was completely rusted through. When replacing the frame on this truck the dealership had to notice this severely damaged part. Yet they did not inform me of this situation. If they had, I would have had the part replaced, due to the chance of it breaking which could have caused an accident. This is nothing short of pure negligence on the part of this dealership. People could have been severely injured or killed due to this negligence. I have pictures of this part just the way they left it.

At this point I'm very concerned for my husband safeness that is the car he uses for work, we have been a very loyal customer to Toyota and now I'm very disappointed and more so concerned about my husband safety as Toyota seems not able to fix it I had filed a claim and they did not resolve in our favor. I bought this car in 2005 brand new, and I know for sure that this never been work on...I am a mechanic myself so I does the Maintenace to all my cars...I just want to make the company aware to prevent any possible serious accident...I owe 5 Toyota cars and I know one of the best and safest vehicle.

- Summary: I will try to give you as concise statement of my complaint as possible, however, I have copies I sent to the manufacturer and others that I'm willing to furnish you if requested. On 3/18/21, I wrote to Toyota's Executive VP , Chief Quality Officer, [XXX], stating my compliance with their notice of 7/9/15, requiring frame inspection, significant perforation not found, therefore they applied CRC corrosion resistant compound to my frame. As NO critical problem was noted, I felt I was good until during a later inspection was performed and rated more attention. On 3/29/21 during my next oil change I noted on a notation on an unusual service bill, typewritten not the usual custom printed type, a notation that I have 2 holes, approx. 3.5" on my frame, use caution if driving". At this time I found there was an open class action suit against Toyota. Toyota advised me that since I had not responded to more than one notification I was not included in the suit. I replied that "I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY SUCH NOTATION". As they did not send receipt requested or certified, I neither could prove sent or not received. I asked for consideration based on that to which, was denied. I have written also to CT Attorney General, CT US Senator, [XXX], with only the Attorney General's office stating Toyota's response was negative. I realize this is a late request, I was not aware of his avenue. I have Certified copies of each request for help, which I am more than happy to copy and send to you if you will try to help me right Toyota's wrong. I'm an 89 year old male just trying to right a wrong I believe done to me. I DID NOT RECEIVE NOTIFICATION FROM TOYOTA! , If I had, I would not be so persistent. I send my letters CERTIFIED, they should have had to also, could have solved this problem earlier. Please help me, thank you. WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-03
- VIN: 3TMLU42N86M
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: I was driving my Toyota Tacoma and all of the sudden, without any warning I felt an abrupt bump which caused the bed of the truck to jump a foot in the air. Looking in my mirrors to find out what happened I saw a tire rolling beside my truck past me into the other lane. Thankfully there were no cars approaching. I pulled over and examined my vehicle. I saw my spare was not there. I found the wheel now laying in the middle of the street and realized this was my spare tire that came off. In the street near where the bump occurred I found the spare retention part and a metal part with frayed wires. I put the spare tire and parts in the truck and called the Toyota Corperate and told them what happened. I was informed that my vehicle was not subject to a recall for the spare tire retention system. They informed me that I would need to take it to the dealer for inspection. My tacoma is at the dealer with the parts. They are covering the costs of the repair now after initally telling me I would have to pay to repair it. The spare tire coming off during motion put me, my family and other motorists in danger. I was on my way to fill up my truck for a camping trip where we pull a trailer. I can only imagine what would happen if the wheel came off while I was towing my trailer. Would it cause my trailer to flip over, causing an accident, injury or even death of my family or others?

