2020 Toyota Tacoma problems
The Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota since 1995. The first-generation Tacoma (model years 1995 through 2004) was classified as a compact pickup. The second generation (model years 2005 through 2015) and third generation (in production since 2015) models are classified as mid-sized pickups. The Tacoma was Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 2005.
As of 2015, the Tacoma was sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Bermuda, and the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia. Most markets across the world receive the Toyota Hilux in lieu of the Tacoma.
The name "Tacoma" was derived from the Coast Salish peoples' name for Mount Rainier in the U.S. state of Washington.

Common 2020 Toyota Tacoma problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Toyota Tacoma 2020, here are some common problems with this car:
- Ball Joint Wear: Another prevalent problem with the Toyota Tacoma is the accelerated wear of the ball joints. The ball joint connects the steering and the wheel, and in Tacomas, they tend to wear out faster than normal. This issue can lead to unsafe driving conditions, causing the vehicle to veer from side to side while in motion. This problem is particularly notable in models from 1995 to 2007.
- Front Amber Parking Light Issues: Owners have reported problems with the front amber parking light in the Toyota Tacoma. The lens of the light may melt or crack due to the heat generated, potentially leading to costly repairs. While this issue can affect various models, it is more commonly reported in second-generation Tacomas, specifically those from 2006 to 2013.
- Mass Airflow Sensor Failure: The mass airflow sensor in the Toyota Tacoma plays a crucial role in measuring the air entering the engine for combustion. When this sensor fails, it can trigger the check engine light to illuminate, indicating an imbalance in the fuel combustion process. This issue can result in decreased engine power output and erratic engine behavior. The problem is prevalent in Tacomas from 1996 to 2013.
These problems can impact the performance, safety, and overall driving experience of the Toyota Tacoma 2020, highlighting the importance of being aware of these common issues when considering the purchase or ownership of this vehicle.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-03
- VIN: 3TYCZ5AN8LT
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The other day I was slowing down on an off-ramp and all the sudden had no brakes, or at least no power brakes for maybe 30 feet and then all of the sudden power assist came back and slammed hard on the brakes. If there would have been a car at the stop sign I would have rear ended them. Pavement was dry, No ABS light, no codes, everything has been normal since then. I have noticed that the electronic brake booster on this truck "cycles" every few brake applications resulting in inconsistent braking power, which is especially noticeable at low speeds. I have been told this is normal for these trucks. Has not been inspected by anyone as I cannot replicate the issue.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-27
- VIN: 3TMAZ5CN5LM
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: While driving my Tacoma truck it has gone into "limp mode" (looses power and you can get but about 25mph) when I have pulled out into traffic 5 times over the last 3 years. I took it to a Toyota dealership on 4/28/2023 for evaluation but no codes where found to indicate a problem. When the truck goes into limp mode I pull over and cut the engine off. I immediately turn the engine back on and the truck operates normally. I know this is a protective system but if you are pulling out into traffic and the truck goes into limp mode for no good reason, it could result in an accident. In addition, the trucks computer system is not registering the event. I haven't noticed any warning lamps, messages prior to the failure. I did notice that the truck shuck prior to going into limp mode.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-23
- VIN: 3TMCZ5AN8LM
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The issue is that I and as well as many others live in cold winter climates. LED headlights do not put off the heat required to keep snow and ice off of them. This is a hazardous and accident causing issue when you can not see any longer. Getting out of the vehicle every few miles poses a hazard in it's own that you are pulling over on a roadway to clear the headlights. I don't feel the manufacturers thought this through and is getting worse that most newer vehicles & all electrical vehicles have LED lighting. There needs to be a heater system or film/built in heat source for the lens.... Also the front sensor for collision detection will freeze over or become snow covered. Thus the vehicle turning it off. Seems it is most needed during this weather condition???
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-07
- VIN: 3tmcz5an4lm
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The truck has died while driving two separate times. It seems that the problem is the fuel pump, just like we now know have been recalled by Toyota in this model and others. The symptoms are exactly what have been reported by people experiencing faulty fuel pumps that are covered by the recall. My truck is not currently covered by the recall and toyota is refusing to replace the fuel pump, saying that they can’t duplicate the problem after having the vehicle for a week. No resolution has been offered. Just, “Sorry we can’t make it fail and we can’t replace it.” I have spoken with toyota corporate and got the same response. The company is not doing the right thing with this problem, as evidenced by the class action lawsuit ongoing. A major disappointment to say the least. I’m getting absolutely no help from dealer or manufacturer on a major safety issue on a vehicle in its power train warranty period on a known issue. Not even a loaner car.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-08
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Tire failed while traveling at 65 MPH in lane 2 of Interstate 5 northbound at the 5/405 split at approximately 12:35 pm. The traffic was moderate. My vehicle was difficult to control and the noise very loud. The tire pressure warning light did come on. P 265 / 65 R17 1127 SL BSW DOT Code: 1APLV00VX4721
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-23
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 3TMCZ5AN5LM

