2000 Toyota Tacoma problems
The Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota since 1995. The first-generation Tacoma (model years 1995 through 2004) was classified as a compact pickup. The second generation (model years 2005 through 2015) and third generation (in production since 2015) models are classified as mid-sized pickups. The Tacoma was Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 2005.
As of 2015, the Tacoma was sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Bermuda, and the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia. Most markets across the world receive the Toyota Hilux in lieu of the Tacoma.
The name "Tacoma" was derived from the Coast Salish peoples' name for Mount Rainier in the U.S. state of Washington.

Common 2000 Toyota Tacoma problems
The Toyota Tacoma 2000 is known for its reliability, durability, and off-road capabilities. However, several common problems have been reported by owners over the years, which are worth considering if you're planning to purchase this model.
- Faulty mass air flow (MAF) sensor: The MAF sensor in the Toyota Tacoma 2000 is prone to dirt accumulation, which can lead to issues such as slow acceleration, loss of power, engine hesitation, misfires, and poor exhaust emission.
- Lower ball joint disconnection: A manufacturing issue affected Tacoma models from 1995 to 2007, causing the lower ball joint to disconnect from the suspension. This could lead to a loss of control over the vehicle and was determined to be a manufacturing defect, leading to a recall of Tacoma models built between 2001 and 2004.
- Not shifting correctly: Some Tacomas, including the 2000 model, have a tendency to not shift correctly, which can cause issues when driving, especially if the vehicle suddenly has more power than expected or shifts into reverse unexpectedly.
- Climate system issues: The climate system in the Toyota Tacoma 2000 has been reported to have issues, including electrical failure and refrigerant leakage. The condenser liquid line can bend and crack as a result of hitting a fixed object, and the evaporator can corrode and leak.
- Exhaust system issues: The exhaust system in the Toyota Tacoma 2000 has been reported to have issues, including leaks and rust.
- Drive system issues: The drive system in the Toyota Tacoma 2000 has been reported to have issues, including problems with the drivetrain and the transfer case.
- Paint and trim issues: The paint and trim in the Toyota Tacoma 2000 have been reported to have issues, including peeling and fading paint, as well as issues with the interior trim.
- Engine issues: The engine in the Toyota Tacoma 2000 has been reported to have issues, including problems with the fuel system and emissions.
- Transmission issues: The transmission in the Toyota Tacoma 2000 has been reported to have issues, including problems with the automatic transmission and the manual transmission.
While these issues are common, it's important to note that many Toyota Tacoma 2000 owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle, praising its reliability, durability, and off-road capabilities. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address many of these issues, and it's always a good idea to have a pre-purchase inspection done before buying a used vehicle.

- Summary: I was recently told my a service center that the frame has great corrosion and is unsafe to drive. I am now aware of past warranty extensions for this matter but Toyota will offer nothing because for my year, this warranty coverage extension is expired. My year was also not part of the recent class action settlement with Toyota vehicles having rusted frames for later models (2004+). I'm left with a decent truck that is useless now. I don't understand why a rusted frame that could crack or break would not constitute a safety recall, which I understand does not expire like their well played warranty extension. It is evident my problem is what has been experienced by many others and just because their extended warranty has expired, does not mean the issue was not caused by their defective manufacturing. It is a matter of timing, and our safety. We had taken the truck for service as a Toyota dealer in late 2008, when the program was active, and they did not mention it and maybe there was no rust. Between 2008 and 2015 when it expired, service was not performed at a dealership and still nobody mentioned it. The truck has lived in NC until 2011 and Ohio (snow) from 2011 - 2018 and now back in NC. We had it at a Toyota dealership in 2019 and nothing mentioned. My husband was driving this truck on the freeway every week day for 50 miles round trip to work until last year. I was driving this truck within the past few weeks and was having service performed when my service center mentioned this and said I should not put any more money into it until a frame evaluation is conducted. I have not yet had the frame inspected by a frame shop or dealership as I attempted to ask Toyota pay for this to no avail. I'm currently awaiting a callback from a supervisor next Monday 11/14 after being denied any assistance by Toyota. It is well documented that trucks can last for several hundred thousand miles. A rusted frame at 167,000+ mi that can break at any time is a major safety concern.