- Summary: My 2006 Toyota Tacoma Chassis has Rust issues. At my last Oil Change my Mechanic recommended I go to My Toyota Dealer with The Problem. A few years back I was under The Truck and noticed it as well. I notified Crestmont Toyota in Pompton Plains NJ about it. They assured me it was inspected and during The Recall and was found to be safe and without issues. After going back and forth with them [the recall is over] I called Toyota Corporate about my issue. They basically said the same thing. I even went as far as to put my truck an a Lift and paint the chassis with POR-15 Rust Preventative Coating. I see some areas on the chassis around where the Shock Absorbers are welded to the Chassis where I couldn't get to. Is there anyone that could help me in my dilemma? I only have around 100,000 miles on this 17 year old truck. I bought it 7 years ago used from Crestmont Toyota with 52,000 miles on it.I'm retired since 10/2015 and thought it would be my last Vehicle I would need to purchase. Thank You Thomas J. Bought a used 06 2.7L 5sp. This truck runs great and doesn’t burn oil. My truck has 375,000mi. These trucks are very reliable and they just last forever! I can’t see why this truck wouldn’t make it to a million miles if well maintained. The price of entry is definitely worth it.

I once had a 1994 Toyota compact and I loved it until it was totaled in an accident. The new 2006 extended cab Tacoma is the same vehicle I loved reborn to be even better. It has more space, power, and good looks, and drives better than most cars. In my opinion, Toyota is untouchable with the Tacoma.

The truck has a great feel of spaciousness and plenty of room. The V6 engine is extremely powerful and responsive, always ready to jump into action. With the TRD package, the truck has a nice, stiff ride and handles curves and bumpy roads with ease. I've only had it for a few weeks, but I already feel like I made a great decision to purchase it. It's the perfect truck for occasional hunting trips or hauling your gear.

The Tacoma certainly has one of the hottest body styles of any truck in its class. The satisfaction continues with the comfortable and stylish interior. While the engine is tight with excellent performance, there is some concern over gas mileage. However, it should be noted that this con was known at the time of purchase and with today's gas prices. The bed liner and compartments are the envy of all who see the truck.

The Tacoma was not a good fit for me, as I found it to be one of the most uncomfortable vehicles I have ever owned. The driver's seat was like sitting in a hammock with my rear end sitting in a depression and my thighs being elevated, which made extended drives unpleasant. Additionally, the back seat was not overly comfortable according to my wife. The fuel economy was also not impressive, averaging only 17.5-18 mpg. Furthermore, the paint was susceptible to chips and scratches, which was disappointing given how nice it looked initially. The steering was vague and lacked road feel, which made it difficult to stay on course. Lastly, the soft suspension made it challenging to carry any kind of load, and there was a lot of road noise. Despite these issues, I am confident in my assessment of the Tacoma's shortcomings and would not recommend it to others.

Second truck issued, first was replaced using the lemon law. Unfortunately, the current truck is experiencing clutch and 4x4 disengagement problems. I really wish Toyota had kept the Tacoma as a smaller truck, as this would have helped with the gas mileage. Currently, I'm getting 21 hwy / 18 city.

The Tacoma is a quiet and smooth ride, although the handling could be improved. Unfortunately, the base model seats are uncomfortable and may not be suitable for wider individuals. Additionally, the steering wheel does not extend far enough, which can lead to an uncomfortable driving position. Despite these issues, the Tacoma appears to be well-built. However, after owning it for 4 months, I am considering trading it in due to the discomfort. It's a shame because it has a lot of potential.

I purchased my 2006 Tacoma pre-runner V6 brand new, but unfortunately, I have experienced several issues. Firstly, the brakes tend to lock and cause sliding on uneven surfaces, which my dealership explained is a characteristic of the ABS system. Additionally, I encountered a problem with my motor mount, which I researched and found to be a common issue among Tacoma owners from 2005-2007. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my ability to address and resolve any future issues that may arise with my vehicle.

Congratulations on owning your '06 Tacoma Pre-runner for over a year! While the V6 provides plenty of power for the truck, I understand that you have some concerns about the auto-transmission not being matched to the power curve of the V6. I appreciate your feedback on the quality of the vehicle, and I understand that the interior may not be as comfortable as you would like. Additionally, I understand that the doors are thin and road noise can be an issue. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the radio as well. Overall, I appreciate your honest feedback and will take it into consideration. Thank you!