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-04-02
- VIN: 3TMCZ5AN8LM
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that while driving at 60 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently stalled temporarily. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact was able to continue to drive the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred for a second time while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that no issues were found; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but did not provide any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 5,000.
WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-07
- VIN: 3TMDZ5BN1LM
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: I recently changed tires from the factory originals. While tightening the lug nuts 4 wheel studs sheared off while tightening (2 on passenger front tire and 2 on passenger rear tire). In light of this issue I decided to replace all 12 wheel studs on the affected tires. The 8 remaining wheel studs that were still intact all had evidence of thread stretch visible to the naked eye.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-08
- VIN: 3TMDZ5BN4LM
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: A child infant passenger car seat was placed in the rear passenger center seat position. The the shoulder/lap-belt was used to install the car seat rear-facing. Once the install was complete. The shoulder belt was slowly pulled and extended all the way out. The purpose was to have the shoulder belt reach its maxed length. This would position the belt to be placed into retracting mode only. This would prevent the child or an infant to possibly extend the belt once its been retracted. This would minimize the free play with the belt such as being tangled with child's arm, head, body parts, and potentially becoming a choking hazard. The issue now, is the shoulder/lap-belt retracting mechanism is malfunctioning. The shoulder/lap belt is not retracting. Rather it is stuck and now the entire shoulder/lap belt is extended all the way out. There is no resistance in the seat-belt and cannot will not secure a rear passenger in the center seat position. The rear center seat does not have a working safety car passenger safety belt.
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-10-01
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: The contact leased a 2020 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that after driving the vehicle off the dealer parking lot, the brakes would pulsate upon depression without warning. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer on four separate occasions and had the brake drums replaced each time; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified, and the contact was informed that a service representative would contact him. The contact had not yet heard from the manufacturer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 1. The VIN was not available.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-26
- VIN: 3TMAZ5CN5LM
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated while driving approximately 80 MPH, the brakes activated independent of the driver input and the vehicle slowed to 60 MPH abruptly. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be inspected. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-17
- VIN: 3TMAZ5CN6LM
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated while driving up a hill and whenever the accelerator pedal was released, the vehicle started to roll backward. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer to be diagnosed however, the mechanic was unable to determine the cause of the failure. Upon picking up the vehicle, the contact stated that the failure recurred while driving up a hill. The contact then took the vehicle back to the dealer where it was diagnosed with the engine not getting enough oil causing the vehicle to stall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 7,800.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-11-30
- VIN: 3TMCZ5AN5LM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: IN LATE NOVEMBER OR EARLY DECEMBER OF 2020, I HAD A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEAR. I CYCLED THROUGH SEVERAL HUNDRED MILES (500+) THINKING IT MAY HAVE BEEN A LOOSE GAS CAP ISSUE THAT NEEDED TIME TO SORT ITSELF OUT. THE LIGHT DID NOT RESOLVE ITSELF AND I VISITED THE CLOSEST DEALERSHIP, AUTONATION TOYOTA, IN TEMPE. I WAS SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE WIRING HARNESS CAUSED BY RODENTS. MANY MANUFACTURERS, INCLUDING TOYOTA, HAVE SWITCHED TO SOY-BASED WIRING INSULATION WHICH IS ATTRACTIVE TO RODENTS. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE POINTED AT 1-2 OTHER VEHICLES (ALL NEW) THAT WERE IN THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE SAME PROBLEM AND SAID THEY'VE HAD AN INCREASING AMOUNT OF VEHICLES IN FOR THIS ISSUE. MY VEHICLE WAS 7 MONTHS OLD AT THIS POINT WITH 6840 MILES ON IT. THE WIRING HARNESS PART WAS A SPECIAL ORDER PART AND THAT COST ALONE WAS $1431.79. ADD IN THE ESTIMATED 20 HOURS OF LABOR AND THE "FIX" WOULD BE $4592.61 AT THAT DEALERSHIP. I ASKED IF IT WOULD BE OK IF I CONTINUED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE WHILE WE EXPLORED OUR OPTIONS WITH AN INSURANCE CLAIM. I WAS TOLD THE VEHICLE COULD EXPERIENCE A SUDDEN LOSS OF ACCELERATION AND CAUSE A CRASH. WE WERE ABLE TO INITIATE A NO FAULT CLAIM WITH OUR INSURANCE COMPANY, BUT HAD TO PAY A $500 DEDUCTIBLE AS TOYOTA WOULD NOT WARRANTY THIS ISSUE CAUSED BY THEIR SOY-BASED WIRING INSULATION. WORK WAS COMPLETED AT THE LEASING TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, NOT AUTONATION. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS SOY-BASED WIRING INSULATION ISSUE. NOT ONLY IS THIS TYPE OF WIRING MANUFACTURING ATTRACTIVE TO RODENTS, THUS CAUSING DAMAGE THAT CAN RESULT IN DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS, BUT THE WIRING ALSO DETERIORATES AT A MUCH HIGHER RATE IN HIGHER TEMPERATURES. (WE HAD A BMW 550 WITH SOY BASED WIRING THAT WAS DISINTEGRATING IN THE HEADLIGHT HOUSING.) MANUFACTURERS NEED TO STOP PRODUCING SOY BASED WIRING INSULATION OR IMPROVE IT TO REPEL RODENTS.