- Summary: Owned Toyota Tacoma since 2005...recently took vehicle for muffler repair and discovered my frame was rusted out and in an unsafe condition, when I contacted Toyota @ customer assistance center they advised me that jy vehicle was too old to be covered by ant warranty...they also stated that they had contacted me about the defective steel used on these trucks....I have no proof of any notification, nor any recall of such notice Trucks like mine are still on the road with no problems, NOT MINE.....defective steel, improper rust prevention and lack of notification has left me with a vehicle I cannot drive, sell or repair... My safety and others on the road have been put at risk I would like my truck to get fixed and or compensated for the loss Toyota should stand by my vehicle ( in which they used substandard defective steel) regardless of any time factor. Courts have already determined their negligence....my vehicle should be included in this settlement

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my truck that I bought specifically for hunting, fishing, and outdoor activities. It has a 2.7 lt engine and I have taken it through some pretty rough terrain with mud up to the hubs. Surprisingly, I only got stuck twice! I remember one time when I was pulling a small boat off-road to one of our hunting locations, my friends were skeptical that we would make it through some of the areas, but the truck pulled right through like a champ. There was even a time when one of my friends got stuck and my truck was able to pull his truck up a levee while in reverse. I'm proud to say that I have never had to take my truck to the shop for anything. The only issue I had was with the knock sensor, but I was able to change it myself. Overall, I think it's an awesome truck!
-
I purchased this Toyota a few months ago and overall, I'm really happy with it! The truck runs great and I anticipate it will for years. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the comfort of the seat. I'm a bit older now than I was when I owned my last Toyota pickup, so I could use a little more padding. But other than that, it's a great vehicle!
-
It's interesting to note that both this pickup and my Civic 2000 don't have real bumpers. Perhaps this is the way they make them today. However, it's important to be cautious as it can be costly if you hit something. While the transmission and clutch (std 5 spd) could use some improvement, the pickup gets good mileage and the engine runs well, supplying all the power I need. As someone who was raised on a farm, I know how to shift carefully to get anywhere near a smooth shift.
-
Congratulations on your 2000 SR5 4WD V6! It's great to hear that you love your truck. Although you haven't put many miles on it, it's clear that you have a lot of appreciation for it. It's also wonderful to hear that you and your wife are both Toyota fans, with your previous Tercel and her current 2002 RAV4. While the truck has plenty of power, I understand that there are some minor drawbacks such as the jerky cruise control, slightly uncomfortable seats, and bumpy ride on city roads. Additionally, the gas mileage is not as good as you had hoped, but it's great to hear that you still love your truck despite these issues.
-
My first Toyota and certainly not the last. This truck is great. I have pulled some fancy looking 4x4's out of some rough spots with no problem. I highly recommend the TRD package. I added a shell to the back for traveling.

This is the 2nd Tacoma my husband and I have owned. Although we loved our '92, we were a bit disappointed with the 2000 model. The inside wasn't as comfortable as our previous Toyota and we experienced some issues with the clutch and fenders. However, we appreciate the memories we've made with this truck. We recently purchased a Dodge Ram for myself and have been impressed with its quality. Despite this, we will always cherish our time with our Toyota. Thank you for allowing us to share our experience.

Overall, this is a great truck. The 4Cyl engine may be a little low on MPG, but it's still a good choice. It's perfect for daily commutes, weekend trips to home improvement stores, and getting out to the great outdoors. While the interior may be somewhat lackluster, it's important to remember that it is a TRUCK. The solid engineering of this vehicle translates to a great overall driving experience. It's well-priced, dependable, and flexible transportation, making it a great value for your money.

The straight shift is much peppier, although the acceleration may be a bit lacking. The ride can be a bit rough, but overall it's a dependable mode of transportation. I've had great experiences with the dealer service, and the gas mileage averages around 24-25mpg.