I bought my new 2020 Toyota Tacoma in November 2019 and have already put 1444 miles on it. I've owned a 2008 Tacoma work truck and a 2016 Tacoma SR before, but this new Tacoma SR5 is definitely an upgrade. My wife and I love driving it and we haven't had any issues with repairs or blemishes. The power drivers seat was a necessary upgrade for us, and we find the cabin to be comfortable. We've heard that larger people might feel a bit crowded, but for us, it's just right. We highly recommend the V-6 engine for the added power, and the fuel MPG seems about the same as the 4 cylinder I had in the 2016. We also recommend the double cab over the access cab, as it's a bit roomier and has storage under the seats. We're not big on electronics, but we've figured everything out and the offerings are pretty comprehensive. We didn't opt for the navigation option, but the Toyota Safety Sense is a great idea. The blind spot and rear warning should be a standard part of Safety Sense, as it is on the

I purchased the Tacoma Access Cab SR series as a work truck and it has been perfect for my needs. I am really impressed with the smooth and compliant ride, which ensures that my cargo in the back is not damaged. The build quality is excellent and the truck looks great too. Although the 2.3 4cyl engine is underpowered, it is a very tough and durable engine, which is more important to me than speed. I opted for the auto transmission and I am happy to report that it shifts very smoothly. Additionally, the dealer I purchased it from gave me a great deal.
-
Great truck so far. The only issue I have is with the fuel mileage. I wish it was a bit better!
-
I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the ride despite the big tires. It's not always easy to find a balance between performance and comfort, but it sounds like you've found a great combination!
-
The back seats can be folded down after removing the headrests, creating a nice hard surface for cargo. I put the middle headrest in the house and the other two in the tray behind the backseat, just in case I need to carry people.

The vehicle has some drawbacks, such as being slow and requiring the gas pedal to be pushed all the way down to get it moving with the v-6 engine. The driver seating is uncomfortable, especially for the gas pedal and brake. However, the interior is good, if not great. It would be great if the factory could lift it another 3 inches, as when an SUV is as big as my truck, it feels too short. On the positive side, it tows really well. I towed a full-size U-Haul trailer across the country and it performed wonderfully. Additionally, it looks great, which is why I purchased it.

In the 2020 model, Toyota removed several features from the TRD Pro and the safety features seem to only work intermittently. This has not been my experience with Ford. It appears that the sensors may not be entirely reliable.

I'd like to start off by saying that I have owned five second generation 4x4, V6 Tacoma's and they were all five-star. However, I have noticed that the 4.0 V6 and transmission in my 2020 4x4 V6 are not as powerful as my previous models. Although there is a TSB out for these issues and I've had the update installed, it did not help. It's important to be cautious when pulling out and trying to beat oncoming traffic as there is no low-end power or torque for the first few seconds and the transmission tends to hunt for the correct gears. Once you get going and floor it, you will eventually get up to speed, but it's not as impressive as the previous model. Additionally, this model doesn't steer as sporty as the previous model and has a larger truck feel, which can cause it to float a little at highway speeds. Lastly, the steering wheel is too big to grip comfortably and the interior layout changes can be irritating. Unless the V6 and transmission issues are fixed, I will not be purchasing another one.

I'm a big guy at 6'1'' and 240lbs, and unfortunately, I find the cab difficult to get into and uncomfortable. It seems to be designed for shorter people, as nothing is within easy reach. The ride on my off-road edition can be bouncy and rough on the road, but it performs well off-road. The steering can be excessively heavy until about 1/4 turn of the wheel when it lightens up, which can be a bit unnerving. The power is not great, and I think the hybrid Rav 4 could easily outpace it. It struggles to pull hills and requires downshifting one or two gears with no payload. Gas mileage is similar to my full-sized Ram1500, in the teens for mixed driving. The Taco gets better mpg when running at 2k rpm's with the 6-speed manual. The mid-grade stereo is unimpressive, with muddy bass and midrange. The nav doesn't work as well as my phone, Ram, or Cadillac Nav systems. However, it does look nice, and the resale value is ridiculous!

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2020 Tacoma V6 (3.5L) 4x4. While I've enjoyed driving it, I have noticed that it could use a bit more low end torque. When driving uphill, especially on steep mountain roads, the truck can struggle a bit and sometimes downshifts into 4th or even 3rd gear. However, I've made some modifications such as installing 4:88 gears and tuning the vehicle, which have helped improve the performance. Although I still find myself wanting a bit more power, overall I'm happy with my Tacoma. I do notice some road noise inside the cabin, but it's not a major issue for me. Thanks for listening!
